      How is AT&T’s fake 5Ge faster?

    • @g00bermeister
      @g00bermeister 3 года назад +5

      AT&T 5GE is surprisingly quite a bit more than just advanced LTE and you would notice a deviation(200mbps vs 150mbps) in speed if the signal actually read LTE. It's a little bit different from LTE, and it's not low band 5G (which is actually intended to perform worse but have better coverage per tower). But it's something like LTE+++ And it does not work on most LTE only Android phones.
      This is why they call it 5G evolution because it's more advanced than their normal LTE but it's still not a 5G band. it was/is an evolutionary step towards 5G.

I think they are throttling all unlimited data plans but letting phones go wide open. But I'm happy with anything above 22 Mbps. So, what you’ve measured is the how complete are the connections feeding 5G transceivers - at least in the mm bandwidth. It doesn’t matter what the transceiver capability if the feed can’t fill it. Networks in the USA are doing 5G wrong. Here in the U.K. all of our networks decided to deploy midband first and the results I’ve seen are impressive and give massive uplift compared to 4G.
    Vodafone, O2 and EE regularly hit 500mbps compared to 50-250mbps on their 4G network.
    Three can hit 800mbps and there are reports of 1gbps or more on their mid band network compared to between 20-70mbps seen by there.
    All U.K. networks started with 3.4-3.8ghz, the issue is that US networks have started with 600mhz band which is going to give a false perception to US consumers that 5G is not an improvement on 4G.
    LTE-A is a very good tech compared to low band 5G especially if there is very little bandwidth being utilised on the 5G networks.

    • @DisturbiaTheGreyWolf
      @DisturbiaTheGreyWolf 3 года назад

      To add to this. O2/EE/Vodafone use 40-50mhz of 5G bandwidth and Three uses 100mhz as a channel width.

So the use case matters in deciding where to go. I also found that streaming (that is, feeding a stream, not consuming one) over 5G tends to be more consistent, FWIW.

      I’m honestly unsure. From Apple’s keynote presentation, it sounded like the iPhone 12 would only connect to 5G when it “needed it”, which I presume meant for downloading files, streaming music or video content, or other more data-intensive tasks. It’s unclear if the phone would be able to tell which connection would be faster, or just what technology it was connected to (5G or LTE). So yeah, I’m not sure, but I’d be curious myself to test this!

  • @NickBEADG

    This is why I switched to AT&T. They have barely any 5G, however their LTE is not only more available, but it's faster than any of the others on even 5G. It's the only company that will even work in the White Mountains where I travel a lot to.
    Also the fact you admit to doing your tests only near Verizon towers, makes this test bias, and yet AT&T still held it's own.

    Based on the speed tests being displayed on the video it sounds to me like there’s no real huge reason to rush out and buy the iPhone 12 if you want 5G coverage.
    This is not the first time I’ve seen these kind of results
    I think if I were to purchase the iPhone 12 pro myself, I would be tempted to turn off 5G and just give everyone a chance to build out their networks a little bit more

    • @StetsonDoggett
      @StetsonDoggett  3 года назад

      The good news is the iPhone 12 has a great LTE modem, too. I think I’ll probably end up leaving 5G turned off too, based on my results in my area. Performance does vary a lot from location to location though, so it may be worth running some of your own tests in your own location to see how the networks perform.

What I find is that every time I try to do something on 5g there is an initial lag of several seconds, sometimes up to a half a minute before data starts flowing at any reasonable speed. When using RUclips for example. Like there is some kind of check in process. Can be very frustrating.

I have T-Mobile and where I live in PA, my 5G speeds are pretty dang good I was constantly hitting between 115-150 mbps of download but my LTE is much slower just barely hitting 20mbps. So, while I appreciate all the hard work and it is very interesting information, there’s something kind of missing. Speed test and the word faster do not necessarily translate into the user experience. Example: the car has a top speed of 200 mph. Does that mean it accelerates 0 to 80 mph more quickly? Faster top speed, faster acceleration, faster off the line? There are many variables and considerations. What I wish you would also have done is to scroll through TikTok or Facebook or launch a high-resolution Netflix stream or RUclips or prime video. Build a new playlist in Spotify and jump from track to track. Maybe I’m the only one, but I don’t own my phone or subscribe to a particular network in order to run speed test. Messaging, media consumption, sharing videos that I just took of someone’s sports event, and other real-world things. Did LTE do all those things better or worse did 5G do them better or worse? Did anyone of the three companies consistently do those real world things better or worse? I don’t mean to be harsh, these are the real questions that I wish had answers.
