it's not that simple. Square-ENIX doesnt make good FF games, period. and the true fans of FF stopped buying FF games long ago during the great betrayal of seeing Squaresoft legacy being disrespected and disrespecting the original fanbase. no one buys them anymore. they've been boycotted
FF series was my first RPG as a kid on the NES but Xenoblade series has captured my interest even more. The classic FF games will always be in my heart.
@John-PaulHunt-wy7lf yes because tales series has far better action combat but its alright in its own right however I preferred 16 combat over 7 no contest but tales series is peak
@John-PaulHunt-wy7lf yes sales were affected octopath sold 3 mil in first month while final fantasy barely hits a million and building games are very popular so shouldn't be compared to an action rpg
I think the problem might mostly be related to cost + exclusive to PS5. A lot of inflation has occured between Remake and Rebirth. Plus this time the game is only available on one console. It's not as accesible as the previous entry
Actually i think the major issue here is just that the traditional home console has been on the decline in japan overall. They more gravitate towards consoles that can be played on the go, like a switch. Nintendo basically has a tight grip on sales in japan atm. Its one of the main reasons a 8 year dated piece of hardware can outsell something newer and more advanced consistently. I do think if square ported rebirth over to whatever switch 2 will be, that particular version should do much better, even if concessions in quality are made, by the very nature of mobile gamings status in japan alone, aka the switch effect
@@gizunoglunmig0801yeah but it launched on ps4 which A lot of people had. Now it’s simply ps5, plus games going up $10. To some that might be nothing but others, it might just be out the budget.
To me there are a lot of factors, for 1 the move to make FF7 into a 3 game series was going to hurt this no matter what. One you have people that didn't like the direction of remake, 2 you have people that won't want to jump into a 2nd game in the series. Additionally limiting the series to just 1 system at launch was going to hurt it as well, even if it meant spending longer. I can't help but wonder if they money sony dished out for the at least timed exclusivity is worth pushing the series into such a niche spot. I would love to see the next final fantasy dialed back in budget like think about FF8 to FF9 where they did a bit of a return to a more classic style. I think what they are doing with the series is just going to kill it in the long run without some serious changes.
I think SE needs to stop with their obsession with killing god. 13, 14, 15, and I’m going to guess 16’s expanded stories all told stories about killing god. It takes away from their original stories and I don’t expect anything else than (good) sephiroth or genesis to step out of a portal and talk to cloud about needing to kill god in the third game. It’s played out, and their writing on it was never anything better than just good.
@dribrom it comes down to wether the money Sony pays for it to be exclusive beats the extra money that they would have got from having the game on pc and xbox. I doubt it. It's ridiculous to me for a company to complain about sales when they took Sony's bankroll and made it for one console brand only.
I don't know about Japan or anyone else, but I want to get FFVII Rebirth, but it's hard to convince myself to get a $500 system when Sony themselves admitted that they don't have any big games coming this year
There are other high quality exclusive games Sony has on there. Well actually, if you have a PS4 you probably played a good bulk of them. They shot themselves in the foot by making most of their first party line up so far backwards compatible with PS4
Sony has no FIRST party games company out. THat doesn't mean the Ps5 doesn't have exclusives. Rise of Ronin, Stellar Blade are ALL Ps5 exclusives. Including Rebirth.
There aint no way the game would even be able to run on switch, we can't say for certain with what switch 2 is going to be doing. If they're going to be in a similar route but begin to leverage DLSS or FSR in some compacity then there might be a chance but the trade off is going to be very ugly as they'd likely be forced to use older renditions of that solution.
yeah the switch gas by him in the video, and by people in the comments, bouta have me never come back to this channel lmao, everyone here is huffing copium and im not gonna be apart of this lmao
Or, Hear me out, cut out some of the fluff they didn't necessarily need in this game. The point is they are putting way too many eggs into this basket.
@@madnessarcade7447 the funny thing is that people at Square-Enix tried to run Final Fantasy XV but the main problem was that the system was unable to run the Luminous Engine. That's why they just released the Pocket Edition, though I guess they already had it prepared I wonder if Square could have developed a sort of version of Final Fantasy VII Remake and Rebirth in the style of Dragon Quest XI's verion on the 3DS. I don't think it would've been feasible but I wonder if something like that would've worked

This is the reason why I prefer Dragon Quest over Final Fantasy. The series has evolved into modern hardware. But they keep the series as formulaic as they can. The gameplay never once shipped from an turn based-combat into an action rpg with hack & slash mixed into it and the story, characters & worlds is as simple and easy to follow as you can imagine, while also has the compelling & charming moments. Dragon Quest didn't suffered an whole lot like Final Fantasy is going through and even by the quote on quote " golden age " era of what FF use to be, I still think DQ does alot of things better than FF has because it doesn't add an whole lot of gimmicks mixed in to make it so breakable and an very easy game.
The loss of unit sales is unavoidable when you create three-part series. Every time you create a series that picks up from prequels, you’re inherently hoping that players who beat the previous installment will return for the second part. The ceiling is always going to be lower with each sequel. So far, they’re all good games; but I’m having a hard time seeing why a trilogy was necessary for a Remake. They’re dragging out each section beyond what it ever needed to be, adding a ton of expendable mini-games, and increasing the time investment in each region via intel missions. The original alone had plenty of content, they could have trimmed a lot of fat and sold one all-encompassing game, and maybe later come out with an expansion or a remastered version. Furthermore, the PS5 isn’t doing too well in Japan to begin with. Nintendo has dominated the local market. Not only that though, but then Yen is down fairly significantly compared to the USD, so while PS5s are still fairly expensive in the West, their price point in Japan makes buying a PS5 console an unjustifiable expense for most working young adults. Perhaps Sony’s local reputation has declined as well, and people won’t be keen to support a console manufacturer that just laid off 8% of its global workforce, despite record-selling games.
Considering how many fans were put off by the questionable plot changes in 1st part of the remake, you're absolutely right that there are gonna be less buyers for the 2nd and 3rd part.
Greed, also why the game is mostly mini game filler. Hours of game play 30 hours hours of mini game filler 50+ more hours of losing and learning piano. I won't pay in full for this trash again.
@DellikkilleD Do you know why the trilogy is considered a sequel? Cause to me, it seems like the entire story takes place in a parallel timeline to the OG one.
@@justdnce936 it's a sequel because it comes after the original story. As shown by the foreknowledge. Hence th3 name remake as th3y are remaking the story, changing the key events where they can. Although personally I believe the ultimate message for this trilogy is going to be 'when fighting fate, the most you can hope for are small wins' if you notice, dispite the differences, everything ultimately ends up about the same
Also probably would hurt sales a little bit was what happened at Best Buy where everybody is orders were canceled. I've also heard a lot of people are dealing with the issues from that on trying to get there deluxe edition because I believe some people are still waiting on money to be refunded and had to rebuild the game
Super Mario RPG sold 301,000 copies in Japan at Launch. We know they don’t mess with console games. Remake and Rebirth on the Switch 2 would sell insanely well.
Right. FF exclusive to Sony really isn't helping the franchise at all. the fact that rebirth wasn't able to sell as many PS5 hardware as Switch is very troubling.
Moneyhatting by Sony is not helping S-E nearly as much as they would have people believe. As was pointed out, PS is no longer the RPG destination platform, nor is FF the destination RPG any longer. S-E does need to rethink their plans to keep their games exclusive to PS.
That's part of the problem, in my opinion the other reason is that it's cool the way FF7 rebirth the way that it is now a action story driven jrpg, but a turn FF fan really wants a strategic turn based jrpg.
@@sveningvardentredje There WAS that article which implied it was forever exclusive, but that was since debunked, as the writer admitted he made a mistake. In fact I have a feeling they may end up bringing this trilogy to Switch 2.
@@Turnajon while porting FFVII Remake to the Switch's successor may be feasible if Nintendo's next console is at least as powerful as a PS4 Pro, I don't think it'll be able to run Rebirth, considering that it seems it has issues running on a base PS5, and Square-Enix's developers recently mentioned that the third game in the FFVII Remake project will probably have to be even more complex in order to implement things like traveling on the Highwind across the entire game world I could be wrong, but it's not like Nintendo needs FFVII, they haven't had a mainline FF game in their consoles since 1994 and since then they have filled the JRPG needs with their own games like Pokémon and Xenoblade
@@pablocasas5906 There is some truth to what you say, but to me it just doesn't feel right to for FF to not be on Switch's successor. We got the original 7, as well as 8-12 (minus 11 and 13, and 15), and I feel that there should at least be an option for it. So technically, the term that Nintendo hasn't had a mainline Final Fantasy since 1994 isn't really true anymore. The aforementioned games never were released on a Nintendo platform, so I think they count. The system also apparently is going to have DLSS. That may help tremendously. The fact that it's on UE4, which means its scalable, will help. Other option: it could be a Cloud port on the new system... provided it is an improvement over the original Switch. Either way, not losing hope on this.
Final fantasy 7 rebirth was the 2nd highest selling game for February, right after helldivers 2.... it came out on the last day of February. It's sales aren't bad. Those sale numbers are just physical copies and don't count any digital.
I blame two things about this, one splitting the game up into three parts, although I understand why they did this as putting an ungodly amount of money on one game is completely bonkers a lot of players were still disappointed in the story being broken up. 2. The new story with the alternate universe, blowing their load on Sephiroth and making certain spoiler story beats overly obvious or just revealing too much too quickly have really turned off alot of fans for the original game.
you forgot Covid-19 lockdown back in 2020 ???, everybody was at home that's what made FF7 Remake sell well, also all the people that grew up with FF7 don't like the change in the story... but to be fair for Final Fantasy 7 Rebirth, we yet to see the digital sales...
Digital sell is gonna be different in price sell. Since, most of us could nether buy it on physical or digital. Which, I bought Rebirth on digital, since GameStop no longer on Guam. So, I miss on owning the collection edition version, not can’t be asking my sister to get it for me.

