Being a young boy in The Netherlands, I lived near an upscale dealership. Lamborghini's, Ferrari's, high end Mercedes, Porsche, you name it. But the car we all went to see.... the Chrysler (not Dodge in Europe) Viper. A GTS in blue and white just like this one. I was 13-14 at the time. This was the coolest thing we'd ever seen.

It was my favourite car when I was a kid in the 90s in the UK. They're exceedingly rare here. I've seen more McLaren F1s and Jaguar XJ220s. I never got to see a viper until about 2013, and it was the later style one. It was being driven very conservatively on a track. I flew past it in a Cayman.... I've seen a couple of the very early RT10s now, but I'm still dying to see a blue GTS like this one. Brings back so many memories.
Same here. Had one as a toy car, played with it a lot! I love seeing one of the other exotics but there's something about a viper or corvette that conveys a certain feeling of happiness

In the early 90's, my friend and I were walking by a Chevron as a Viper was leaving and saw us pointing at his car. At the intersection, he made a turn and came back into the Chevron so we could see it up close. I'll always remember that cool guy.
Gosh I love Jay Leno. How he opens up his garage and actually drives them. I love how whether it is an expensive car or a low-expense car---he loves and respects them all. Real car guy. Thanks Jay.
Same, first car that lit the spark for me. 90's racing games like Gran Turismo and Test Drive, R/C and model cars, posters, books, magazines etc... This car was everywhere for me.
My dad had a shop in downtown Dallas in the early 90's and he worked on some Viper RT's. I just got my license and went to work with him a few times. The Viper was the first manual car I ever drove, and from then on I fell in love with them. The GTS coupe was always my dream car, even today. Thanks for the memories Jay!
@@cun7sathome SAME! We're probably close in age. I saw the Viper for the fist time at the '92 Indy 500 and fell in love. When the GTS came out, there was NO turning back.
Back in 95 my mother was a salesperson for a local dodge dealership. They had a perk with commission that stated if they sold 15 non viper cars and 1 viper in 2 months that the winner would be able to take home the floor model for a week. Ma Dukes won the rights and I was a happy only child being dropped off and picked up from school in the fifth grade.
Jay is awesome. Most celebs don’t mention their cars at all. Jay has no issues with sharing his collection with the world and in a sense bringing you into his garage. Thanks Jay.
1993 Viper convertible salesman to Jay: "It's got 400hp! Because of emissions you'll never see that much power in a car ever again." 1996 Viper coupe salesman to Jay: "It's got 50 more horsepower!"
I was never a huge car guy, but there are a few that turn my head every time I see them. The Viper was one such car. And while no Viper was ever bad-looking in my book, it was the Gen II coupe that I think epitomized its signature style, and that first captured my attention. Dang, that's a pretty car! The hood, the side vents, the roofline... fantastic curves and beautiful lines everywhere you look. This is among the most aesthetically pleasing cars I've ever seen.
@Seamus McShamish I get your disappointment but remember that inflation is a thing. I thought the prices of pretty much all of the cars you mentioned have skyrocketed, but in reality if I compare the buying power of what they were worth back in the day to the buying power of what they are worth today there's not much difference. Sure, an E30 was worth 15 grand when I first looked them up, now they are worth 100+, but back then you could rent a nice place for 3-5 years for that money, today in the same part of town you can rent the same place for 3-5 years for 100k. The prices haven't increased tenfold, it just seems that way, sure in other parts of the world you don't have as much inflation but the western world is very affected by it, especially Germany. Pretty much all of our classics are still worth what they were worth 10 years ago, they increased in value about 30-50% but over the same period of time our buying power has been reduced by 30-50%. Now just to make sure you understand what I'm saying: they are worth exactly the same, there is at least ten times as much money around now so obviously they will be priced higher but the only reason why we can't afford them anymore is because we didn't get major salary increases, the companies now keep the profits to themselves whereas back in the day it was normal to hand out shares of your company and annual profits to your employees. So they cost the same but we just don't have as much money anymore. There are exceptions, obviously, and I think an E30 M3 did increase in value a bit, but if you drove it a litte, paid taxes and insurance in Germany you would net about 0$ profit.... if you look at it this way you haven't made to much losses, if you're sad about the way you spent your money then be sad that you didn't invest in property inside a booming city or something, I could name you a lot of opportunities you had back then which would have created at least twice as much profits with less risk, also many business opportunities give you income while a car is just a risky object of speculation. It would be really sad if you wanted any of these cars back because they cost so much now, but if you're just sad that you didn't keep them long enough to make a profit then you shouldn't beat yourself up about it. You could have easily made a loss speculating that the value of these cars will go up, in my book cars don't even count as investments unless you're buying a limited edition Ferrari and flipping it, unless you're buying a rare car looking to keep your money instead of increase it.
@@アマ-p2l Yes, buying power changed over the last few decades... Especially in europe, where most european countries had *their own currency* before 2002 (when the € EURO got introduced). It definitely changed something...

