Carla Austin, what a wonderful testimony! Thanks for sharing it. I had the same experience of joy in His Presence when my husband lay in a coma from which he did not recover. He went Home instead. Thank you for this video. Someone said a true friend is that person who in your darkest hour while the whole world is walking out, this, your friend comes walking in. After 40 years of being a Christian I only wish that I would've been to Jesus the Friend that He has been to me. He has been all that and more and continues to be. God bless.
So very true. After passing through a tragedy (much like the author of this hymn), countless friends left me, but one human friend walked into my fiery furnace of affliction and stayed with me. In the subsequent two years, I learned more about God than I could have learned in several lifetimes. Our adversity is indeed God's opportunity.
A Ghanaian living in the United States of America, who is also watching this in 2020 God is great, a great test and testimony for this generation and the generations to come. Glory to your name our Lord and Savior Jesus Christ.
Jesus has been my friend now for 52 years. Although I've strayed in the past, and followed after other things, serving myself, I found Him to be as close as a silent prayer. I find my walk with Him gets sweeter as time passes.
I was baptized by my friend Kid, I told him my faith in Jesus and he proceeded to baptize me in our community swimming pool. What a friend we have in Jesus.
as a born again blood bought child of GOD...as a recovered drug addict( 25yrs) whom GOD broke that band of wickedness...and as a jail house preacher and street preacher and pastor...I so thank my LORD JESUS CHRIST whom was beaten bloodied mocked crucified...for a wretch like me Praise be unto CHRIST JESUS
I want to bear testimony that I know God hears and answers our prayers. He knows and loves each of us personally. There is a purpose to all things, even heartbreaking sorrow. Perhaps we have these challenges so we can become the people we need to be in order to reach our full potential.
Jeannette Meek bullshit, heaven and hell ,the latter being Earth, we have no hope in hell and God can't do anything period . I should know I have been going through this B's everyday of my life , lied to by all these wonderful Christan people 😱😵
Jeannette Meek You must read TSALAGI1839's reply! This is another reason that Christians suffer. Tests are necessary in the lives of all Christians if they are to bear testimony for Christ. The Lord is good! intouch.org, billygraham.org
All the best hymns come from people who have lived through real life tests. That is why they connect and bring hope. I love how God has used them to reach me in my real life.
This and “On Christ the solid rock I stand” are my two favorite hymns. Never knew there was a deep story behind this hymn. What a reason to live for? Selfless; great man. Lord please continue to mold me for your use
I am sure my father never knew this story, but oh what a faith the writer. Tragedy at times makes us bitter and sometimes we think that only when everything is going 'right' that we are blessed. Do we see how many persons through the ages have been blessed by this man's pain. When we have pain take it to Jesus, He's the friend who will never leave you nor forsake you.
Amen to that! i am reminded of another great song-which rigs true even today..... "Standing somewhere in the Shadows you'll find Jesus He's a friend who always cares and understands Standing somewhere in the shadows you'll find him You'll know him by the nail prints in His hands"
I love that hymn, but I didn't know its story. Well, while watched this video, I thought about what faith is, and I came to the conclusion to have faith is to hope and love God even when we haven't answer, or even throught adversity.
Thank you Jesus for being our friend. I love you so much! I believe in your power. I’ve never felt fulfilled without you. I trust your work in my life. Thank you Jesus for bearing my burdens.
They`d nailed him on a cross of wood--he`d made the hill on which it stood. (Of course, the Bible makes no mention of his being crucified on a `hill called Mt. Calvary`--that bit is mere legend. I have been to the more likely spot of Golgotha, a hillside used as a quarry perhaps as early as Solomon`s time, the frontal view of which does resemble the orifices of a skull, with the adjacent `Garden Tomb` with its ancient water cistern, one of the largest in ancient Jerusalem. The crucifixion would have been, not atop the hill, but at its foot, near the roadway where the exhibition would have telling effect on passersby. The victim was bloody and shamed, with nakedness exposed...not at all like the cross adornment popular today but truly an emblem of suffering and shame. The possible spot is now a noisy parking lot of busses behind an Arab bus station.)
