    You mentioned the recall fix for the steering rack was to weld plates to stiffen up the frame. What you didn't mention was that the instructions from the factory came to the dealers were wrong. The instructions had the dealer weld the plates in the wrong location which blocked the oil filter. I had to have my plates cut out and rewelded after I inspected it.

    These cars are incredibly singular and unique. I have a Gen 2 RT10. Such a fun car to drive. Fresh tires, friends. If you drive aggressively, you better stash your cash for fairly frequent new shoes. Hard to believe, but size 13's still break loose with relative ease on these cars.

    Dodge Vipers are the best supercars made in the world. The V10 engine is brutally strong as long as you do your maintenance and don't abuse them. There are many out there today that are actually supercharged that people race. Maintenance cost wise the Dodge Vipers are dirt cheap compared to all the other super cars in the world bar none, as long as you don't wreck them and have to replace any of the carbon fiber such as the doors, fenders and hood . If you get on the Dodge forums, some of the Dodge Viper owners that own Dodge Cummins diesel trucks say that the Vipers are dirt cheap to own compared to the Dodge Cummins diesels. Hope this helps. Go Dodge Go Viper.

    I would add that the Outer Door Stanchion (the plastic piece that follows the rear of the drivers and passenger side windows) is very problematic with no replacements available. Additionally I had an interesting discussion with a Dodge Care "Professional" about a screw that fell out with my oil during an oil change. She recommended having the engine removed and removing components piece by piece until the hole for said screw was found. Absolutely refused to allow me to speak with an engineer (I had already visited the local dealer who spent an hour going thru manuals with no luck). I will let you draw your own conclusions about the quality of that advise. Thank God for viper forums, turned out to be one of 8 screws that holds the oil pump intake screen on. Hood fitment is also an issue, the front left corner of mine has chipped due to contact with the headlight and vibration.

    The "bolt they used to hold the harmonic balancer to the crankshaft"..
    To be honest, you scared me on this one. Can you please expand a little bit?
    I'm not a mechanic, so thanks in advance for explaining like I'm a 12 year old 👍
    My Viper is a 1997 GTS.

    If your air conditioning is weak as far as not being cool enough. Go to a qualified service tech have them check the system and then have them evacuate the system and then recharge your air conditioning unit with a special freon called hot shot and it will cool much better. Hot shot is a different Freon gas. When it comes to suspension parts. As long as you can get them for the dodge viper, only use moog brand. Napa has them under the name Napa chassis. They are high quality and better than factory parts.

    Great video. Going to be buying my first one soon. All great points to be aware of. I have always wondered how some of these cars end up being trashed by owners when they are such simple cars. Then again I ask the same thing about all the old vette's I see too...

      Shipping or driving back? If shipping what's the cost, millage, and what agency? I'm looking at purchasing a 2001 and am considering shipping the car as it's too cold to drive it where I live.

    You're engine bay is very clean.
    Replace the plastic steering pulley! Mine had a catastrophic failure and it is not raced at all and did not even have 25k milles when it happened.

  • @slimpick99
    @slimpick99 2 года назад

    The power steering pump pulley isn't nylon it is phenol formaldehyde or phenolic. More specifically the disc is phenolic and the center and outer are steel. The pulley on my 02 exploded into pieces so I replaced it with a billet aluminum pulley. If you are replacing the pulley you might as well replace the little bracket that mounts the power steering pump to the head. A stronger billet version is available.

    about the door sag, I heard sometimes it's simply the door seals coming loose and you need to realign them where the door meets, not always a door sag.

      InTheZone that very well could be true. I always make sure the seal is fully seated and I’ve never had it come up.

    Great info and very well maintained, clean Viper you got there. I own a 2000 GTS ACR just like yours. I have experienced what I think is an ignition/electric problems lately: the car sounds like it’s running on 9 cylinders and it won’t rev more then 3500-4000 rpm, what should I be looking for? OBDII doesn’t show anything relevant. Regards.

    How are 100k miles on a low rpm engine like this "robust"?
    That's the bare minimum 🤣

    • @Steve_Milo
      @Steve_Milo 3 года назад

      100K miles is bare minimum for a normal car driven by the average person.
      A Viper with a 100k miles was driven very hard on a track, or very hard on the street for nearly all of those miles. The science is not exact, but it is very safe to say that one mile driven on a track is the equivalent of driving 40 miles like Grandma. The wear-and-tear put on all parts of the car is not comparable to normal street driving.
      If it is a low mileage Viper, it has been sitting in the garage and it would probably treated like any sports car, driven only every other weekend and rarely driven hard.
      If it is a high mile Viper, it has been beaten on for almost every mile because Viper owners are race enthusiasts.
      You have to keep in mind the type of car it is and who the owner was. Not all miles are equal. I hope this helps.