Crazy to me that we are at a point when Zelda and now Pikmin are bigger than Final Fantasy in Japan. Super Mario RPG a game that was once developed under Square opened bigger as a remake. I expected less sales following Remake but not this low. The final game whenever that releases will probably look even more dire. Might open to a sub-200k. Square in general have been mismanaged and squandering opportunities since the Switch launched. They hitched their horses to Sony for so long and it's clearly running out of steam in Japan. The only way that I could see them reversing this decline is for them to be fully on board Switch 2. They can't just throw out Asano games, old ports, and call it a day.
I hope Square-Enix, and by that I mean the Final Fantasy developing side of the company, fully commits in supporting the Switch's successor. But I'm not really sure what could they do, the Switch has been the first Nintendo home console, due to being a hybrid, in which S-E gave it more support, but while games like Octopath Traveller I & II, Bravely Default II, NEO The World Ends with You and Live-A-Live's remake have been amazing, not all of them became huge best-sellers nor they look like they push the Switch's hardware to its limits I'm not sure if Square could make a sort of Final Fantasy gaiden, kind of what Capcom did with Monster Hunter: Rise. If the Switch's successor rumors are true about it being at least as powerful as a PS4 Pro, that means that it could run a game like FF XV or VII Remake, but I really doubt that S-E would bother to develop such an ambitious title for a Nintendo console
Cant say I'm surprised after how god awful the remake ending was. Bet a good chunk of the og fanbase will take a peek at some youtube playthrough, just to see how badly they ruined this one and keep their money. You know the people that trully loved this game since 1997 and were completelly betrayed by it's developers. Honestly it serves them right for absolutelly destroying a story that so many people loved and burying it underneath all this timeline/ worlds/ multiverse bs (so original...) People that finish this game have absolutelly no idea whats happening (new or old) and a vast majority will just not care. Just skip to some other game with a story that actually makes sense. If you're waiting for the 3rd game to make sense of any of this (lol) the explanation will be sephiroth talking jibberish, pretending he's saying things that make any sense like "The convergence of worlds and emotions will now begin" *cough cough* fanservice *cough cough* "Somehow palpatine has returned" *cough cough* Everyone lives happily ever after in the spiderverse. A story that at his core was about overcoming loss and moving on from it reduced to this... FF7 will now be remembered for being a completelly forgettable game. It never stops amazing me how people can ruin their own work so badly. But its common practice nowadays.
It's not rocket science. Final Fantasy games need to stop being timed exclusives for one console. It's literally a numbers game. They need at least a simultaneous release on PCs.
More and more people are buying gaming laptops for work, school or daily uses and don't see the need to buy a console anymore. Laptops are portable, doesn't take much space and has higher performance than consoles. The price is higher but you can do much more on it than just gaming. So it's more appealing. That's why i didn't buy a next gen console
It’s still a small number of people. I get what your saying and gaming laptops/PCs have gotten more popular but the average casual gamer still plays on consoles.
almost no one is doing that, gaming laptops are heavy as hell, noisy and they compromise on the battery side especially the low end to medium end which is what most students would settle for
Dude chill with that argument. Growing up I always wished ff7 was longer. And if you want the original experience so badly. Go play the original. I have had fun with the remake and having fun with rebirth
And here I was thinking that this game would do way better than 16... It is indeed a franchise problem, together with a bit of the platform problem too. I agree that they should make a separate FF turn based for the Switch, and do away with the Sony exclusivity, at least for now, until Sony can straighten its business at least. These 2 moves are what Square Enix needs to start restoring FF pedigree as a juggernaut of gaming.
I think it's a combination of things. Install base of hardware - Way more PS1/PS2/PS3/PS4 consoles than PS5. The cost of games - We may be seeing players pushing back against $60/70+ games. The economy - It may be that people are tight on funds due to the economy and can't afford to buy as many games. I do think Square Enix should deliver a FF7 Remake Trilogy to Nintendo Switch 2, for $50-$60 for the entire trilogy. It feels like Nintendo Switch gets the hand-me-downs from other consoles because of the difference in graphics quality, but I think that's a mistake in strategy. I think if Square Enix designed a FF9 Remake from the ground up for Nintendo Switch 2, with the same level of ambition as the FF7 Remake games but taking the Switch console limitations into consideration, that Square Enix would make bank. Then release it on PC and other consoles with a higher resolution mode or something.
I played ff7 as a teenager when it released in the 90s. I still game but on a PC not a console. I love ff7, and play it now and again on my PC and steam deck. The average ps5 owner is 35 years. They would have been 10 years old when ff7 was released and dare I say probably didn't play it unless they were into jrpg or hard-core gamers. The core audience for ff7 is late 30s and onwards imo. Generally speaking PC gamers not console gamers. All of that is to say if it released on PC it would have sold 2 million copies. By the time they get around to releasing it on PC alot of people would have forgotten it. Personally as an older gamer I love ff but don't do fanboyism. I may or may not bother to play ff7 remake in 12 months when it comes out on steam.
this^ exactly this. no fanboying over consoles, nor the franchise. youre just a smart consumer now, being a pc gamer. its SE fault for "punishing" you for not buying a console. but thats ok, we can wait, we got life, as we are 30 year olds
The mere fact a niche and extremely small series like Trials of Mana racked up a 1 million+ sales number goes to show that action based combat is accepted and welcomed, so it isn't like people are boycotting because of the high action based combat. I think it ultimately comes down to (a) the PS5 so far having smaller install base than ps4; and (b) players (newer?) who picked up the first Remake game and decided the game wasn't for them and passed on Rebirth. Either way, numbers will still pick up and still healthy nonethless. Nothing to be worried about. 7 is still the holy grail when it comes to Square and the FF series.
I think it has more to do with the decline sales of the PS5, because not only did rebirth not sell very well at launch. it also didn't move an hardware sells as the Switch outsold it. Not to mention most of Sony exclusive games are also coming to PC, so that could also factor into the lack of sales for PS5.
What you're failing to understand is that those who love Mana love it because it has ALWAYS been an action based game. Final Fantasy DRASTICALLY moved away from the base that purchsed MILLIONS of turned based games.
Personally, I want to see the next numbered FF entry be the classic turnbased ATB gameplay on Nintendo and with graphics at least as good as the crisiscore remake. That's what it would take to get me back into Final Fantasy. I was a long time fan since the beginning of the franchise, but I fell out of love with the series in the past 5 years because of the gameplay changes. Choosing to change the gameplay genre felt like a slap in the face to a long time fan like me, when they could have evolved the gameplay into a better turnbased style. I know they're capable of it. PS5 really stumbled on their launch, so in my case, I got a steamdeck and upgraded my pc instead of getting a ps5. At this point, I'm not about to buy a ps5 even if I wanted to play the next FF game no matter how good it is. If they finally make a new turnbased FF game and it's a PS exclusive, then I'm forced to wait for the PC release.
I cannot imagine a mainline Final Fantasy launching on a Nintendo system, and it not because there's still bad blood between Square and Nintendo, but it is due that Final Fantasy has become a visual and technological showcase and that's why Square favors the most powerful consoles. FF is not like Dragon Quest, a game series that always releases its titles on the most popular console in Japan, that's why Dragon Quest IX released on the DS, X on the Wii and why Enix decided to make two separate versions of XI, one for the PS4 and another for the 3DS Square could try to make a sort of Final Fantasy Gaiden game for the Switch or its successor, but very few Japanese third-party developers seem to open to the idea of making a big game for Nintendo, save for a few exceptions like CAPCOM's Monster Hunter: Rise from Capcom, Atlus' Shin Megami Tensei V and Platinum's Bayonetta 3. The closest thing to old-school Final Fantasy-like games made with the Switch's hardware in mind were Bravely Default and Octopath Traveller I & II
lol, my comment was about what it would take for me to get back into final fantasy. An essay about how you think FF won't come to nintendo changes none of that. Final Fantasy is declining and it won't grow while continuing to do what it's doing.@@pablocasas5906
I would NEVER recommend this or most any Square enix game to anyone, the minigames remove the flow of gameplay too much to make it a quality focused game. Nobody goes back to replay minigames unless they are not a real gamer. Square and disney deserve to lose money on the trash they sell
intermission FOR SURE. A lot of my friends who played it FF7Remake on PS4 got so mad about intermission being PS5 that they moved over to PC. They now refuse to buy a PS5 and are just waiting for PC releases.
This is what happens when you have a good classic and then ruined it for no reason , had they actually remade 7 and then added this new stuff as "what if" (optional) it would have been loved but they killed a loved story, and because of it they are hated by FF7 original fans, then they tried to make money grab phone game they also lied about , this is a simple lesson in give people what they want , supply the demand, not demand the supply, basically if I know what I want n I tell you don't say yes then , say no n try to tell me what I want , the only reason FF7 is failing is because they thought it was ok to remake it into a different story, instead of a real remake, if its not broken dont fix it, they dropped the ball n hopefully they fix this before they lose more money, by actually making the remake,
Bruh they are selling full price each part. People are getting tired of the milking or waking up that's all. Maybe they don't agree with the direction too. Wich are all very valid reason. Modern FF is not what it was. As a story guy, i'm very dissapointed by the recent FF too, it's all very mediocre.
Thats because this hasnt been final fantasy since 10. Most of the original people are gone, with only one or two left from the 1999-2002 era. And they are more obsessed with action games and cinematics. You can't change the genre of a long running franchise and expect it to go over well with people. Then they falsely claim they "evolved" the combat. No they didnt. They switched from classic turn based format to the same style of action RPG format that has been around since before secret of mana. And so every game after 10 has felt more like a spin off at best. Granted, they handled the characters in Rebirth perfectly. The voice actors really step up and nail it with phenomenal performances all around. But then the rest of it seems like a cross between Kingdom Hearts and the Witcher, with WAY too many mandatory mini-games on the side. People wanted a modern FF7. This included staying true to the original formula and gameplay style/genre. And now they see that just isnt going to happen. Yeah, there are fan boys and girls that will defend it no matter what. Hell, cloud could wield a turd and they would trip over each other to defend it. But you would think they would have course corrected after the first couple of action RPGs pretending to be final fantasy went belly up and were quickly forgotten in bargain bins. I used to think they would come around....Now I think, if your a traditional fan don't hold your breath. Hey, at least we have Atlus around, who dethroned Square Enix as unchallenged kings of TRUE traditional JRPGs. But thats because they went with vision, instead of consumer sales charts.
I agree with the mini games part. Rebirth has way too many distracting minigames. The main story quest feels disjointed because of it. I don't agree with the combat part though. Turn based combat is no longer what the majority of players want for a cinematic RPG experience. SE wanted to add realism and cinematography, which is why turn based combat had to go.

