Quick Fix for a Tight Control Plate on Electric Guitars & Basses
I own and have owned dozens of Fender guitars but I never ever played a Fender acoustic I found decent, they should stick to what they're good at.
I had one, and it was really awesome. Honestly. Maybe there is a bumb one here and there. I know what I'm looking for in a good guitar. It just never had these problems.
Of course, they're not all like this one. This one should have been a factory reject. Factory rejects are a natural part of mass production. On that note, that is why RUclips guitar reviews are completely useless. No one will ever be reviewing the actual guitar that anyone else is going to buy.
Hello. What microscope do you use? Do you have any suggestions for someone looking to purchase one for guitar work?

Good review.
Thanks.
In a world of guitar seriousness this guy lands. Thank you!
As long as I don't land in the water, LOL.
I bought a $200 Jackson bass and after about 3 weeks of consistent playing, the frets are in need of maintenance as there is a noticeable amount of material that has worn out. Any advice?
If your other guitars are not going through the same rate of fret wear I would imagine that they used fret wire with less than 18% nickel. All fret wire is not the same, and the 18% nickel is the most common one. But on budget guitar they might be using a different alloy, with less nickel. Unfortunately there is o oversight about what kind of fret wire must be used on guitars. Factories do whatever they want and as long as the guitar looks good on the sales floor they are happy. They do not lose any sleep over what will happen to the guitars once they collect all the payments. They just keep making more so they can sell some more after the old ones break.
Roller bridges often apply sillibant overtones to the string. The rollers regularly jam up over time. The rollers are easily lost. Arocking bridge is always better.
You make some really good points.
Always better than rollers is a rocking bridge.
In my very long experience there is no roller bridge that functions reliably. The roller will often give sillibant overtones . The rollers will regularly fall out and be lost.
I believe you're right about that.
Leo Fender didn't play guitar and I suspect was an irritant to the real design team at Fender instruments. The early prototypes had a wider neck like an acoustic guitar with a wider bridge to match. Players called for a narrower neck but Leo was too stingy to retool the bridge. So the problem began and was only resolved relatively recently. Rule of thumb is that the width of the entire fingerboard at the twelth fret is the same as the bridge pitch. Luthier and machinist here. Yes totally the Plek machine is a disaster. The results are not anywhere near as good as skilled handwork.
I really appreciate that you took the time to post this comment. This is definitely a very valuable piece of information that makes sense and answers some questions, and also puts this mystery in a logical historic context. Thank you very much.
Such good English but I hear an accent. I can't figure out where you're from though. This was a great video. I enjoyed it thoroughly and subbed of course.
Glad you enjoyed it!
How far do you turn the screw in on the spring? I had to replace a broken plastic cover around the humbucker and Im not sure if the screw is in far enough or not. Thanks for any help!
It really depends on the parts (pickup, ring, spring, screw). I find it that is varies. I would recommend that you also watch this video ruclips.net/video/1KIsnrZXgUw/видео.html

Hieroglyps to me.
Excellent scientific. Excellent with real solutions to our mysteries. Great dr.
Now that it's been solved, I guess it's no longer a mystery, LOL.
I recently bought the new Buck Owens fender king man, limited edition, I bought if directly from fender, they shipped it with no packing materials at all, battery was bouncing around inside, came with no paperwork, warranty card, or anything. I had to do a lot of work to get it playing good. It sounds pretty good unplugged. I guess because it’s all solid wood and pretty light considering all the fancy paint on it.
Their guitars are usually shipped double boxed. I am surprised to hear that it was packet poorly.
Another phenomenal introduction. I suppose 70% is below average? The part of the videos from your workshop could be more focused, perhaps you could partly use a close-up camera of your face to maintain the attention. And a similar mike as in the introduction for same reason. Depends how much hassle and time to keep viewers needing constant entertainment. For me, learning about fixing guitars, this is a goldmine.
Most viewers leave after 5 seconds. A lot of RUclips "experts" say that the first 5 seconds of the video are crucial and they plenty of advice on how to make those 5 seconds captivating. The thing that boggles y mind is that the first 5 seconds of their own videos, advising on how to make the 5 seconds captivating, are all boring. The only reason why I watch through their advice videos is because I am hoping they would get to some new information that I don't already know.
Bummer. Looking for a decent acoustic electric for about $400. It seems this model wont do.
