Fender Duo Sonic Intonation Problem at the Nut String Slot

  • This Fender Duo Sonic guitar had an intonation problem that was caused by an incorrectly slotted string slot at the nut. The string was not seated properly inside of the nut string slot, which effectively extended the scale length of the string, which in turn caused an issue with the intonation.
In addition, the high E string was producing a sitar buzz, which was also caused by a faulty string slot at the nut.
We can clearly see all that under the microscope. So, I carved a new nut and solved the intonation problem, as well as the sitar buzz.

Yeah man... glad you like it. BTW, I'm just discovering your channel and I just watched your Peter Frampton Gibson LP video. Fascinating! I'm not sure if you know, John Fogerty has a similar story.

I have the same exact guitar, same exact problem. I noticed you built one from scratch. If I asked a Luthier to install a pre-cut nut like a Graph-Tech, am I wasting my time?

I would love to be able to evaluate your guitar before making a recommendation. As a general rule, no, you would not be wasting your time with an improvement of that nature. Assuming that there are no major issues with the guitar.

What make and model of microscope do you use? Thanks

Hey, thanks for watching... I actually have three microscopes. The old one is Leica, the one at the studio is Vision Scientific and the one at the shop is just a generic, no-brand-name (that I know of) type.
The important thing is the camera. And to be perfectly honest, I am really not happy with any of the cameras that I have. I have two cameras in active use and I also have two other cameras that did not work out well.
All are Hayear brand and I am having issues with all of them. The company is hard to deal with, especially with exchanges. The two cameras that I use actively had to be exchanged, as the original ones had some issues (not recording videos at full length, recording glitches, etc).
Even after I managed to exchange the cameras I still had to settle with some issues, as I got tired of dealing with the company. As you might have noticed, the camera at the studio is still recording some glitches.
So, at this point I actually don't have a good recommendation on any reliable microscope cameras that fit the budget.
Hope this helps and tanks for your interest.

We occasionally see issues on Fender nuts, regardless of model. It just depends on which person worked on the nut at the factory.
