The contrasting voices really make this song whether alternating or sung together. Barry's is sad and soft sound about a lost love. Robin's is a powerful cry of anguish for someone lost to him forever..."a hole in my soul". You should listen to "I started a joke" live in Melbourne 1989 if you haven't done so. Robin was called by many critics and peers the best blue eyed soul voice of his generation. His vibrato was in inimitable and effortless. Another great Robin lead when still in his teens is "Black Diamond".

I have seen the music videos and had an equal appreciation of Barry's soft soothing voice then the contrast with Robin's more emotional soulful voice. I couldn't say which appealed to me more. Here Robin's voice seemed super charged with emotions .. magnificent 👏

What you said about the emotion Robin evokes when he sings is well known among the masses. He sounds like he is crying with heartbreak when he sings. He has always said that he sings from the heart. And he does a great job doing so with his incredible vibrato. I have yet to hear anyone, past and present, that has a vibrato like Robin's. As you are probably aware, the Bee Gees started their singing and song writing career in 1958 when they were young children. Their father had a band and was a drummer. Their mother was a dance hall singer. The boys ended up supporting their family with their music. I'm posting a link here for a performance they did in 1960 (the video title says it's from 1963, but I really think it's from 1960). I think this video gives good insight into how natural their talent was and how far they grew over the years. Hope you enjoy the video,.