Its Kingdom hearts wearing Final Fantasy skin, right down to the interdimensional/Multiverse BS. If it WAS a true Final Fantasy, it wouldnt be doing so poorly and being outsold by two traditional games (Persona 3 reload and Unicorn Overlord). THOSE are masterpieces....Why? Because they were crafted with vision. Not consumer charts that make them change the whole genre and format based on what generally sells better. Square was better by itself, and so was Enix. When they merged, they went corporate, and when they go corporate, profits come first and so they sit around having analyst meetings about what is popular, rather than building the game with the Final Fantasy fans in mind. 13 through 16 should have been HUGE red flags that they were going in the wrong direction. If people want an action RPG, they will go to the Witcher, or Souls games, or any one of the dozens and dozens on the pile. Sakaguchi basically made the top tier in the traditional RPG selections, and sat high on the throne, and really stood out as the undisputed kings of this genre. But when they side stepped all their OG fans and went changed the genre to action, they werent "special" anymore, but just another one on a very big heap. As a traditional JRPG there was no one who could even come close to challenging them. As an action franchise, they are just one of an oversaturated market of action titles. And its not like they couldn't have spruced up traditional gameplay. Atlus did it with the Persona series after all. And that game became a global phenomena. Even people who LIKE action games but are OG FF fans will feel "off" playing this or remake, even if they don't realize whats bugging them. And what is bugging them, consciously or unconsciously, is that this is NOT "FInal Fantasy" as they remembered and loved for decades. That is why they are failing.

If the sales dosen’t improve, maybe it’s for the better to give FF7 Rebirth the “Xenoblade” treatment, but with a continuation instead of a prequel. Release a big expansion on the current game with focus on wrapping up the story, if a trilogy was the OG idea to begin with. At least a closure is better than a potential forever-cliffhanger.
How does this compare to FF X-2’s drop off from X? I ask, because even though this is its own game, many perceive this as an extension of Remake. Not a DLC per say, but I’d imagine only those who played Remake bought this, so it makes sense it will have smaller sales. It is unfair to compare this to another mainline FF game.

You make good points but I think you are severely underestimating the impact of exclusivity and PC. The gaming market isn't the same as it was PS1/2 era. PC is way more important now. Square needs to do like Capcom. After seeing how well their major titles sell on PC when they are ported AT LAUNCH and not years later, they shifted focus to PC being their primary platform. What you say about switch makes sense too but for massive games like this Capcom doesn't release on switch either ... its PC and even XBOX. Sony bribe money isn't worth Square destroying their most important franchise.
square isnt doing it exclusive on ps5 for no reason. they got paid to do so. also, the number is for physical copies only. which is misleading, as japan is transitioning more and more into a digital market more and more.