I wouldn't look a it that way. This was a factory defect that had to be scrapped. All Newporters are definitely not like that.
A whole book on lubricating the rollers? I think that's a joke, isn't it? Dr. Randy Andy?🤣
Dr. Randy Andy would like to personally reply to this message, but he is too busy... writing another book... about hammering a nail into a wall.
@@GuitarQuackery 🤣
BUT, does the guitar stay in tune any better?
Good question. Everything else needs to be working well first, before the bridge can make any difference.
Great vid, amazing detail. I am collecting a 2016 Gibson LP Custom ContouR8 next week and the machine heads were changed by the previous owner for Faber Klusons... same footprint on the face of the headstock but I think he might have had to bore out the holes to 10mm. On the face of it I don't think this bothers me as he considered it a players practical upgrade and purists won't like the axcess heal in any event. Apparently the ratio is now improved. What do you think ?
In real life, many actual 1958 Les Paul guitars might have been modded in that way, or another. So, if people pay extra just to have an R8 relic'd, then the change of tuning machines could be considered a genuine "relic" or whatever we want to call it.
On my 5420T I installed a Vanson Roller saddle bridge and a Bigsby B6C instead of the B60.
I've never have the opportunity to see a Vanson Roller saddle bridge in person. I'l make sure I make a video if or when one crosses my workbench.
Money for nothing but no chicks for free.
your problem is bridge
I did not think so when I had the guitar on the bench. This was a long time ago.
nice, measurements in millimeters!
Sure. I'm definitely a metric person. However, I'm sure you've noticed that I do use some imperial measurements on guitars. I've been meaning to make a video about that, actually, and explain the reasons why.
Great technical insight and setup. The nut and tailpiece setup was most helpful in fixing the D string issue on my new white RSS. Cheers
Glad to hear.
Have you seen these issues on modern G&L's?
I can't say that I specifically remember seeing it. I don't see a lot of G&Ls, though.
I use steel wool, tape up the pickups, and use a vacuum cleaner to clean up as I go.
Most techs do in fact use steel wool. Some techs use magnets to pick it up.
@@GuitarQuackery yeah, this works fine, an implementation of a vacuum cleaner are golden!.
A customer brought me one of those to check out many years ago when I ran a music store. One of the best I ever touched other than an '73 Gibson Hummingbird.
What impressed me most was actually the sound. And I really mean it. I did not play it in this video, but I wanna make another video with me or other people playing it.
@@GuitarQuackery Those are so pricey few people even know what they are or what they are worth. What a treat to see one again. I will be looking forward to that video sir.
Get a monster guitar player to bring us to our knees 🙏 with this monster guitar 👍, that justice be served, finally 😃
@@EasyThere Let's hope I can put it together. It's not easy to line up all the people to participate in a video, etc. I already spoke with Adam Smale www.youtube.com/@JazzRockswithAdam and he is interested, but there's no guarantee that we'll find a time that works for all. And I still have to discuss the idea with the owner.
Thanks, grrrreat😊 Do you pronounce Quackery - Kackery?😊🎸
That’s funny.
Well, who would have thought it possible. Facinating stuff from you again, Mr Quacky.
I’m really fortunate to be working in a big Metropolitan city where these things are more likely to happen. It is of course, also more likely to happen with a D’Aquisto Guitar since they were built on Long Island, near NYC.
@@GuitarQuackery Would love a video on your techniques for setting up, intonating and replacing those style of bridges if the opportunity arises sir. I have a 39 Slingerland Songster desperately seeking love I can't afford atm...needs a complete fret job and fretboard work. I tried using the tape sandpaper to the top and slide it back and forth but I swear the wood on the spare is petrified lol.
The bridge is fit perfectly to its place on the front by placing a chalked piece of paper on the spot and rubbing the bridge slightly back and forth on the paper along the centerline transfering the chalk to high spots on the foot of the bridge. Those are removed with a curved sharp scraper blade, repeating this process little by little until the foot reports chalk evenly across the entire surface. It needs it.
Yep, that's one of the traditional methods. Another traditional method is with water, to mark the high spots. It's actually the same principle as dentists do when they do the final touchups on new fillings. I also have a jig that can be used to clamp the bridge while moving it over a sheet of sandpaper laid over the soundboard. The owner is reluctant to let me do any of that work as it would alter the handiwork of Jimmy D'Aquisto. But I agree with you that the bridge does need it.
