If I didn't know better I'd say What a coincidence! This very day I was thinking of Luke's version (all four Gospels have his triumphant entry into Jerusalem) in the 19th chapter. Your comment, "President of the Internet" is so a propos. There is no better rendition on finger-style guitar than this one by Doyle Dykes. Yes, that passage you allude to so appropriately here: When he came near Jerusalem, at the place where the road went down the Mount of Olives, the large crowd of his disciples began to thank God and praise him in loud voices for all the great things that they had seen: “God bless the king who comes in the name of the Lord! Peace in heaven and glory to God!”
Then some of the Pharisees in the crowd spoke to Jesus. “Teacher,” they said, “command your disciples to be quiet!”
Jesus answered, “I tell you that if they keep quiet, the stones themselves will start shouting.”

Performing live in a public setting Doyle chooses his moments to share his faith, in such a disarming way. I can't help but wonder how many people have been drawn to Jesus through his 'artless' gentle anecdotes, sometimes, consisting simply in praising a song like Dvorak's GOIN' HOME as "divinely inspired." His mainly secular audience (at least here in Canada) has had a seed planted in their consciousness that may produce a 'harvest' years, or even decades on. Thanks for your comment, Jim Poston. (See my comment above please concerning GOIN' HOME.

Beautiful!!! As a side note… I have always done tremolo using the traditional classical method P.A.M.I. but have now started playing it the way you do and it makes so much more sense and makes it so much smoother! I now consider it to be like a forward banjo roll plus my ring finger and it makes it a million times smoother! Thank you so much for the great idea!🙂

Martin Taylor, Tommy Emmanuel and, most recently Brazilian-American Walter Rodriguez have delivered the best finger-style renditions of this beloved hymn. But as usual their great peer Doyle Dykes gives us the most fully developed (3:25) version I could ever hope to hear. Three months after this video was recorded Doyle Dykes graced our city for a few hours.
I live in the world's coldest major city, Winnipeg Manitoba Canada and Doyle Dykes performed for an audience that included about 40 guitarists. He was scheduled to play for 90 minutes but ended up playing for three hours. He must have made a mistake, but I didn't hear it. That's the truth. Think about that -- a virtuoso of such magnitude that he could play that long without any evident mistakes. This was at the Quest Music store in Winnipeg that sells Godin guitars including Doyle's signature model.
With me were my guitarist son Ben (who when he saw Doyle at a Toronto music store a decade ago told me: "Doyle Dykes is the greatest guitarist I've ever seen." With Ben was his six year old son, my grandson Luke who looked terrified at the volume level. His Dad swept him up in his arms and took him to the back of the store to protect his ears a little. Before the show Doyle sat down next to Luke after I told Doyle "He knows who you are!" "Who am I?" said Doyle. But little Luke was paralyzed with fear so Doyle disarmingly high-fived his little hand.
There were some magic moments that others might have missed, Doyle playing a few bars of the jazz standard HERE'S THAT RAINY DAY -- gorgeous chords and Doyle remarked that he "loved jazz guitar." I knew the names of every song he played including one he didn't introduce, except by way of saying he had just returned from Prague in the Czech Republic. When he finished the song, I called out, "And that was WRITTEN by a Czech -- Antonin Dvorak!" Yes, said Doyle "and today you don't hear it much except at . . . " and I finished his sentence, "At funerals." "Have you recorded that?" I asked. "Not yet, but I told my wife that I would do it for my next album." "I'm buying that album!" I shouted.
Doyle's is the only version I'd heard by guitar giants since Winnipeg's Lenny Breau recorded it with our mutual hero Chet Atkins for their STANDARD BRANDS album. Anyway, all this by way of saying that at the 41:00 minute mark of this Facebook hour-long feature Doyle took my breath away with a much more fully developed, heavenly version of GOIN' HOME. I just played it for my wife who said, "I'm pretty sure they played that for President Bush in Washington today." God bless Doyle Dykes. -- Mark B of the frozen North.
