- I started my RUclips channel one year ago today, a day I will always remember for more than one reason. In my first video I made a US flag out of pallet wood. So I decided for my one year RUclips anniversary to make another US flag but this time, see if I could make it out of a single 8 foot long 2x4. Thank you for watching.

Great video!! Saw the link on the rustic flag Facebook page!! I’ve made one and sprayed the stars. It turned out great. Second glad I had paint run off and it looked umm not so great. But practice should make perfect
Thank you. I usually get a little bleeding through from the paint. You probably already know this but you can touch up small runs fairly easily so you don't have to redo the whole thing. I show how in this video. ruclips.net/video/hEIAMElfMm4/видео.html
I hope that the other reasons were good. Really enjoy your videos and work, Thanks for letting us in your shop!
Thank you for watching.
Nice way of commemorating your first video and your anniversary on youtube. Also like that you posted it on this day, we should never forget what this day means to us as a country and as a nation of diverse cultures and ancestry, yet still Americans. Thanks bro.
Thanks bro.
congrats on your one year anniversary Dan. that flag was a great honor to watch you make and that flag or beef around a lot longer than a store-bought one.
Thank you Opa glad you enjoyed it.
Happy Anniversary great looking US Flag!
Thanks.
Great build Dan, congrats on your one year anniversary!
Thanks Shaun this year flew by.
DUDE! That turned out great. I've always wondered if that could be done and you've answered that for me 👍🏼😁🇺🇸
Thanks for watching and for the comment.
Nice job Dan, God bless ya.
Thank you.
Saw this video today and had to give it a try.
To keep it simple I just trimmed the sides and then cut the strips at 1/2. I had a 12 foot 2x4 at the back of the shop so had 4 sections instead of 2. Didn't make the flag yet but now have the strips cut for when I do.
Thanks for posting.
Good stuff man!! Good luck on your project!
God bless America you did a wonderful job on a worthy project Dan
Thanks Tom for the compliment and for watching.
A single 2x4 build sounds like a great annual challenge for the maker community! Nice job!
Thanks!
Beautiful work, Dan!
Thanks bro hope you are doing better.
How wonderful!
Thanks.
Looks great
Thank you!
This will make a great gift for an Independence Day celebration! Prolly gonna build one!
That would be cool. Thanks for watching.
This is very cool. Thanks. Beats the crap out of dumpster diving!
Thanks glad you liked it.
It a beautiful looking flag, and i hope to see you making many more
Thanks for the kind words bro.
Wow! Merida!!!! That's awesome
Thanks man.
Great video. Very surprising what one can create with just one or two simple 2x4 lumber "sticks".
Thank you and I agree 100%.
Beautiful work Dan!!! I love it!!!!!!!
Thanks brother.
I got chills watching...
Great way to maximize efficiency. 1 2x4! Great job.
Thank you!
Awesome man! So many stars to cut!
Thanks man, yeah I really need to figure out a better way to cut those out.
@@danthemakerman Two ways, 1 a home size CNC machine or one of those crafting machines, one is called Cricket I think. The CNC will carve the stars and the Cricket thing will cut out a template/stencil for you. I didn't come up with those ideas, someone else did, Im just copying.
good job man ,you got your money's worth out of that 2x4 !
LOL! Yeah I did, its a little thin about 1/4" - 3/8" but the support strips make it very sturdy. I'm very happy with how this came out I didn't think I could pull it off.
Very NICE!!!!!
Thanks!
Awesome my friend i love it bro :)
Thanks for watching TJ.
I always watch you videos bro
Happy Birthday !!
Thanks Renaud.
Good work.
Thank you.
Awesome job. Next year when you do it again use clear shelf paper to make the stencil. It will stick just as good for the painting and will come off in once piece easier. Plus its cheaper and you can buy it in 12" and 24" rolls.
Thanks for the tip!
You can actually get stencil blanks at hobby lobby for a few bucks.
Looks really good, very creative. I like that zero clearance insert on your "table saw", I have a similar one and my experience using it makes me feel entitled to use the quotes around table saw. I am going to try to do something similar to mine (saw is just so scary and inaccurate without one).
My 10-yo son just saw that you have one thumbs down on this video and said "someone must have done that by accident."
LOL, "table saw" is correct. Yeah its a little scary at times It makes everything rustic without even trying too. Thanks for watching.
That's awesome tell him I said thanks. The only thumbs down that counts is my own and I give this project a thumbs up!
"rustic" LOL, I always say it makes 95 degree right angles (or sometimes 85... and often on the same cut).
LOL! I'll have to remember that one.
God bless the United States of America!
Yes sir!!!!
What is the thickness of the slats. 1.5 by what and have you had any issues with warping being that the slats are so thin.
I can't remember the thickness but I would guess somewhere between 1/4-3/8 of an inch, just take your 2x4 and divide it in to 7 strips also take in to consideration the thickness of the table saw blade. I gave this flag away so I can't sayif there has been any warping, sorry.
Nice! Try using a blow torch for added rustic look
Thanks for the tip!
BOO-YAH!!!
Thanks.
That Yellow thing on your table saw does that help kick back? I got rid of my saw cause it was dangerous, but now would like one with no kick back
The Yellow thing is called a feather board it helps keep the board tight against the fence. Kick back is usually caused by the wood being cut binding between the saw blade and fence, there are a lot of factors that can cause kick back.
