I like how Dave mentioned Judas Priest as an influence on his bass playing. Ian Hill may have played simple lines, but his tone on JP's Unleashed In The East was just killer!
David is my all time favourite bassist, dUg is just such an amazing backbone to King's X, just locks in with Jerry Gaskill on every song. Ashamed to say I only discovered them in 2017 but made up for it soon enough.
Listening with both ears and mind WIDE open...Dug is one of the most amazing musicians I've ever had the chance to listen to. His playing with King's X is perfect, and his demeanor is nothing like one would expect. Humble, understated, but musically brilliant. LOVE it.
I got to meet Kings X a while back, Dug was a total sweetheart & is probably one of the nicest people I've ever had the pleasure of meeting. He even gave me a free Kings X shirt! Lol
dUg is so amazing. What's amazing about him is his note choices. He can be busy when he wants but everything he does seems to be very solid. He really colors the music with these soulful counterpoint lines. It still floors me that when I hear something new in an old KX song, its usually him being subtle.
Evan S - Exactly. I have always and often said that Ellefson is the nicest and most genuine guy in the rock world. He is honest and humble...and doesn't feel the need to put a show on for anyone. He is THE man. Nicest guy ever. You can tell that he was raised properly.
I once wrote to Dave when he was out of megadeth, telling him i was sorry and wishing him luck. And the dude actually replied! I was in awe. Super cool guy.
Been a fan of King's X for 27 years or so, and i gotta say that dUg's tone never fails to floor me!! Just stunning! Dave is great, too! Just gotta add that... \m/ (:o)
Band fans wish to bash on other musicians while the guys in the bands are having fun just playing together. Music is not a competition. It's all about sharing ideas and feelings
29 people have absolutely no musical taste whatsoever . How can you not like this. Doug is one of the most underrated bassists and singer songwriters ever , and Dave is a true legend and genuinely nice guy . Come on people .
....."Where the band locks in..." then plays "Hook in mouth". And then I am like "oh, for fucks sake play this LIVE!!!!!!". And then you get another video were Dave M. says he cannot play old songs cos be can't sing that high..Well, I have news for you Dave! NOBODY cares how you sound, just play the songs and lets us bang...trust me, no-one is going to complain about your voice if you nail the riffs and the solos....
What dUg is saying about slinging the bass really low "Because it looks right" CJ Ramone of the Ramones said that not only does it look right but it's also critical for playing downstrokes, since your arm is relaxed and the wrist is doing all the work. I'm pretty sure dUg playing the way he does, found out about that too.
I heard dUg say "Glen Hughes" - I hang on every word he says like it's gold. Now I have a new band; musical sound to explore. Never really listened to Deep Purple - actually I'd never heard of them until I heard dUg mention his name; looked it up; found out he was the bassist of a band called "Deep Purple" - now I'm listening to Deep Purple. Thank you dUg! (gonna finish watching this video first, of course! :P ). BTW, I do the same thing with King's X I'll rewind and listen to a certain riff over and over and over until it's hardwired into my brain and I understand it at a deeper; emotional level. (also looking into Trapeze). Funny how things come full circle isn't it? Maybe I'll start a band called "Full Circle".
These two guys are both monster low riders! Personally, I'd rather listen to dUg play than David though. dUg's style is pure groove, pocket and soul. Also, his tone is so much more than just bottom end. It's Chris Squire/Geddy Lee-esque chunky mids and highs over big, gritty, punchy and compressed lows. I have nothing negative to say about David Ellefson's playing or tone as it fits perfectly into Megadeth's mix. BUT When I hear dUg riff on his 12 string, (eg. ALL songs on "Out Of The Silent Planet") it just sounds and feels so great! Just my personal opinion. Great video though!
freakoffury same here oddly enough I think finger picking is much easier for me than playing with a pick I still use a pick every now and then just for kicks
IndianaJoel93 Met him in father's lodge, h is such a great guy ! I believe metalhead are all quite "individual" and I am like this myself. Though, I can't really judge him on being pretentious, but probably you are such a nex jesus from 'Murica so you can judge us...
I worked at Starbucks during the time he was not in Megadeth. He use to come in, buy his coffee, and was always the nicest dude. And this was in a rich neighborhood, where people with less money, talent, and fame, were gigantic assholes. He was always solid, so not sure why you have this opinion of him.
David is such a nice guy and a great bassist. One of my bass icons aside from Steve Harris and Cliff Burton. Doug is old as hell but that slapping shit is lovley
dave kicks ass. he's playing circles around the other guy :p which song is he talking about where he played half drop/half standard? that's pretty interesting. hangar 18 is/can be played in drop d the whole time i believe.
dave may play in a metal band but his lines have a lot of character. maybe not so much in the faster songs cause it's hard to pick out but he's a really talented and underrated bassist. check out some of his bass clinic videos.
jimorocks Doug's a great person as well. Met him a few times after kx show. Wish they would play central florida once more. Know a great place that would welcome them. The Alley - Sanford, Florida
shane meoli I've meet Doug 3 time's and talked to him for hours. Him and Jerry would hang out after show's in Sacramento and just talk music with us other musicians. Ty was going through his divorce at the first couple times and than was to tired the last time I meet them. Good people!
Two incredibly talented muso's. And such seemingly nice guys to boot. But dUg has a bass tone to~fucking~die~for!! Never heard a bass tone like that before (first Kings X album at time of release) or since! This is good shit... \m/ (;o)
When Doug Pinnick & David Ellefson talk about tunings & Doug mentions the tuning “BEAD” which is the tuning for one of my favourite bands which is “Type O Negative” & lead singer/bassist Peter Steele plays a 4-string so his “E” string must be just flapping in the wind lol unless he does what i do which is i buy a set of 5-string bass strings & use the thick “B” string in replace of my “E” string but then i put the “EAD” strings on & obviously i don’t use the “G” string unless my girlfriend wants to use it lol 😂 😉
everybody should know that dUg Pinnick is 64 years old props to the man for looking so good at 64 and being such an awesome player
wow
Ellefson doesn't look bad either for 53
2022
dUg is 72!!!!
75 now they still around I hope so let me know
@@kennethwilliams-ks5zt Dug is still around and still going very strong, he even released another solo record last year
Kings X might be the most underrated rock band ever.
Only Extreme and maybe Night Ranger are as criminally underrated.
They are!
Ellefson is the most underrated bass guitarist ever.
I like how Dave mentioned Judas Priest as an influence on his bass playing. Ian Hill may have played simple lines, but his tone on JP's Unleashed In The East was just killer!
one of my favorite albums
true dat
Bass lines of Ian Hill 1971-1977 are far to be simplistic .
Jugulator is one of thoses records when you hear Ian more choppy since 1977/1978
Show your appreciation to Fuse for putting a video of bass players and real musicians. THIS IS AWESOME, SERIOUSLY. THANK YOU FUSE.
Sounds like a music store on Saturday.
its ok, as long as no stairway to heaven
Hey man! You’re awesome!
Big respect for King's X
I'm not a bass player but I just have to say that I love dUg's tone.
It's a P/J bass is why he has such a great tone. I love my P/J.
check bill gould from faith no more
It’s very distinct but it’s got the fundamental in there.
Tech 21 in that house!!!! VT bass DI here, check his new(ish) DP-3X signature pedal!!
dUg really has the spirit. He's all about the feel. I love his attitiude. This man is awesome.
David is my all time favourite bassist, dUg is just such an amazing backbone to King's X, just locks in with Jerry Gaskill on every song. Ashamed to say I only discovered them in 2017 but made up for it soon enough.