Switching to the Nintendo Switch solves many problems. While some may argue that the Switch couldn't handle certain games, developers who prioritize the Switch first ensure that their games are optimized for its hardware, as seen with Nintendo's IPs and games like Fortnite running smoothly on the Unreal Engine. In contrast, Xbox seems to have shifted focus away from consoles towards business, following Microsoft's typical approach. Sony, under Jim Ryan, appears to be heading in a similar direction, which could impact the industry. However, I believe Nintendo will continue to thrive as a console, unlike its competitors. Final Fantasy remains a quintessential console game, and the Nintendo Switch stands out as the best console option currently available, unlike what I perceive as advertisement-heavy alternatives like the Xbox and PlayStation. Personally, I find it frustrating to spend over 500€ on a console only to be bombarded with ads and have physical media that serves merely as a key for downloads. I prefer sticking with Nintendo and eagerly await titles like FFXVI and FFVIIR coming to the Switch eventually. Looking ahead, I predict Valve's Steamdeck and Steammachines could emerge as significant competitors to Nintendo. While the PS4 was impressive, Final Fantasy XV even convinced me to invest in a PS4 Pro for the best gaming experience. In my view, the Xbox Series and PS5 feel more like ad-driven devices requiring extensive downloads before gameplay, unlike the simpler experience of older consoles like the PS1 or PS2. The Nintendo Switch, on the other hand, retains that straightforward gaming charm.
They killed the momentum for FF7 trilogy the moment they announced that its going to be exclusive to Sony. FF7 Remake and Rebirth on Switch 2 might actually do decent number but I bet that Square is going to be more cautious of exclusivity in the future the next time.
@@raikenninja4843remake can run on a switch 2 but definitely not rebirth not a chance. Theres way too many hurdles to jump over. 1: filesize. The game is 150gb on ps5. How the hell are they going to compress that into a 30gb cartridge? 2: world size: not only would it need a gpu powerful enough to handle these environments, it would also need an extremely fast ssd to be able to load these quickly and traverse in real time 3: graphics. This is the easiest thing to deal with since they can just make them more low poly, but 1 and 2 are going to be the biggest hurdles. What I’m saying is, if the switch two is rumoured to be ps4 pro level, mainline ff isn’t coming to it at all. It can’t handle it
@@jamrah8713 Probably can still happen but just my opinion as PC Gamer. 1. File on Switch is always low, Nier for example is 11gb for Switch but 40gb on PC, don't know about PS though 2. One of the biggest strength of supposed Switch 2 is DLSS upscaling, DLSS 2.0 performance can render at 720p and upscaled to 1440. So they can make it work for lower end Switch 2 GPU. DLSS is far more efficient than current FSR which is why Microsoft and Sony is working on their own upscaling technology. 3. Samsung is also working on a new SD format called SD Express that have like 800mbps transfer speed so they have ssd like speed although won't outperform PS5 SSD. IMO it can still probably work if they give it a time to optimized it. That just entirely depend on Square though.
Japan is Nintendoland and if they keep doing this when Switch 2 comes around then its RIP Final Fantasy. No real loss for us primary Nintendo audiences as we have the incredible Monolith Soft whom I'm sure are cooking up something real special for Switch 2 or whatever its called :-)
Up to Nintendo. You really believe FromSoft, Capcom and Sega don't want to put Elden Ring, Dragon's Dogma 2, Yakuza Infinite Wealth, and Persona 3 Reload on Switch? They can't. For the same reason Square Enix can't put Rebirth there, the console is a toaster by this point. Tell them to get off their asses an release Switch 2, and I'm pretty sure you'll start seeing the ports coming.
I agree, Monolith is the way to go now. ...As long as whatever comes up next stays stylized and anime like previous Xenoblades. If they go realistic style like Final Fantasy has, then they're just as dead to me.
@@mappybc6097 I think Nintendo has probably tons of games currently in development for the Switch's successor, I can imagine the system launching with a new Mario Kart or Mario platformer, perhaps with Metroid Primer 4 as a cross-gen title. The thing with Nintendo is that they have become to good at developing their own game that already cover many of the genres that are typicically done by third-parties on their competitor's systems, so they don't have to worry about games like Persona or Final Fantasy not coming to their consoles since they have sort of equivalents with their own franchises like Fire Emblem or Xenoblade, even if they do not sell as much, as long as they fill those genres If the rumors about the Switch's successor being at least as powerful as a PS4 Pro/Xbox One I can see some late ports of games such as Capcom's Resident Evil VII, VIII, R2, R3 and R4, Atlus' Persona 3R and Metaphor: RePhantazio, Namco's Tekken 8 maybe, SNK's King of Fighters XV and Fatal Fury: City of the Wolves, ArcSys' Guilty Gear: Strive, From Software's Elden Ring, etc.
@@solidsnivy5639 The issue is that the high graphical fidelity style that FF has been using is simply too costly an investment given how poorly the titles have been selling.
@@solidsnivy5639 Nothing is objectively wrong with a realistic art style at all. It's all a matter of personal taste and nothing more. With that said though, my personal taste doesn't want highly realistic art direction at all. I already get enough of realistic people from real life, I don't need or want more of that from video games. (Or any other creative medium for that matter.) It seems a waste to me to make virtual characters from scratch that could be anything and just make more of the boring ol' realism that we already have. Plus, it's not like we don't already have plenty of realistic games as is anyway, games are collectively getting more and more realistic every day. Especially when it comes to the games with any real budget behind them. If Monolith goes realistic too, then there's one less quality developer making stylized games in an industry that already has too few options in that particular space.
The remake was very disappointing. I’m guessing people wised up and skipped Rebirth since they knew the direction they were going in. I know I skipped it for that reason.
Square Enix needs to spend less time developing, and that means scaling down the games to something more reasonable. 3 games for a lesser version of a story that was perfectly told in a single game 27 years ago? They also need to drop the Sony exclusivity deals, I'm sure they're being a large amount up front but I doubt it translates in more money they would get by releasing for Nintendo and PC at the same time! And of course, drop the Ethics Department, stop hiring consultant firms like Sweet Baby Inc, and ignore ESG scores!
Yes, but I think most Japanese developers don't take the Switch as a serious console to develop games for. The only major third-party Japanese games that released on Switch that managed to become huge or at least great sellers since the console launched were Monster Hunter: Rise, Momotaro Dentetsu, Shin Megami Tensei V and Bayonetta 3. Some developers admitted that they didn't think they Switch would've become that successful in Japan, and they have struggled to cultivate and audience on the system. That's why the major third-party releases have been late ports like NieR Automata, Persona 5 Royal or Ace Combat 7, while other games like Guilty Gear Strive, Persona 3 Reload or King of Fighters XV skipped the Switch. Though to be fair, one of the main issues with the Switch is its underpowered hardware, but very few developers have tried to make games that are tailored to its limitations In the case of Square-Enix, it's kind of unbelievable that they used to remake games like Final Fantasy III and IV in 3D for the DS, but haven't tried to make an original FF for the Switch. The closest thing we got were games like Bravely Default II and Octopath Traveller I & II, and while they looked great, I can't believe why they haven't tried to make something bigger like a full-fledge Final Fantast spin-off in the style of the PSOne games or FFX but for the Switch's hardware. In part I think it's due to budget and development issues and perhaps they don't think there's an audience for that type of game on the Switch, but there's not going to be an audience if you don't try to cultivate one I don't think things are going to change even if the Switch 2 manages to be significantly more powerful, there's always going to be some sort of excuse
@@pablocasas5906 Yeah, it’s sad to see that SE used to make games tailored to a weaker hardware like the DS and 3DS, yet, still make them look great and play great! However, Capcom is way worst in this regards as they made so, so many great and unique games since the GBA era, many which has turned into a big and beloved franchise like Ace Attorney for example. Capcom used to be very experimental and tried out loads of new ideas, especially on the portable titles, and a lot of those games look absolutely amazing, despite the console’s limitation like RE: Revelations (which I still think is the best version because of the 3D effect XD). But these days, it’s either AAA games for the most powerful hardware or just ports for the weaker ones. Just look at how they made a friggin’ SF4 as a launch title for the 3DS with its own unique gameplay features and some neat bonuses like the special camera angle mode that makes the 3D effect more immersive. Then what do we have for the Switch at launch, another SF2 for the hundredth time in order to “test out the waters”, a reason that they continued to use when it comes to making a game for the Switch for years to come. At the end, I think MH Rise was the only one game that Capcom made anew for the console, while the rest all all ports (correct me if I’m wrong). I know that the failure of the Wii U affected a lot of developers’ decision to pitch in on the Switch, but Capcom has been making games for Nintendo all this time and gave birth to so many legendary games on the Nintendo consoles, so it’s sad to see them quick to abandon Nintendo in the times of need, and even when the Switch has proven to be successful, they’re still reluctant to come back and instead plays it safe by pouring tons of ports instead.
@@pablocasas5906 Switch biggest problem in term of third party support is getting AAA games, seem like AA is less of a problem with developer like Omega Force, Gust, Furyu and now Nihon Falcom and Idea Factory giving it a lot of support. But I agree that Square is probably shooting themself on the foot not cultivating an audience on the Switch for the next Switch 2, they probably expect Switch 2 audience to come to buy their game and will have a harsh reality when sales don't reflect that. We have seen with sales difference with Atelier Ryza 3 and YS X where Ryza 3 have a 50:50 Switch PS split and YS X only having 15k which does save it from sales decline suffered by Falcom. Gust have cultivate the audience for the Switch for the last 5 years and it showed massively.
It's not unexpected. It did sell well, topping charts, but much less than Remake. There's a lot of reasons for this. Remake sold near the tail end of the PS4 release cycle. there's far fewer PS5 customers. Direct sequels almost never sell as well as the games they're following. Remake's Whispers plotline, and timeline shenanigans, split the fan base, so there's even fewer players who will come back for the second one. And Remake also sold during the pandemic, which saw more games being sold in general. The folks at Square Enix are smart cookies. I'm sure they expected a drop in sales compared to Remake, but they're still making plenty of money. The lesson to be learned here is probably "Develop for cross platform if you want better sales" as well as "don't divide the fan base with controversial plot handling" and lastly "be wary of splitting plots across multiple games, due to the nature of sequels and how they tend to sell less than the games they follow."
I really want SE to make a turn-based Final Fantasy with XVII. I think it would be a great change in terms of variety after Remake trilogy, XV and XVI all being action. I love Rebirth's and XVI's combat but I don't necessarily want to see another game with these types of gameplay. A multiplatform + turn-based + heavily stylized mainline Final Fantasy game would be great.
you do know, they put them on sony first due to the money sony pays up, right? its also cheaper to make and optimize a game for a single console first. finally, they took less than 4 years to make rebirth, which means, it also cost ALOT LESS to make than remake. maybe even less than xvi. finally japanese sales are no real indicators, since japan is a weird market for games, due to both an economy in shambles, but also their focus on digital only/portable devices. these sales figures are just for physical sales. they dont account for the real number. specially, as i said before, the market is moving to digital sales more and more. which results in less "traditional copies" being sold as a result. the ps5 also has a digital only model that is cheaper and slightly smaller. those are 2 aspects that the japanese market is looking more interested in.
@@marcosdheleno but games like Elden Ring, Monster Hunter World and the current Resident Evil games managed to sell millions of units by being multiplatform titles

