I wanted to try something different and challenge myself and see if I could use cheap 2x4s from the home center and make a stunning piece of fine furniture. Even though I was pretty picky when selecting these 2x4s they still had their flaws. None were perfectly straight or flat, and even the best ones still had ugly knots to work around. I went into this woodworking project confident that this cabinet would come out pretty good but I had no idea it would come out as good as it did. I was blown away by the results and nobody in a million years would guess this cabinet was made from the cheapest wood you can get.

Damn, this dude's workshop is nicer than my actual living space. I'm seriously low-key jealous as hell.
It really is a nice shop. its so clean.
Yeah I was thinking that as well lol. He has a lot of nice tools too
The finger condom in the wallet was pure gold!! TOO FUNNY!!
Cutting an arc to make an arch feature was pure genius.
You might even say it’s “architectural”.
You wouldnt cut an arch from a rectangle would you? 🤦♂️
That's almost as brilliant as cutting a straight line to make a flat surface.
Holy crap we laughed so hard throughout this entire video. This is your best so far! Love your humor and of course “sand in the place where you live” cut short made us howl we love that so much. Thank you for making these videos we always yell out “David posted a video!” 🏆
🙃 thank you!
The editing is amazing on this and absolutely hilarious. The finger condom in the wallet was amazing and the car drive almost had me in tears. Great work guys.
I love that he has Groundhog Day on repeat in the background. Subtle and hilarious 😂
You do not talk too much. Your narration is what make your vids so damn interesting. There are others that talk too much but def not you. Keep it up and we’ll keep tuning in! Thanks for the vids.
That is really something. Taking the most basic of lumber and making art. Nicely done sir.
Got really excited when you talked about this video on the podcast. Seemed affordable as something for me and Ali to do. I gotta tell you, you DID NOT disappoint, sir! I know you've decided to not do more 2x4 into fine furniture projects and that's ok! I think this is going to be so inspiring for us to come up with our own projects! Great job and keep 'em coming!
As much as I've enjoyed previous episodes, how you continue to elevate your editing takes this episode to the next level. Great project and awesome storytelling!
Looks like you had a blast making that! Turned out great! I appreciate how experimental your projects are!
I love that you keep things fresh and fun! Keep doing you and thanks for sharing!
Speak your mind. It makes me.feel better cuz inalways feel like I should know what I am doing in the garage and rarely do I have a clue. It's nice to see other woodworkers talking to themselves and working stuff out!
So awesome! The design details really do a great job of hiding the "pine-iness" of the wood. Super cool piece.
Great content as always, I love the humour in your videos, laughed out loud when you got your wallet out😂
Actually the nicest peice of 2x4 furniture I have ever seen! Inspiring!
Terrific project David & you have just elevated my respect for 2x4's! Nice job! 👍👍🔨🔨👏👏
great looking project! Love the details
I love your videos. I love that you 'talk too much'. I don't like the videos where there's no talking. I always enjoy your banter. This is beautiful!
I love your videos. I have learned so much. I definitely use what I have and no you don't talk too much. Keep doing what you are doing and I thank you.
I heard about this project on your podcast and am blown away by how nice it looks!
Thank you for yet another highly entertaining video, David. I love your creativity and thought it was refreshing to see a RUclips creator make nice-looking furniture out of something other than walnut for a change. (Most of the things I make are pine, so I identified with this video quite a bit.)
Awesome video David!! Just wholesome, thank you for the effort that you put into these.
Thank you for another great video! I always enjoy your take on things.
As the viewer of these videos, I must say I love when I hear sanding noises and have a Pavlovian response anxiously anticipating R.E.M. to start playing. Well done, training complete.
Great Video! I love how groundhog day was just playing in the back. One of my favorites!😍
The finger rubber in the wallet had me dying!!! 😆 🤣 😂 😅
Talk all you want David. We're here for you and those complaining need to be ignored because they're d-bags.
Because someone doesn't agree with you they are d-bags? Everybody has their own taste and opinion and yours doesn't qualify as the final judgement. To each his own.
I LOOOOVE your delivery, David!!! Please don't change!
Sweet! Nicely done. I don't think you talk too much, normally I would; but you do a great job explaining your process and I love build videos. I started like many others, watching Norm and learning how to build a project, I love that you include your design process,. I lean toward your videos over any others I tend to skip around through. Keep on keepin' on!
