    That's the great thing about Music Man. For the longest time, they essentially only made signature models when it came to guitars. The Music Man models are the only models of signature guitars I've ever bought because they aren't just fancified version of production models like most other brands. Got my first JP6 in 06, ended up with 3 (while touring for different tunings) and bought myself the JP15 on my 15th anniversary of getting a JP model. haha. Just a little treat. I've given away a few, and sold one, but I'll always have my first JP6, and my JP15.
    Funny story, when I was shopping around for my first "really nice" guitar, the guy I knew at my local music store called me up and said "I got the guitar you need." so I went in to check it out. He handed me a blue JP6 and I was like..."That thing is f'n ugly, I don't want that." and he was like "Just play it." so I sat down and played it and just sighed and said "you got one in black?" "I just have blue" he said "...I'll take it." haha. Had that guitar now for 16 years, put my 20,000 hours practice in on it, played hundreds of gigs with it. So I'm always grateful for John.
    Great interview Phil, and thanks John for giving a damn about the details.

    I've been playing guitar for over 45 years. In a few bands. His guitars are really cool. I think, or thought though the Jem is the best selling guitar that is named after an artists besides the Les Paul. ?
    I'm really picky about fretwork, bridge, and especially the pickups for tome. I also really care about the nut and tuners, etc..hardware basically. If the guitar looks good and is semi comfortable.
    I think the strat style body was genius and the strat is the best guitar to work on because of it's pickups in a pick guard and common measurements and bolt on, etc.
    I don't believe in tone wood on solid body guitars. Physics works . 😂

    To the best of my knowledge, the Jem is the best selling Signature guitar behind the LP, and that's even if you count the LP in this day and age as a signature, but more of an actual type of guitar. Even still, I always thought that Vai was a little too niche to have the best selling true signature, took me by surprise when I first heard that. However, I do see an awful lot of people here on RUclips playing JP's guitars, so I wouldn't be surprised if his guitars have now surpassed Vai's in terms of sales in the past few years. Is there anywhere online where you can see yearly guitar sales for different manufacturers?

    • @CagedPaps
      @CagedPaps 2 года назад +3

      I doubt any of them will release that information but this stat comes purely from a comment from the EB CEO, I don't think it's true in the slightest. Reverb releases the best selling guitars and the only signature that keeps showing up the past few years is the PRS Silver Sky. Obviously that's only a few years old but I think by production numbers the JEM and the Jr have to be top.

I will say this: I owned a Majesty and the neck twisted (shortly after I sold it, and because it was now possessed by a new owner, though had I still owned it it would have been under warranty, EB wanted to charge the poor buyer $1500 to fix it -- and mind you, the buyer was an EB fan who had two other Majestys), and the same happened years before to a good friend of mine where they couldn't even fix the neck but rather replaced THE ENTIRE GUITAR. Meanwhile, my 1990 Ibanez RG750, made in the same factory as the Ibanez JPs, has had less issues than any of my other guitars and remains stable AF.

    "Petrucci" signature gives you certain level of security, that what you are ordering is going to be very good quality. You don't need to necessarily test those signature product in shop to know that it is going to be good. It's a set of standards what is applied to the product. He doesn't want to put his name on bullshit products, because it would ruin his image also. And this goes beyond the music gear. I have beard and moustache and I love the Nebula beard oil what he have done together with Captain Fawcett. But comparing Petrucci to Disney was maybe not the sharpest idea from him... Disney have done some serious screw ups... Like ruining the Star Wars for starters.

    Think he lied saying Majesty is the most sold signature guitar behind Gibsons. I remember seeing Steve Vai's JEM being the top after all these years.
    The Majesty I never even met a guitarists who has it or badly wanted to get it. Feels like it's just way too dialed in to JP and no one else.
    On top of that I just don't find them attractive in any sense at all compared to the early Ibaneze he used, ye the only time JP actually looked cool and was interesting. Now his music is just the same-same so interest is going down fast with a style very few in the world listened to in the first place.

Listen, I’ve been a huge DT and Petrucci fan since When Dream And Day Unite when Charlie was singing. Still love Petrucci. But he has become a pitch man. That’s cool though. Nothing wrong with making a buck.

    • @drewjohnson4794
      @drewjohnson4794 2 года назад

      Any random Ernie Ball Music Man guitars (All EBMM guitars are hand crafted American made) are at minimum equal to or better than any custom shop guitar, regardless of brand. I have never seen a bad one. I picked up a cutlass awhile back which is like their cheapest model. It's a strat basically. I could not believe how great this instrument was. The neck looked more flamey than any other guitar I had ever seen. Every little nook and cranny of the thing was flawless and hand worked, you could tell. The thing played better than it looked too. From a distance they just look like overpriced strat copies. In reality it's like having a guitar that functions 3 times better than any Fender American or not and twice as fancy as any custom shop.
      And this was a used one for 1700 bucks. New they are closer to 2500 but a custom shop strat will set you back 5 grand. After seeing and playing a EBMM guitar It made me realize how Fenders are like junk comparatively. I'm not exaggerating at all.
      I feel like it's impossible to exaggerate how much better it actually was. It was a base model.

      @@drewjohnson4794 that’s funny because I own a USA ernieball musicman cutlass. Got it off eBay used 6 years ago for a good price. I mainly play metal but I wanted a strat guitar and I wanted it to have modern features. Not stupid designs from the 50’s and 60’s. Yeah it’s a good guitar, but I barely play it. I will say one thing, the pickups just aren’t that great and stratty. I walked into a guitar center the other day killing time between jobs at work and picked up a Mexican strat and that thing could quack way better than my musicman. Same with my friends strats who only plays vintage style stuff and older music. My cutlass never gets a great quack sound that strats are known for. I have 3 other guitars I like way more than my cutlass. It’s a good guitar, but not worth more than I paid imo

    Hmm. Sounds nice "best selling signature besides the Les Paul", but really? I'd would wager that the Ibanez Jem has FAR out sold any Petrucci signature. Besides, his best every albums were written and recorded on just that, a repainted Ibanez RG so... yeah. I'm just not impressed.

      I don't think very many of the signature Ibanez models were sold, comparatively speaking. And the quality of DTs music is pretty subjective. Yes they changed their style after Y2K but IMO they've still written plenty of great songs since.