@@marcosdhelenothen what about Japanese games like Elden ring? Monster hunter? Or evenTekken 8 and tales of arise? All of them were multiplatform and they sell pretty well? Any explanation for that? Yes it did only take them 4 years but you do realize that most of the assets were recycled from the first part? There's no excuse Square Enix couldn't make the game multiplatform. You're just being a fanboy atm defending your precious console
this is not a knock on unicorn overlord, looks a really great game, but it'll be hilarious if it sold more than ff7 rebirth, which is a much more known IP..Lol
Even if it comes anywhere near this number, it just shows that they’re not catering to their market and they should have something cooking down the line or Nintendo’s successor hardware.
Bravery default is by far still the best turn based system yes I have played smt noct and smt 5 and persona 3 but they don't stack up like bravery default hopefully they remaster them also xenoblade chronicles series is amazing as well my opinion hopefully I ain't alone with wanting remasters for bravery default
Well deserved fall. First, they sell only to ps. That slashes their potential customer base. Second, they divided a single rpg story into 3 parts that span years. Not many people want to pick up a game that they know wont be finished until a few years later. Third, the loss of some of the hardcore fans of the original story, like me, because of their dumb changes and added timelines, further slashes their already small customer base. They were obviously asking to fail.
In my humble opinion, the reason for this decline might be multifactorial in nature. I mean, I don't wanna preempt anything because it is still a bit early to judge since we haven't got the figures for from digital and from outside Japan. But if this continues, I think it is because there is a shift in playerbase, I suppose. I mean it's not a secret that there are dissatisfied hardcore fans who wants to maintain FF as a turn-based JRPG. I myself am a little bit 50/50 in this shift ever since they made that jump to action RPG like FFXV. Nevertheless, I still like those. Also, despite the aggressive marketing, if these are the figures across the board, including those from outside Japan, then Square should rethink about what FF should be in the future like will they continue the action game route or switch back to turn-based RPGs...well either will be a tough decision. I think Square should also open up to the idea to launch games on different consoles on launch and not just on one platform. In any case, I hope Square can still bounce back since despite being more action-oriented, FF is still a top-tier caliber game series.
Final Fantasy should be more cross platform; and I know the resent ones are too advanced to run on Switch; though hopefully the next gen Nintendo console could change that. But if the new IPs want to continue being a success, there should be future Final Fantasy games on there.
Don't think Nintendo's next console will be able to run Rebirth, at most it'd be able to somewhat run Remake, or just like what happened with the Kingdom Hearts games Square-Enix will just make some cloud (no pun intended) versions of both Remake and Rebirth S-E could have tried to build an audience for FF games on Nintendo consoles, but their only efforts have been late ports of old FF games, the Pixel Remasters and a bunch of spin-offs like the Crisis Core and Crystal Chronicles remasters and the panned Chocobo GP game I really doubt S-E considered making a FF game tailored to the Switch's hardware limitations. The closest thing we got were some tiltes inspired on the classic FF games, I'm talking about Octopath Traveller I & II and Bravely Default II which, while good games on their own right, somehow feel like S-E is unsure or doesn't want to devalue the FF brand name by developing an original FF game for an underpowered console like the Switch
@@pablocasas5906 There have been reports that next gen console may use the chip that enables 120 fps and run Unreal Engine 5 level games. But we won't know till it announces later this year and likely releases about a year from now.
@blackraven85_1 no it's not 11 and 14 still bring in plenty with 14 being the largest mmo in the world all that happened was that 15 and 16 hurt the series a little effecting trust of the players but 9 was hithard early on because of 8 then on top of that most don't have a ps5 and having to buy one on top of a $70 game isn't going to happen for them
we are in a digital era right now counting physical sales and trying to make people think that represents the sale as a whole is stupid af wait for the actual sales numbers that count digital sales
@fantasprite612 pretty much especially when most of the Xbox and Playstation models coming out are purely digital and most stores are getting ready to do away with physical games all together
Inflation/covid screwed everything up. This generation had a slow start. The Switch is cheaper, portable, and has a larger library since it’s been around for so long and it’s portable. Also rebirth is a sequel remake. Long term wise it will do well. I have a feeling the FF remake games will release on the new Nintendo.
I am hoping that to some extent this is more a sign of how much digital sales are taking over the market, because it is really hard for me to imagine that Final Fantasy 7 didn't sell well, but I guess we will see. A little upsetting either way.
I think people have speculated that the digital market, at least in Japan, only amounts to a 30% or 50% split compared to the physical market. Not to mention that Japan is still a country which favors physical media over digital. In fact, the PS5 disc version has sold over 4,613,083 units in Japan, while the digital-only version has sold only 732,266 units in the same country.
Ff7 remake was hyped for years and it released during Covid lockdown. People are reading way too much into the sale numbers of rebirth and it’s only been out for a week or so
Square-Enix first reported that Final Fantasy VII Remake shipments and digital sales topped over 3.5 million just 3 days after its release and that was, as you said, during the Coivd lockdown which actually affected various reports. It's been over a week after Rebirth's release and we haven't seen any sales news from S-E And just for comparison, Square-Enix's last sales update given on September, 14th of last confirmed that FFVII Remake sold over 7 million shipped and digital copies. On the other hand, Nintendo confirmed Zelda: Tears of the Kingdom sold over 10 million units in its first three days, and in their lastest financial report from February 6th, TotK has sold over 20 million copies
I was 17 when the original released. It was my first turn RPG and turn based game. When I see this fast past DMC style combat just turns me off from the new versions. Guess I'm just old now.
I plan on getting it, but there is to much to play right now. HDivers and P3 Reload are still being chipped away at. I’m not the only one with this backlog issue.
To be fair, the only clear sales numbers for FFVII Rebirth that we have are from Japan, where the Xbox Series X|S has only sold over 561.142 units, which aren't nowhere close to the PS5's 5.345.349 or the Switch's 32.281.255. I don't think an Xbox version would have done a lot to improve those numbers. However, an Xbox version would have done a lot for international sales, I think Square-Enix is sacrificing a lot of potential sales by not making FFVII Rebirth a multiplatform title
@@pablocasas5906 oh yeah for sure. In Japan it wouldn't do much of anything but internationally it would really help. I can't understand why Square Enix would limit their potential audience and sales.

dude, no way in hell it would run on the switch. they would literaly need to make a completely new engine just to run there. and hell, even nintendo cant make games that run well enough on the switch to begin with. let alone other companies. when the switch 2 release, it will probably get a version there. but og switch? unless we talking streaming mode only. which is atrocious at best.
I'm not sure I fully agree. 4K FF7 for Square Enix and most gamer's standpoint would be a automated success story. Other than being split from Midgar, Action combat and the story changes, this should've been a slam dunk on paper. The performance issues, story changes and outcry against action combat probably didn't help but a lot of people probably don't have the money to swing the PS5 adaption and might be waiting for a PC release. The other thing that I will agree with is that the general quality of FF has taken a lot of hits these past years so getting that good name back is a challenge. Also this is a sequel to a game with a lot of backstory that didn't make itself the most accessible being a remake that was also technically a sequel. At least I am but I'm kinda more curious to see how the US fares since Square Enix and a lot of Japanese studios are aiming for Western Market Money. Especially
I wouldn't have too much of a sale push globally. It seems like it's repeating the 13 trilogy with each one selling less than the predecessor. Capcom actually understands their fans and put their big games on xbox, ps5, and pc. Unlike Square Enix, which would rather take a sale loss and put there big games on one console and pc. Last big selling Final Fantasy 15 selling almost 15 million on xbox, ps4, and pc combined. Xbox might have had 20 to 30% of those sales, but it did sell on xbox like 13 did. Maybe the new boss at Square will correct the ship.
Final Fantasy hasn’t been a system seller for a while, personally imo FF9 was the last great Final Fantasy. I’m much more likely to buy a new system for a new Dragon Quest at this point.
OJ makes an interesting argument, as it pertains to the broader FF brand as a whole. The FF7 re-trilogy never was going to be on (the current) Switch. And will take a long time, if ever, to go to other platforms. So why not develop an additional (new, compelling) game, to engage fans on Switch (and other) platforms? All that said - there are multiple factors at play here. Action-based combat, pS exclusivity, redoing the original story and splitting into three releases (across several years)…. Even digital sales. Single-factor analysis can show us only part of the story.
I find it very interesting that Square-Enix hasn't tried to cultivate an audience for Final Fantasy games on the Switch. I mean, they did eventually ported most of their back catalogue in the form of ports of games like VII, VIII IX, X and X-2, XII and the Pixel Remasters from I-VI, with the XIII Trilogy and and XV being absent, but that's because the Switch probably can't run those games (though I've heard S-E tried too port XV but the Switch was unable to handle the Luminous Engine so they just ported the Pocket Edition) and they also released Crisis Core on the Switch. But in the end they're very old ports and remasters, and while it's nice that various Nintendo players are not able to experience those games, Square-Enix seems to be very opposed to the idea of making an orginal FF game for the system or even a spin-off, which is weird since the DS got a remake of III and IV made in 3D and also The 4 Heroes of Life on the same system. The closest thing to a Final Fantasy game tailored to the Nintendo Switch are Bravely Default II and the Octopath Traveller games, but it sometimes feel like S-E, and other Japanese developers, are afraid of bringing some of their biggest franchises on the Switch due to some sort of loyalty to Sony or perhaps they don't want to dilute the brand's name by making a game for and underpowered console I could also argue that Square-Enix also didn't bring as many Dragon Quest games to the Switch compared to the titles released on the DS and 3DS, instead making some spin-off titles a major late port and porting the mobile versions of Dragon Quest I to III (I know there's a DQIII HD-2D remake on the works but we haven't heard much about it since its announcement). And how could we forget that Kingdom Hearts I, II and 3D got released as Cloud games alongside III (I know that KH III can't not run at all on the Switch but I'm sure the other 3 games could
@@pablocasas5906 Great points Pablo. I think part of the issue is that Square Enix can only do so much at one time. Stated another way, the “opportunity cost” of doing interesting new games like Triangle Strategy, the Octopath games and the Bravely games might mean less (or no) resources available for a Final Fantasy “gaiden” if you will. I think another factor is the tendency of some developers to pursue their vision at all costs - sometimes even at the cost of market viability. From what I heard, the first 2 games in the new FF7 trilogy really are something special. But it can be a hard sell, locked to a single platform, rewriting the original narrative, moving to real-time combat….. and spacing the releases over so many years. It’s just a lot to ask of your audience, especially when there are many other gaming options available.
In all fairness, those games were always timed exclusives. True, an Xbox port has yet to appear, but I did hear that there were rumors of it potentially coming (but take it with a grain of salt).
I know a lot of people are doom posting right now but I’m just enjoying the game and having the time of my life I don’t like this kind of negativity and arguing. People are saying exclusivity is the problem but the producer said if it was multi platform the game design would have been affected and I know it’s low compared to other games but these are just japan numbers we need to wait for worldwide numbers
Opening week is the largest chunk of game sales as well as a good metric for overall franchise health. These are not Evergreen titles they don’t do gangbusters further down the road.
@@MassiveRican While true it's still only a couple of days since release. Not to mention a lot of other big titles released recently roughly at the same month back to back. So the sales will be skewed accordingly, but not the end of the world. Once word of mouth and other aspects are highlighted enough about this game, it will bounce back.
RPGs, especially in Japan, tend to have frontloaded sales and they don't usually sell that well after a few weeks, nor they have good legs, unless they're Pokémon and Dragon Quest
I’ve played on only performance mode and haven’t had any issues. Get a better TV or something, I’m playing on Sony OLED and it’s great. An even going to graphics mode is still very nice. People have an obsession with 60fps but you have to choose which you want, it’s a console, not a PC.
So speaking from personal experience, I used to be all about the playstation as a kid. Now though, most of my games are through PC. I'd rather just upgrade my current PC than get a new console every 5 or so years. Plus Steam and a wide array of games. I think it's in games studios best interests to have their game available on as many platforms as possible, that way you're not leaving out any of your marketable audience, I think a lot of people are past the point of buying a console just to play a certain game.
I would wait for full global sales before we overreact. We already know the PS5 isnt’s Japan’s main choice of console so I not surprised sales are lower in Japan.
Final Fantasy is in decline in Japan because it no longer appeals to Japanese tastes. Its more for Western tastes. Square Enix has their game that appeals to the Japanese: Dragon Quest. Thats why its on Nintendo platforms. I think they figured out that Final Fantasy appeals to the West and Dragon Quest appeals to Japan. I think thats a balanced approach.
While I find the " low userbase" argument dumb, Ido find the partial reasons why FF sales have been on a decline, especially in Japan is because nowdays there's just too many awesome JRPGs to play, back in the day if you are a rpg newbies, FF was always that RPG to look for, but now that's no longer the case when you have awesome JRPGs like Xenoblade, Persona, SMT, FE and fricken Elden Ring etc.
I heard there is multiple factors of why Playstation 5 software is hot garbage in Japan especially FF. 1. FF brand have been tarnished after 13, 15 and 16. 16 was supposed to be the best selling FF game and rekindled Japan PS market but it just did ok 2. Japanese gamer expect a 1 to 1 remake like Mario RPG Remake instead of a retelling of a story and the they just didn't like it 3. Gacha game being dominant on PS5, there is Honkai Star Rail, Genshin, upcoming Wuthering Wave and Arknight Enfield making Japanese people less and less inclined to actually buy software and just play these gacha games for free.
@@raikenninja4843 1. Minor rebuttal, FF14 has been extremely popular in Japan though. 2. Not just Japanese gamers, I think many old FF7 fans either got tired of SE milking FF7, or just busy playing other JRPGs. 3. Well yeah cuz those gacha games definitely got some exclusivity deal from Sony too, but I don't think it's relevant to the poor sales of FF7 rebirth. But Ironically, those gacha are kinds the ps5 sales driver in Japan.
@@Mario123007 I don't think the lack of sales has anything to do with Elden ring or any of the games you mentioned, It has more to do with the huge success of BG3, As that game is a turn- based RPG like FF use to be.