When it came to the part where he found love again, I was feeling joy for him, but then when she came down with pneumonia, and died, I actually said out loud, " oh, no!" Both of His ladies were very beautiful. I wonder if God had intended him all along to be single. I truly wish He had written some other things that would help singles in spiritual life. It is extremely difficult for most, to live absolutely purity. I love this hymn and often sing it to myself. Thank -you Jesus for being our very best friend, and helping us be a good friend to others. Thank you for this inspiriting video!
This is my favourite hymn! It has helped me through many hard things in life. As a Christian, Jesus has been my friend and helper for years. Thank you for this song ! God is so faithful and carries us when we can’t walk!
What a story of one man's life to ponder. I thank the Lord for this man and I'm deeply moved by the tremendous losses in his life, that led to this song coming into our lives, to share through those experiences in his own life. "What a Friend We have in Jesus"
Thank you so much for posting this. It is most humbling to watch. This great man, turning to Jesus each time tragedy struck, instead of turning against Him. All Glory be to Our Lord and Saviour.
katrinaparis amen ! So hard at times not to question the Lord and not want to give up..i am guilty of that myself. Although the devil would like nothing more. I try to hold on lately to my faith in The Lord even if by my fingertips..but I know ultimately He is holding us
One of our favorite hymn at home. Listening to this story reminds me of my Late Dad who always tells us the story about this Hymn sung around Methodist Churches around my Home country, Fiji Islands 🇫🇯
The very first time I heard this I was in a children’s home away from my family and all alone so desperately wanting to be held to simply be loved this song ment so much to me The Lord reveals His love for me as He wrapped His arms around me and still does till this day He is my bestest friend !!!!💕💕💕💕💕💕💕💕💕💕💕💕💕💕💕💕💕💕💕💕💕💕💕💕💕💕💕💕💕💕💕💕💕💕💕💕
Thank you. This hymn reached me in childhood and is still very dear to me. Jesus has always been that friend. Thank you, Lord for the man that even in his sorrow wrote this hymn reflecting your love for us.
Tears fall as I too remember my Aunt Alizabeth who suffered horribly with Epilepsy seizers. She sang this song all the time. No matter what pain she bore.. I miss her now.. She is at her rest.. but oh!! she loved her Lord... Because she was a small light in my young world. I too came to know the Lord later in life.. I too have found such a friend a wonderful friend in JESUS!!. My heart breaks for the author of this AMAZING song.. But He too will see Jesus, Then all his pain no more to bear.
This was one of my Mothers favourite hymns. How beautiful the lyrics and the truth in them forever reminding us WHO the Truest, Faithful Friend in our lives is Only JESUS!
I have viewed this video many many many time that I cannot count over several years and it still moves me motivates me spiritually and touches my heart. Thank you Jesus Christ You are the Savior and one true faithful best Friend. "Oh what friend we have in Jesus" Oh, what peace we often forfeit Oh, what needless pain we bear All because we do not carry Everything to God in prayer. God Bless everyone here.
The Lord is always there for us, he has done wonderful things in my life. I am nothing without him. Thank you lord Jesus for all being a part of my life.
This hymn is helping me through this rough times... learning this story, it just made me understand more how Jesus is here with me. Blessed be Joseph and praised be God... for allowing this blessing from Joseph words to keep helping those in need yet in his eternal rest.
Thank you for posting as I wept through this video. God certainly has used this hymn greatly and we sang it this morning during service. I've also had the privilege of meeting Dr. Al Smith on the video what a wealth of knowledge he had of hymns.
What a revelation of God's authentic character! I've just come from a funeral of a 42yrs old father, husband and son. Moses battled with cancer for 2 years. I witnessed his family pour their wealth and support to save his life but God relieved him of the pain. Looking at the helpless and devastated father, kids and wife was painful. I'm consoled by this song knowing that amid the loss, Jesus is a friend who's closer than a brother. He'll never leave us nor forsake us, a present help in times of trouble. It is well.
Really Indeed Our Lord Jesus is a true Friend I m just healing myself from a broken heart by a dear friend I came across this video Comforted me God bless & thank you for this video
I loved this hymn as a little girl and I love it still, over 60 years later. He has been my most beloved friend all the days of my life. What great sorrow this hymn writer suffered, then how he demonstrated Christ's love by doing good deeds for people who needed it most. That is the Christian way. We are each appointed to do certain good deeds. What good deeds are you appointed to do this day? You will discern that by the needs of the poor and needy people you encounter. Don't turn aside from your God-given appointments to do lesser things.
