OK list your kit of lenses below! Also, what are your dream lenses to own?? Any lenses you wish you didn't buy?
I regret buying a 70-300 tamron lens for my 80D. It was the cheapest one without stabilization, so now I'm stuck with both camera and zoom lens without stability. Super hard to film, even with a gimbal :)
Love my 10-18mm and I use it all the time, as well as my nifty fifty. I have started using my 18-55 kit lens more and more tho, I kind of like it.
Need a marco to shoot food. Some say my head is too big when use wide lens:(
Canon 35mm f1.4ii, canon 50mm f1.2, 85mm f1.2ii, 100mm macro 2.8is and I am selling my 24-70 f2.8ii
I need the 16-35 so bad, currently saving up for it!
Sigma 18-35mm f/1.8 (thank God I got a good copy of this lens), Canon 70-200mm f/4L IS USM, Canon 18-135 IS Nano USM, Canon and Sony 50mm f/1.8
This video prevented an extremely lengthly text I was going to send you asking about lenses. YOU DA MAN.
lolol. I had a feeling you were going to text me.
Great video Chris. Maybe I’ll find an old broken 70-200 to walk into the building with just so I can look pro. Then I’ll take it off and shoot with my normal gear.
hahahaha.
Me: "oh uhhhh, you know what, this would look better on my 30mm... give me one second. 😶"
For portraits/headshots anywhere you’ve got space, the 70-200 can’t be beat.
thank you for your honest opinion, and not trying to sell us on a specific product. cheers!
I’m so glad you made this video! I recently made my first “big” lens purchase and I got the 16-35mm f/2.8 and I’ve been wanting to see what I wanted next and the lenses you mentioned definitely solidified what I want to get next. You’re the man Chris, can’t wait to see what you do next.
So informative and easy to understand! Thank you Chris. I always look forward to this quality content
Rocking my Canon T5i. In my bag right now. The kit lens 18-55 f3.5, my 50mm f1.8, Tokina 11-16mm F2.8, and my trusty 75-300mm f4. Plus whatever tripod I need for the day.
Possibly my favorite video by you Chris! Thank you for clarifying a lot! Please do more of these :)
Sony GM 24-70 2.8 ❤❤❤❤
Literally the only lens I own and it's so good. Very very versatile and I work professionally. Saving for a 16-35. Probably just the f4 though. Thanks for the vid, Chris! Always look forward to your uploads!
Chris Hau ,This deserves wayyyy more views. straight forward and honest.
great work !
Thanks for the suggestions Chris! It was so helpful to hear you talk about not only your go to lenses but, also your "I should have rented that" lense. It reminds me to rent gear because I always forget that is an option
Very full video! Mainly about lenses but also you talk about business and other additional info that relates to those things. I love that. Great job dude! :D You are getting better my friend!
Thank you so much for this. I just started my journey of owning my photography business. I bought a Nikon D7100 and for my first lens, I bought a 50mm 1.8. I am still learning about what I want for the next lens to buy and this video really helped. Looks like the 24-70 will be my next goal. Although I really liked the quote you said and I definitely post that around my desk to look at every day.
This is an amazing video man! I'm a traveler and videographer myself, I think what you had to say was spot on.
Great storytelling, I'm stoked your channel came up in my recommended!
Thanks for the info. Always great watching you having some fun and sharing.
Thank you for always helping creators. Another great video with great information.
THANK YOU CHRIS.....THANK YOU FOR MAKING THIS THING SO SIMPLE, NO FRILLS, NO COMPLICATIONS.JUST PLAIN OLE GOOD ADVICE. THANK YOU
Thanks Chris...good tips and starting points for lenses. I enjoy hearing what other people are using or like.
Love this, Chris! Great detail and honest info, and you're preaching to what has been going on in my brain! 24-70, baby!! Woo!
Hey man, great video. You have been super inspirational during my journey shifting from casual to professional. Thanks again
Chip away at it everyday.
