My favorite lens on my A7R3 and A6000. It convinced me that I might not be as much of a wide focal length shooter as I thought. A great length for street shooting people without getting right in their space. Terrific size for a travel kit. I hope the new FE 35mm f1.8 has the same color, sharpness and bokeh.
I've taken backpacking for multiple trips and I believe dust have gotten itself underneath the focus ring and while it's not "scratchy" when I rotate the focus ring, at some points, I feel a bit of resistance and it's no longer super smooth. Just to anyone who's curious.. still a remarkable lens though.
I've had mine for a couple of months now and love it. The quality of the images it produces, be it portraits, landscapes, or street are fantastic. After buying this lens I could in no way justify the extra ££££'s for the 1.4 for no real benefit. As you say, the size is brilliant, so easy to carry around and I just love it when it's on the gimbal. It's definitely a keeper, if you are thinking of getting one, just do it, you won't regret it 🙂
There are a couple more differences between this and the 1.4 though - there’s the 11 blades as opposed to 9 for smoother bokeh, the weather sealing, the aperture ring, more elements and of course the superior quality glass
I paid $450 USD for a used version in mint condition. It works great on my APSC cameras :A6400 and A6500. I tried the GM f/1.4 version and found it too large, too expensive and it doesn't focus quite as fast as the f/1.8 model. I shoot with a two camera system and have this on my A6500 and usually my 30mm f/2.4 Sigma on the A6400. Then I need a really wide shot, I use the 12mm f/2.0 Rokinon. All in all, I am a happy camper!
I applied the same reasoning with my Nikon lenses. I paid for the extra aperture stop for my 35mm, but not my 85mm. That saved me a lot of money on the lens and the 35mm and 85mm have the same thread size, so I can swap ND filter's, polarizer filter's, etc. The 85mm is much lighter than the 35mm and makes it a good lens to use while walking around and making photo's.
I upgraded my Gear from Sony A58Y to a A7ii and i bought that Lense 85mm f1.8 instead too and it broke my mind in all new views of photos i can ever get what i never saw with my eyes. Love that sense ❤📸 and good Video again 🤌

You’re absolutely correct about the importance of weight + size for travel and street photography. I have a bunch of Sigma ART lenses that I absolutely love but I keep leaving them in my hotel when I’m out on the streets. I have the Sony FE 28mm/2.0 and it’s a pleasure to shoot with! Next I’m planning to grab this 85mm/1.8 and probably the 55/1.8 and have those in my bag when travelling. My heavier lenses will continue to get used in studio and more controlled shoots. Great review!
Hey Pierre. Thank you so much for your enthousiasm on Sony and it's gear.. Im going from a Nikon to a Sony A7II soon, because of you. I think it's the best choice i will ever make. Your enthiousiasm really got me started again with the hobby that i left long time ago :)
yes it's worth it! I love it! I use it for portrait work and it's as sharp as my Zeiss lenses. great value!!! (Don't bother with the GM lens, save your money, it's not worth any difference it might offer.)
Hello from Kyiv Ukraine. I also have this lens and it is very good. I shoot fashion models and portraits for work so I purchased the Samyang 85mm F1.4 AF. Awesome. For photos if you want a F1.4 it works as a native lens but not so good for video right now but Samyang will be addressing this with a future firmware update they said.
When it comes to glass, Sony are really giving Canon a run for the money. Sony appears to have some really beautiful glass, as many of your videos show. I hope you get to view the new Sony 100 to 600mm. That looks to be a great value/IQ lense to have. Makes me want to switch to Sony! Thanks again for another great video.
glad to hear your honest thoughts on it - ever considered shooting with the helios 85 1.5? it's a very artistic lens but you might enjoy, who knows haha
I recently took it with me to shoot some street photography and I didn't enjoy it as much as I thought I would. I like better wider focal lengths. I'll use it for portraits though! Great video!
Hi Pierre, First off, just want to say congrats on the channel. I'm new to following you, and have really enjoyed your RUclips and IG channels. Very refreshing, and super interesting topics. especially for us passionate hobbyists out there :-) . Question for you. I've been a Lumix Micro 4/3 guy (GX8) for a few years now, and am considering moving up to full-frame with the Sony A7R III (I don't need the MP or Video advantages of the IV). I'll be shooting mostly portraits, and the occasional travel landscapes. I feel like the 85/1.8 would be a GREAT first lens, but I keep looking at the 24-105/4.0 as the most flexible option for me, given I'm not ready to buy TWO expensive lenses yet. I'm interested in your opinion! Merci pour tout l'excellent travail que vous faites !
