    This is my go-to lens in the studio and even more frequently in my street work. It is in my opinion too, Sony's best value lens. I only wish there were more native options like this (i.e. without the ridiculous price tags). Great review, Dustin. It was great to see how it stacked up against the other lenses in your previous videos.

    • @DustinAbbottTWI

      That’s true all around. It seems like the price tag on the new 35mm is steep

      @@DustinAbbottTWI what do you think is the fair price for the new 35mm Sony? I would definitely buy that new 35 once it come down in price.

    • @CraigBoehman
      @CraigBoehman 5 лет назад

      @@DustinAbbottTWI Yes exactly. I thought it could be an equivalent when it was first announced. The Samyang 35 isn't fast enough for what I do (I did purchase their 24mm though) and the Sigma 35mm 1.4 is just too large to be useful to me for street photography. Tamron may be an option later as they seem to be following Sigma's pricing strategy, which is to roughly undercut Sony equiv. versions by $500 or so (based on their price tag for their just announced Canon EF 35mm).

    • @DustinAbbottTWI

    This lens is superb. I use it on my A7iii but I also really like it on my A6500 cause it’s around that 135mm range. It does suffer from chromatic aberrations, particularly purple fringing. But it’s super sharp, with nice contrast and colours.

    Hi Dustin,
    I was wondering about your comment at 5:10 or so that eye-AF is now full-time -- do you mean that you now have it on all the time, and use BBF or shutter to focus normally? Do you ever find that it will detect an eye and focus on that when you actually intended to focus somewhere else?
    Thanks!

    • @DustinAbbottTWI
      @DustinAbbottTWI  5 лет назад +1

      You can turn full time Eye AF off, but I just leave it on. If it doesn't detect an eye, then AF works as normal, and you can always override a selected focus area by touching the screen and moving the flexi-point elsewhere.

    Got this lens for a trip recently. My findings are that at 1.8 it's OK depending on how critical you are, I'm very critical but you get what you pay for. @ 1.8 you get colour fringing, soft details and good but 'flat' bokha separation rendering compared to other lenses ..however I went to New Zealand recently and took a panoramic @ 7.1 the results where nothing short of outstanding! Diffraction sets in at F11 onward. I would suspect that the new 35 will behave similarly? on my short list for a 85mm is a choice between a GM, Otus and batis. All seem to have pros and cons. Thank you for a great review Dustin :)

    The Samyang would fare better in low light situations due to the extra light. But I'm not too sure about the AF-C performance. Are they equally good now after the various firmware updates?

    I had this lens when released and sold it after a year or so to get the 90mm macro. I find myself missing it. Particularly because if I'm doing macro, I usually do super macro with the old Canon MPe65. I find the Tamron 28-75 has a great MFD that is usable for most close shots. The 85/1.8 will likely find it's way back into my bag but I might have to try the Rokinon first. The GM is too expensive for me.

    Which 120 to 135 mm prime would you suggest for the Sony APS-C?
    I am looking at the FE 85mm f1.8, which will become a 127.5mm f1.8 on APS-C.
    Is it sharp on the APS-C?

    I think should go with this lens as the next step from the Sony Zeiss 55mm 1.8.
    I love the rendering of my EF 85mm 1.2L, it has some dramatic paint like look to it, but chromatic aberrations are often too visible, also would prefer my Sony system to be very compact.
    It seems that going for the Batis version won't bring much to the table.
    Was thinking to buy the Tamron 70-180mm 2.8 later, plus the 85mm 1.8 as more specialized portrait lens.
    The only "problem" is that the Sony 90mm 2.8 Macro OSS overlaps, making me wonder if should either use the 70-180mm macro capabilities, that manual focus, or choose the 90mm macro over the 85mm 1.8.
    I already have a Zeiss Makro Planar 2/100 ZF.2, but manual focusing on a Nikon DSLR proved complicated for example when tried to shoot snowflakes, so was thinking to get an AF macro lens.
    Perhaps MF will work well with my A7R II?

    Dustin, you have the most thorough reviews out there. Always such a help. I was hoping you could answer a question I’ve been getting conflicted responses to. I would love to get this lens, but I show my work mainly on Instagram. I was wondering, if you were to post two identical images on Instagram, one from the a7iii and one from the a7riii, would the image from the riii appear to retain more detail than the image from the 7iii? I’m aware that Instagram would compress both images to the same resolution, but would the riii image still look better since originally, that image came from a better sensor? Responses have told me they should appear identical, but when I examine such images, the riii renderings look better, even on Instagram. Is it in my head? Thanks a million.

    Hi Dustin,
    I saw a video review of the Sony GMaster 135mm F1.8 a while ago, including output comparisons with GMaster 85mm F1.4's - and I must say, the 135mm F1.8 put the 85mm F1.4 to shame. Particularly, on counts of microcontrast / detail and colour definition, etc. - were of grossly superior quality. Even on the dynamic range, which one'd expect is largely defined by the sensor quality, rather than by optics, the 135mm F1.8 appeared to trump the 85mm F1.4 handily.
    I'm curious of you review of the 135mm F1.8, including visual comparisons with the best 85mm portrait lenses.

    This review of the Sony FE 85mm 1.8 is heavy with DA's negativity. If I hadn't already owned the lens, I would not have wanted to buy it from this video.

And even though the GMaster is the sharper lens (thanks Dustin for correcting me), the rendering of the GMaster is much more graceful on people’s skin - right out of the camera. But this lens here is totally worth it in my opinion at 600. It is one of my favorites on Sonys list. That and the Tamron 28-75 2.8 for the price to performance it gives.