Yes! 24-70 2.8 is my best friend with basically everything, especially weddings!! It made such a difference.
Helpful as always Chris cheers!
If you are just starting out buy vintage film lenses and needed adaptors and you can have a huge focal range for a fraction of the cost! Not to mention old lenses have a nice look that new lenses dont have. Useful for filmmaking too! :)
Just the video I've been looking for... subscribed!
Love this video Chris! I always debate which lens I should get next. You really put things into perspective. Thanks!
Love the Totoro poster on your wall, also great video and insight into what a professional thinks about their gear
The 16-35mm is on top of my wish list for lenses, I hope I will get it soon
The order in which I got my gear, working as a Geologist/Hobbyist Photographer:
02-2018 - Sony a7RIII
02-2018 - Sony 16-35mm GM - Most used/favourite lense, great for astrophotography too.
05-2018 - Sony 70-200mm GM + Sony x1.4 converter - Great lense for outdoor or large area events, yeah awesome candid shots, photos from these were commented on Facebook the most.
07-2018 - Sony 85mm 1.4 GM - Great in Low light environment especially when you can't/don't want to use a flash also the background separation is incredible, even vs my other GM lenses.
12-2018 - Sony 24-70mm GM - Haven't used it that much yet, but only "just" got it.
01-2019 - Sony 90mm 2.8 Macro - Least used lense so far, used it for photographing my rock/crystal collection, got it 2nd hand at a good price. Used focus stacking processing to get most of lense.
02-2019 - Sony RX100 MkVA - Used it for work all the time, when I don't need carry the extra size or need the mega pixel.
Next lenses will be probably 100-400mm GM &/or Sony 100mm 2.8 STF, but in no rush to get one. Thought about the 24mm GM, but got enough lenses which covers that focal range, but will get one if I do nightclub event photography.
My Peak Design Everyday Sling 10L can fit: a7RIII; 16-35mm, 85mm and a Godox V860II-S Flash or another lense if I know I don't need a flash and the Vanguard VEO 2 264CB Carbon Fiber Tripod. It all fits if you pack it right. Have fitted the 70-200mm with body and 2 lense before, but was very tight fit with all my bubble wrap inside :)
Has any RUclipsr/somebody gotten around to do a comparison Sony 16-35mm GM vs Sony 24mm GM pixel peeping, both are consider very sharp leases, but which is better? Next video idea!
So glad you did this video. I was actually looking for you to re-watch another tips video you did and I forgot what it was called. But now I have found it and subbed
Thanks
I loved hearing about all of this! Great information here! :)
Very nice Chris! Very helpful as I just transitioned to Sony myself! Thanks for the awesome content
Awesome vid Chris! Recently upgraded my arsenal of lenses. So my friend who bought a new camera body to get into photography I've lent him the ones I no longer use. It may not be a f/1.4 but I did just get the 85mm f/1.8 for my birthday and it is A BEAST! Keep up the great work
In the lens bag right now is the Sony 10-18 f4, Sony 55 f1.8, Sony 28-135PZ f4, Sony 100-400 with 1.4x teleconverter. I've been on the fence about adding the 24-70 f2.8 to replace some adapted Canon glass. This helps.
so good as always man!!
Awesome video my dude!
Awesome content Chris. Lots of great ideas. Looking forward to more. I also built a content creation machine a few weeks ago.
Great video Chris!
Great video Chris! Thank you! I'm just starting out as a videographer and I recently found your channel - a lot of amazing tips! And as a random side note, your place looks exactly like our previous appt at Graydon Hall in TO - same layout. Chances of that are slim but would've been cool to bump into you.
So funny - lizzie and I were thinking of getting a place there. Actually yonge and eg.
Cool video Chris its reassuring to hear you talk about lending and hiring. I think a lot of people feel that they need to own every lens under the sun to get the job done but careful planning for your budget can really help you cater for any job. I find the sony 18-105mm f4 to be a super versatile lens on the crop sensor for a wide range of things. Its small and neat and pretty dam durable.