Nihal Jayamanne In the Bible we are told that salvation comes by believing on the Lord Jesus Christ who died on the cross for our sins and raised from the dead by the power of God's Holy Spirit to show His power over sin, death, and the devil...that He died in my place for me...and that I need to accept it by faith that He died for me! This is to be Born Again as the Holy Lord Jesus Christ taught must take place in order for salvation which is a reality...to take place.
Mine as well ,....i am struggling with four kids ...i have no job ..my husband just lost his job onths ago ...our house and other property under auction .. MY KIDS CAN HARDLY GO TO SCHOOL BECAUSE I CANT PAY THERE FEE ....i am sad ...friends and relatives have turned their backs on us ...it is not easy at all ...i am sick ...and the word of God is all i crave for ...it is a honor to know that He....JESUS hasn't left me ...
I have walked through a deep valley for just above five years, but I know the Lord and his great grace has sustained me. I find myself experiencing deeper, more serious prayer and the desire to listen to great hymns that bring encouragement. One such hymn is "Be Still My Soul". Another is "Jesus Saviour Pilot Me". I am also acknowledging my complete helplessness and complete dependence on his timing and direction. "In all thy ways acknowledge him, and he shall direct thy paths".
As a christian we have to not only walk on the mountain top but in the valley. Jesus said he would never leave us or forsake us, and as I look back can see that my precious LORD and SAVIOR was always there with me. OH WHAT A FRIEND WE HAVE IN JESUS.
'How Great Thou Art' and 'In the Garden' are 2 old hymns that always take me to church. Found this story from listening to 'Crying in the Chapel' by Elvis, also very tender song.
I have had a lot of disappointment in my life but I always turn to this song and I will have hope again but just now I hear the story behind the song. I will trust in God still I die because in my most difficult moments that I even thought of succid I turn to God and he gave strength thank you Jesus
I love this hymn I did not get the meaning until this year my great grandmother would play this hymn and I was a child but this hymn has been a blessing to me
I haven’t been to church in so long. This song came to my mind out of nowhere last night. 12 years ago was the last time I ever heard this hymn. How amazing is the Lord.
What a story to ponder on. When we are tossed by life billows. The Story of Joseph Sriven is deeply moving. He endures the death of his childhood love, a day before their wedding. For a second time, he endures the death of another woman he loved a couple of weeks before their wedding - What a Tragedy in his life. Inspite of it all he found extraodinary friendship with God which gave him purpose and hope. Indeed what a friend we have in Jesus.
My grandmother's favorite hymn. It has grown to be one of my favorites as well. Jesus has been my comfort through painful losses, a previous major health situation, and my current one. In my loneliness and isolation during this chronic illness - He has been a close loving father and faithful friend. Grateful to know Him.

Thank you for this video. Someone said a true friend is that person who in your darkest hour while the whole world is walking out, this, your friend comes walking in. After 40 years of being a Christian I only wish that I would've been to Jesus the Friend that He has been to me. He has been all that and more and continues to be. God bless.
Same, even though I am very new in the body of Christ
Dale Tilley Same here.

That is an absolutely perfectly true comment!
"Greater love hath no man than this, that a man lay down his life for his friend- John 15:13" the most lovely hymn.
crimson jebakumar how I love this word, I have meditated on it for so many times. I saw it and got so excited hahahaha

A Ghanaian living in the United States of America, who is also watching this in 2020
God is great, a great test and testimony for this generation and the generations to come.
Glory to your name our Lord and Savior Jesus Christ.
💙🙌🏼
Im an African living in a city in Ontario Canada as this man of God! Wow May Hod use me to free and minister his people here.
This was my late father's favourite hymn, praise God for men like my dad who taught me that there is no friend like Jesus.
Jesus has been my friend now for 52 years. Although I've strayed in the past, and followed after other things, serving myself, I found Him to be as close as a silent prayer. I find my walk with Him gets sweeter as time passes.
Alot of the great hymns were birthed from the pain, sorrow and trials the authors went through. What a friend, it is well, amazing grace...
