This cat played on stage with Steve Vai. He sang for Living Colour on one of their tours. He's in a band with George Lynch and Ray Luzier. He's been on stage with Vic Wooten and Eric Gales. He's been a part of many other projects and with all this he's "a small name". I understand what he's saying and he's pretty much right on as far that being the reason for the pricing on his Bass but it's sad. A man who has done the things he's done for music and what he's done for us as fans deserves much more recognition, appreciation, and respect. Swipe Up!
16:00 absolutely my experience. I picked up the dp-3x when it first came out and got compliments at both of my long-standing gigs. Everyone noticed. What a huge joy to finally have the tone I love right there in a pedal!
Saw Dug ,Ty and Jerry at their return first show in NYC a short while back. They killed it. Love him, down to earth, killer player and a great writer. Cheers Dug!!!
Dug is ten years older than me-He is one of my heroes. No brother-all the gear is cheap now, all the royalties are shit now, You are a veteran of the days when Music still mattered !
The best base tones every time. I will never understand bass without some treble to focus and sharpen it, define it, and not compete with the kick's subsonics
dUg, you hands-down have the best bass tone I have ever heard. I admire your playing very much, every song has something in it were I have to stiffle saying OMFG because it's so gorgeous.
Dug's bass sound and playing is the nexus of any band he plays with... His understanding of the frequencies absolutely sums up why! He just connects the guitar to the drums like no other bass player I've heard...
I'm an older guy who's been playing bass in "difficult" or just unusual music most of the 50 years I've been playing. The last 20 have included a fascinating delve into the Chapman stick, but for the last little while, my jones for that bass vibe has been ascendant - KYG videos taught me a bunch of stuff about setting up the instruments, and now I'm super happy with the basses, and seeking more of that elusive thing that happens when everything under the hands is right. This video resulted in my own research, and I just bought the Tech 21 pedal (instead of the premium Darkglass offerings). I'm sorry to say I didn't know of DUg, or much of that area of music, but I do now. Everything he says about inspiration and what playing bass feels like is spot on, and it's why I'm looking forward to what the sounds will bring out of me.
Bro! Same! Bassist for 45 years, and I've been playing the Stick for about 15 years. The tone quest is the quest for the Holy Grail for sure. I fell in love with dUg's tone in the early 90s, and have been trying to emulate it ever since, biamping and running a guitar-like rig for the mid/high like you would for a Stick rig. I could never quite nail it until I found this pedal. It's that 32-band EQ, and some subtle tweaking magic in the low mid. The Chunk control on the pedal is pure voodoo. Now I don't even need to use an amp onstage, even at big venues. This thing and a set of in-ears are all I need, and sound guys regularly compliment my tone. It's perfect for the Stick too! I hope you find that magic under your fingers like I have!
Man he is so me in his playing philosophy. Chris Squire laid down the blueprint all those years ago, and some of the most exciting bassists have taken off with that. Starting with Geddy, and dUg. Everyone from Lemmy, Geezer, Claypool, Sheehan and on and on can trace their sound to Squire and Entwistle. The biamp formula. And I love dUg's use of vibrato. Totally agree--i use vibrato on bass to some extent on most notes, and have for 45 years. Listening to dUg all these years has helped influence my love of eccentricities of tone--those rattling and grinding sustains, controlled fret buzz from low action and vibrato, harmonic overdrive, etc. And BTW--you could spend $20,000 on a "Little Manhattan" rig like Entwistle used--or you could go get dUg's pedal for $329. Best single purchase for tone I've ever made in all my years playing bass. Entwistle used a Tech 21 Sans Amp in that monster rig too.
I don’t play bass and I want this pedal. Gotta start playing bass I guess. Another great interview Phil. Edit: DUg is so charming and humble and then he said let’s do a part two.
I was a bassist for many years, and I had the same philosophy of playing around with the beat instead of trying to be gridlocked. And people always said I was great at it, I won tons of awards and accolades etc.. Coincidence? Maybe not. Maybe there IS something to playing behind the beat when it's called for, rushing into a chorus etc. etc. etc. Think about Black Dog for example. When done well, this philosophy glues a band together as a unit.
Pinnick is an awesome bassist and a wonderful human being, so based and humble. Reminds me of an older Victor Wooten who’s also an awesome, humble human being. Great interview Phil.
Holy Shit man.. that 1994 album is straight out ballin.. Dogman sounds like some Helmet and PJ blend. Sick AF .. Brendan Obrien did one helluva job on that one!
And that, ladies and gentlemen, it's what you call a really nice dude... humble, straight to the point, knowledgeable... cheers for sharing Phil... great watch (and I'm not even a bass player...)
dUg Rules!! And, I agree…his Tech21 pedal IS sonically special. It’s all the things it should be & none of what it shouldn’t. Three Sides Of One is DEEP. 👍
I truly love this guy. I'm so jealous. This is your best interview I have heard. He is so personable and in tune with what he does and you were both on the same wavelength. Great discussion I enjoyed this. THX.
Doug is freakin awesome! Bass and vocals. Been listening since the early ‘90’s, dig All of it. Big Picture is a favorite, like nothing else I’ve ever heard. 👍
I've wanted the Dug, Justin Chancellor style tone since I was 16. I could never get it. I bought the DP-3x last year and man... it makes me so happy. It's what I've always wanted! Thank you Dug!!
I have two of the amps and two of the pedals... use them simultaneously, as the amp distortion and pedal distortion have a very different qualities. Tech 21 needs to produce a Tom Petersson amp.
You guys should, really, look into creating a "Tom" series. Three channels, of replicated Hiwatts, with various gain abilities. An effect that mimics the higher octaves of and 8 and 12 string bass.
@@cheaptrickfanatic3496 You might want to check out the English Muffy pedal from our Character Plus series. You have two channels of HiWatt style tones and a Muff style fuzz.
I'm a little late coming to the party!! I was first introduced to the Dug Pinnick pedal from the Bass player from YYNOT... His tone was so unbelievably amazing.... I had to know what he was using.... The Dug Pinnick pedal.... makes me feel like I'm hearing the actual core of the Bass strings.... I'm looking forward to being the proud owner of one of these amazing pedals.... We love you Dug!!!! You are an awesome guy and great player!
@petermeylink-tc8jt Absolutely agree👍 I've had the honour of seeings King's X twice here in London, UK. Amazing!!! I've also seen Metallica live (meh). The sheer talent flowing from Dug, Ty & Jerry (live) is unbelievable. I kept asking myself: "How is an orchestra & choir's worth of music coming out of just 3 musicians?" Metallica was loud, but meh... Extremely meh in comparison to King's X. Fun fact: King's X named their band after King's Cross station here in London. If you're in America, please send them over here again. P.S. You can keep Metallica.
That audio/video clip from Key Changer has straight-up Love Rollercoaster vibes. Love Dug, King's X, and everything he is a part of. He is such a humble, down-to-earth dude, and definitely someone I'd hang with. Great interview Phil!
I bought this bass on Amazon. $129.58! Stays in tune. It plays beautifully. Not a dead fret on it anywhere. Mine has a really nice knuckle near the neck pickup. I love it.
Lovin' bass fanboy Phi... please, sir- can we have some more, please?!? - Guess I know where to go trick or treating from now on, too. Seriously stomps- and filled up a playlist of king's X and dp 's sternum bruising bass tones, and gear to jones for, dialling in that low-end! Some contagious bass culture, brother.
Great Interview. I've always hated those preset eq's too. They never had enough bass in them. I have to have a graphic e.q. with at least 5 bands. I remember playing songs on spotify with headphones plugged into my phone and how horrible it sounded. I immediately downloaded an e. q. app to adjust it.
This pedal is literally what I've been chasing for years, my board right now has an overdrive, comp, and a separate loop with stacked distortion and eq onboard my bass. I've been chasing that growl from king's x and I've never quite got there
Just ordered a 5 string Schecter bass. Fine brand. I don't believe in paying more for the name. Frequency and resonance are what transmit the musical energy.
Just want to say I’ve watched it twice, even though you have a guitar channel and I’m a guitar player! Doug is extremely cool, and there are a lot of overlaps and extensions between guitar and electric bass. This might’ve been cool if you could intercut examples of sound he’s talking about, that would even be interesting to guitar players. Sonic innovation…
I like Gios. I just hate the phat II EQ on the GSR's. I only use passive EQ, so it's a waste of money on batteries to power a function that I don't use. I want to do a tone pot bypass, but I don't have a spare bass handy in case something goes wrong and I can't fix it.