We have seen a lot of AA dev flourished with the Switch and even former PS first developer like Nihon Falcom have started making games for the Switch. It be interesting if big dev like RGG and Capcom or even Square shifted their focus on Switch 2. Heck Midori a prominent Atlus leaker have said that P3R and Metaphor is going to be on Switch 2 which mean Atlus have been on board for the next Switch.
I personally believe that the timed exclusivity thing is a mistake, too. For one thing, it limits the audience from growth. The Rebirth/Remake games have, in all fairness, been only timed exclusives, but I personally believe that putting them on Switch 2 (and the other FF games) is what REALLY needs to happen. After all, where are the audiences who love these kind of games playing on in Japan? That's right, Switch. Many third party publishers got the message and are on board for Switch 2. SquareEnix probably is, but where the Final Fantasy branch is concerned, I think it REALLY needs to make the jump to Switch 2. We already saw traces of it returning with the arrival of 7-12 & 15 (minus 11, 13 & 14). No reason why it shouldn't continue on Switch 2. It ultimately depends on whether Switch 2 can handle them, but either way, I feel like the exclusivity days are numbered. I also don't see this trilogy staying exclusive.
@@Turnajon I wish I had ur optimism, because believe me I’d love to play them and for everyone to have access to them. I just can’t justify another $500 system just to play them
I don't want to be crucified for this, but I don't mind FF games getting away from the ATB. But at the same time why can't they implement a way where you can choose to play the game in an ATB style or real time style in the settings? I'm sure it's completely possible.
It has everything to do with console exclusives, by now people havr their favorite consoles and libraries of games, not everyone can buy a new console for one game, consoles are way expensive, i know i didn't i rather have played it on my Xbox.
10:33 I want a classic experience again alright, but that has nothing to do with turn based combat. I don't hate it, but I don't miss it either. The make or break classic part I want back is the old stylized, nowhere near realistic art direction. The FF series didn't lose me for dropping the turns, it lost me for looking more and more like the generic realism western devs already give me too much of. If the FFVII remakes had updated the horribly dated technical aspects of the visuals while keeping the original art direction and stylized intent, (you know, what Dragon Quest and Mario games have done over the years for example,) I'd actually have been interested. Extremely interested. Without the original visual style though, they're FFVII in name only as far as I'm concerned, and the name itself isn't where my nostalgia lives. FF games won't be system sellers to me or even day one purchases again until they LOOK like FF games again.
The thing about games sales in Japan, Look at the switch games in the top 10, it literally it just Nintendo exclusives on switch selling. The switch 3rd party games are not really selling well. The Japanese market is just weird. 3rd party games sold better on PS4 than switch. if you are not Nintendo, I think its a hopeless market tbh. Rip KH4 sales in jp.
I think the main issue with third-party games not selling that well on Switch is the fact that those developers are not bringing their best efforts to the console, most of the Switch third-party games are old ports from previous generations or smaller titles, like licensed titles. The only third-party Switch games that have managed to sell over a million units in Japan are Minecraft, Momotaro Dentetsu and Monster Hunter: Rise Back in the Game Boy Advance, Nintendo DS, Wii and 3DS days many third-party developers would make unique games that were tailored to Nintendo's systems limitations, but since the Switch is and HD system and it success took many developers by surprise, there's been very few original games made with the Switch's limitations in mind, which is unbelievable considering the Switch has become the best-selling console in Japan Perhaps thing will change with the Switch's successor, but I think many Japanese third-parties have failed in cultivating an audience for their games on Nintendo consoles
GOOD! I hope the game and the ReMake series fails. They ruined the Original Story and this new Story on it's own sucks and is full of padding and filler. Only the Early Access shills gave it a good review. Now that regular people are getting there hands on it you notice those Meta Critic scores are dropping. Went from a 96 overall to a 90 and I think it will end up bottoming out somewhere in the mid to low 80's after it's all said and done. Serves em right... Hopefully they learn there lesson from this, even though I doubt they will.
Make a compelling, coherent game with no bloat and filler, with a sensible grownup writing staff, throw Wokeness out the window, and be honest about your projects Then you'll get decent sales. Easy
Personally I prefer original over the remake as there seemed to be so much more "enjoyagrind crunch" as i call it, add milk (brain matter) let it saturate and I get nonstop delectible bytes of ever changing flavor filled with nutty goodness of different items, weapons, materia, armor along with seemingly different little suprise nibbles of ......(to be continued whence brain/memory finish downloading prior thoughts, theories & post 1950's 1-liners, they're not back in style yet):
The game is incredible. It's a shame the name doesn't have the pull it used to. I think in Japan the Switch so much greater a draw over there. Maybe they can get Rebirth on Switch 2?
I think they Switch's successor maybe able to run FFVII Remake, perhaps with some sacrifices, but I don't know if it'll be able to run Rebirth, unless some developer compresses the game's files and does some tech wizardry, kind of like the way some developers manage to run games like Doom and Doom Eternal, NieR: Automata and Hogwart's Legacy on Switch. Maybe those ports aren't the ideal way to play some of those games, but some users don't mind to play and inferior version if they the Switch's the only console they own The main problem is that Square-Enix made some sort of exclusivity deal with Sony so we're not so sure when, or if, the games would release on other consoles. I think it's more likely that S-E makes some sort of Pocket Edition for VII Remake and Rebirth akin to what they did with XV. But I also believe that S-E will port the entire FFXIII Trilogy and XV on Nintendo's next console
Stop pandering to ppl that don't play the game and sneak in patches to please the woke community instead and patch the graphics and also add more costumes like the mobile version
I loved to play it but buying a PS5 and the game is just not in the budget over whatever else I would need in life. Inflation and others things have just made gaming such a low priority for me personally. And I’m sure I'm not alone in the this being the case for the general population currently.
They day they make at least a spinoff series that plays more like the older games is the day I'll return to the franchise. And no, I don't hate action games, I've played DMC4 for hours on end over the past decade of all things.
The Asian market is now so obsessed with mobile phone/handheld gaming that I'm sure Square & Sony expected Japan sales not to be crazy high. They reply more on the West for these games so those sales are far more important, its a shame we don't get sales numbers like Japan gets.
Games are more expensive nowadays and not everyone has a PS5, which is also expensive.
it's not that simple. Square-ENIX doesnt make good FF games, period. and the true fans of FF stopped buying FF games long ago during the great betrayal of seeing Squaresoft legacy being disrespected and disrespecting the original fanbase. no one buys them anymore. they've been boycotted