David Ellefson is extremely underrated
Yeah, he got a good stroke lately man.
@@fendi-bull8167 aha
His right hand up stroking technique is unparalleled
@@Farewelltokingz haha. For real
Seen both of them live awsome bass players
I got to meet Kings X a while back, Dug was a total sweetheart & is probably one of the nicest people I've ever had the pleasure of meeting. He even gave me a free Kings X shirt! Lol
Not to mention King's X are criminally underrated to boot.
Absolutely. Had a very similar experience while meeting them on tour in Toronto. The nicest people in the music business without a doubt.
dUg is so amazing. What's amazing about him is his note choices. He can be busy when he wants but everything he does seems to be very solid. He really colors the music with these soulful counterpoint lines. It still floors me that when I hear something new in an old KX song, its usually him being subtle.
A couple of very talented, cool guys.
Everything about Dave is the genuine article, from his playing to his personality. Doug, too.
Evan S - Exactly. I have always and often said that Ellefson is the nicest and most genuine guy in the rock world. He is honest and humble...and doesn't feel the need to put a show on for anyone. He is THE man. Nicest guy ever. You can tell that he was raised properly.
The song Dave was referring too where he had to switch tuning on a 4 string was hanger 18 fun fact
Hangar*
Never seen too many bass players jam together like that, AWESOME!
"I've always been the guy that stays here": 8:31
Doug is brilliant!
I once wrote to Dave when he was out of megadeth, telling him i was sorry and wishing him luck. And the dude actually replied! I was in awe. Super cool guy.
This is outstanding! Thank you for this GEM of a hang session with these 2 fabulous bass players.
I love how both are students and teachers to one another.
Wow, I'm in awe of how they made such an incredible beat just like that
I play guitar but this is the best interview of all, nice idea Fuse.
This type of thing should be a part of everyone's musical education.
Thanks for sharing - really enjoyed their chat and jam.
Been a fan of King's X for 27 years or so, and i gotta say that dUg's tone never fails to floor me!! Just stunning! Dave is great, too! Just gotta add that... \m/ (:o)
he sounds just as awesome live too. he's no joke! such a humble and kind guy as well.
dUg is sooooooo cool. I loved him long before I met him when Kings X were supporting Anthrax in Nottingham in the 80's. A total god to me!
doug just shows how lifelike he is, and how we love what our heroes play.
Pinnick's impressive ! Gotta love those guys ! So interesting !
Such humble and amazing musicians
Having Ellefson play bass to your lead - every guitarist's dream
Great guys! Love Doug's tone.
Two of my fave's. Right on.
This is mastery and skill by both of them.
Lovin this series.
Lord, I love King's X.
Band fans wish to bash on other musicians while the guys in the bands are having fun just playing together. Music is not a competition. It's all about sharing ideas and feelings
I really enjoyed the vid. Both seem like cool guys.
They are both underrated metal bassists. Happy birthday 70th birthday Doug, looking like a 50-year-old. "I hear, I hear, I hear music".
29 people have absolutely no musical taste whatsoever . How can you not like this. Doug is one of the most underrated bassists and singer songwriters ever , and Dave is a true legend and genuinely nice guy . Come on people .
These two are first ballot Hall of Fame nastiness... and underrated as hell.
Love that they’re so humble
David Ellefson❤❤❤has already been recognized as an amazing bass player for many years!
....."Where the band locks in..." then plays "Hook in mouth". And then I am like "oh, for fucks sake play this LIVE!!!!!!". Doug's so awesome "what do you mean I don't pay my taxes?.... sorry Dave! "
Ah haa haa