Great Video. The Dodge Viper was my dream car growing up as a little kid and still to this day. Almost every day i would walk home from school I would always see the exact same viper Jay has come rolling down the street. I would look for it every day after school and it would bring an instant smile and curiosity. I will give it my all to get one for myself one day.
You could hear THAT cars motor before you saw it sometimes, I bet. My friend had a 76 Stingray, and I knew its voice when it passed by my window on a major artery with a million cars a day on it. Amazing how these things get to us eh? 🇨🇦👊🏻👨🏻🏭⚡💖
THIS Viper is my childhood poster car, had multiple 1:18 scale models of it in different colors too. It looks amazing, even better than alot of modern cars today. The shape, the rims, the stripes, iconic beyond belief. The last Viper we had around 2013 or so with the ACR swansong, was amazing too, back to form and the very last proper driver focused super car with a manual to exist. With all the success the Hellcat platforms and Trackhawks etc, have had, I hope Dodge can find it in their budget to bring the Viper back. However, if they can only bring it back as a hybrid or something, DON'T. If we can't bring it back bigger and better than ever, let it rest in peace as the one car ALL automotive enthusiasts should love.
I've always believed Jay was a champion of the common man. Not surprised to see he would be honored by all the assemblers that signed his car. Most of the uber rich and celebrities wouldn't want that "graffiti" on their expensive car.
I love Jay's collection of vehicle's. What floors me with excitement is How he talks about each vehicle. It's as if it's a personal connection to each, as if he's talking directly to you about it. You don't get people like that to talk to you much anymore. It's magical in a sense. I enjoy sitting and watching Jay with my daughter. She will legit just sit and be engaged. Every vehicle has a story and I'm always happy to listen and watch. Thank you Jay. As for the Viper, its a car that'll scare the crap out of you and yet make you awe in its mere presence. Period.
I remember my junior year of high school (99-00) driving by a house with a ‘96 Viper exactly like this one parked outside. I got the Berber to go knock on the door. One 10 minute conversation later I learned the guy was visiting his mom (he was from Vegas) and I was going to skip band practice the next day to go get a ride in his Viper! Best ride I’ve ever taken!!!
Jay, I drove a '96 Viper Coupe from Detroit to Philadelphia in the rain. Surprisingly it was a very pleasant drive despite the fact that you did not want to give it too much throttle in first 4 gears in heavy rain. It climbed through the Pennsylvania mountains in 6th gear without any effort. It had none of the wind noise that you get in the roadster so it made driving quite pleasant. Of course the handling in the corners at speed was amazing. While I was down there I took the car across Smithbridge Road off route 52 north of Wilmington, Delaware. If you haven't been there before that is Andrew Wyeth country with beautifully paved, 17th century "cowpaths" that wind around throughout the majestically wooded hills. It is a very picturesque road but challenging at speed. I was very familiar with those roads as I grew up near there and had driven my Corvettes (a '62 C1 roadster, a '66 C2 roadster and a '65 C2 coupe - not owned all at the same time) across those roads many times. Of course the Viper handled those curves and dips beautifully and was a real joy. P.S. I didn't get to sign the fender of your car but I was involved in its creation. How Viper came to be is a great story all in itself.
Dear Jay, I've been taking care of my father for the past decade with a pretty grim looking future for myself as a result due to the lack of a career I am now set with, also due to battling depression my entire life. I've been a nut for this exact car since it was debuted on Car and Driver the tv show back in 1996 when it came out. I was 10 years old, in my last year of elementary and I brought my best friend over to show him. Since then anytime someone I knew saw one they had to say something like better hide that or he'll pass out etc. It was also my high school year books life ambition and fate. If you ever wanted to give someone happiness for life, let me hang on to that car for you. I'd keep it exactly as is it for as long as I live. I can't say I've ever asked for anything like this, and feel shame doing it now, but I have faith anything is possible in life and you are a god among men so.. Of course I don't expect anything to become of this, and if by chance you even read this I wish you all the best and good health for all the years to come. ❤
Jay makes his videos be about the cars and not him. Something that all those wannabe vloggers are doing WRONG! Thank you Jay for sharing those wonderful cars with us.
I saw this car for the first time at an auto show in Baltimore before they released them for sale. I have been bitten by the Viper bug since. But, I'm poor, so no Viper for me!
Don't be discouraged! You can get a beautiful Gen I for in the high $20Ks, and a Gen II for in the mid-to-high $30Ks. It was my dream car since I was a kid too. A little over a year ago, I bought a mint '99 Viper RT/10 with 2,000 miles on it for $38K. I know that's not a small amount of money, but it's very attainable, and that's part of why I love the car. It is emblematic of the American Dream. You have almost 300,000 subscribers on your RUclips channel. If you can achieve that, you can certainly achieve buying a Viper. It's just a matter of focus and priorities. If you get to the point where you're ready to get serious about it, don't hesitate to message me. I and many other owners would be happy to help you find a car and make sure you get a fair price on it.
Jay, Just letting you know your gts viper never made it next door to be put up on the dekoni lift. Tell your video editing crew they forgot. Perhaps their will be some b roll gts viper footage!
Whenever I see a Corvette and Viper next to each other, they look like a couple of bros just hanging out. They may be rivals but it was never ugly. Just two dudes upping their games and having fun doing it. I wish Chrysler had kept that in mind towards the end. Maybe the end would not have come when and as it did.
It's the worst mistake Chrysler/Dodge did when they stopped producing it. As a European I can tell you that the Viper was one of the very few American cars Europeans get excited when they see it (the other being a corvette and a ford GT) . It was that good and everyone wanted to drive it. Now that it's gone and its place is the challenger hellcat almost no one gets excited for it and everyone thinks it's just a god awful looking car despite being great. Too bad
@@Γιάννης-ξ8μ I'm okay with the Challenger. But I understand what you mean. The car is too big, heavy, the engine is comparatively underpowered next to the Mustang GT and Camaro SS, except the top tier models, Hellcat, Hellcat Red Eye, and Demon. But the Viper was Chrysler being serious about automotive sports, like Ford and GM. And it was a monumental mistake to discontinue the instead of just fixing the line-up, which should have led with convertibles but adding them late would have been fine. Not advancing the tech, adding a DCT/DSG as an option would have been extremely helpful to sell more cars. Truthfully there is a lot FCA/Chrysler did wrong with the Viper, including going this long without any sign they are going to fix it.
@@DocWolph the irony is that the srt brand with a separate factory that didn't belong to Dodge would have helped to "dodge" the now emission standards in Europe that every manufacturer with exception of Supercar brands like Ferrari or hypercars like the Koeniggsegg have to achieve carbon emissions below 95gr of CO2 if the cars exceed 20.000 sold per year. That meant that Srt could produce the 8.2 V10 for a very long time before they had to eventually downsize. Add the options you mentioned and it's bizarre as to why Chrysler never allowed it to happen. But who knows? Maybe other interests of Chrysler were interfering with the Viper project being eventually cancelled
I think this was and still is the best looking American car made in the last 25 years hands down . It is just so badassed and tough looking , it’s definitely got some of the vibe from cobra Daytona and it just rocks in that paint scheme . The entire vibe of it just works form me . Chrysler hit some serious home runs in the 90s...until the demons from Daimler got involved. Viper, '94 Ram, '97 Dakota, '98 Durango, and more. They were everywhere.
@AngelTheFiend that's a supercar it's not a sports car . i still prefer the looks of this over the gt . on the other hand if you are tallking the earlier gt40 inspired car . i cant really consider it a new design. it looks extremely like the gt40 . even with the differences its still looks like the older car.

