    Kudos for teaching your son to be self reliant!!! I am replacing both front struts on my 2009 RX350. I have seen other videos showing that you have to remove the axle nut, but you didn't remove it, so I am going to try your way. I have replaced both front axles in my RX350, and I really don't want to remove the axle nuts again if I don't have to as I am not using power tools. You make it look fairly easy, and I hope that my strut replacement goes as smoothly as yours did.

    I just finished the 2 front shocks and did a test drive. Nothing falling out yet...lol. mine is 2011 rx 350 with 67k miles and the old parts are still not leaking. I dont feel any different in the level of comfortability though 😢😮... I expected a lot before going in😂. Oh well. We'll finish the 2 in the back later... It took us more than 2 hours for the 2 in the front so you guys plan your day accordingly if you guys are rookies like us😅. There is a critical part where we need support for the disc brake part because it not that thing will be going down very far from the axel and you will not be able to put the shock in. I'm not sure that I was why the owner of the video jacked the car up that way. I did not Jack the car up like that. I just have the Jack in the front center. we used a small jack to support the area under the disc brake and that did the trick....

    Great video. You have a great young helper. Always nice to have a second set of hands. My daughter will probably help install her struts. My son changed out the front strut assembly on my 2012 Prius, while I had Covid. We had a heck of a time getting the bigger bolts loose on the bottom. And also we had to spread open the bracket that bolts to the wheel assembly. Its done. I will be using a lot of your tips when I change out our Lexus 450h. I sure wish the Prius had that little pop off cover to the front struts. The Prius you had to remove the whole wiper assembly. Thanks for sharing.

  • @vufirst
    @vufirst Год назад +2

    I finished the 2 back shocks and they were easier. Took me 45 - 50 mins for both. I found that putting the bottom connector first then get the screw ready before cutting the restrain wire to the strut then watch it expanding slowly and put the screw in as soon as it reaches the top hole level.

    I have an 2011 RX350 and decided this was so easy I would do it myself. Wow is me my one hour turned into 5 hours to do both front sides. No impact wrench so had to go with a pipe over my flex handle to loosen the bottom two bolts. When the strut was removed the wheel flopped way toward the front. The top 3 bolt bracket turns on the spindle so you don’t have to worry about making sure the bottom is in alignment with the wheel. That took 45 minutes to figure that out when installing the strut. The hub did not lift as nicely as his did to install the two bottom bolts. I had to use the jack to lower the car wheel on a jack stand to get the two bolts even close to the holes. Then I had to use a C clamp to squeeze the wheel bracket into the top hole on the lower strut. This all took 3 hours while I tried different procedures and tools to get it done. The right side came off much easier because I now had experience. I let it sit over night then my wife helped me install the right side. That took about an hour or more. But again new things cropped up that was different that the left side. The torsion bar (I think) did not go smoothly into the hole on the upper part of the shock. I had to lower the car onto a jack stand placed under the wheel hub to squeeze the suspension enough to align the bolt with the hole on both sides. It isn’t hard but it takes some patience and ingenuity to get it done. Saved myself $400 and i know it is done right. The video was great just a little over simplified. I am sure he has done the before.

    Torque specs? What the heck is a torque spec?
    Impact gun go brrrrr.
    Thanks for an overview of the process. I was looking for any weird quirks I should expect when replacing the front struts and took note that you used the impact wrench to tighten everything. You really should have used a torque wrench at the proper settings. It's the only way to know it's actually on tight enough to be secure without over-running and damaging the fasteners.
    Also to note: that rear shock should have been tightened with the suspension compressed to ride height. You're tightening on a bushing that needs to flex with the suspension as it goes up and down, but you've tightened it in the fully-extended position, which will strain it every time it compresses-and actually stress it while it just sits there under its own weight.
    All just stuff that will make your parts work better and last longer!

    The fastest way to ruin your ride comfort is to scrap your ORIGINAL coil springs. If your car loses the gas in the shocks (gradual process) eventually someday around 100k, dismount the strut and evaluate the top mount. Never let a torn rubber insulator (boot) expose the polished rod. Always replace the same parts on both sides.

It has always been widely suggested to Toyota/Lexus owners to NOT replace the struts until they are DRIPPING. Not just when they are damp. Of course, if the ride has degraded, they should be addressed. But he is also alluding to the concern that just because there's KYB branded aftermarket struts/springs, this does not mean they are made to Toyota's spec, even if KYB is the OEM.

      ive seen this sentiment quite a bit so i will respond by saying no..thats wrong. the shocks are made in japan just like the car. and after over 200,000 miles on the car and 20,000 mile on the new shocks the ride is 100% the same ... do not buy cheap Chinese junk !!

      I ordered all OEM Lexus Struts and Shocks from Bell Lexus..... right now, 3/17/2023, it's $530 delivered to my house. MSRP is $760. Labor is most likely 1.2 hours each front and 1 hour each rear, for about $750 total, combined with the MSRP you'd pay at the dealer for the parts, misc shop supplies, etc., you're looking at $1600-1700 at the dealer. I'm paying $530....

      there is no need to replace any of the springs... the front got replaced because it takes a special tool to take the front assembly apart without damaging the top bearing

    I have a 2012 Lexus RX 350 , looking at this video I purchased KYB from the link.
    Biggest mistake I ever made, waste of money. They don't ride the same at all like the OEM , this are garbage, don't waste your money, now I'm going to have to spend more money to get the OEM. ALSO I paid a mechanic because l change the control arms too
    Don't buy KYB is garbage, the ride is rough , stiff ,bad .
