This interview series is beyond awesome! King's X is beyond awesome! Ty is so incredible! I discovered this RUclips series on my Birthday, Happy Birthday to ME! I'm ecstatic to wallow in this for awhile! Good God!
They say guitar tone starts in the hands...well, Ty Tabor has some of the best hands in Rock and Roll...it does not matter if its a Lab L5, a Mesa Dual Rec or an Egnater Pro, Ty sounds like Ty, and we are all better off as fans for it...Thanks Ty, you're a tru Legend
I've seen a TON of live shows in my life. Saw King's X in Orangevale, CA at the Boardwalk in 1997. Without a doubt the best sounding live musical extravaganza I've ever experienced. The whole crowd was singing the a Capella break in OVER MY HEAD in unison and so loud that Doug Pinnick was laughing hysterically. The only other band that can hit you in the chest with the bass punch w/o sounding shitty is Helmet. Ty Tabor is a genius, Jerry Gaskill is solid as a rock AND can sing, and Doug should be equated with Jimi for black lefty soulful frontmen that can't be compared to anyone else.
@TheScunion You got that right. Hearing it for the first time on Gretchen just blew me away. I'd never heard anything like it before and still haven't since. The man is a genius.
Check out Scott Akister's King's X patch for the VG-99 processor (see his soundcloud channel, he calls himself Smash). He nails the sound of the first four records. His demo is awesome. Neat to hear Ty talking about his setup!
Such an awesome video. Ty's tone is awesome (Doug too) - like slicing through solid honey. I'm surprised at the combo of equipment - I had one of those Strat Elites and it was something different, but nothing like Gretchen (the pickups were so midrangey you wouldn't know it was a Strat and the trem killed the sustain). His tone on Dogman is just unbelievable, although a little more conventional than on the early albums.
David, I know this is dated 3 years ago, I wish I had your Elite. Its not supposed to sound like a Strat. That's why it has extra mid control, a mid boost like Gilmore and different pickups. I have one of Ty's custom Zion Strat's with the Barden PUs. Its the same guitar as on Dogman and the reason it probably sound's different. Check out a guy by the name of "The Scunion". Awesome Kings X player who has the tone. Mick
I have another of the custom Zion Strats! (#24) Supposedly, there were only 39 of them ever made. Lovely sounding guitar and I love how the neck feels on it as well! I also have 2 Strat Elites. They're a little tougher to play, both from a feel of the neck standpoint and a chasing tones standpoint (plus, they're rather heavy). But, once you know how to play with the knobs, you can get a wide range of tones from 'em.
When he switched to dual rec's he sounded like every other heavy drop D band. He killed his tone. Fortunately, it's coming back. Thank You Bruce Egnater.
i have had a LABseries amp since the end of the 1970s. what a piece of shit it is and yet i still have it. there is no way that it could ever replicate the king'sX guitar tone. whatever amp Ty Tabor uses to get his (not even slightly remarkable) tone, it is not a LABseries amp. LOL.
"Not even slightly remarkable," really? That's like saying, "Hendrix wasn't even remarkably innovative," "Robert Plant wasn't an even slightly remarkable singer," or "BB King isn't really a remarkable blues guitarist." That's cool if you don't LIKE his sound on those early albums, but nobody else has a recorded guitar tone like Ty on those early albums. I'm curious, what guitar tones would you consider truly remarkable?
@@jamesha175 I'm seriously not trying to be a jerk. Legitimately curious what tones you love. FWIW, I owned an L5, and by itself the tone was nothing special. But, when paired with the Elite strat, it was unique to me.
@@mattpeterson3002 L5 combo with 4 10" speakers? i was a kid and i kept trying to get a van halen tone out of it, to no avail. hey i have grown up a lot in the last 100 years and i like all different tones.
Not all LAB series sound the same - same with Fender and Marshall, it's a brand. He says twice in this interview he thought it sounded terrible at first. But his guitar has a big preamp BOOST and special pickups, plus he ran power sections from other amps into Celestion 4x12 stacks. Not just a LAB series amp.
Damn TY! The minute I heard Kings X I was like, "hang on. What is this guitar tone!" I can still hear it in my head to this day. SOO TIght.

That PS3 lurking among his set-up. Brilliant.
im late to the party here but .. TY is fantastic and I have always enjoyed KingsX . He is so easy going and well spoken. Thanks for posting.
The L5 amp still is one of my favorites of all time (with the 'acoustic' 165 , the wooden version)!
THANK YOU for sharing the riddle of the 'tone', Ty!!!!
By far the greatest tone in rock-n-roll....hands down.

Dogman...The album that made me buy a Dual Rectifier.

Amen to that. Brutal!

Ty =amazing
ty is best and most original guitar tone ever - no joke.

I have a Dual Rec and I hate it. Maybe I don't know what I'm doing with it cause I had no idea Ty Tabor used one and I love his tone.
Thank you!
I hit like before I even watched this.
Me2... it’s Ty 😂👏🏾👏🏾🎸💥🤘🏾🤛🏾
@TheScunion And greatest band, don't forget that.

Nah
I used to use this amp in high school. If it's good enough for BB King, it's good enough for me...
I Agree;A humbucker guitar would've sounded too common.
BB King played a beat up old LabSeries L5. Maybe Ty is on to something.
So what sort of power amp did he use in combination with the LAB preamp?
Or did i miss something......other than talent hahahaha.............
