"There's a story behind white Duo sonic.. We were setting up for rehearsals at the old Swinghouse in Hollywood. A couple of the crew guys and I were sitting outside at a picnic table in the parking lot. The band hadn't shown up yet.
A kid (maybe late teens) walked up the driveway with that guitar. It was trashed. At some point was in a swimming pool. And at another point was in a police evidence lockup. The kid said he heard it was once John's. And wanted to return it to him. We said "Ok. He's not here right now, but we'll give it to him", assuming it was probably a bullshit attempt to meet the band. He said thanks, gave us the guitar, and walked away.
When John showed up later, we kind of flippantly told him the story, and gave him the guitar. John took it. Looked at it. And quietly smiled and said "wow". I said "Why wow?". Then John said, "I wrote Under the Bridge on this guitar". We never saw that kid again." - Dave Lee (John Frusciante's technician)

I don’t think it was his choice, Either he was lumped with it or the band bought it as it was the cheapest. It must’ve been hard for Hendrix to use.

Because of the scale length it kind of bridges between a Fender and a Gibson. A more buttery twang. And I dig how the neck pickup is kinda in between where a neck and middle pickup would be on a Strat. It seems like it would be great fun to bend the heck out of those strings. Like crazy Roy Buchanan bends!

Just purchased one of these today. Also a white 63 with Brown one ply. Its a gorgeous guitar. Its my second now and your videos have been a big influence for my choice to get my first vintage fenders. I was curious if they are really that great and they definitely are! The normal sized vintage fenders are too expensive for me, but maybe someday i could find a player for a reasonable price. Thanks for your great videos! Always enjoy your joy of playing the guitar!

Please play it somewhere... amazing! From 1956 to early 1959... the neck witdth are as wide as a regular Stratocaster or Telecaster. From late 1959-1964... the neck width became smaller.

My 1956 desert sand never comes out of the case. Sad, I know, but this video has inspired me to pull it out. Mine was an attic find. A student of NYU purchased it in 1956 on west 4th street in Greenwich Village NY. He used to pluck notes on it while reciting poetry at the Cafe Wah on MacDougal street. He took exquisite care of it and even saved the case key, owners manual and the case candy.
Thanks for the video. What amp are you using in the video?

Hi Tomo. I am a Fender lover too. I have a 24 inch late model Mustang I like but I wish I could have a 22.5 inch scale you you have here with your vintage Duosonic. Back in 1991 I received from my wife a glorious Christmas’s present. She knew I loved the Beatles and liked John Lennons Black Rickenbacker.p325. My brother helped pick it out for my surprise gift. My brother told her to get the full scale model rather than the short 20.5 scale much to my disappointment. How could I say this is not the one I wanted after the time sacrifice and money she put into this wonderful guitar. Both guitars looked the same other than the length of the necks. I understand why my brother urged her to get me the longer scale. We played music together often and he said the longer scale would be better for my technique. I understood but I liked the looks of the short scale Rickenbacker 325.
I still have my signature black triple pick up John Lennon limited edition 355JL.
When I saw you video on your short scale Duo Sonic it brought back memories of the short scale guitars. I have short fingers with limited reach, another justification for the short scale Rickenbacker I never got. Ha ha. I would love to get one of the 22.5 DuoSonics like yours. My hands would be in heaven. The only other guitar I played at a music store with a short scale was a Gibson Byrdland 22 or 21 inch scale I think. It was nice but hard to reach the upper register of the frets due to the single cut away and very large body. Great guitar though. But way out of my affordability. Around $10,000.00 New and they hold high resale price.
Anyway, love your videos and your playing. You are a Master Player or Monster Player.
    Kind regards, Jerry PAUSA

Gerald Doherty - Look around for an early year mustang neck, usually 64 or 65s. The 22 1/2’s have 21 frets while the 24 inch have 22 frets, so they’re easy to spot.

  • @fenderdepender35
    @fenderdepender35 4 года назад +3

Hi Tomo, nice sounds. Some of the early mustangs came with 22 1/2 inch necks, probably some of the leftovers from the duo sonic / music master line. I have a mustang with the 1964A neck that’s a 22 1/2 inch which is on one of my beater mustangs. Very similar in feel to the MM\DS necks. The 24 inch scale necks had 22 frets while the 22 1/2 inch scale had 21 frets so they are easy to spot.

The Duo sonic/Mustang has a beautiful design, I love it. The only thing I don't like about that instrument is the scale. I'd never swap a component of an antique and original jewel like yours, but if I had the chance to mix an actual Mustang body with an standard strat neck, I´d try it with no doubt.

    Sensei Tomo,
I really enjoy my Squier classic vibe duo sonic and Fender hs duo sonic. Yes, the 22.5 scale and 24 was available, but the 24 was more popular. Later on, Fender electric instrument company (cbs) used the left over 22.5 necks for the Fender Swinger or arrow/music lander (from “The golden age...” book). Would love to have a vintage duo sonic, but my playing needs to get better and my wallet. 🙂 I like your guitar playing (clean, funky, etc.).

Love your technique and I have a 64 Duo-Sonic in Olympic White that I love. One thing I noticed and wondered about was the difference in tone in the middle and neck positions. I'm not hearing a lot of difference in tone with the exception of some hum cancellation and a slight volume boost. Is this what you have found and is that how it should be? Thank you.

I love short scale guitars like Mustangs but really want a 22.5 fender. I love the looseness of the strings combined with thick string guages. Can this guitar be gigged as a main guitar ? Will it stay in tune and be a good enough design to be a main instrument. I couldn't care less how it looks and the fact it's a student model. My concern is it will hold played regularly live and not be a nightmare tuning wise. Do you think this guitar is too limited to be used exclusively in a band ? Are they adjustments to string guages or after market parts that once modded will hold up just as good as any guitar ? I never seen anyone gig one as there main guitar and use one regularly but you. I have a vintage Rickenbacker 325, Vintage Fender Mustang , and Vintage Gibson 3/4 melody maker. The short scale I absolutely fly on and enjoy the feel and sensitivity of bends. I really play better with short scales. But can this be setup to be a main exculsive guitar for regular playing and performances ? Also do you think it be better suited or less suited to slide playing. So close to buying one. Really need some advice before spending good money. Love your channel just subscribed
