It won’t win. But it does deserve to be in that conversation. It’s 40-50 hours of content and some of the highest quality content to release this year. All Fromsoftware games are Masterpieces, work of art and love for games if you are not able to finish them or get into them that's another story (These games are not for everyone)
Why vote. They literally create categories just to give awards to specific people. Last year zelda got an award because made a category for it. Cyberpunk got the award for best continuing game over genshin and ff16 because of a dlc release. Its a freaking joke. Yall dont waste your time voting
I agree with your logic re: DLC. I think Erdtree is big enough to be a stand alone game and so that part qualifies but you cannot play it independently so that part does not. I do not think it is going to win but yeah it is weird. I love FromSoft games. In fact I tend to be luke warm on other Soulslikes but their games are comfy and familiar in a way that reminds me of why I play games and what got me back into gaming. Even so, I don’t think the DLC should be in these categories for the exact reasons you mentioned.
The Game Awards should distinguish between standalone games and DLCs by creating separate categories for GOTY and DLC/Expansion of the Year. DLCs like The Witcher 3: Blood and Wine, which bring standalone-level innovation, could still qualify for GOTY if they meet a higher threshold for independence. Conversely, DLCs like Shadow of the Erdtree, while significant and transformative, are better suited for DLC/Expansion of the Year as they primarily expand the base game. This approach ensures fairness while celebrating all types of gaming content.
You know what I think? TGA allowed DLCs to be nominated for GOTY because they’re afraid of awarding games that actually deserved the award out of fear of upsetting the media journalists who are voting. Warhammer 40K should have been nominated for GOTY, but they weren’t. I wonder why? Also where is Sonic x Shadow generations? Why wasn’t that game nominated?
To be fair, Black Myth Wukong, as per these so-called critics, it is against the femalist, lack of diversity, and most important it is from China, how many low scores reviews were really talking about the game itself, so they are lucky to get to the low 80s.
I would say they went more for publicity when putting a DLC in the game of the year nominations. Wukong deserves to be there based on it being the core game game of the year not DLC. Games like Tekken or Prince of Persia should be were Shadow of the Erdtree is.
Who cares what rating the journalists gave Black myth wukong. Nobody cares what journalists think anymore. It’s the lowest rated game cause the journalists are incompetent. I think it’s too late to question whether DLCs are eligible for Game of the Year because they’ve always been eligible-even before Elden Ring: Shadow of the Erdtree. Some claim that The Game Awards changed their rules just to include Shadow of the Erdtree, but that’s simply not true. The guidelines clearly state that DLCs can qualify for Game of the Year. For example, The Witcher 3: Blood and Wine won Best RPG while competing against full standalone games. If people disagree with Shadow of the Erdtree being nominated simply because it’s a DLC, then by that logic, games like Final Fantasy 7 Rebirth or Astro Bot shouldn’t be eligible either. FF7 Rebirth is a remake of an existing game-we already know the characters, the story, and much of its world. Meanwhile, Astro Bot, which initially released in 2020, feels more like an extended demo or additional content than a brand-new game. Nominating it for Game of the Year in 2024 isn’t fair to completely new games like Stellar Blade or Helldivers 2, which are fresh IPs. As for Black Myth: Wukong, it’s a mid-tier game with an 80 on Metacritic. It didn’t have the staying power or impact to deserve a nomination, falling out of the spotlight shortly after release. wtf is balatro? I swear every year there are games nominated for GOTY that I’ve never heard of. I’m basically done with the “gaming industry” now and have just settled into knowing what I like and what looks interesting to me, all the crap around it is just a waste of time. I don’t really care about hype or what anyone elses opinions are. Ys X Nordics is my GOTY. Bye
Im just gonna put TGA as a background video while playing games and only glance to view if they announce something hype, I dont care about these awards anymore.
It’s a Western show, for Western audiences subject to the same skewed perspectives as all other current Western media are, for the better part of the last 15 years. I’m absolutely not surprised by their choices and have stopped caring since a long, long time ago.
I'm voting for Refantazio ONLY cause Unicorn Overlord isn't there. That game is legit my GOTY, it's the first JRPG in years that I didn't want to put down when I beat the game
Not defending this decision, but the Xenoblade comparison isn’t a one-to-one. 2023 was a more competitive year than 2024, plain and simple. And if any expansion was going to get them to do this, it would be that to the game that beat Xenoblade 3 for GOTY. Still though, I agree them letting a DLC get the nom is a bad decision.
maaan, they just couldnt put Like A Dragon Inifinite wealth for a game of the year nominee..Honestly, RGG deserves more credit..I really do hope they snag best rpg
Elden Ring did not get enough nominations I feel to win GOTY. The winner is usually the game with the most or maybe second most nominations and from what I remember, SOTE does not even have the second most noms
*Only people still watching this show are ponies trying to see if Spider-man 2 finally gets an award and since they are saying DLC and remasters are eligible, then they will finally have a chance.*
I don't understand the appeal of black myth wukong..I played it and it's a great game for sure...but the gameplay and story compare to other nominees is just..generic?after I finished it I just forgot about it.
The Game Awards is more about generating controversy than it is about awards. Whatever they choose as GOTY doesn't matter. Its just gameing journalists trying to remain relevant. Many of those journalists that chose the winner probably didn't even play the game that won. I assume those that did didn't beat the it.
Did they nominate Witcher dlc before? I don’t know if they was playable without the main game…so it’s been likely done before. A shooter shouldn’t be in an action category.
Elden ring was released 2 years & 9 months ago. How the hell is a DLC for a game that's almost 3 years old up for "GOTY"? Unreal! The game awards are a joke & everybody knows it. Silent Hill 2 didn't even get a nod?!?