Great video! You a hit a really important point with the size. I also notice that I don't like taking my big heavy lenses around as much as smaller ones.
Hi pierre, nice review! Been watching your videos to learn more about street photography. Just want to ask if i used this in apsc camera. The focal length will be x1.5 right? So 127mm. I want to clarify as well which is very important to me. Will be the aperture in using full frame lens in crop sensor camera would be x1.5 aswell? So the 1.8 aperture would be 2.7f?
The 50mm really have a lot of downside, some of it lack af, loud af noise bcs it is on early production. Sony have been improved and I would say that the 35mm and also 85mm doesn’t have the same issues...
Hey Pierre. Just discovered your channel with the "7 secrets to getting sharper photos for the rest of your life" video. This is the second video that I have now seen and I am hooked! Keep up the content. We are all enjoying it (:
Totally agree, Pierre. I love that lens. Together with the 35 f/2.8 and 55 f/1.8, a Sony shooter can have three ridiculously light and reasonably-priced standard primes in his bag. Only thing I don’t have yet since switching to Sony is a good wide-angle. Still using my 24-105 for landscapes and wide stuff. Any suggestions? Is Sony’s 16-35 as good as people say or would you go with a wide prime or 2?
KarltheFirst The Sony 16-35 f4 is my first ever 16-35. For many years in Canon I’ve been shooting 24-70 as a standard. But felt that I needed a bit more width while traveling all around street shots. I am very very impressed by the performance in focus and sharpness. It’s f4 which I am not very used to but cranking that iso with the Sony is no problem!
Awesome guys, thanks so much for your replies. I honestly never quite got the need for an f/2.8 in a wide-angle zoom since I use them mostly for landscapes, but Daniel, you make a good point that they can be great for street stuff as well (and I’ve seen you use the 16-35 on the street also, Pierre). So I was pretty set on the f/4 and then started reading these RAVE reviews about the Sony f/2.8 16-35 (and the weight difference isn’t that great from the f/4 either). So now I can’t decide, but glad to hear about your experience with the f/4, Daniel. Pierre, do you have the Zeiss f/4 or the Sony f/2.8? I know the price difference is big, but I’m amazed that the f/2.8 is almost as light, which makes it hard for me to look away from it...
Oh and Pierre, I watched the low-light chopper vid, it was great! I still have trouble understanding how people get shots from a fast-moving helicopter at nighttime. I may need to watch it again for the technical part. The first time I was mostly enjoying the views of Chicago, having never been there...
great review ! I use your trick on a7iv setting lens button to eye detection, whatever the focus mode. It is awesome, while just activating eye detetcion doesn't work pretty well. However on a7rv, i don't find that function. Can you help me ? I have the feeling that Sony is so confident in eye detection with IA that they removed that option.

I am getting into professional portraiture. Thank you so much.
Idk if you are interested about this lens but there is 50mm 1.1 lens , search for kamlan version ii its around 200$, or there is more expensive alternative
The weight of the 1.4 is kind of absurd lol. Tinkered with one at the Sony Showroom in Japan and immediately told myself "yeah, I'll never want to lug this thing around all day".
Hey Pierre, thanks for the nice review man. It’s always about finding that sweet spot in your composition and how one uses the lens. I got some good results with my Sony a6000 with that lens as a test I did. It was pretty sharp. Of course you’re using the A7R3 which has a 42 MP so you got a slight advantage in terms of sharpness. Maybe it being TOO sharp 😂 nonetheless man, thanks for such a nice review. Always look forward to your videos.
I have both lenses and the 85 is definitely a more nimble and easier to use and carry lens. The 90 is almost too sharp for flattering portraits but I do love the quality of that lens. I bought mine for the macro ( and I don't think the 85 wa available then) but for general purposes, if i had to do it again, I would have gone with the 85 and skipped the 90.
@@chryseass.5143 Thank you. That's my thinking too. I don't like macro as much as I like shooting other things. And, for some macro shots I prefer a long telephoto lens with an extension tube. Thanks for taking the time to answer.
Hello Pierre! I recently went to Cancun and took my Sony A7iii l, lenses and some gear a total of 3500 dollars. Customs asked if I had over 4000 worth of photography gear. My question to you is what do you say when traveling to countries and you have expensive gear over that limit? Have experienced this at all? Thanks!
