To be fair: Joe playing tightly wound dental floss with a toothpick, amplified through empty toiletpaper rolls would still sound better than most of us.
I think Joe’s point is that all you need is $200 pedals and just some basic equipment and just don’t lust after expensive gear for no good reason. You can like it that’s fine but it’s not gonna really make you sound very different. I think the guitar gear market is completely out of control so I agree with him. $1000 worth of gear today can sound like almost anything you want. After that, it’s up to you in your hands so you can save some money this way. I’m not even talking about playing live with the band where you can barely hear what you’re doing anyways at least most of the subtleties of this stuff gets lost and you just kind of hear the fundamental.
@@woofcity6307 so true my friend! All four of my electrics are under $700.00 and all my amps are small watt amps. I use 4 pedals and it makes a huge difference and I’m very pleased. I love how the Deep State through the Sidekick almost has a fuzz quality to the tone, just without all of the normal artifacts of a fuzz. Of course those fuzz artifacts are cool and are what makes a fuzz fuzzy, but sometimes you want that thick and smooth fuzz tone without those artifacts and that's really a tough thing to get with an actual fuzz. You have to pick so lightly and walk a tightrope of it being too dark and dull but if you try and pick harder or turn the volume/tone up more for more definition you get the artifacts. Super neat!
THIS. I wanted to hear the two guitars on a level playing field. While the cheap amp does its own fuzz thing, the Dumble allowed the guitar's tone to shine through even at the edge of breakup.
News flash, they won't sound much different. Maybe in the room there are nuances but all the tonewood, paint, name on the headstock are all marketing gimmick. Comes down to pickups and the amp. The Deep state sounds slightly compressed vs Klon to me. The Klon slashes a bit more in the high mids. I thought at first it was the amp so I’m glad you plugged ‘em both into the Dumble. The creamy butterscotch region of the tone sounds equivalent.
I love that Joe who gets shredded for boring a cork sniffer and a gear hog is showing how you can get amazing expensive tone with affordable gear. You're the man Joe!
i like the sound of the econo-line rig. that dumble has a raspier, buzzier sound because of the tubes, that little solid state fender sounds a bit cleaner and neater.
I've had a Sidekick Reverb 35 with a Celestion V-30, and have used it for gigging and teaching for almost 40 years. It always sounds great, and has never let me down, and has never needed servicing.
yes yes yes. please more of these! i love this. hell add a mid price option as well. my only question is what are you comparing? overall sound of the pricey option to the sound of the cheaper? i mean, im down for that. but really sound is subjective, tone is what matters. seeing a cheaper kit come close in tone using various cheaper pedals and amps instills confidence in your purchase for those lower and mid grade parts. lol lets be real, you dont sell a vintage dumble, a vintage dumble sells itself, well at least i would think so, i wouldn't know. i do hope to see more of these. they are great.
I preferred the Deep State over the Klon when he was going into the Dumble. The upper mids helped the guitar cut through. Can hardly wait to get my JHS Notaklon going and try it through my rig.
I bought a Sidekick 25 in 1987 with my first guitar, a 1987 MIJ Squier. That amp got stolen in about 1989. About 2 years ago my wife found me another one on Facebook Marketplace for $60. SO I have that now.
So, the title is misleading really. He seems to be comparing two pedals, not the amps and guitars so much. If the amps are set to clean... well, then how are you comparing them if you only are running overdrive pedals? Better to just compare those 2 pedals into the same amp and guitar like he apparently does around 4:44. Only change ONE VARIABLE or you won't be able to know what is what. When he compares pedals using the same amp and guitar, there's basically not much difference I can hear. But with different amp and guitar, the Fender/Epiphone/Deep State setup is less focused. Bit more woofy. Another thing is the sound is not directly related to how a guitar FEELS in your hands and how easy it plays. Those things are not put forth here because.. you can't. You'd have to actually play one to find out.
There are a lot of great boutique pedal makers. They do make awesome pedals that are work of art. Perfecting and capturing the magic of old pedals. Then you have George Tripps. Man, behind so many great pedals. Sure, he can make a great Klone clone, but he made so many other things. For me, he is a real inventor and tone chaser.
