I read that Terry Jacks was producing The Beach Boys at the time and that they didn’t finish it and he then did it on his own album - he didn’t write it though.

Jacks was better known as a producer at that point of his career, but added his vocals to the same backing track and ended up getting a HUGE hit out of it.

Rod McKuen rewrote the lyrics to adapt it to English (it doesn’t directly translate well). Terry Jacks decided to do it after he produced The Beach Boys version, which they decided not to release.

My best memory of SEASONS IN THE SUN? It was 1973 I was in seventh grade and I was in bed with the flu for a week and would constantly hear this song on heavy rotation on WABC 77 AM Radio in NYC.
I lost my sister Joy to leukemia. My daughter Jessy was her Michelle. She was definitely the "black sheep of the family", and when she was fighting what she knew was a losing battle, she could not bear to hear this song because it made us both cry so hard. I was her trusted friend. The fact that he sings, we had JOY, so many times, this is the only song that still reduces me to tears every single time!!!
I was always moved to tears by this song but I love it and his voice is perfect for this song. I'm so happy to hear it again as I was young and very fit when this came out and used to do my mending listening to this and others on the radio. I think this is my favourite reaction so far, firstly because it's such a fantastic song which I've always loved. I really admire how the song is constructed, it's so, so sad and yet still manages to be a really great, reflective tune. Terry Jacks was married and he and his wife at the time had a few songs that were in the top 40''a in the '60's---that's where I went wrong" and "which way you going Billie?" they divorced later. I believe the intention of this song had to do with the wars of the time. young soldiers dying and what they had to live for. It is a sad song but a lovely song. thank you for posting it!

Terry Jacks took an older song, called le moribond (which had a much darker meaning and message behind it), and kinda rearranged the lyrics for a friend of his that was given 6 months to live because of lukemia(I think he only lived for four months). This song, to me, seems to be sung from the perspective of a soldier going off to die, or remembering while he was dying, during the time of the Vietnam War. It was a song I remember from my childhood as being a happy song (because of the chorus), but as I got older it had a different meaning to me.

The chorus really sounded like it was for kids, but I did understand he was talking about someone dying.

The 70's some of the best music ever. I was 12 when this song came out and I still have the 45. With all the times I've played it over the years, I'm surprised it is not worn out. Terry Jacks didn't write this song. It was originally written and recorded by a Belgian singer/songwriter named Jacques Brel in the early 60s. The American poet Rod McKuen re-wrote the lyrics in English and that version was recorded by The Kingston Trio in 1963. Terry Jacks produced the instrumental track for this version in the early 70s, intended for The Beach Boys to record the vocals. Their version was completed but left unreleased due to some legal issues, so Jacks recorded his own vocal over the backing track, and ended up with this MAJOR hit. There have been numerous cover versions over the years, but this one is considered the definitive version now.

Rod McKuen is the author of a poem "Seasons in the Sun" that he based loosely on another poem from a French author. Terry Jacks was married and he and his wife at the time had a few songs that were in the top 40''a in the '60's---that's where I went wrong" and "which way you going Billie?" they divorced later. I believe the intention of this song had to do with the wars of the time. young soldiers dying and what they had to live for. It is a sad song but a lovely song. thank you for posting it!
I’ve seen various comments about who did and didn’t write this song. That person only wrote the English lyrics. The tune is “Le Moribond” by the great Jacques Brel.
Le Moribond??? Sounds like French for "the death".
@@mikebetts2046 It can be translated as "The Dying Man", which is what both the original and the translation are about.

Terry Jacks took an older song, called le moribond (which had a much darker meaning and message behind it), and kinda rearranged the lyrics for a friend of his that was given 6 months to live because of lukemia(I think he only lived for four months). He wrote this from his friends perspective. Very sad. Great analysis. Love your videos.

I was 8 and we all sang this song at the top of our lungs. We knew it was sad and we knew that someone who died was singing it (in our minds). Sadly, one of the boys I sang it with that summer has passed and I was listening to this to bring that summer back and remember him. I stumbled on your video. This song, to me, seems to be sung from the perspective of a soldier going off to die, or remembering while he was dying, during the time of the Vietnam War. It was a song I remember from my childhood as being a happy song (because of the chorus), but as I got older it had a different meaning to me.

When I was a really little boy I was given a portable cassette player and I recorded some songs off the radio that I really liked. This song was one I was obsessed with. I'd play it over and over. The chorus really sounded like it was for kids, but I did understand he was talking about someone dying.

Seasons in the Sun is an English adaptation of the Belgian (French language) song Le Moribund. The origins of the French original is an injured soldier saying goodbye in his head to his friend. Terry Jacks rewrote in English, and added the verses to his father and girlfriehd, based on the words of his friend who was dying of leukaemia.

I used to sit in the very back seat of the school bus with my best friend, and this is one of the songs that played on the radio. I lost her to cancer when we were just twenty-nine. I could remake these lyrics for our childhood school days. Can’t wait to see her on the other side. Too many seasons without her.

Terry Jacks didn't write this song. It was originally written and recorded by a Belgian singer/songwriter named Jacques Brel in the early 60s. The American poet Rod McKuen re-wrote the lyrics in English and that version was recorded by The Kingston Trio in 1963. Terry Jacks produced the instrumental track for this version in the early 70s, intended for The Beach Boys to record the vocals. Their version was completed but left unreleased due to some legal issues, so Jacks recorded his own vocal over the backing track, and ended up with this MAJOR hit. There have been numerous cover versions over the years, but this one is considered the definitive version now.
