  • In this video I compare two audio files. One which has been limited using the Hum Audio LAAL Look Ahead Analogue Limiter and the other using the FabFilter Pro L2. Analogue limiting VS digital limiting. What difference will we see and is there an audible difference.

    Thank you. This video inspired me to come up with a trick using Fab L2 to get punchy masters. I put a first instance of L2 to get the required loudness, set the ceiling to -2db true peak Off, then I put a transient designer as Spiff or Slate digital FG-X to add punch, then a second instance of L2 ceiling -1db true peak ON. The added transients live in the 1db pocket between the 2 ceilings and the second limiter is only there for safety to be sure we never distort. It's a 1 db loudness trade off for punchier master.

    some may find the visual waveform comparison irrelevant to what they're hearing, but knowing where the discrepancies occur upfront can help to more readily discern the differences. The discerning ear will eventually notice the difference over time. BTW, cool tooling on the waveform analysis. Care to share?

    The LAAL sounds so much more alive and organic, 3D.
    It's in a whole other league.

  •  4 месяца назад

    Absolutely spot on. Laal sounds way more “lively” and Pro-L sounds boring and lifeless in this comparison.
    However, I’m curious how much of average GR was happening on these because I wondered if LaaL “preserves better” or “adds something”. So I wanted to hear the original, non-limited source in comparison too (at the same LUFS.)
    Or you could show the GR screen.
    Anyways, I would love you to compare LAAL with Ozone 11 maximizer, or if you’ve done it please let me know what you’ve thought.

      I have lots of different limiters I can compare this with. I did all these tests when I had it in to demo. Was interesting hearing how much better it was than any plugin I compared to it. Hence why I made the choice to buy 2. I've had the LAAL for many months now. So, I will update a review with all your above comments included.

    I have the Bettermaker Darthlimiter. Do you guys still have it? Any comparison between? I don't limit too hard on it. It is more a blend with Limiter + Clipping and than clipping again on the Burl converter. So the job for the final limiting is ITB.

    I wish to see the setting of the L2 please.. I feel the TP is on for the L2, the release and attack time matters too. Also, the over-sampling needs to be considered, I use x2 most of the time because IMO it sounds more open, then reduce my output by -0.6. But before the limiter, I drive my mix buss into a very good clipper. All I am saying is, how the L2 is used matters in that dullness we just heard 👌

    I’ve been getting very tired listening to the L2 and instinct has been telling me something isn’t right. This highlights it, sterile and a little brash.
    Ok, so help us out, the LAAL is out of budget for now, can you think of a plug in that might get closer to the squishy feel of this unit???
    And also maybe a hardware unit under £5k m?

      Well the great thing is that soon the LAAL will be released on plugin alliance as a plugin. Even if it is 95% the same you will have a limiter that is top quality. Before the LAAL I would always say stay in the box. I honestly wouldn't say it's worth getting an out the box limiter unless you are buying something as good as the LAAL

    • @josephriddlestone4684

      Amazing, didn’t think of that. I have the Alpha as a plug-in and I use it as my mastering compressor. It seems to have the mojo of the real deal, although I’m sure it isn’t quite there. From why I’ve read it’s pretty much perfect, except the soft clipper. Have you used it? If so would love to know how it compares.
      I have the elysia 500 stuff, which I would use for mastering if I could get the signal to noise a bit better. Will stick to the alpha and look out for this until I can afford the real deal.
      This I think is the paradox of hardware now; The plug in versions of the elite £10k stuff is better than most of the stuff under £5k, although it’s nice to have the transformer glow and all that. Cheers again.

    • @AudioAnimalsStudio
      @AudioAnimalsStudio  Год назад

      @Joseph Riddlestone plugins aren't quite there and do sound miles apart when stacked in a mastering chain. Most plugins are 95% there which over 20 units stacks up to a night and day difference in mastering. If it didn't I'd save a lot of money and only have plugins for mastering. The alpha isn't close at all. The first I did when I got mine was test this and it's very much like the spl iron. One thing plugins haven't avhieve yet is compression and saturation emulation. A plugin is the equivalent to a 2k unit in my opinion. Above that you start to hear big differences plugins can't compete with. If you compare a spl iron at around 4k you'd hear what I mean.

      Wow thanks dude, I value the honesty and listening to just a couple of your audio files I trust your ears.
      I think the issue I have is, the hardware I’ve used has been old and badly maintained, besides the 500 series stuff I own myself. Maybe not a good comparison.
      It doesn’t help that you tube is full of people claiming the hardware and plugins are getting very close.
      I plan to get myself the SSL MBP+ and the Museq later this year, you reckon this would be better than using plug-ins then? And a decent mastering chain to get me going?
      Gonna try my next EP with you guys, do you do electronica and techno?

I will get mine next friday and I'm very curious how it will sound for heavy guitar style music like punk, rock and modern metal. One last question: Have you used the LAAL with signals that were processd with a digital clipper. I'm asking because in my current workflow I use a clipper before going into a Fabfilter L to keep the mix punchy. Your opinion would be great to hear.

      @Feliks Weber yes for certain songs we still have the Bettermaker Darthlimiter before the LAAL. It is entirely possible to do this. You may find you still want to use Fabfilter as well as the LAAL

    Have you had a chance to give an audition to the limiter in the RND MBC?

    • @AudioAnimalsStudio
      @AudioAnimalsStudio  Год назад +2

      Personally, I wouldn't. The MBP isn't a good compressor or limiter, in my opinion. It would be a very unfair test.

      @Entity same, it's a quality SFE but a very average compressor and limiter.

      @@AudioAnimalsStudio MBC limiter is a vast improvement to the MBP btw, especially with the HPF and release time improvements. I use it all the time. Its better than the Maselec MPL2 and Bettermaker ML. Particularly for loud Bass music like Dub as you can fine tune it. But its only good for 1/2 - 1.5dB gain reduction. That said the LAAL will smoke it. I have a LAAL incoming for that reason.

      I like the bettermaker limiter. V2 is a big improvement on V1. I own the darthlimiter which is great and a good improvement on V1. V2 has a few cool advamcemts. So I can tell you now as an owner of the darthlimiter it's brilliant and V2 is an improvement on that.

    The LAAL certainly has more "image"; its more in your face and spacious (depth) at the same time. Only took one listen on my average setup, i bet in person at your studio its amazingly drastic.

    It clearly sounds more dynamic and open on my ref monitors in comparison to FAB however isn't there a dif of like 8 grand or so, vs the plugin so ya hardware def wins this battle.