The handiwork of James D'Aquisto has already been altered by time, according to the old Chinese proverb. I think it safe to assume the shape of the front changed just like the neck issue which calls for alteration. In theory those gaps under the bridge indicate portions of the bridge that might just as well not be there, driven by string sound pressure but not transmitted to the front except by a circuitous route through the bridge. Jimmy raised his head from the grave and said, I set the dimension of that bridge foot intending that it be in full contact with the front according to my concept of sound! Actively played Stradivaris don't leave the shop without the bridge feet fitted perfectly with carbon paper and scraper (not sandpaper). For museum pieces it doesn't matter if they're even tuned. But these million dollar violins have had their fingerboards, pegs, peg holes, bridges and other parts reworked, refilled and replaced countless times as needed with the builders understanding these alterations would be done according to the ferrocious use by top players and the ravages of time, in faith that the concept would endure. And we respect that.
@@randykalish7558 I love how you put all this into words very nicely.
I relent for now because I know that one day, that guitar will go into the hands of one whose playing presses the limit of peak, full race performance from the instrument, and spare no effort to affect that. Then J.D. will RIP.
You wrapped a turd with a gold foil and you wrapped a wealth of skills, knowledge and methodology with a funny foil. I wish the audience knew what you were saying and I hope they don’t get fooled by none of the two wrappings. Amazing skills, methodology and holistic approach. By the way, you’ve got the "Traditional British Phlegm”, as we call it in Europe… I hope it sounds correct the terminology… Many Thanks for sharing these interesting cases.
In encounter quite a few interesting cases, but unfortunately I have to pick which ones will end up on the channel. I would have done a repair on this guitar if the customer had agreed to pay what would fairly compensate me for all the time that would need to be spent on it. But it wasn't the case. So, there's not going to be a part 2, in this case.
I’m glad that I found your channel. Your knowledge, skills,, tools and methodology impressed me. I haven’t found any other YT channel, with such an ordered and holistic approach. And some auto-claimed luthiers state some incorrect points, IMHO... Recently retired, further to 45 years in the computing and telecom industry, your style resembles mine: “Symptoms, Problem Determination, Problem Isolation, Root Cause, Problem Fix” on my environment argot… Many thanks for sharing all your experience.
I'm glad to hear you like the presentations and hopefully get some educational benefit from watching. Thanks.
I would suggest to clamp the neck into a vise, since every time you play the string, the whole neck moves around, making it hard to see what exactly you want to show. or use a sandbag (or two) to cradle the neck. the microscope sensor has a pronounced rolling shutter effect, and you want to limit the wobble as much as possible. as an alternative to your microscope, you could get macro extension tubes for your main camera, and get a better view, and use your phone as the b-cam.
Very good suggestions. I do have a heavy vise that I should be able to adapt for securing the neck. It'll take some R&D to make it work, but it is in fact something that would improve the quality of future videos. As far as the microscope goes... it has become the signature equipment of this channel and it also looks good as a prop. I am well aware of extension tubes, though and I guess it is something I could incorporate in addition to the microscope. I really appreciate you taking the time to post these suggestions.
I was just terrified that we were going to find a kidney stone.
LOL
I am thinking about steaming and bending a headstock into a piece of maple. I don't know if any manufacturers do this. Have you ever seen any attempt at this?
That's a very good idea. I personally don't know if anyone has ever done this. People come up with great ideas (which is obviously what you just did) and with billions of people on this planet, I guess the odds are that someone else has thought of it, too. But I am personally not aware of it. And even if multiple people come up with the same idea, independently, there will always be the first one. You might in fact be the first one that thought of it. And here is it, recorded for history. Thanks for sharing.
Man, you really had to check deez nuts under a microscope
Says our time is valuable, then wastes the first 80 seconds of the video with inane bull crap. Then wonders why people don't watch past 30 seconds.
Bye then. Enjoy having your brain rotted by the tik toks killing your attention span.
@@onlyusernameleft2 not the point. Point is there are guitar people out there who are much better at conveying information and at getting to the point. There is a reason there are good techers and bad teachers and pretty much everyone will prefer having easier access to information through good teachers. Taking this as a lesson is worth so much more than accusing those who you are trying to educate.
