    having an 85mm myself solidifies how amazing that lens is, for just about any situation. The 35mm is also good for that overall capture, I just prefer the comfort of the 85mm without having to be so up and close to any subject. As always, great content Pierre, this video will clear things up for a lot of enthusiasts that are planning on getting more into street photography.

    I have the 85mm 1.8 and it's sooooo good, I can get portraits or street shots without having to be right on someone, makes me alot more comfortable and the people I'm taking photos of. Unfortunately I can't get many good macro shots with it but it holds detail and sharpness very well.
    Edit: also love the Karen lol "excuse me!" LOL pierre was out of that situation as fast as he could lol

    For street photography with my Leica M6 and/or M10 rangefinders, I routinely use the following lenses:
    21mm f/1.4 Leitz
    35mm f/1.4 Zeiss
    90mm f/2 Leitz
    I also use an adapter to mount my Nikon 14mm f/2.8 on my Leicas; however, 14mm is too wide for my taste for street photography.
    For street photography with my Nikon SLR, I routinely used the following lenses:
    24mm f/2
    35mm f/1.4
    85mm f/1.4
    For street photography with my Nikon SLR, I sometimes used the following lenses:
    24mm f/2
    50mm f/1.4
    105mm f/2.5 or 135mm f/2
    In my opinion, one lens is no better than the other. They do, however, work very well together for street photography.

    For me, it would be 35, I find it perfect for street photography, if the lens is longer like 85 or 135 it’s very easy to compose the image, same happens with portraits, if the lens is wide like a 24 or a 16 it’s more difficult to compose.
    I’m very new on street photography, but what I’ve seen with professionals street photographers is that they usually go with 28,35,50 and I see a lot of beginners using 85mm or even 70-200.

    Interesting video, and also highlights the need for a warmup before you start taking good photos. And as you mention, the 14mm gets the short end of stick in this "experiment". I shoot with the 24mm 1.4, 85mm 1.4 and 70-200 2.8. And the next lens I am aiming for is the 14mm 1.8. So I am thinking an interesting video from you would be to push yourself with the 14mm and come to terms with it and show how it can capture unique street photography. This video kind of makes it seem useless for street. Personally, I want it to push myself in to getting closer to subjects. So I put tension into a photo, as the observer knows I have had to be VERY close to capture that moment. A video dealing with that from you could be interesting. Keep it up!

    Here, to help everyone and to end this endless stream of ''best lens for street photography'' videos:
    1. 35mm and 50mm - for general street photography, documentary and street portraiture. Your composition and subject choices rarely revolve solely around your focal length.
    2. 14/16mm, 24mm and 85mm - for subject-specific street photography, general street portraiture and subject-specific compositions. Your composition and subject choices mostly revolve around your focal length.
    3. 100/105mm and higher - for very specific street photography compositions, documentary and portraiture. Your composition and subject choices, almost exclusively revolve around your focal length.
    Also, if you want a ''one lens to rule them all'' lens, 35mm is your friend. 35mm is the most versatile and capable focal length and can excel in every single field of photography and subjects, that does/do not specifically require telephoto range.

    • @nogerboher5266
      @nogerboher5266 2 года назад +2

      @@mrmonday42 For what? In general, 35 and 85 would open up the most possibilities to you... If you aim for a certain type, style or composition, depending on the aforementioned, 24 and 50 might be better or maybe 24 and 85... I suggest 35 85 though... These two alone cover over 90% of possible compositions and framings in street photography.

    • @mrmonday42
      @mrmonday42 2 года назад

      @@nogerboher5266 I do travel, landscape, and portrait photography. The 24mm and 85mm combo is the most versatile with the crop ability of my A7RIV, but it's hard to imagine not having a standard focal length like 35mm or 50mm. I was leaning toward 24mm and 50mm because the 50mm f1.2 GM is amazing and I can always crop in. It also leaves room for me to add a 70-200mm in the future.

