It's amazing how well vipers age, hideous wheels aside. A 1st gen viper still looks pretty fresh 20+ years later considering it's age, that's a real achievement.
The first and ‘second’ gen Viper look better than anything new. Beastly, yet sensuous. You just don’t get that with all the hideous Asian influenced styling today.
@Curtis Fleabag It's cool, you can scream if you want too. Esp. about Chrysler electronics..bc was those engineers that helped us reach the moon in the 60's. True dat..look it up.
I love the way this car looks. Growing up I was about 10 when this car came out. My neighbor up the street had one. Exact same color as the one shown in this video. Brings back some great memories! Didn't know about the Viper name and the Cobra lineage, so cool.
"no electroc aids- no traction control, no stability control" Exactly how a sports car should be built. There are cars that you have to flog relentlessly to get your best lap times, and there are cars you have to continually reign in to get your best lap times. I prefer the latter.
I remember the first time l ever saw a dodge viper. My friends and l were all jumping on the trampoline and one passed buy and all of us immediately jumped off and ran to look at this thing. I'll never forget what my one idiot friend said "holy shit dude look it even has speakers in the hood!" Lol what a great childhood memory. Love the video David and l agree, these cars are a piece of American car history
I had one..A 93...It was a hand full to drive that's for sure. Always had to make sure your tire pressures were good. Not to low not to high and ALWAYS ride for a bit to heat them up or you will be swapping ends. Yes I did that in the middle of a busy intersection. Blind spots galore but it was a beast...and THAT V10 Sound...!!! Nothing like it..!
Only as dangerous as the driver. I've driven lots of 440 powered Mopes from 84-2000 even in Wisconsin winters..when they weren't yet worth a gold mine and had only a few slide offs. A lil care and quality tires and accidents..amazingly..go down :) lol
Growing up in the 90's I always loved these cars. When I was 10 I was lucky enough to catch a ride in one. Family friend owned a detail shop and was good friends with the viper owner. My dad set it up and surprised me when he took me to the shop. What a thrill for me as child. Definitely lit the flame to my addiction with cars.
There's a dealership in WI here, Kalscheur Dodge in Cross plains..they may yet still have their '93 I think it is..red one. I recall them relating to me how they took it out and drove it occasionally. Lean on it just a bit.. 1st gear, 2nd gear, shift into 3rd, "Holy crap, we're going 110!"
Look at all the cars we drove in back in the 40's 50's, 60's 70's and so on. Those cars didn't even have seat belts, and had metal dash boards. No power steering, no power brakes and more. And we loved em. I still want this Dodge Viper and have been looking for one. Best part is ....... they're cheap .... AND .... you can actually work on them yourself.
Unique and crushed the comp, a paradigm shift of monster proportions..we'll never see the likes again..either in the analogue build or the massive leap in power.
Ahh, the Paul Walker killer. I think they hit a gas line on the road side and the resulting fire was what took him out and the driver. They swerved to miss a truck, if that's correct. Ofc speed was a factor, doing like an 80 mph power slide in a 35 zone or w.e.
I love my Gen 1 Viper (1995). Reliable, attention-getting and fun. Without all the expensive electronics (windows, ABS, etc.) it hasn't been a money pit (with the exception of tires).
Don’t forget about the recall. The steering racks were coming loose from the frame. I did about 15 of them. We had to weld on a support on the frame. Man it was fun to test drive those things!!!
i used to walk to school, and see one of these on the way every morning. This was one of the cars, that got me hooked... love it. thank you for driving it
The viper is such a unique car. I literally can never think of any other car like it. Sure corvette’s are similar but a corvette compared to a viper just makes a corvette seem regular lol. The viper is just that insane of a car all around.
See I dont get offended when someone says they're similar but it kinda offends me when someone ask if my vipers a Corvette, I see so many corvettes a day it's more common than mustang honestly
Syntronz Remixx they’re similar in some ways, front engine, rear wheel drive, American sports cars. But a viper is just so much wilder. Corvettes are just the common mans sports car. A viper is a death wish lol.
I always loved the Dodge Viper (but not the newer ones). I first saw the Viper as a concept car at the Minneapolis Auto Show in the 90's and fell in love with it. Then someone told me about the Plymouth Prowler and I switched focus. I bought the Prowler instead and still have my 1999 Plymouth Prowler and I constantly get the looks like you did @ 07:54 The only problems I've had with my Prowler was [both} window regulators had to be fixed. Other than that, "nothing" else wrong. I love it. !! :) But now .... after watching this video, I think I'll buy a Viper and add it to my garage. :)
I've always wanted one of these. My dad and I went to a road trip in one back in the late 90s, as he had dealership connections and was able to borrow the owner's personal Viper. Despite having driven in NASCAR alongside Petty and Junior, he said the Viper was the scariest vehicle he had ever driven.
Owned a '94 with modified headers and cams... Was about 600hp to the rear. Was going across alligator ally and decided to open it up. Was in 5th going about 167 and saw a car way up ahead in the same lane. White knuckled doesn't even begin to describe the king-fu action figure grip I had on the wheel. The other car in the same lane was doing about 80....which means it was coming at me at about 80+mph.... Changing lanes at that speed was nerve wracking.... Nearly sh*t myself. Bucket list item checked off.... I'll never hit that speed again in a car!
Huge Viper fan here! I love the fact that you have to know what you are doing while driving one. Probably i will never own one (maintaining a Viper in Germany is very expensive and there are not many mechanics around who can deal with it) but it's one of my dream cars. I would take a supercharged gen 4 2009 Viper Coupe 8.4! The gen 5 is to modern for me. Thanks 4 the review, great video :)
I remember seeing one at a dealer in Memphis when they first launched. Rode in a 95 Special Edition Emerald Green Viper back 25 years ago(I was 8 y.o.) in the dead middle of winter with the top off doing over 100 mph on the snow and ice. Always wanted one and maybe one own one.
"Don't think you should be focusing on heel-toeing..." That's the reason why so may of them crashed, dude. People driving a serious car with inept technique before the invention of electronic driver aids. Downshifting under braking with no rev-match (aka neglecting to heel-toe) will lock the rear wheels of this car and cause it to spin out with no possibility of correction. There is literally video of this happening on a track with this very car (and some inept driver) somewhere on youtube. Just because the car doesn't have automatic rev matching and 10 different kinds of traction control and stability assist doesn't mean its inherently dangerous. It just means you maybe have to know how to drive manual fully as a bare minimum in order to drive it safely. If one more person implies that heel-toe is some kind of "advanced" manual technique I'm going to declare driving culture officially dead.
I remember when I was 15 my classmate’s dad had a 2008 Viper bright green. When my friend was getting picked up the viper was blasting Accept Balls to the Wall
"Ya gotcher balls to the wall, man!!!" Ahaha, my cousin used to crank that cassette tape..yup, lol in his '73 Charger, that and Ratt, on the way to a job we had together. my car was a '71 Satellite 2 dr painted to look like Daisy Duke's roadrunner & had a '74 cop 440 & 3.55 sg rear, 727 torque-flite trans. His charger only had a 318, but was in nicer shape, metal flake blue & Cragar SS wheels, lol. Viper! I've never had the privilege of driving one, I'm quite sure I'd love it. They're captivating af to look at & listen to.
Worked for a Dodge dealer as parts manager in San Diego in 1992-1995 Went to see the Viper unveiling in LA. Got signed copies of blue prints and original materials at that event. Still have them in the closet. Also went back to the dealership and ordered a front Viper Snake head Front ornament. Still have that in the original package. Hopeing someday worth some good coin.
I remember going to best buy as a kid and playing the original need for speed on a Panasonic 3DO. I loved the videos of the cars. It is why i started to like the fd rx7 (my favorite car)
TEDDERAMA my Best Buy had a replica Viper in the back of the store. I would go sit in it for an hour at a time. Crazy stuff. Ended up driving a 94’, almost bought it. Went with a Porsche instead.
Shane Husack Now that I’m older, I would likely do the same. If you already have a daily driver, and the sports car is for weekends, go Viper. It won’t decrease in value either (which is important!). My Porsche cost $1600 per service for what amounted to little more than an oil change (10.5 quarts of Mobil1 iirc) Edit: on second thought, 2010-2015 911 (997.2 ? 991 maybe?) Turbos are next level, even compared with the last Viper models. It comes down to preference I suppose. All generations of Viper with exception to Gen 5 and possibly Gen 4 have likely depreciated about as low as they are going to and will hold or increase their value. The Viper will be cheaper to buy and maintain as well, but not be as reliable (Porsche’s are surprisingly reliable, but expensive to maintain). The Porsche will be more “practical”, comfortable, safer, but not as raw/visceral, and won’t attract quite as much attention (I’m sure you already know most of this). Really just a matter of preference. Vipers get your testosterone pumping like nothing else though.