I have decided to follow Jesus
I'm brazilian and this hymn always makes my heart beats in Peace.
I was baptized by my friend Kid, I told him my faith in Jesus and he proceeded to baptize me in our community swimming pool. What a friend we have in Jesus.
Thank You Jesus, You are my friend, and Savior!
Amen
as a born again blood bought child of GOD...as a recovered drug addict( 25yrs) whom GOD broke that band of wickedness...and as a jail house preacher and street preacher and pastor...I so thank my LORD JESUS CHRIST whom was beaten bloodied mocked crucified...for a wretch like me
Praise be unto CHRIST JESUS
I want to bear testimony that I know God hears and answers our prayers. He knows and loves each of us personally. There is a purpose to all things, even heartbreaking sorrow. Perhaps we have these challenges so we can become the people we need to be in order to reach our full potential.
Amen.
Amen! Thank you God!
That is so true! His hand is in everything for our good and never for our destruction.
This beautiful song is so popular. It has given me comfort when I am down, and the Lord Jesus gave me comfort. ,
All the best hymns come from people who have lived through real life tests.
Im crying...😭😭😭 i know i am not alone when i have jesus
Eat less soy
I am sure my father never knew this story, but oh what a faith the writer. Tragedy at times makes us bitter and sometimes we think that only when everything is going 'right' that we are blessed. Do we see how many persons through the ages have been blessed by this man's pain. When we have pain take it to Jesus, He's the friend who will never leave you nor forsake you.
Amen to that!
i am reminded of another great song-which rigs true even today.....
"Standing somewhere in the Shadows you'll find Jesus
He's a friend who always cares and understands
Standing somewhere in the shadows you'll find him
You'll know him by the nail prints in His hands"
Inpam Moses That was my favourite song at nightly devotions at college. I did not know it had more verses. I will look it up. Thanks! God bless you.
Amen and Amen
I just watched this (2019) from Kenya Africa! So touched!
I love that hymn, but I didn't know its story. Well, while watched this video, I thought about what faith is, and I came to the conclusion to have faith is to hope and love God even when we haven't answer, or even throught adversity.
He hla hi a va nung em..ka ngai thla ning thei lo ..ka thlarau min ti harh tu ani ..ka va ngaina. em..
Thank you Jesus for being our friend. I love you so much! I believe in your power. I’ve never felt fulfilled without you. I trust your work in my life. Thank you Jesus for bearing my burdens.
He was crucified on a cross of wood but he made the hill on which it stood.
AMEN
charles mays wow
And the tree on which He'd bleed
@@paulinmiami7671 The real thing is; He was crucified by the same ones He loved to death..
No greater friend than Jesus. Today I was reminded of that with tears. 💧
I'm from India,,, This is my favorite Hymn
When it came to the part where he found love again, I was feeling joy for him, but then when she came down with pneumonia, and died, I actually said out loud, " oh, no!" Both of His ladies were very beautiful. I wonder if God had intended him all along to be single. I truly wish He had written some other things that would help singles in spiritual life. It is extremely difficult for most, to live absolutely purity. I love this hymn and often sing it to myself. Thank -you Jesus for being our very best friend, and helping us be a good friend to others. Thank you for this inspiriting video!
It can be very difficult to live a pure life...indeed. I am trying.
Im the good Lord intended on him being single i too love this hymn
Glorious.. This hymn is a blessing now for many...millions....
Hymns of Glory.
Passed down from heaven, through the pen
Of a great servant.
This hymn is a for taste of glory.
whenever I am having a rough day, I am glad that I can always come here and watch this video and feel uplifted. What a friend we have in Jesus.Yes lord
I love this hymm. It was my mom's favorite song too. Lost my mom in 2014, she made her peace with the Lord. The words of this song is so very true.
With our Saviour, GOD's LOVE triumphs over EVERYTHING!
Thank you. This hymn reached me in childhood and is still very dear to me. Jesus has always been that friend. Thank you, Lord for the man that even in his sorrow wrote this hymn reflecting your love for us.
Ive watched this video in 7 years back and cried and thanked him for this beautiful him ... Now im going back all over again .. old is truely gold 🥲🥲
What a friend he truly is. Thank you Jesus. What a story for beautiful song
Heartbreaking story! But this song loved by the whole world!