Please post links to one or two guitar tech related videos that are to your liking.
I want to thank you for a video you did about guitar nuts under the scope. When you showed that string buzz Iknew that's the weird issue I've been tracking on one of my guitars. Sure enough, got a scope on it, gently filed to make proper room and problem solved. Thanks again.
I'm really glad to hear that I was able to point you in the right direction to resolve a problem on your own guitar. Thanks for dropping by and thanks for sharing your story.
Watched the whole thing, the microscope visuals were awesome. Very useful tool in a repair shop.
Indeed it is. Now that I'm used to the microscope I can't imagine working without it and hoping to achieve the same level of outcome.
Cool to see the issue under the microscope, a picture is worth a thousand..... Important point as it effects intonation!
If a picture is worth a thousand words, imagine how much a moving picture, at 30 FPS, is worth.
Great stuff, thx a ton-i have a recent MIM roasted strat neck with same issue except it's on both sides (pretty much in same middle region) & sits/rests a little lower than flush. I have a feeling it could be a 'not quite as simple' type fix, but we'll see!
I'm surprised to hear that this could happen on a roasted maple neck. How could the wood possibly continue shrining after it's been roasted? Or did I misunderstand?
@@GuitarQuackery yes it's pretty odd...maybe it wasn't done properly at factory.
@@musefan69 that is in fact, really the only logical explanation.
Thanks for providing the insight. I approach as a player looking for an instrument that is fairly playable to begin with. After I was very impressed with the quality of a Strat Plus I started looking at Fender acoustics as a replacement for a nice Yamaha I lost on my way back from Singapore. Bottom line is I couldn't find one I could play without significant work. At the time I couldn't put my finger on what I didn't like, but your analysis makes perfect now.
Sorry to hear you lost your Yamaha. Replacement guitars never quite fill the void of the guitars that we miss. I know the feeling first hand. So I don’t believe any Fender acoustic would have done it for you.
Loved what you were playing! 🤣
Thanks.
Why even waste your time with all the other nonsense when the lifting bridge should be the 1st thing you addressed? That's the very 1st thing I would have done: call the customer and explain the issues and needed repairs. Why even waste time with everything else? It's virtually useless without addressing the bridge first
2nd. You don't adjust the truss rod to change action/string height. That's not what it's for. Why even waste your time? 🤷🤦
I believe you misunderstood the point I was trying to make. People keep asking me to do setups on guitars that can't be improved by doing setups. People also keep telling me that all they need is a truss rod adjustment. A customer dropped of that guitar in my absence and told me (over the phone) that all he needed was a truss rod adjustment to lower he action. I looked at the guitar and first thing I saw was a bridge lift (as I've explained in the video). Next thing I saw was the neck angle issue (as I've also explained in the video). Then I called the customer and explained those issues and told him that it would cost more to fix than to buy a new (or used) guitar of the same level. We cancelled the order and that's how far it went with the customer. It took hi over a month to pick up his guitar. In that time I used his guitar to make a video that shows what kind of guitars people bring to my shop, requesting setup, and more often than not just telling me to adjust the truss rod and that the guitar would be good to go (as I've explained in the video). So, for the sake of the video (for entertainment and educational purposes) I went on to demonstrate what results we would get from doing what the customers tell us to do, when they bring guitars like this one. The point of me doing these adjustments (which is what customers tell me to do when they think they know what they are talking about) was to prove that such guitars cannot be adjusted with setups. I actually thought that all that was pretty clearly explained in the video, especially given the fact that I was using the "polishing a turn" analogy. Everyone else got the point and got the joke (judging from all the other people's comments). Even the title of the vide states "Impossible setup" and the thumbnail says "the setup that can't be done".
You're correct, "You don't adjust the truss rod to change action/string height. That's not what it's for." which is exactly what I say in this video.
But good luck my friend you do awesome work and your camera colonostipy stuff is so funny
Thanks. Although it's not for everyone.
Ohhhhh boy now it's gona be 6 million people stealing your original idea that's what kills me woth youtube hardly no one is original
Oh, I really have no issues if others do the same. This is just a natural development on RUclips and is just a matter of time when it happens. It's not easy, though. I've been developing this for a few years, just to have it work the way I want to and to achieve certain optics on RUclips. Not to mention how expensive all the gear is. Thanks for dropping by.