One of the most underrated cars of our time.
It's amazing how well vipers age, hideous wheels aside. A 1st gen viper still looks pretty fresh 20+ years later considering it's age, that's a real achievement.
The wheels are amazing!!

The Dodge dealership in my hometown had one in 94 I believe. I was viper crazy as a little kid and my dad took me up there just to look at it.
Me as well
Look at all the cars we drove in back in the 40's 50's, 60's 70's and so on. Those cars didn't even have seat belts, and had metal dash boards. No power steering, no power brakes and more. And we loved em. I still want this Dodge Viper and have been looking for one. Best part is ....... they're cheap .... AND .... you can actually work on them yourself.

I've always been indifferent to the Viper. However, I DID enjoy David's explanation of the one in this video.

My buddy Randy Wrapped his 95' Viper around a tree. He was one of the best drivers I ever met too.
I got to drive one of these because I’m a dodge technician, and MAN ITS AN EXPERIENCE
Did you drive the 2018 Dodge demon yet?
I've always wanted one of these. My dad and I went to a road trip in one back in the late 90s, as he had dealership connections and was able to borrow the owner's personal Viper. Despite having driven in NASCAR alongside Petty and Junior, he said the Viper was the scariest vehicle he had ever driven.
Childhood dream car, fell in love with the blue one in the first need for speed for PS1

Great video, good review! I remember loving these cars back in the day! Makes sense why you don’t see them around much anymore.
"Don't think you should be focusing on heel-toeing..."
That's the reason why so may of them crashed, dude. If one more person implies that heel-toe is some kind of "advanced" manual technique I'm going to declare driving culture officially dead.
can't hardly buy a new car with an manual transmission these days, id say it was dead
heel & toe is the precision you need when you have a nuclear power plant equivalent under the hood

@@dr.lyleevans6915 funny you say that! I'm looking at a few '10- '15 911 Turbo$ and thinking I may just get a 10-15 year old Viper instead.
Shane Husack Now that I’m older, I would likely do the same. If you already have a daily driver, and the sports car is for weekends, go Viper. It won’t decrease in value either (which is important!). My Porsche cost $1600 per service for what amounted to little more than an oil change (10.5 quarts of Mobil1 iirc)
Edit: on second thought, 2010-2015 911 (997.2 ?
I’ve been racing for 12 years and the last time I drove a gen 1 I was quite surprised how far I pushed my skills it really will test you in every aspect.
All that driving inside “the” viper with the sound of an angry exhaust note is making me jealous 😠