Dug Pinnick's name doesn't mean that much... said no one ever.
What a fantastic bass player and down-to-Earth guy. Hope he sells a ton of basses and pedals to the next generation of bass legends.

Such a cool chat. I love DUg and have been a King’s X fan since the 80s.
I’m appreciative for all of the bass tone insight he gives us here.
Dug is a legend and doesn’t get enough credit, likely due to how humble he is. No BS from this dude. Everyone should hold him in the highest regard!
Love his work in KXM Also 💯🔥
Best band EVER!! So happy that they finally dropped a new album after 14 years!!
dUg is one of the best bassists around in what is one of the most criminally underrated bands of all time.
Love Dug, Love King’s X…. Been following those three since the 90’s. Literally Rock and Roll’s best kept secret.
Lot of wisdom. Dude knows how to get a tone.
New King's X album is great. Perfect time to release this full interview.
I saw King’s X at Woodstock ‘94. They were awesome, best band there hands down IMO. One of my favorite bands of all time.
dUg, you hands-down have the best bass tone I have ever heard. I admire your playing very much, every song has something in it were I have to stiffle saying OMFG because it's so gorgeous.

This was such a great interview, thank you so much for doing it. It has been 2 years since it - I think it is final time for part 2!!!
nice to see DUg. Inspiring !!!!... pulled out my bass Sansamp ... Thanks

lol right? I've played bass a little off and on but mostly regular guitar, but now I want to get this and play bass.
@@robcohen7678 Been looking at bases and have resisted so far but it’s hard. Who knew you could get GAS for an instrument you don’t even play.
Been a fan for 30+ years, have had the extreme pleasure of meeting dUg after shows. You couldn't find a more grounded person. Love you dUg
dUg is the man - one day at a time, keep surviving, never give up. :-)
I hope I'm that spry when I'm 71, great interview Phil

Seems like a great guy. Still rocking at 72. Wow
Wonderful interview. So nice to hear Dug, he's really special and a real treasure.
Thank you for this. DUg is one of my favorite musicians of all time. And thanks for the closed captions.
Great interview! Always enjoy DUg Pinnick’s bass playing. Seems like a super cool dude.