The world is not just Metacritic and the USA. The jury is global, including some from China, Japan and other countries in Asia. And Black Myth is a huge hit in China. Stellar Blade probably only managed to get 2 nominations thanks to a global, unbiased jury. Tastes differ. Kojima also said at the time that Death Stranding was rated much better in Europe than in the USA. Various AA RPGs such as Gothic, Elex or the stuff from Spider are also rated higher in Europe than in the USA. Personally, I welcome it when the jury outside the USA and Europe has more influence. IGN recently bought up various competing media such as Eurogamer, and in my opinion IGN is not particularly competent.
Monster Hunter Iceborne was nominated as Best Role Playing Game in 2019 and The Witcher 3 Blood and Wine WON best RPG in 2016. The Witcher 3 won Best RPG and Game of the Year in 2015 by the way. This is nothing new.
A couple things stand out to me with this years awards: Metaphor definitely has a very good chance to win as it feels like it made even not jrpg fans love a jrpg Black myth wukong i think would be normal people's game of the year but will not win because critics seem to hate it cause it's made by a chinese studio Ff7 rebirth is personally my game of the year and i know it is as well for a lot of people, it got the most nominations (though ff16 also had a lot but only won one if i remember correctly) so it has a good chance to win I don't think balatro will win because it is an indie game (or a miracle happens i guess), huge w for indie devs and players. Astro bot is really good, insane graphics and all, both players and critics loved it so i'd see it win as well Every critic and game awards employee has to be fired if elden ring wins in any highly contested category
The game awards is such BS. a bias popularity contest and not actually having the highest rated games as candidates. I don't play Xenoblade but the DLC is way more highly rated and just bc its Elden Ring its the sexy pic they put it there smh.

Shilling for that saudi bloodmoney, MMM MMM tastes like blood and zero integrity.
wtf is balatro? I swear every year there are games nominated for GOTY that I’ve never heard of. I’m basically done with the “gaming industry” now and have just settled into knowing what I like and what looks interesting to me, all the crap around it is just a waste of time. I don’t really care about hype or what anyone elses opinions are. Ys X Nordics is my GOTY. Bye
So you don't know what Balatro is yet have no issue to imply it's "crap?"
Imagine not knowing one of the greatest games ever and staying in your bubble and not giving it credit
Cope 😊
Anyone else tired of seeing awards where industries come together to tell each other how great they are?
Litte Kitty, Big City got snubbed!
Infinite Wealth was ROBBED. Getting replaced by DLC is BS
Im just gonna put TGA as a background video while playing games and only glance to view if they announce something hype, I dont care about these awards anymore.
If you really didn’t care you wouldn’t bother having it on at all
Considering how they describe the best direction category, I really think Zelda deserves a spot over one of those other choices.
Imagine next year having all GOTY nominations being DLC?
I don't understand the appeal of black myth wukong..I played it and it's a great game for sure...but the gameplay and story compare to other nominees is just..generic?after I finished it I just forgot about it.
I remember when ToTK got Robbed for GOTY and when they Disrespected Aounma
Are we gonna ignore that Xenoblade Chronicles X lost to the Witcher 3 DLC back in the day at the game award show? smh
The Game Awards is more about generating controversy than it is about awards. Whatever they choose as GOTY doesn't matter. Its just gameing journalists trying to remain relevant. Many of those journalists that chose the winner probably didn't even play the game that won. I assume those that did didn't beat the it.
"Cast your votes for the Game Awards!"
"Do our votes matter?"
"No."
Did they nominate Witcher dlc before? I don’t know if they was playable without the main game…so it’s been likely done before. A shooter shouldn’t be in an action category.
Clown Awards.
This makes me feel like tears would have won last year if this was a thing
Metaphor Non-Fantazio 🤣
That sounds like the rereleased version that's coming out next year
Dragon's Dogma 2 should have been nominated for GOTY.
Good competition here. Here’s to a new trailer being shown of MP4: Beyond!
Monster Hunter Iceborne was nominated as Best Role Playing Game in 2019 and The Witcher 3 Blood and Wine WON best RPG in 2016. The Witcher 3 won Best RPG and Game of the Year in 2015 by the way. This is nothing new.
No Stellar Blade. They did this last year with Hogwarts too. It's not politically correct enough for them even though it's a fantastic game.
A couple things stand out to me with this years awards:
Metaphor definitely has a very good chance to win as it feels like it made even not jrpg fans love a jrpg
Black myth wukong i think would be normal people's game of the year but will not win because critics seem to hate it cause it's made by a chinese studio
Ff7 rebirth is personally my game of the year and i know it is as well for a lot of people, it got the most nominations (though ff16 also had a lot but only won one if i remember correctly) so it has a good chance to win
I don't think balatro will win because it is an indie game (or a miracle happens i guess), huge w for indie devs and players.
Astro bot is really good, insane graphics and all, both players and critics loved it so i'd see it win as well
Every critic and game awards employee has to be fired if elden ring wins in any highly contested category
Just a show for industry insiders to pleasure themselves. What a joke.
The game awards is such BS. a bias popularity contest and not actually having the highest rated games as candidates. I don't play Xenoblade but the DLC is way more highly rated and just bc its Elden Ring its the sexy pic they put it there smh.
I stopped caring about this show since Xenoblade 3 lost Best Narrative and Soundtrack. Honestly, I hope Elden Ring wins again, just to see this show burn 🤣
I love elden ring but you have to get quite far into the base game to even access the expansion
Elden Ring already won GOTY 2022, I know its REALLY good but its not a full game.
I will never take game farts seriously. Journalists are a joke.
I love Metaphor, man. I'm so proud of them.