Great stuff Chris, thanks for sharing!
It’s like you read my mind! I’ve had my eye on the 24-70 since you mentioned it in your MB shoot out on the frozen lake...
Is there a time you would choose the 24-70 over the 16-35 as a first lense?
Heading to my biggest shoot ever tomorrow (probably my biggest for a long time!) super hyped! Too excited so I gotta put it down here :D
Love Totoro. Greetings from Argentina mate. Nice channel by the way.
Graet video as always Chris! Gonna invest with the 16-35mm for my Venice's shots!
As a newbie to this whole camera thing, this video was super helpful Chris. I am thinking of renting some lenses to try them out. I just have the one lens, 24-70 kit lens.
"the tools do not build the chair"
LOVE this quote Chris! Keep smashing it man!
Such a powerful quote.
Chris Hau it sure is! Excited for the day our paths might cross!
Great video... very helpful Chris! ❤️❤️❤️
Just picked up the a6500 and sigma 18-35, the AF and bokeh are outrageous 😍 great video Chris, enjoyed hearing your advice on what to eventually progress to 👌
This video made me sub, good work man
If you're looking into the 24-70 2.8, I STRONGLY recommend the Tamron 25-78 2.8. It's nearly as sharp and significantly lighter and less expensive. I have the 16-35 2.8GM and the Tamron and I love the kit. Check it out!
So i can either buy the exact kit you are recommending or get the 24-70 G-Master and the 16-35 F4
Which one combination would you recommend?
between those two combos, i would recommend the one he mentioned, the Tamron 28-75 plus the 16-35gm. honestly, even the tamron plus the 16-35 f4 would be fantastic kit.@@karankhosla3964
Quick question, if I have a 50mm 1.4, how would that compare to a 24-70mm where you zoom into 50mm? Would the depth of field be much different, or pretty similar.
Informative video thanks! This is the only lens I bought for my Sony a7III. It is really versatile indeed. You can turn it into a 105mm to get a bit closer to your subject by switching to APS-C mode (but then you get only 8MP). What would you recommend to buy next as a top priority? 70-200 ?
Thank you so much for the info brother!!!
Nice Video man, Love ur stuff.
Great video, Chris! Thanks for the tips. I have a 50mm f1.4 and I love it! Have you used Sigma lenses?
I love them the 3 Lens you mentioned..
Thanks for the info great video
Great video Chris. I have my canon 1300d (t6) and have had it for over a year now, I only just recently purchased a new lens to upgrade from the kit lens (tamron 18-440mm). I keep saying to myself that one day Ill upgrade the camera but the thing is, IMO I am taking some good photos with what I have. Thanks for the tips and keep up the good work!
Chris I figured out why I love your videos. You eyes are simply smiling all time! :D
:)
Just bought the Sony A7iii and filmed all my b-roll out of focus 😂 I’m so used to filming on a compact in auto mode. Love learning though! Thanks for the lens advice, very helpful! Maybe a beginners series about ISO etc?
That doesnt even make sense.. The autofocus on the A73 is way better than any compact camera..
Compact cameras have very close to zero depth of field
Ades I had it set on the wrong focus mode and the stuff I thought I was focusing on I wasn’t. Real newb mistake, but ofc focus is tons better than compact, wasn’t bashing the camera but the user 🙂
Very informative Chris. Thank you
Great video Chris, what camera do you use?
Very Helpful. Thanks.
Thank you Chris! This is very helpful video.
When you already have a 24-70, what do you suggest to by next first? The 16-35 or 70-200?
Hey brother! I shoot with the 16-35 GM. The lens i am currently trying to get is the 85mm. Trying to decide between the GM 1.4 or the Sony/Zeiss 1.8. Not sure if the 0.4 aperture difference will make a huge deal or not. Need to also pick up the 90mm Macro as i do product reviews etc., so need a macro lens.
