When I first heard this song at around age seven, I thought afternoon delight was some amazing kind of ice cream cone 😂 😳? This has to be the happiest song about sex ever recorded.
Apparently, one of the band members ate a dish called "Afternoon Delight" at a restaurant, and then came back to the rest of the band members and said what that phrase SHOULD mean. So...the inspiriation for the song did start OUT food-related... XD
Hahahaha. I was clueless... until I was about 17 or so and someone mentioned this song. I felt so embarrassed that I would sing this song in front of my parents & grandparents as a kid. Hahaha
Jeez...this song was everywhere when I was a kid and I was infatuated with the harmonies. I don't think I was paying attention to the looks being shot my way as I sang this at the top of my lungs. 😂 Of course I was the same idiot singing Devo songs in front of my parents with no clue whatsoever.."we shove the poles in the holes!" 😳😰😁😁
@@kimberlinibambini1988 the innocence of childhood..can't have that anymore these days. Lyrics no longer contain metaphors and poetry. I had a whole scenario in my head with this song and it basically looked like a picnic in the park on the 4th of July. 😂😂
Me too!! I was five years old walking around with my little record player playing the 45 constantly. Thought it was hysterical when I was old enough to know what "Afternoon Delight" meant, lol. My favorites in the 80's (when I was a teenager) to belt out were Frankie Goes to Hollywood's "Relax (Don't Do It)" and Cyndi Lauper's "She Bop", so there you go. :)
I knew what the song was about, so before it started I was already laughing! I was really looking forward to the reaction when the lyrics kicked in 😂😂😂
I think those of us that were very young children in the 80's have a special appreciation for 70's music because everyone told us to NEVER listen to it. And then we did...
This was such a huge hit that year. For some reason, this song always makes me think of those back-to-the-land communes of the late sixties and seventies where people would garden and do chores completely naked to be more real and natural.
I remember in the 6th grade hearing it on the radio (and it was played constantly). One day I was singing it while down in my dad's workroom; he was there, and he turned to me and said, "What kind of song are you singing?" and my reply to him was, "Oh, it's about eating lunch." LOL!! I had no idea what that song was about!! He just shook his head and kept working.
I had a similar experience with my dad only over the song "Lola" by The Kinks! He lost it when he walked into my room just in time to catch me singing at the top of my lungs "well I'm not dumb but I can't understand why she walks like a woman but talks like a man"!
Man this song is why I adore 70’s music. You should look up the scene from the movie anchorman where they sing this a capella. Surprisingly very good. Keep up the great work!
And this was such a seemingly innocuous song to those of us who were young teenagers. A lovely upbeat about sex without being smutty, crude or disrespectful. And fun!
I got a kick out of watching him get flustered in this video. This song was all over the radio for a long time. I was in high school and remember girls singing along but not knowing what the song was about. I just sang along with them.
I was even more innocent and thought it was about an icecream sundae or something. Very young and clearly put any of the lyrics together! But I sang it to the top of my lungs!!! HAHAHAHA!
You're not alone! I also thought this song was about ice cream. Actually, it was more like sherbet for me: lime, orange and raspberry. I plead being five years old at the time. :)
I was waiting to see the reaction on your face, haha...roll in the sack in the afternoon...of course if you were young back then you were clueless but yeah, I start laughing when I hear this song anymore. LOL!!! I'm really don't understand how they didn't burst out laughing when they were trying to sing this, especially the skyrockets part. LOL!!!!

Have to admit ..... That song has always been a secret pleasure of mine since I was a kid since it came out in the 70's .... Really great to hear it again, love the vocals on it. Thank you ! 😉👍
