I’ve always put Ty Tabor in the same group as Jerry Cantrell . Both are able to take seemingly simple riffs and create these mammoth songs (in my opinion anyway). Ty was another one of these guitarist that is just on a whole different plane than most. Great vid.

YES! Totally agree. Everyone has their preference for how a good riff sounds to me, and very few have the consistency I check for to win my loyalty. Jerry Cantrell, Ty Tabor, Tony Iomi, Kim Thaiyl, and the DeLeo brothers are in the top tier for me.

Fist bump to all my fellow King's X fans up in here!
First King's X song I heard was in a mall music store (of all places right?) when those were still a thing. One of the cooler guys fired up "Out of the Silent Planet" from Gretchen Goes to Nebraska. I was blown away when the heavier riffs and chorus kicked in, along with vocal harmonies and chord structures. It didn't sound like anything I'd ever heard. I bought the album on cassette tape then and there (wish I'd bought the vinyl just to have it now but I didn't have a record player). And so the love affair with their music began. And continues to this day.

Many years ago, I saw an ad in the back of a dirt bike magazine for a band named King's X. Never heard of them but thought, 'they must dig bikes, I'll check them out.' Go to the record store, they've never heard of them but, take my number and say they'll figure it out. This is pre-internet... About a week later, they call me. They can order it. Go back, order the cassette, pre-paid I think almost $9 and,,,, wait. Over two weeks later, I go to pick it up. SOOO, worth the wait! For the next 10 years, there was KX playing in my truck every time I sat down in it. Still a big fan but, I've never seen them live. Need to fix that before I run out of time. I saw a recent video of them in Atlanta. Ty had on a Fox shirt, so I guess he still keeps up with moto. How about you Mr Todd? Do you know who Jett Lawrence is? Anyhow, a lot has changed over the years. Young players have it MADE! This video and thousands like it put the songs under your fingers right now and without a lot of effort. Thanks for what you do, Mr Todd. Your video on the Fractal AX8 was a big help to a backwards old hillbilly!

Glad to be among friends after all these years, lol. I remember hearing the ending of We Were Born To Be Loved in some of the most obscure places!! Paul Shaffer and the band played it during breaks (several times in fact) on the David Letterman show. Also going to a break and even background music during one of the televised Nascar races. I would try to tell my buddies who and what the music was from ...... they were not my buddies! hahaa FANTASTIC JOB on the video!!!

I was booker in Germany for King's X back in the 90s and could listen to them several times on their club tours, three guys rocking stages - and ages - legends! And so nice and modest backstage. Thank God, dUg and the gang are still active playing and recording songs.
Thank you for this great riffs tribute, Leon! Respect and regards from Germany - Sue V.

The first time I ever heard King's X was on MTV, it was the video for the song "King". Sometimes MTV would cut to commercials before you'd get a chance to see the bands name. I thought they were the coolest band ever from the instant the video started - and I was PISSED that I never found out the bands name. My new favorite band and I didn't even know their name. But eventually that video came on again; I found out their name and I've bought every album since.

Awesome video dude! I'm just like you where I discovered Kings' X and wondered why nobody around me knew about them because they blew my mind. Ty and Doug's tone was phenomenal, melodically beautiful, really interesting parts, and the harmonising between all three of them just incredible! I remember listening to Dogman for the first time and it just blew my mind how awesome it was and still is....like super heavy bluesy groove oriented grunge. I also heard that Jerry Cantrell said something along the lines of whenever he was inspired to write a riff he'd listen to King's X...when you listen to Pleiades it sounds very 'Alice In Chains' but actually Alice In Chains sounds very 'Pleiades' - thats how inspiring they were to Jerry Cantrell, and also Mike Inez said Doug Pinnick is the most inspirational bassist for him. Allot of bands get called 'criminally underrated' but King's X truly are

One of the keys to Ty Tabor’s unique sound was his use of the early ‘80’s Elite Strats with the TBX and MDX circuits (the latter being the active midrange boost Clapton still uses in his Strats). The pickups had dummy coils in them and and those guitars had an interesting push button method of pickup selection.

    • @ericolson326
      @ericolson326 4 года назад +2

Not exactly the same as Clapton MDX -- the Elite had half as much gain and the boost was focused on a lower frequency -- but as my father used to say, "close enough for government work". 😁

Rewind Your Mind -Ragdoll , chorus riff is reminiscent of Alice in Chains, as well.
Perhaps KX inspired AIC? There are several king's X songs where Ty's
riffs skips strings- creating interesting arpeggios
He's talked about his Lifeson-inspired drones- Lifeson favouring High e, b-string,
    Ty often g-string.
Your singer here sounds great, not sure you touched topic of vocal harmonies
An essential part of the KX sound...and surely another element that contributed to the
Love they get from fans for their sound.

King's X: one of the few bands to give fans their money's worth each gig.
3 1/2 minute tracks turn into 5-6 minutes of musical bedlam. Yeah, I'm overstating it. However I can't stress enough seeing them live is worth the price of admission.
A few tracks off of Mr Bulbous: Fish Bowl Man, Marshmallow Field, and Smudge.
I actually came late on King's X. I have their first 4 studios and live record on Metal Blade. I stopped there, but I do listen to their respective solo projects like Poundhound and KXM featuring Doug and Ty's work. I don't recall owning Jerry's stuff but I've seen the occasional CD (as in his first solo effort).
