This played on the radio continuously when it came out. In the pre-internet days there was no (easy) way to find out what the song was about, so we all arrived at our own conclusions. But it sure was a visceral sad song.
This is a song from my youth. There were several sad songs from that era, including "Honey" by Bobby Goldsboro and "Billy, Don't Be a Hero" by Bo Donaldson and the Heywoods.
Like always you nailed it. The melody does have a kinda nursery rhyme feel. It’s a goodbye note to the people he still cares about out or messed up with in his past. It’s an emotional attempt at explanation and an apology. It was a huge hit when I was a kid. It was sung in a range we could all reach and sing and so we did on the school bus, in the shower, wherever. Great job as always Jim.
"Seasons In The Sun" was a major hit for Terry Jacks in 1974, along side Blue Swede's version of "Hooked on a Feeling". Both songs shared so much radio play together that year when I was six that they are woven together in my recollections now.
Terry Jacks was the brother of Susan Jacks who formed the duo the Poppy Family that had a hit in 1970-Which Way You Goin Billy-that featured Susan Jacks on vocals. When Seasons In The Sun came out, I was in junior high and lost two classmates in the span of two months-this song brings me back to that time-one was expected the other an accidental hanging.
I am new to your channel...I am currently losing a friend of 54 years met when I was 4...he is passing due to cancer...this song wrecks me...Thanks for the reaction!!! Peace out man...HUGZZZZ
based on a french song Le Morbond (the dying man). When Terry recorded it, he ended up changing some of the lyrics because translation from french to english didn't translate well. One hit wonder
I can hardly believe I am suggesting this artist/song, But in the interest of "Sad Songs"... This was a HUGE HEARTBREAKER. I might get a tear from you yet.... Wayne Newton - Daddy Don't You Walk So Fast (1972)
This song brings back many memories for me. I went to school with a girl who was a ward of the state. (a child who, as determined by the State where the child resides, is a foster child, is a ward of the State, or is in the custody of a public child welfare agency) She was placed in a nunnery. I could see she was troubled so I befriended her. She told me in some detail of what she endured. She ended up taking her own life because of what the nuns did to her sexually.
Great song, great memories! Next, ya gotta check out another gem from 1974 called “TSOP,” aka the Soul Train theme, by MFSB. This band is from my hometown of Philly. ✌️
I was pretty young when this hit the radio and us ‘cool’ kids thought it was daggy as we say here Downunder. To hear it today was really interesting and as always your reaction was great, thx

"Ode to Billie Joe" by Bobbie Gentry
I love the fact you're looking into the 60s and early 70s music.
The side 2 on this 45 was a great song to called, Put The Bone In. He's at the butcher and asking for the bone for his dog that had been hit by a car.

A great song from my younger years. Enjoyed your reaction to it.

Cool
This is one of those Must Do for any respectable Reactor. Your comments are a Must Hear themselves.
Such a sad song
Wanna hear a sad one, check out Jackson Browne’s For a Dancer.

Who is Donavan?
Good friend of the Beatles
Sad song, but thanks to Family Guy and a bit of ADHD, his pronunciation of where, as h-were, was driving me nuts.
Very sad .
Written and rejected by The Beach Boys, Terry recorded it himself and had a big hit
One of the cheesiest songs on AM radio at the time, some memories are best forgotten