Sadly theres 311 people who disliked the video
What a friend we have in Jesus!! He has carried me thru so many hard times in life.. than you Lord...
My late mum's favourite hymn. This kept her going and faithful in Jesus. I listen to her singing when things were down.
It is said that God recruits some of His best soldiers from the highlands of affliction. This is a case in point.
Friends will fail us but our savior Jesus He'll never fail He is a true friend in good and bad times. To God be the glory.
What an admirable story behind a beautiful hymn..
Wonderful documentary.
My dear Mum's favourite hymn which she knew word for word and lived out all her life
one of the songs my grandmother used to sing in church that was sung by her choir sisters at her funeral in 1962
@Nicholas Moore Hello there, friend.
@Nicholas Moore That's a very old picture. God bless you. Have a nice evening.
One of mine and my mother’s favorite hymns. She’s been with Jesus 8 years now.
Beautiful story also very sad thank GOD for people like this, that restore our faith in trouble times praise GOD
"Oh what friend we have in Jesus" Oh, what peace we often forfeit
Oh, what needless pain we bear
All because we do not carry
Everything to God in prayer.
I'll never sing or listen to this song the same way again! Thank you so much~Blessings!
It is well.
Really Indeed Our Lord Jesus is a true Friend
I m just healing myself from a broken heart by a dear friend
I came across this video
Comforted me
God bless & thank you for this video
I loved this hymn as a little girl and I love it still, over 60 years later. He has been my most beloved friend all the days of my life.
What great sorrow this hymn writer suffered, then how he demonstrated Christ's love by doing good deeds for people who needed it most. That is the Christian way. We are each appointed to do certain good deeds. What good deeds are you appointed to do this day? You will discern that by the needs of the poor and needy people you encounter. Don't turn aside from your God-given appointments to do lesser things.
One of my favorites. Thank you for sharing. Now the hymn has even deeper meaning. Thank You Lord Jesus for Your love. Amen.
What can I say.... I'm deeply move by the story. Let all the lonely and troubled soul finds comfort through this amazing hymn
What a humble man of God!! Thank you for sharing !!! 💜
Beautiful - thank you for tell the story!
yes ! what a friend indeed.
love him like a child loves
the unblemished purity of love. is the secret of salvation
Everytime i watch this everything inside me gets so calm and all my pains gets ease..THANK YOU GOD..GOD BLESS YOU ALL!!
Awww , that's a sad one . I love learning about how these Hymns come about . Thank you for sharing .
God knew just what I needed today, and the reminder that he is always here, thank you Jesus
So was I, Had to go through the darkest time of my life from 2007 to 2015. That was when I found strength and comfort in Jesus.
God is God no matter,
painful life must have been
this is a concrete relationship with the Lord!
"What a friend we have in Jesus " the best hymn I like and keeps me going forward in life god bless you all
really touched my heart, truly we have a wonderful friend in Jesus. am a living testimony
I am watching this 12 years later, I am grateful and thank God for this Hymn .
Praise Jesus, it just brought tears in my eyes
I love this hymn I did not get the meaning until this year my great grandmother would play this hymn and I was a child but this hymn has been a blessing to me
this was my mum's favorite hymn and I always remember her everytime i hear this song :)
Doreen Mammah Thanks for summarizing the story behind one of my favorite hymns What a friend we have in Jesus
The best so ng ever written in Christian songs.
I chose this hymn to be sang at our wedding in 2001 by the children's choir. 🙏🙏❤
My grandmother's favorite hymn. It has grown to be one of my favorites as well. Jesus has been my comfort through painful losses, a previous major health situation, and my current one. In my loneliness and isolation during this chronic illness - He has been a close loving father and faithful friend. Grateful to know Him.
To all, please pray for me during my time of trials.
Glory to the lamb of God. I don't see how anyone makes it through life without his precious love and forgiveness.
My daughter of 6 learnt this Hymn last week and it was interesting to know it's history.
It's so true.. we need the Lord more than we realize. The ones that do know this.. are very few..but so blessed.
How are you
Thank you for publishing the story that inspired such a timeless hymn. Bless God.