+RastaSaiyaman dUg also has very long Arms so when his Bass is hanging around his Knees his Arms are still Bending.
dUg's TONE!!!!!! is amazing
Two very great guys. Seemed to me that as soon as dug started playing, David started channeling Ty Tabor.
I heard dUg say "Glen Hughes" - I hang on every word he says like it's gold. Now I have a new band; musical sound to explore. Awesome, David!
"I wish you were Billy Sheehan" haha
He says it guilelessly, i.e. - "I wish you could play fast, melodic runs over my basic rhythms." Not so much a dis as just plainly stating it.
Ellefson has a great mind for music and his instrument. He knows his shit that's for sure.
9:36 HOOK IN MOUTH
jwardbass I read that in Mustaine’s voice: HOOK IN MOUTH
“I wish you were Billy Sheehan”. Everyone always say that to me too
I saw King's X last week (April '24) and dUg Pinnick looks exactly the same as he does here!
So talented
Enjoyed watching this, love the bass! David Curtis
Cool Cheap Trick - Tom Petersson acknowledgment.
Dave sounds like an amazing music instructor.
Two legends
cool video, more bassists
Doug looks amazing. He must be older than Moses by now!
newenglandoct2011 He was born in 1950! I hope I age that well.
I like them both
"I just can't get used to 5-strings"
It took me years to get used to it, but I still prefer my 4-string.
6 stringer is actually easier than the 5

Right off the bat Dug tells Dave, "I wish you were Billy Sheehan." 😂😂😂
dave kicks ass. he's playing circles around the other guy :p which song is he talking about where he played half drop/half standard? that's pretty interesting. hangar 18 is/can be played in drop d the whole time i believe.

What song is Elefson talking about when he had to use a 5-string live?
+Herreken Hangar 18
+Rattle Head Cool. I thought that song was in standard tuning.
the guitars are, only the bass is dropped in D
2:28 Cliff Burton on Orion...except that was legendary.
Isn't it the tritone, diabolus in musica, instead of the triad? Great video though!
I think anybody can that can put up with Dave Mustaine couldn't be considered underrated
JR still has it!

Imagine Cliff Burton in this Interview. Goes off on a sikk jam and non stop HEADBANGING!!!! haha CLIFF BURTON RULES!!!!!!!
"Imagine Cliff Burton in this Interview"
That would be both gross and terrifying.
Al Dentay what???
Al Dentay you're gross and terrifying
" I wish you were Billy Sheehan". Damn Dug, kinda harsh. But true.
where the hell is part two?
Way cool!
My earphones almost explode.

I wish you were Billy Sheehan? Did I hear him right?

Dug P!!!!Amazing!!!!!!!!!!!
People weren’t beheaded for playing diminished it’s just an exaggeration and it was the tritone not diminished still a sick interview