He doesn’t drive them far. Just enough to get everything warmed up. Some he drives more than others. Surprised he doesn’t have a treadmill to keep them out of the elements. 😂
When I was 16 years old in 1995 or so, I lived in Detroit. I was driving in my mom’s 1994 yellow convertible Mustang GT. I saw this car, one that looked exactly like Jay’s, driving in front of me, before it had been released. I could not believe what I was seeing. It was the most beautiful car I’d ever seen in my life. I was so full of excitement. I followed it around the corner, and it had simply disappeared. Whoever was driving really stepped on the gas. I still think it’s the prettiest car from the decade.
Still my favourite sports car of all time. Just so raw. Loved the colour scheme with the two stripes on blue. Always loved the curves of the bodywork and the headlights, to me just absolutely looked perfect. The newer models had nothing on that styling imo. The engine and the no fuss nature. Just the right amount of horsepower with a V10. Controllable at a canter but wild when you blipped. Just everything a sports car should be.
In the mid 1960s I was a kid into slot cars. Ever since then I will see a new car and I will immediately see elements of a slot car in it. The Dodge Viper is a good example of this. When I first saw a real one over 20 years ago I thought it looked like my friend's Cheetah slot car, circa 1965.
I have a 2008 Viper convertible (blue w/ silver stripes) and a 2017 Viper ACR-E in a “1 of 1” config in GTS Blue w/ white stripes, and they are different animals, but definitely the most fun cars I’ve ever driven. Dreamed of getting the 96’ Viper GTS in this exact color combo since I was a teenager, but haven’t found a super clean one yet. These are the kinds of cars you have to fear & respect, but if you do, the performance and fun they offer is beyond almost anything I’ve experienced. Such a raw and purist experience, and there’s nothing like driving a manual V10. They’re definitely a collector item, and going up in value. I think you undervalued the 96’ GTS as I’ve been seeing some examples going for over $70k or more now. Great video, and love that you have this in your collection! 🏎💨
True to story: I was driving in downtown Chicago in my 79-hp-3-cylinder 1994 Geo metro on a beautiful summer day, when a red one of these pulled up along side of us at stop light for a bridge that was up...maybe Dearborn or Clark? Anyway The thing was grumbling and gurgling and just oozing with badness. So i dropped my Metro in to neutral and gunned the engine a few times! The guy looks over and starts laughing his head off! Not in a bad way - but he was just genuinely laughing. At the green, we both gunned it. He was out of view before I made it across the intersection.

