This is honestly my favorite song of theirs! It's so hauntingly beautiful and the lyrics are VERY deep. It's one of those songs I could understand being played at someone's funeral.
My next favorite song of theirs would definitely be "Carry On Wayward Son", and I highly recommend you listen it too! It's faster-paced than this one and has some very intense guitar parts and the harmonies are VERY tight! (Plus, it's the unofficial anthem to my favorite show, but I honestly loved the song well before Supernatural even came out, so yeah, definitely give it a listen.)

I've had 4 heart attacks and a minor stroke. This song is so true and powerful. Believe it or not I was one of the many people who took life for granted, even after the first heart attack. After the second heart attack (it was a really bad one) I was at home recovering and listening to all my old records, tapes, cd's and I came across this song. It made me think a little bit before I had any heart attacks but it really hit me hard after the second heart attack. People, please don't take life for granted, yours or others. We have so little time on this earth and we don't realize it. Now I try to live my life doing things that I want and enjoying my family and friends. I treat EVERYONE with respect and try to encourage them to make the best decisions and live a better life. I didn't make the best decisions in my younger years and it caught up to me. Anyway this is one of the truest songs ever written. Kansas knocked out of the park with it.

I've always understood this song as a meditation in 3 parts.
Part 1: Despair. "Same old song...". Nothing matters, what's the point?
Part 2: Lamentation. The violin represents weeping, someone crying at the futility of life and how death awaits us all.
Part 3: Catharsis. "Don't hang on..." Yes, the same fate awaits us all, but that makes what we do NOW even more important. Be good, be kind. Don't get caught up in the trappings of life like material things. They all crumble to dust just like us.
This song is so beautiful and timeless. Many have commented on how short it is but that is also part of its message. Life is short.
I'm 50 and I've listened to this songs hundreds of times over the years and it still rings true and brings tears to my eyes. That is rare in this life. How ironic that a song about nothing lasting can be so enduring?

The story Kerry Livgren (the guitarist in this video) tells in his book is that one day he was just playing around with finger picking exercises. His wife comes in and says that sounds really nice, it should be a song. Writing the lyrics was almost a stream of consciousness thing, just based on what he'd been thinking about lately. One of their biggest songs was pretty much an accident.

In fact all the band members kind of looked like football players. They were one of the few bands whose concert performances lived up to their album recordings. Despite sometimes being over indulgent (what '70's progressive rock bands were not?), in their prime they were among the best bands out there, and one of the the only successful American progressive bands of their era.

Kansas is ??? What we used to call Meditation music, and is the kind of music that will take you places, if you cared to listen to it in a darkened room.
If you really wanna hear some of their straight ahead, faster paced, hard driving music, then go back and listen to their 2nd and 3rd album. ( Song For America.)
Or ( Masque.) " Child Of Innocence." Is one you'll like, or ( The Devil Game.) 2nd song on side 1. Of ( Song For America.)
" Incomudro Hymn To The Atman." They always saved as their encore tune that left most LIVE audiences, stunned and breathless.

Kansas had a lot of good songs, and they were indeed capable of a more hard rock sound. Other songs you should check out are "Carry On Wayward Son" and "Point of Know Return".

The masters of prog rock. And this song only touches on their talent. The depth of their lyrics is fascinating and the instruments are like a small orchestra thrown into a rock band. Then there's the harmony and Kerry's voice. Choose ANYTHING from albums *Point Of No Return* or *LeftOverture* This is their acoustic beauty. But never fear; they do kick ass.

It wasn't Kerry Livgren's voice. It was Steve Walsh. But Kerry wrote almost all their great songs & could play any instrument.

The band from my birth state! Got to see them early 1970s at college, was a real treat! Steinhardt had more hair than anyone I'd ever seen prior to the 1980s, LOL

I remember hearing this for years growing up. My grandfather had it on 8-track tape, one of the mix tapes my uncle made for him. My grandmother used to say she wanted this song played at her funeral. Sadly she and my sister are not speaking to me, and the rest of the family is either already deceased or is also out of touch with all of us. So it is up to my sister to remember this as a solo enterprise.

Check out Miracles Out Of Nowhere and Song For America. These guys have alot of instrumentation on their songs. They were big in the 70's. Great Reaction!😎🎸❤️👍