Sick video chris!
Hey Chris :) Great Vid man. Very insightful!
Would you still recommend the 24-70mm f2.8 for an APS-C Canon 80d? Would you recommend it for video too?
Chris, you should consider picking up the Sony 85mm f1.8! It's a lot more affordable than its 1.4 brother, but the bokeh difference is negligible and it's so much lighter and smaller! Picked it up recently and I'm in love!
What do you think about using speedboosters with less expensive f4 lenses? I started with a 60D + 18-135mm, then a 50mm f1.4, then a 10-22mm f4, then I got an EOS M + EF-M adapter, then a 70-200mm f4 L, then a 5D2 + 24-105mm f4 and then a 24mm f4 TS-E. I also started with a low end Slik video tripod, then got a manfrotto video tripod with bowl and 501HDV fluid head, then a 055xprob with 3D photo head, then a CF version of the same video tripod + head, as well as a video monopod (older manfrotto before the feet were a thing). Also got a proaim spark slider and built a nice shoulder rig and a compact follow focus rig along the way...as well as got my drone license, a P3A and P4P. Much of it was bought used and it ALL was made to pay for itself many times over! 💪😎
Great topic! With as good as sensors are these days, do you think it’s necessary to get a 1.8 50 prime if you’re trying to replicate Brandon Woefel style dusk shots? Or can you make do with a 2.8 24-70?
Working with a Canon 80d, I have the 18-55mm & 55-250mm kit lenses. I just recently bought a 24mm pancake that I'm playing with. I also have a grip of vintage Pentax lenses (mix between eBay & thrifting) -- my favorite of those so far is a Rikenon 28-105mm f/3.5-4.5 macro (this one is a push/pull zoom)
thanks for this chris! the three lenses im gna invest in next are the tamron 17-28, 28-75 and the sony 70-200 f4. this video may be quite a while ago, but since its my first time watching, it helps me know that i may be making the better decision now, especially since im into sports video & photo. next one after is likely to be an 85mm :)
Hey Chris! What about those with crop sensor cameras?! Do you still recommend the 24-70 and the 16-35?
Hi Chris! Would you still recommend the 24-70 and 16-35 for an aps-c body (sony a6500)? if not, what alternative lenses would you recommend for the a6500? :D I actually own a 10-18 f4 and a 50mm (tbh, I find the lens switching tedious, and the 50mm too limiting for far shots.) I was thinking about getting a 16mm f1.4 from sigma, and maybe switching the 10-18 for something else. What are your thoughts about this? By the way, I can see why the 24-70 and 16-35 are big investments, considering they're both at f2.8 so you still get a some bokkeh. Super awesome! Just not sure if there's an alternative for the aps-c line. :D Cheers! Super loved your video.
Great video Chris, thank you.
I have a question: Nowadays, would you bought the 24 70 GM over the tamron 28 75 f2.8? Mostly for profesional video works (weddings, promovids...).
I have the a7III & zhiyun crane 2, also im planning to buy the 16 35GM for video, maybe with all the GM lenses you probably have more color correspondence but the price...
amazing video! Thank you
Great video.. I am in the same boat, after visiting Horse Shoe bend in Arizona realized I need the 12-24. Purchased it back in March but haven’t used it yet.. I own the 24-105 and also own the 18mm batis. Love the size of the batis but miss the 16-35 range that I use to get with my 16-35 f4.
Already selling my 12-24 but thinking also about selling my batis for the 16-35 2.8
Do you think the 24-105 and 16-35 gm is a lot to travel/hike with? I would have good range and low light covered
Interesting. I like the Zeiss Batis 1.8/85mm. Are you averse to adapted manual vintage prime lenses - no mention in the vid? Also, “take your photography to the next level” I’ve heard many times. Just how many levels are there?😀
Thanks Chris, very nice video, great information!
Hope it helped you feel more informed.
great vid Chris!