A tip for insanely sharp lines:
If you sprayed blue through the star stencil one more time. That then bleeds blue on to blue and seals small microscopic gaps. Then go back with white.
Just a trick I learned with painting and blue tape.
Thanks for the tip I appreciate it.
my problem is trying to find the measurements, can you show me where i could find those?
Listen to Johnny Cash song, raggedy old flag, says it all. Any, warping or imperfections in your flags just adds character to them. It will have symbolic meaning to those that get them. Especially, if they go to combat veterans, veterans, first responders, love ones of those in service. It also extends to those in struggles in this country. God bless all Americans.
Thanks for the great comment!
Nice vid but i think you have a chipmunk infestation lol
😄
That brings the price down to $3.50 per flag for just the wood!
LOL! All profit now!
Hey Dan love your work! Would you be able to tell me what spray paint you used for this project? I noticed you used two kinds for the white...? Thank you
Thanks! I use "Bright White" Krylon and "Almond" Krylon on the star. If you can't find "Almond" the "Ivory" works well too. For the Blue I use "Oxford Blue" and the red parts I use "Burgundy" all Krylon brand. Hope this helps let me know if you need anything else. Good luck on your project!
very cool, what were the final dimensions of this. Might see if my wood working friend can make me one.
Thanks the dimensions are 19.5 by 40 inches.
Looks awesome. What did you do to make the star template. I want to try this
Send me an email to danthemakerman@gmail.com and I will send you a template you can print out and use to make the stars.
All official US flag dimensions and layout are on the web.
Great video. Who makes the yellow guide and where can I find one?
Thanks. That's a feather board I bought at Harbor Freight.
I have recently started on this project. Is there any easier way to do the stars or can you tell me how you did them?
I can send you a template for the stars if you like. You will have to print it out and then mask off the blue area and cut out all the stars. You end up making a one time use template.
Okay
@@danthemakerman do you have a template for the stars on a website or something it can be downloaded from?
I'm working on one of these as well.
I don't have a website but you can send me an email to danthemakerman@gmail.com and I can send you the template. @@ronaldgardner3254
That's awesome how did you get the star layout?
I made it in Photoshop.
@@danthemakerman We are currently making a similar design, any chance we would get the stay layout you made?
@@SurelySpurge send me an email to danthemakerman@gmail.com and I'll send you the file.
Dan, Looks awesome can I ask what are your dimensions for this flag?
Thanks the dimensions are 19.5 by 40 inches.
Amazing! What is the size of the whole flag?
Thanks the dimensions are 19.5 by 40 inches.
Dios bendiga los Estados Unidos de América 🇺🇸....God Bless America!!
Thanks.
Looks great! What is that yellow jig on your table saw called? I need one. Or where did you get it?
Mike Bryant it’s called a feather board. I bought it Harbor Freight but you can make one too out of wood.
what are the dimensions of the stars?
Sorry for the late reply I just noticed your comment. I don't know the size off the top of my head if you would like a copy of the template I used just shoot me an email to danthemakerman@gmail.com
Dan The Maker Man
Can I get a copy of the stars template?
What colors did you use ?
All of them are Krylon brand. Oxford Blue, Burgundy, the white is a base coat of Bright White followed by a coat of Ivory or Almond the Almond is slightly darker but both look good.
I tried making a flag like yours. I ripped the stripes and put them aside for a few days. When I went back to assemble the flag, many of the pieces had bowed and warped. What did I do wrong and how can I prevent this from happening in the future?
I'm guessing the wood you used probably had a high moisture content. Pine is notorious for wood movement. Sometimes the wood at the home center is damp from being outside or even due to the humidity in your area. The higher the humidity the likelier the wood will warp on you. If you want to try this again you can buy the lumber and keep it in the garage for a week or two to let it dry out. If the area you live in is very humid you will probably still get some movement of the wood. You could use thicker strips of wood this might help minimize the warping. The drier the wood the better. Good luck hope this helps.
Thanks. Yes, It was pine from a home center. I will take your suggestion and let it dry before I rip the next one.
great looking flag! if you dont mind me asking, what are the overall dimensions?
Thanks, and sorry I already gave that flag away so I can't measure it. But it was something like 20 inches by 40 inches.
Thanks Dan! I watched it again and Its 19.5" x 40". My 5yr old daughter watched the video with me and wants to help make one. Any advice one the star template? that looks like the hardest part....lol
That sounds awesome. Send me an email to danthemakerman@gmail.com and I'll send a copy of the template I used. I think I still have it.
Dan The Maker Man, That would be awesome! Thanks again for all of your help, i really do appreciate it. I'll shoot you an email here shortly....thank you!
GAWD! I hate these videos that have sound but they refuse to narrate.
I don't narrate because it takes to much time, I have tried it in the past and it adds another 1-1/2 to 2 hours of editing and splicing and I have a terrible voice for narration. There are a lot of Uhmms and Uhhhs and mumbling so I don't do it, otherwise I would get people complaining that my narration sucks. If you don't like this video I suggest you avoid the rest of my videos because I don't do narration for any of them.
... talking instead of hand signals would help!