Jay, I'm surprised you didn't mention the racing pedigree of the viper. Multiple Lemans class wins, Spa 24h, Nurburgring 24h wins, multiple series championships.
The reason I believe Jay Leno is so popular is the fact that he has a passion for cars in general. Everyone has their favorites but , for the most part, a REAL car enthusiast can appreciate just about anything with wheels on it. And the reference of OBD’s is funny to me because our current family vehicle will send out an email to the dealership with info of a diagnostics and will display a request to service, on our touchscreen console. Gosh I love Jay Leno. How he opens up his garage and actually drives them. I love how whether it is an expensive car or a low-expense car---he loves and respects them all. Real car guy. Thanks Jay.
The viper was the Car that made me a car guy when I was a kid in the 90s. I hope they bring it back.

Long hood, short deck, sensual curves. Shes got it all
It's good, but something weird in the line between the bottom of the windshield and the bonet(hood), like the glass has been sucked down into it.
Looks like a penismobile. Not a fan.
What an amazing car. When I was a kid this was THE car and it has aged beautifully.
I smell lies.
that GTS still looks great after all these years.

Finds 25 year old quart of oil, “That’s no good anymore.” Puts it right back in the car. 😂
I have a feeling , Jay doesn't throw many things away.

Great job Jay ... always gives good info on his cars. Makes me miss the 2000 GTS I had for about 7 years. Bought it with low miles - used it on weekends - and sold it for more than I paid. It was everything Jay says it is. Just a fun car to drive!!
Great Video. The Dodge Viper was my dream car growing up as a little kid and still to this day. Almost every day i would walk home from school I would always see the exact same viper Jay has come rolling down the street.

Period.
I still remember the Viper Show that made me fell in love with the car brand
Still one of the best looking cars ever made imo.
That color scheme is one of the best looking on the first gen GTS .
This car holds a special place in my heart. My father worked at Connor Avenue and got to see the last Viper come off the assembly line.
I had an opportunity to work there but no overtime. Just strait 40 hours/week. I didn't want to paint myself into a corner.
3:50 "It really wasn't much bigger than my garage." Jay, there are neighborhoods smaller than your garage.

Wait, was Jay here?
Too bad
@@Γιάννης-ξ8μ
I'm okay with the Challenger.

The French racing team Oreca kicked azz racing Chrysler Vipers at Le Mans and other endurance races back in the late 90's and early 2000's. Nothing was even close.
That was so COOL! As much for prototypes of major automotive brands...
They.....also had a nasty fire in at least one of the cars, and that's where the lil' NACA duct on the front end of this car came from.

Jay is just a genuine dude.
If you were a kid in the 90s this is the car that everyone had a journal, folder, poster, hotwheels of and played with on all the games.
Makes sense. The cheetah was designed to compete with the Cobra, the original inspiration for the viper

Ian Derzsi Yeah, but this is California... it'd probably be like, “Hey, Ezra, as soon as you get done checking that Paganini, we got another one a them McLuhans...”
Lenos got so much money his cars are giving him "cash back incentive "
"Got plenty cars over 450 horse power" love ya J
Fell in love with these in high school, graduated in 97.... still waiting to own one, but one day it will happen. Have to raise my boys first. Sweet ride Jay, thanks for the video. You picked the right color, those are art and muscle.
Jay your such an intellectual, and so intelligent. I've been a mechanic for about 15 years and I enjoyed your late night show and I love hearing you talk. You have great sense of humor. Enjoy brother. Thanks for the great content.