Totally agree with your choices. I don’t like swapping lenses when out shooting so on model/portrait shoots I have a double camera strap with A7Rii and the 85mm f/1.4 G Master and the A7Riii with the 24-70 f/2.8 G Master. When traveling I was using the 24-240 f/3.5-6.3 but on a recent trip overseas I tried the A7Riii with the 28mm f/2.0 and the new RX10M4 24-600 f/2.4-4.0. Using the 28mm in all the low light situations. Just got back so still deciding if that was the best travel choices.
Could you relate to APS-C cropped cameras? Which lenses would you recommend
Thanks for this Chris! Been itching to add a new lense to my kit. Currently using the Canon EOS M100 with the 15-45mm kit lense and then also have a nifty 50mm.
I’m going to look at the 24-70mm that you recommended. Thanks again!
Thank you for this video. Im a newbie. Do you have a video on prime lenses? What are ur thoughts on the 24mm pancake lens to photograph the stars?
I'm looking at a 15-30 2.8 tamron lens as its the best I can find for Nikon F-mount to my tastes. Do you think the loss of 5 mm between 30 and 35 is a big deal? My other two lenses in a 50mm prime and a 90mm macro lol. I personally actually really like the macro I have many uses for in in product shots and in nature photography of flowers and it serves well for portraits too. I've used it for other things too but I think it kills in those categories. Depends on what you shoot.
I use the 18-105 f/4 is my main lense, and I think that its a very versatile lense. You think its a good one? Because its not on tour lenses kit, and maybe if another is better I can think to change it to another one, but I’m very proud of this lense.
Love your content! I want de 24-70mm so bad! Love from Ecuador
:)
Das 16-35mm steht ganz oben auf meiner Wunschliste der Objektive, mal schauen wann es endlich soweit ist!
Vintage primes are my thing. SMC takumars are my fav, 85 1.8 and 50 1.4 now. 35 F2 inbound from Japan so we’ll see how she compares.
Mark Holtze i’m watching your videos. Love the niche! 🙌🏼
I have a Canon 6D Mark II with a 16-35mm f/4, 24-105mm f/4 and a Sigma 24mm f/1.4 (I also have the Nifty Fifty but don't use it as much). Pretty happy with my gear overall but may upgrade to the 24-70mm f/2.8 next year.
Can you do a video talking about which of these lenses are best for Photography vs videogrpahy?
If beginners shoot APS-C (like me and some others in this comments section) the lineup would be a bit different, right?
For me, my Canon 17-55, 2.8 is a good allround lens and similar to the 24-70 on full frame.
Philip Lonsing exactly what I was thinking about, apsc and full frame equivalents
Lots of pros shoot aps-c on Fuji. The 18-55 Fuji kit lens is great value and am amazing lens. And lots of pros shoot only primes.
So big question, looking at upping my kit. Set on 24-70 f2.8, but then undecided. Do I just go one of 16-35mm or 70-200mm GM, or get f4 versions of both?
Just got the fe 24 105 f4. I needed the stabilization built in.
Definitely more versatile and lighter than the 24-70
Love the video! Thanks for the opinion. I have a question, I want to buy a SIGMA 18-35 / f 1.4 because my camera has crop sensor, but all the reviews I see about What Lens to buy recomend lenses in 2.8. I would like opinion and advice about if is good in 1.4 or if it would be better in 2.8, Thanks!
These would all be full frame cameras correct? If we’re using a crop sensor (canon 1.6) should I be doing the math to get a get a lens that meets the focal lengths you mentioned after the crop?
Thanks Chris, keep up the great work!
The reason why people buy gear is sometimes just fun. I love buying als lenses and figure out what they are capable. That help me to become a better photographer. Because it is a cheap and easy way of finding out what I like and what works best for me and I get to know a lot of different ways of photography.
the 16-35 and 24-70 gmasters are seriously my favorite lenses out there!
Hundo p man! Greatest lenses.
My Neighbor Totoro!!! :D Chris, lots of respect man.