Hey Jose! Yes I always say it is less. The reason is because you're not transporting NEW gear - it is used one that you have been using already - so its real value is actually a lot lower :) Hope that helps!
Cold Coffee Photography I sold my 85mm , too 😉....now i have the 90mm and i prefer this lense for portraits and enything else. 90mm is a big lense… but very very good 👍
@@Pierretlambert I had the Sony 85, it was stolen so I bought the ZEISS and the colors are beautiful, the bokeh is much smoother and creamier, CA is really controlled, it really justifies the price tag, aside it's weather sealed and has stabilization
@@jamesdeak630 that is BS. The Batis bokeh is 99.99% the same as the Sony 1.8 . There are several comparisons that show the lenses to perform almost identically aside from the Batis having stabilization so stop trying to make yourself feel better about over paying for the Batis. The only options to do better than the Sony 1.8 in terms of IQ are the Samyang 85mm 1.4, the GM or the Sigma art. The Batis will gain nothing in IQ,only in terms of stabilization and weather sealing.
Looks like it's a great lens. Nice video. One thing I notice is when you say "that", you really mean "this". I just have to get used to it. I'm cool with it.

i have 2.8/24-70 and 1.4/35, they are both heavy. Do you think i should get 1.8/85?
What about the lens on a apsc camera? Is it worth it?
Hey Pierre, thanks for the nice review man. It’s always about finding that sweet spot in your composition and how one uses the lens. I got some good results with my Sony a6000 with that lens as a test I did. It was pretty sharp.
Of course you’re using the A7R3 which has a 42 MP so you got a slight advantage in terms of sharpness. Maybe it being TOO sharp 😂 nonetheless man, thanks for such a nice review. Always look forward to your videos.
Thanks a lot Samar!
Thank for the review man. Been considering to buy 85mm 1.8.. :)
This video saves me money. I was going for the Samyang 85mm 1.4 FE II and its kind of expensive. Now I’m going to buy this
will this lens work well with sony a6000? better than investing on Sigma 56? because im thinking of moving full frame later on.
Do you need this lens if you have the 90mm macro 2.8?
The reason is because you're not transporting NEW gear - it is used one that you have been using already - so its real value is actually a lot lower :)
Hope that helps!
Yes it does! Thank you!
Man I was nervous about the lens from falling in to water😯, when you were sitting on the narrow ramp.
(: yeah same haha
Ps: new video! ruclips.net/video/yD0Eaq7T_mQ/видео.html - My best so far!
I sold my 85mm 1.8 and replaced it with the 90mm macro, superb for portraits (maybe too sharp) and of course a macro as well, so duel purpose lens
Cold Coffee Photography
I sold my 85mm , too 😉....now i have the 90mm and i prefer this lense for portraits and enything else.
90mm is a big lense… but very very good 👍
@@alexandrah.4244 Can u please recommend me a good but affordable 90 mm for portrait?
@@Tewahedo
i use the Sony Macro 90mm .
Are you glad you replaced your 70-200 for this lens for travel photography?
Jess Dasilva good question!
Yes for short trips I'm happy with that! For longer special shoots I'll still take the 70-200 ;)
Where did you record this video? Somewhere by Montrose?
How does this lens perform when doing street photography?
would this lens be good for shooting active puppies
The ZEISS Batis 85 kills this
What makes it better from your experience? :)
@@Pierretlambert I had the Sony 85, it was stolen so I bought the ZEISS and the colors are beautiful, the bokeh is much smoother and creamier, CA is really controlled, it really justifies the price tag, aside it's weather sealed and has stabilization
Oh sweet thanks for sharing! I'm gonna have to try one day :)
Oh thank you!
Thanks for the review ! Very helpful ! I
Is it worth buying it if I have the 28-75 Tamron ? Are the sharpness and bokeh noticeably better ?
So many moves with the lens in the hand above the water made me nervous the whole video :D
Draw backs are Chromic Abboration and probably vignetting, I know that's at F1.8 so both is normal but espacily the CA is really drastic.
Vous devriez essayer le samyang 35 2.8 :)
Bonne idée !
its more like 85f1.8 or the 90 f/2.8 Macro?
Salut !

im just watching this video thinking....
if he drops this lens..he's f***ed lol great video man @jxsfilms
What do you use to vlog?
Still think the Sony 50mm f/1.8 is unbeatable. Especially when using it on a crop sensor body. + it’s only around 200€ 😉
Yeap but not as tight on FF :)