I don't think you talk to much. I like hearing the thought process.... it helps me when I try to build stuff to have the knowledge of your process.
Love the way the top turned out. The humor in this video was quite pleasant as well.
I appreciate this vid. There are so many of us starting out and with the way things are now (financially in the US at least) we have to make do with what we can. And I’ve made some amazing (if I do say so myself) stuff with box store lumber and always feel a bit put down by some woodworkers comments on YT. I imagine you are doing this video coz you know most of us are struggling so I encourage you to do more if you see fit. Thank you.
From the UK this is as Alex said very appreciated 😊
While part of the gatekeepers are attempting to deter people from hurting themselves or others, I never understood the way some don’t share their knowledge for posterity. “Nice work dumdum” does not a carpenter make. Keep swingin champ.
He's also working with a fully equipped workshop - is anybody really surprised that he's able to make fine furniture out of 2x4's when he has all the tools necessary to mill those pieces down to perfect useability?
@@MichaelAlthauser you don’t need a fully equipped shop like his to achieve the same results. You can do the same with cheap tools, it will just take you longer.
@@lucyferina Having recently built a shelf out of 2x4s using cheap crappy tools, I beg to differ. I would argue that *at minimum* you need a table saw and a planer to accomplish an even halfway decent job(which btw I don't own, and yes, the shelf I built is shitty).
“Festool Biscuits” made me laugh.
by far - your absolute funniest video. loved it!
That was great…and really inspiring! I love your videos and always learn something new. Thanks for this cool idea!
David this turned out very unique and very cool. Keep up the great craftsmanship and hard work my friend. Keep making. God bless.
Great video sir! Very entertaining and informative. Turned out beautiful, love the top and doors
Such a nice project!! Thank you.
the finger cots in the wallet.....oh my gosh. This video is next level entertainment. From the words on the screen popping out to the jokes, to Bill Murray getting busy in the background. Very nice project too. Your shop seems like the kind of place I'd like to spend some time.....just how it's put together. Very happy place. Thanks David.
Really nice design. This accounts for seasonal wood movement in every component.
That is a legit good build. Impressed. Good design, and great video production as well
This little cabinet is beautiful and quite a creative design. You did use a tool that most of us don't have, but this project could be done with 'regular' power tools that are in most shops. The build would take longer, but it could be done. BTW: I love the cherry stain and the pentagons on the top. Thanks for the video.
Love making stuff from scraps and 2x4s. I also love watching your videos, sooooo....
I love the driving part of the video! When you first started it I was thinking “It would be really funny if he did other backgrounds too...” and then you did! Haha so awesome!
And the table ended up looking great!
This is your best video. Commenting in this one is perfection. Grandma!!
Wow, excellent film, even the commercial was entertaining! Super build, amazing results! Best use of 2x4 ever! Mahalo for sharing! : )
my grandmother approves!
Yeah she does.
I think I laughed most when you held your hand out to catch the panel then just let it drop. I always enjoy your videos for both the humor and learning new techniques. Love you, man!
This video was a double whammy. One , a great looking table and second, a sweet ride. Love how you are driving around with it in park. My father had a 67 Impala super sport back in the mid 70's. Red with black interior.
Table looks so nice. One of these days I'm going to have to try using epoxy.
Looking forward to seeing the next piece of furniture from the Jim Duggan line. Looks awesome.
**goes to the store to get a hacksaw**
In fairness I recently built a small nik nak box using cheap spruce wood and after sanding it completely flat and going through the sandpaper grits up to 400 I was left very impressed. The surface was smooth everywhere and felt like glass to the touch. When I applied danish oil it left me with a box that not only shimmers perfectly in the right light but almost reminds me of maple. I never realised how attractive spruce could actually be
Groundhog day was almost as hilarious as this vidoe. Great build.
Thanks for all you do
The finger condom pulled from the wallet. Classic! 😂😂
Probably the most funniest and most enjoyable woodworking video I've seen in a while 😂 well done on the project too
You are quite the guy!! I am 71 years old and have built a bazillion things out of 2x4's, some small, some big, but NONE of them looked like this cabinet. Well done, Sir.
Art from Ohio
PS; I used to have a 1968 Impala SS fastback - 327 365 hp - turbo 400 - floor shift w/console. I am sure you know it is the twin to your 67, only real difference is the tail lights.