Final fantasy can barely run on ps5. You mean Xbox and pc
Exactly
Square needs to stop doing these exclusivity deals (Sony can have marketing rights)
I agree with your statement. Blame on Sony period
I would have easily bought this day one if it came to PC
I think the problem might mostly be related to cost + exclusive to PS5. A lot of inflation has occured between Remake and Rebirth. Plus this time the game is only available on one console. It's not as accesible as the previous entry
remake was exlusive at launch as well.
Nah it’s just that PS5 fans don’t buy exclusives like that they mostly play third party games.
@@gizunoglunmig0801yeah but it launched on ps4 which A lot of people had. Now it’s simply ps5, plus games going up $10. To some that might be nothing but others, it might just be out the budget.
they have said that if they did final fantasy 7 rebirth on multiple platforms at once the world would be less rich and smaller.
Also consider that Remake was at the end of the PS4 era.
There is no reason why ff7 and 16 couldn't have released the same day on PC
Hell, I'm playing FF7 Remake on my Mac via Crossover. If it can run at 4k 60fps on an ARM processor, no reason an Xbox or PC couldn't run it.
@@TheTechOrc I'm not a PC person so you kinda lost me there
Sony is paying Square allot of money up front to get exclusives. Helps developing the game.

You are better off getting a PC and getting playing it in 2-3 years.
Sony has no FIRST party games company out. THat doesn't mean the Ps5 doesn't have exclusives. Rise of Ronin, Stellar Blade are ALL Ps5 exclusives. Including Rebirth.
i will never bought ps5 not even for FF7 sadly, i like my switch and laptop more ;p
Horizon Forbidden West is also amazing, and there are the Spiderman games...
They also need to release a physical "complete" bundle with intergrade. I would have bought that.
You could pre-order a bundle on PS5 with Remake the DLC and Rebirth for the same price as Rebirth so I am sure they will do that for PC too.
That doesn't make any sense. Part 3 isn't even out yet.
It already exists , its called the Twin Pack edition.

Perhaps Sony’s local reputation has declined as well, and people won’t be keen to support a console manufacturer that just laid off 8% of its global workforce, despite record-selling games.
its not a remake. its a sequel trilogy titled remake.
That's part of the problem, in my opinion the other reason is that it's cool the way FF7 rebirth the way that it is now a action story driven jrpg, but a turn FF fan really wants a strategic turn based jrpg.

I could be wrong, but it's not like Nintendo needs FFVII, they haven't had a mainline FF game in their consoles since 1994 and since then they have filled the JRPG needs with their own games like Pokémon and Xenoblade

But I'm not really sure what could they do, the Switch has been the first Nintendo home console, due to being a hybrid, in which S-E gave it more support, but while games like Octopath Traveller I & II, Bravely Default II, NEO The World Ends with You and Live-A-Live's remake have been amazing, not all of them became huge best-sellers nor they look like they push the Switch's hardware to its limits
I'm not sure if Square could make a sort of Final Fantasy gaiden, kind of what Capcom did with Monster Hunter: Rise.

I think people just don't want to end up paying 300 bucks for the full 'remake'
They’re stand alone games. remake is about 86 hours of content. Rebirth is over 100 hours. And they’re regular price games.
If you've never purchased remake part one. You can literally buy the bundle for both remake and rebirth for the price of one game.
you don't have to, but I probably would. These games are nuts good so far.
Dude chill with that argument. Growing up I always wished ff7 was longer. And if you want the original experience so badly. Go play the original.
I have had fun with the remake and having fun with rebirth
its 70 for both fym
On launch?
I think it has more to do with the decline sales of the PS5, because not only did rebirth not sell very well at launch. it also didn't move an hardware sells as the Switch outsold it.
Not to mention most of Sony exclusive games are also coming to PC, so that could also factor into the lack of sales for PS5.
Square dont consider 5 millions being healthy what makes you think less will be? even the 13 millions from the tomb raider remake was considered bad
What you're failing to understand is that those who love Mana love it because it has ALWAYS been an action based game. Final Fantasy DRASTICALLY moved away from the base that purchsed MILLIONS of turned based games.

As a long time fan myself of the og ff games I doubt that's going to happen
it's not so crazy when in japan a game like Super Mario RPG remake has bigger opening sales than FF7 Rebirth.@@javonjames4573
Same here. Ever since the series turned to hack and slash adventure it feels like Devil May Cry with the Final Fantasy name slapped onto it.
I cannot imagine a mainline Final Fantasy launching on a Nintendo system, and it not because there's still bad blood between Square and Nintendo, but it is due that Final Fantasy has become a visual and technological showcase and that's why Square favors the most powerful consoles. FF is not like Dragon Quest, a game series that always releases its titles on the most popular console in Japan, that's why Dragon Quest IX released on the DS, X on the Wii and why Enix decided to make two separate versions of XI, one for the PS4 and another for the 3DS
Square could try to make a sort of Final Fantasy Gaiden game for the Switch or its successor, but very few Japanese third-party developers seem to open to the idea of making a big game for Nintendo, save for a few exceptions like CAPCOM's Monster Hunter: Rise from Capcom, Atlus' Shin Megami Tensei V and Platinum's Bayonetta 3.
I say not having it on intermission and rebirth for ps4 is kinda dumb move
intermission FOR SURE.
As a story guy, i'm very dissapointed by the recent FF too,
it's all very mediocre.
Stfu its a masterpiece.
@@hyonnj9563 bro i swear to God people like you are why games turn into cut and paste jobs. The Minigames are amazing. Im tired of linear nonsense experiences. All the crap out there to insult and you nitpick like this. F off.
@@nickcoleman7080 Maybe. Its subjective really. As I said, the character portrayals and dialog was spot on. But this is NOT "Final Fantasy".
FANS FOR 20 YEARS:- *REMAKE FF7, PLEASE*

Fans: wtf is this?
Nomura: Sephiroth is MICKEY MOUSE!
They should release day 1 for every system
And then the development time would be 8 years instead of 4. 🤣
Most games now release multiplatform and they are using the unreal engine that makes that easier to do
@@michelingesoftit doesn’t. I can tell you’ve never dealt with unreal engine or know anyone that does. It does NOT work like that at all
How does this compare to FF X-2’s drop off from X? I ask, because even though this is its own game, many perceive this as an extension of Remake. Not a DLC per say, but I’d imagine only those who played Remake bought this, so it makes sense it will have smaller sales. It is unfair to compare this to another mainline FF game.
Final Fantasy X's debut week in Japan was 1.749.737 copies sold, it ended up selling 2.325.215. Final Fantasy X-2's first week was 1.472.914, and it ended up selling 1.960.937 copies
@@marcosdheleno Japan tends to favor physical games compared to digital downloads. I think it's kind of obvious if we compare the sales of the regular disc-based PS5, which has sold over 4.613.083 units, to the PS5 Digital Edition, which has only sold 732.266 units.
I’m shocked by these sales in Japan 😮 Rebirth is a goty candidate so I hope folks pick it up.
dont be. these figures are for physical copies only. and with the ps5 also having a digital only version. there's an arguent to be made that its not actually less copies sold, but a transition period to a more digital sales focus.
the digital ps5 was focused on japanese market to begin with.
@@marcosdheleno the digital split is not as big as people think, especially in Japan where they prefer to buy physical.
2: world size: not only would it need a gpu powerful enough to handle these environments, it would also need an extremely fast ssd to be able to load these quickly and traverse in real time
3: graphics.
1. File on Switch is always low, Nier for example is 11gb for Switch but 40gb on PC, don't know about PS though
The thing with Nintendo is that they have become to good at developing their own game that already cover many of the genres that are typicically done by third-parties on their competitor's systems, so they don't have to worry about games like Persona or Final Fantasy not coming to their consoles since they have sort of equivalents with their own franchises like Fire Emblem or Xenoblade, even if they do not sell as much, as long as they fill those genres
If the rumors about the Switch's successor being at least as powerful as a PS4 Pro/Xbox One I can see some late ports of games such as Capcom's Resident Evil VII, VIII, R2, R3 and R4, Atlus' Persona 3R and Metaphor: RePhantazio, Namco's Tekken 8 maybe, SNK's King of Fighters XV and Fatal Fury: City of the Wolves, ArcSys' Guilty Gear: Strive, From Software's Elden Ring, etc.
They really need to Sony.
@@blackraven85_1 They need to what?
Yeah square should've had an aa final fantasy turn based game for the switch
Though to be fair, one of the main issues with the Switch is its underpowered hardware, but very few developers have tried to make games that are tailored to its limitations
In the case of Square-Enix, it's kind of unbelievable that they used to remake games like Final Fantasy III and IV in 3D for the DS, but haven't tried to make an original FF for the Switch. The closest thing we got were games like Bravely Default II and Octopath Traveller I & II, and while they looked great, I can't believe why they haven't tried to make something bigger like a full-fledge Final Fantast spin-off in the style of the PSOne games or FFX but for the Switch's hardware. In part I think it's due to budget and development issues and perhaps they don't think there's an audience for that type of game on the Switch, but there's not going to be an audience if you don't try to cultivate one
I don't think things are going to change even if the Switch 2 manages to be significantly more powerful, there's always going to be some sort of excuse
@@pablocasas5906
Yeah, it’s sad to see that SE used to make games tailored to a weaker hardware like the DS and 3DS, yet, still make them look great and play great!
@@pablocasas5906 if you take the time you can create a great looking game on the system
They did, in all fairness, bring 7-9, 10 & 12 & 15 to Switch. That was a good step.
They're too far gone to make a mainline play like that, It'd have to have a spinoff title
That said, I wish they did it. I'd buy in a heartbeat
Yeah Square learning the hard way that putting your games only on playstation is a bad strategy
you do know, they put them on sony first due to the money sony pays up, right? its also cheaper to make and optimize a game for a single console first.
finally, they took less than 4 years to make rebirth, which means, it also cost ALOT LESS to make than remake. maybe even less than xvi.
finally japanese sales are no real indicators, since japan is a weird market for games, due to both an economy in shambles, but also their focus on digital only/portable devices.
these sales figures are just for physical sales. they dont account for the real number. specially, as i said before, the market is moving to digital sales more and more. which results in less "traditional copies" being sold as a result.
the ps5 also has a digital only model that is cheaper and slightly smaller. those are 2 aspects that the japanese market is looking more interested in.

