Nice Design... Here's a few Important Tips... I have a lot of homemade outdoor furniture (hardwood by the way) and rain and sunlight are forces to be reckoned with. I would suggest after you complete filling ALL cracks, holes, etc along with your staining, etc to seal them with a solid two part polyurethane floor sealer and do it again and again and again... especially with soft wood. Then after several coats of sealer than switch and put on your Topcoat and again several coats. Otherwise your nice furniture will warp, separate and rot. Ask me how I know... yes, even hardwood takes a beating outside, so never allow ANY cracks or crevices that would allow ANY water to gain access or you will be crying the blues before long. That said... again Nice Design. I would suggest a waterproof glue as well like Titebond Three and the use of some hardwood dowels at key stress points. Stainless steel screws and brad nails would also be a major plus... jus' sayin... if you're building it to last. One final note... old fashioned Bondo makes a good filler and is easy to stain. If you do it right... you won't even notice it has been used. Thumbs Up on your video... Very Good Documentation and camera work in your steps... Subscribed... and God Bless You.
Thanks Kevin, This is some great advice. I have never thought of using bondo as a wood filler. Thanks again for all the great suggestions and God Bless.
Done plenty of chairs and tables here in Texas and in one summer your work is literally toast...spring rain gives way to many days over 100 and you better build solid. Ask me how I know. And then the squirrels...
How do you get Poly to bond over an oil based product like stain? I tried it over Danish oil and it was a disaster. I may have done it too soon maybe, not giving the oil long enough to cure??
@@Book-Gnome I not sure what poly you are using. I used Minwax Helmsman exterior varnish. Here is a link: Minwax Clear Varnish: creatoriq.cc/4bwq4Lz I hope this helps. thanks for watching.
I love how you got the ergonomics correct just using your intuition. Seats slanted back 10 degrees or so and the angle between the seat and back at about 100 degrees! They look beautiful too!
Ty for this great tutorial. Right now, I'm going to be starting to work on the patio paver but will need to make outside furniture afterwards. This helps.
They look great and best w/o the cushions. I would drive a screw or two through each seatback upright into the side support to give the seatback some extra strength. That way you're not relying on the "Kreg" screws and glue as the only fasteners preventing the chair and couch from being recliners.
Thanks NortheastKen! I really like the color combination too. I’m thinking about using cedar around the side of the deck and that same color combination. Thanks again for watching.
@@DIYGene Hey also I'm looking at your cushions. If you don't mind, were they from a local box store or an online thing. I have been looking for cushions for my outdoor swing. My cushions are 20x20 seat area and 20x20 on the back all one piece. Everything I see online will set me over $100 for 3. even if they were longer on the back it could work. Its 60" across. Looking at tossing the swing and making your bench, lol!
@@Northeastken I picked up the cushions from a store called Aldi. They were closing them out and I really only paid $5 each for them. In fact I bought the cushions before I built the furniture. I have a question, with all of the videos i have watched with people creating these beautiful patio furniture. What is the angle to make the chair seat and back at? and how much lean do I put on it to make it comfortable?

It lloks nice, but how do you rest your arm on the arm rest? They are way to narrow for mosy ppl. Also, the cedar will eventually turn brown unless it has been treated.
If you want a flatter or wider arm rest, you could easily add a cedar board on the tops of the sides. I have used Hellmans clear outdoor spar vanish for protection. We will see how well that holds up. Thanks for watching.
Just a suggestion but I would notch and inset the outer squares to the inside seat to take the load away from the screws. Right now all the load sitting is on the 4 screws.