My father used to make furniture from orange box wood 2 X 1 planed down ,it was in the 50s in UK not much material to be had ,no such thing as an electric drill etc he had a hand plane ,a hand saw,a hand drill and chisels. He would finish the furniture with French polishing and like you he could create fine furniture from nothing. Built a desk for my older sister that eventually became my pride and joy lasted 50yrs it was destroyed in an accident whilst moving ,broke my heart. Thank you for reminding me of the times I used to watch him work and wonder what he would have done with all your magnificent tools. His favourite joint was dovetailing.
This was great stuff. Finished product from beginning items was expertly done. That’s quite the mind
Amazing timing on this video! ... I just made a very nice stand for a Nord Piano5 out of fir 2x4's. At Lowes I found the 10' 2bys to be the cleanest needing very little picking through the pile to get just the right boards. I am very happy with my results. The piano stand cost about $25 in materials and about 6hrs of work.
Not only does he have a domino, but he also has a flying car! Come on David! Seriously great video.
Wow! That is gorgeous!
That looks friggin awesome, nice job.
The ultimate in woodworking entertainment.
I could only dream of having a shop and tools like yours. Holly molly!
For real right. The shop is so clean and free from dust.
Loved the humor as well as the build!😊
Great work as always man. You had me laughing on this one. My grandma was a lovely lady. She would adore you. Also, nice domino on pine wood work. I’m with you on this.
Awesome job y’all! Editing was great as well as the project. Hope I’m on this level one day lol.
This is definitely one of my favorites!
That is gorgeous!
I almost spit out my drink when I heard the dial up sound. Great project David!
😂😂😂 my favorite part was when you pulled the finger wrap from your wallet. Sorry if some don’t get the joke, but I did!
Love it! Keep it Up… I like the vids w expensive tools. I was surprised how nice that came out w just 2/4s….
Keep at it Dave! There are gatekeepers in every industry, fandom, etc….,and they all suck! We love what you do, and more importantly, you love what you do.
Wow David, that came out really great. Beautiful table.
Amazing video. The piece came out great.
Gorgeous piece!
"Festool biscuits" 🤣
It turned out great
The condom from the wallet had me crying 😂
Somehow I missed this video when it first came out. Just watched it and I have to say not only is the piece you made beautiful, but the “supply trip/square space ad” is the funniest thing I’ve seen in a while. The green screen had me rolling and “don’t make me turn this car around” was the absolute perfect way to end it. I’m still laughing. Way to go, David. You hit a home run with this one.
That must be the most beautiful workshop in the world.
Great project and edit!
Very nice. Love the humor so much.
Anyone else distracted by the couple making out on the tv behind David? 😂😂😂 love the content man keep it up
David, you are having fun again! I love when you talk to your brother off camera.
looked great dave!
That is the best square space ad yet. “Driving to the store.” Haha!
Fantastic build
Love the glue finger thing. Great job dude.
That shot of the finger cot rolled up with the jiz...er..glue leaking out kinda broke me 😂😂😂
Thank for this video ❤
Glue ups are always stressful for me, but on a project like this, I've learned that gluing up the sides separately connecting them with the front/back afterwards helps, double process but easier.
Awesome project!
10:39 NOT THE USED UP RUBBER WITH GLUE COMING OUT OF IT 🤣🤣🤣
It's been about a year or so since I've watched your videos, the shop looks amazing and you look like your having a blast!
Awesome build and looks amazing. As a woodworker who mostly works with construction lumber, it’s more skill and dedication to make fine pieces with all the added intricacies of SPF. Hope this is a start to many more projects on the low $$$ range.
Those grooves painted black are the bomb
That damn gluey finger rubber 😂😂 honestly great video.
David, I love this video! So much fun. This may have passed your old basement shop tour video for my favorite. I have to go back and rewatch that one to confirm. Keep up the great work! “Domino biscuits”, “your grandma’s a wh…”. The squarespace ad green-screen was so good. Loved It from beginning to end!
Thank you thank you!
That looks amazing. I made a Williams-Sonoma inspired bench out of 2x4s and glue for a friend of mine.. The William Sonoma site sold it for about $2000... It cost me about $25 in materials and I sold it to her for $70 (a freak-ton of sanding was required)
The Jointer & CNC are a Game Changer!!!