Yup they split the fanbase and now they gotta deal with the consequences
Final Fantasy should be more cross platform; and I know the resent ones are too advanced to run on Switch; though hopefully the next gen Nintendo console could change that. But if the new IPs want to continue being a success, there should be future Final Fantasy games on there.
Don't think Nintendo's next console will be able to run Rebirth, at most it'd be able to somewhat run Remake, or just like what happened with the Kingdom Hearts games Square-Enix will just make some cloud (no pun intended) versions of both Remake and Rebirth
S-E could have tried to build an audience for FF games on Nintendo consoles, but their only efforts have been late ports of old FF games, the Pixel Remasters and a bunch of spin-offs like the Crisis Core and Crystal Chronicles remasters and the panned Chocobo GP game
I really doubt S-E considered making a FF game tailored to the Switch's hardware limitations.

I knew something was up when after a week Square didn't make a 1 million in so many days comment.
People complaining that they don't have a ps5 after knowing it was gonna be on a ps5 when announced 4years ago ...😳😳🤣🤣🤣

And just for comparison, Square-Enix's last sales update given on September, 14th of last confirmed that FFVII Remake sold over 7 million shipped and digital copies. On the other hand, Nintendo confirmed Zelda: Tears of the Kingdom sold over 10 million units in its first three days, and in their lastest financial report from February 6th, TotK has sold over 20 million copies
Maybe if they made a faithful remake and not spit in the face of the true fans it would sell
Because it's available on only one platform. Duh
@@sorahearts3317 well, this week's Famitsu sales numbers have arrived and FFVII dropped to second place with 24.482 units, which contitutes a 90,68% drop, the lowest for a big Final Fantasy game in Japan yet
I feel like ever since they went to $70 sales haven’t been as high all around besides a few outliers
wanted to play this game so bad...sadly its exclusive to ps5 and there's absolutely no way im buying a console just for 1 game...Hope PC version comes out sooner .
This news makes me sad. I agree that they are missing out by skipping the Switch with their biggest franchise.
dude, no way in hell it would run on the switch. they would literaly need to make a completely new engine just to run there. and hell, even nintendo cant make games that run well enough on the switch to begin with. let alone other companies.
when the switch 2 release, it will probably get a version there. but og switch? unless we talking streaming mode only. which is atrocious at best.
Same
agreed, Imagine wanting RPG elements and a decent story in an rpg game
I've never been an Final Fantasy guy myself. Don't think it's an bad series. Just not my cup of tea. Personally, I'll take Dragon Quest anyday.
@@jaretco6423 that’s fair, personally Final Fantasy 6 & 9 are all time classic RPGs to me.
I can take or leave the rest apart from FF5 & 7 tbh.
Agreed, though I also had a lot of fun with 12. Nothing good at all since then though.
16 wasn’t as polished as it could have been. The mainstream audience is rejecting the changes to FFVII.
The closest thing to a Final Fantasy game tailored to the Nintendo Switch are Bravely Default II and the Octopath Traveller games, but it sometimes feel like S-E, and other Japanese developers, are afraid of bringing some of their biggest franchises on the Switch due to some sort of loyalty to Sony or perhaps they don't want to dilute the brand's name by making a game for and underpowered console
I could also argue that Square-Enix also didn't bring as many Dragon Quest games to the Switch compared to the titles released on the DS and 3DS, instead making some spin-off titles a major late port and porting the mobile versions of Dragon Quest I to III (I know there's a DQIII HD-2D remake on the works but we haven't heard much about it since its announcement).
Knowing square it’s not just going to be three parts they are going to milk it into 4+ parts and add extra DLC on top of it
In all fairness, those games were always timed exclusives. True, an Xbox port has yet to appear, but I did hear that there were rumors of it potentially coming (but take it with a grain of salt).
Make the damn game available on all platforms. So many people pirated the remake because of it's bad port despite having to pay in full price.... Smh
It just came out. Calm down.
I've heard Rebirth's number in the UK are a bit lower compared to Remake. However, in Spain there above the Remake and XVI
1. FF brand have been tarnished after 13, 15 and 16. 16 was supposed to be the best selling FF game and rekindled Japan PS market but it just did ok
2. Japanese gamer expect a 1 to 1 remake like Mario RPG Remake instead of a retelling of a story and the they just didn't like it
@@danzoelizio2288 Pretty sure all of those games, a couple of decades ago, you'll be hard to find a decent rpg that's not FF or ecrn not by Square Enix. But now yeah elden ring abd BG3 shows Square Enix that their mainline FF is falling behind.
@@Mario123007 You know out of the point of gacha game kind also beg the question
1. Will Nintendo allow these gacha game on their next gen system since some of the game directly compete with their franchise like Genshin and Wuthering Waves
2. Will big Japanese dev moved away from PS5 to Switch 2 because these gacha game kind of killed their software like for average gamer why would you pay for Trails when you can get Trails for free (Honkai Star Rail).
Here’s what they should do. Actually do an actual remake of FFVII, minus the garbage changes. And make it a Switch exclusive.
No fault of the game itself. It’s freaking amazing.
Yeah and Xbox has a bunch of those, even ff7 crisis core remake but we all know it’s not happening
@@fenrirsfolly92 So sure are you? I say we wait and see.
The only third-party Switch games that have managed to sell over a million units in Japan are Minecraft, Momotaro Dentetsu and Monster Hunter: Rise
Back in the Game Boy Advance, Nintendo DS, Wii and 3DS days many third-party developers would make unique games that were tailored to Nintendo's systems limitations, but since the Switch is and HD system and it success took many developers by surprise, there's been very few original games made with the Switch's limitations in mind, which is unbelievable considering the Switch has become the best-selling console in Japan
Perhaps thing will change with the Switch's successor, but I think many Japanese third-parties have failed in cultivating an audience for their games on Nintendo consoles
Make a compelling, coherent game with no bloat and filler, with a sensible grownup writing staff, throw Wokeness out the window, and be honest about your projects
Then you'll get decent sales.
Maybe those ports aren't the ideal way to play some of those games, but some users don't mind to play and inferior version if they the Switch's the only console they own
The main problem is that Square-Enix made some sort of exclusivity deal with Sony so we're not so sure when, or if, the games would release on other consoles. I think it's more likely that S-E makes some sort of Pocket Edition for VII Remake and Rebirth akin to what they did with XV. But I also believe that S-E will port the entire FFXIII Trilogy and XV on Nintendo's next console
It’s unfortunate cause it’s the best ff is X
Stop pandering to ppl that don't play the game and sneak in patches to please the woke community instead and patch the graphics and also add more costumes like the mobile version
I loved to play it but buying a PS5 and the game is just not in the budget over whatever else I would need in life. Inflation and others things have just made gaming such a low priority for me personally. And I’m sure I'm not alone in the this being the case for the general population currently.
Never mind RUclipsr's are getting copyright struck for music IN THE GAME (From singapore...apparently false claims)