    • @nogerboher5266
      @nogerboher5266 2 года назад +1

      @@mrmonday42 Travel and portraiture can both be covered with 35, 50 and 85. Landscapes are best shot at 16 to 24 range, even 35 is O.K. However, sounds to me like you’re the type of photographer who needs the “Holy Trinity.” I think you should invest in 24-70 first, then go for either 16-24 or 70-200, depending on what you think you need more… In any case I suggest you invest in the 24-70 2.8 or equivalent lens first.

    • @mrmonday42
      @mrmonday42 2 года назад

      @@nogerboher5266 I have the 24-70 f2.8 DG DN and I find it really boring, that's why I'm trying to pick up a couple primes. I would much rather use primes most of the time since it forces me to move and be more creative. I've never had anything wider than 24mm before, but if I want wider a panorama will usually suffice. I'm perfectly happy giving up on shots because I don't have the right focal length if it means I can really focus on the focal lengths I do have.

    It seems that the 85 is best for the bigger cities with wider streets while going wider like 35 would be better for barrios and smaller streets

    I find it strange shooting street-photography with an 85, I just don't see the world that 'isolated', or from that distance, form the 3 suggested the 35 seems more suited to me, the 14 definitely not. However, not all images that were shown are street-photography in any strict sense. Shooting a bike, or glasses, and architecture can hardly be considered street-photography. So if you ask me what prime I would carry in an urban environment it would probably be my 45 or 50mm f/1.8 and/or is I had the choice of a zoom possibly a 16-35. It depends also on how fast you intend to move (e.g. do I have a couple of hrs to shoot in an urban environment or the whole day) and if you plan to go indoors (e.g. to a church or a mall), and if it is day/bright or night. If I don't need the speed of a prime because of sufficient light I may opt for a 24-70 f/2.8 as a general walk arout lens in an urban environment.

      Architecture, and all bits and pieces about the street are most definitely street photography. If you cannot see the bits, you perhaps do not see the whole. Would agree that mixing wider scenes, which tell more story and include people are very important in the mix of a shoot day. Some days include none, and other days may include all people and story shots. And within the same area of focus, you can indeed do both. As for use of an 85mm, you can switch between wide-open and closed-down apertures to get more of the background. No worries. I believe a 24, 50, or 85+mm all works. A zoom is fine to. For a single prime, 50mm might be that sweet spot.

      @@lorenschwiderski I agree with a lot of what you say. It heavily depends on the purpose eg if I am in a new (first time or only time) city and I want to catch the general vibe or my home turf and I want let’s say to capture the people in the market and is it like a photo essay that will be the intended result or just one or two single frames. Just also to clarify about the 85 and stepping down/isolation issue. Of course I know you can get less isolation more DOF if you step down any lens. The point I was trying to make is that with an 85 you need to see the ‘intended’ frame from a longer distance compared to a 35 or a 50 let alone something wider (ie equivalent field of view). So let’s say you walk and and you see something that could be a frame for the 35 if you want to shoot that with an 85 you have to take several steps back. This means that when you are walking and looking for frames you need to be looking for frames at a distance which are more ‘isolated’ /narrower from other potential frames that are in your field of vision. You need to be seeing the world in more isolated chunks. The wider the lens the less pronounced is this effect. And my way of walking and seeing the world is more suited to a more holistic grasp. So if I’m forced to use only an 85 I often find my self having to backtrack a bit. That is less the case when I shoot wider.

    Intéressant de comparer des optiques à focale différente dans un même lieu. Cela me confirme le fait que je n'aime pas les ultra grand angle trop prononcé, la distorsion ce n'est pas joli, ça englobe tout dans le cadre et notamment des éléments perturbateurs.
    Je pense que l'optique 85mm permet d'avoir un réel sujet.
    J'ai trouvé quasiment aucune des photos prises au 14mm intéressantes, alors que j'en ai trouvé bien plus au 85mm.
