That's Eric singing lead. He had this band from 1970-1971. He'll make you forget your pain. Seriously. Dude's on a whole nother level. And Duane is a guest on this one. Their collaborations were mostly blues. Unmatched.

Derek and the Dominos was just a one-time project (rather than a band) that a bunch of major, huge musicians got together to make. Some did a little collaboration on some Delaney & Bonnie and Friends tracks as well. It wasn't, like, a band making just one album. It was well established rock gods doing a thing.
The most recognizable opening riff in rock.
Derek and the Dominos were not "one-hit wonders." They were legends!
This was their only hit.

It was a weird album release without a name recognition and had a hard time being noticed with the name DERECK .It had a bad start but has reached great heights of notoriety since then . / .Layla and Other Assorted Love Songs was issued in November 1970. According to Shapiro, relative to the band and Dowd's high expectations, it was a "critical and commercial flop".[71] Clapton similarly describes Layla as having "died a death" on release.[72] Although it received favourable reviews in Rolling Stone and The Village Voice, the album missed the top ten in the United States and failed to chart at all in the United Kingdom, until a reissue on CD resulted in a one-week stay at number 68 in 2011. It has since received widespread critical acclaim and has been ranked among the best albums of all time by VH1 (at number 89).[75] and Rolling Stone (number 115).[76] Layla is considered one of Clapton's most outstanding achievements.

Bobby Whitlock wasn't overly impressed; "According to Whitlock, Allman was "a hired gun" and an "unnecessary" addition; Whitlock added, "He played with us twice, and it was not good both times he played, because he was not a fluid player ... He could play parts, but he couldn’t sing with his guitar." The jams from Allman's first night at Criteria with the Dominos were issued on the second CD of The Layla Sessions: 20th Anniversary Edition in 1990.[66]

And as many don't know... the riff was written and performed by Duane Allman.

Ah-hem, Bell Bottom Blues got a good deal of play...Layla is Patti Harrison. Wife of George Harrison, and the cause of much pain. I respectfully disagree about this being a one-hit-wonder. I cannot tell you the number of times I've listened to the album in its entirety and it's a masterpiece.

@Deborah Dean According to Google this was only U.S. hit. I searched hard so Jayvee prob found what I did. Bell Bottom Blues was hit in the U.K.

Has to be one of the best songs ever written. The end piano section never fails to give me goosebumps. Clapton wrote this about George Harrisons wife who he was in love with. He made some great songs but this has to be his crowning glory
The end bit of this song haunts me takes me back over twenty four yrs ago sitting in hosp when my son had had horriific double rd accident no hope but he did pull through heard this song as nurses went for tea brake could hear it x

There's actually a story about the piano section was not supposed to be part of the song. It seems one on the backup musicians was using the studio for his own music after hours and Eric Clapton caught him at it. They compromised that if he wanted to use the studio he had to give him this piano peice.
Lidia Pereira It was drummer Jim Gordon. He was dating Rita Coolidge at the time. The piano part was originally a demo they co-wrote called “Time (Don’t Let The Word Get In Our Way). Jim stole the piano part and attached the end of “Layla” and never credited Rita.
This was a song Eric wrote about being in love with his best friends wife. Best friend was George Harrison from the Beatles. Her name was Patti but he had to hide who it was about. Eventually they got together and married. He and George actually stayed friends. Amazing
George referred to them as "husbands-in-law".
Patti Boyd was the blond school girl on the train in "Hard Day's Night". It's where she met George Harrison, George wrote "Something" about her.

The coda is the cool down counter balance to the insane passion Clapton was putting across.

There was a time when people would say this was the best rock song of all time....hehe.
I was already a rocker when I was young. But then this song hit the airwaves and that sealed the deal. This song absolutely blew me away. The power of it, the longing in his voice, lightening fast guitar, it was done.

Bass player, Carl Radle worked with Leon for years.
Jim Gordon, the ego tripper, was one of the greatest drummers of all time. Everybody wanted him for studio session work.
Duane Allman. Slide master that Eric was in awe of. Leader of the Allman Brothers Band.Really? Just Clapton?
Bobby Whitlock played organ for Delaney and Bonnie and friends. He was one of the friends...so was Clapton. They played together on George Harrison's, 'All Things Must Pass'.

Eric Claptons “Slow Hand” album was great. Cocaine, wonderful tonight, Lay down Sally.
Eric Clapton spents many weeks if not months visiting the “Mississippi Delta” playing with many of the original blues singers and songwriters. He loves the sound. Great talent! Many memories ❤️
He also did a great and very different acoustic version of this song.

I would also agree that this version is more iconic than the acoustical version. However I cannot think of another song with the same artist recorded in two different ways that are both amazing. It truly does represent what incredible artist Eric Clapton is.

Drummer Jim Gordon took credit for writing it. Actually, it was written by his gf Rita Coolidge (and her sister).

Yes! That piano part is GREAT! Especially the walk down the part when it transitions back and forth to the guitar. It is so meditating as if you were lying on a raft in the ocean and you were feeling these smooth rolling waves. I hope my description makes sense.

This was about his best friend's wife Patti Boyd. As others have said, he had to hide the fact he was singing about her. "Wonderful Tonight" was about her too. I think her husband, George Harrison wrote a song about her too. Imagine being the kind of woman that inspired so many iconic, amazing songs.

Cynthia Johnson Actually, they had each heard of the other and appreciated each other’s talent. The story goes that Derek and Dominos were not quite getting the sound then enter Duane Allman and they found their sound!

Derek & The Dominos Layla album is one of THE BEST ALBUMS EVER MADE!!! I am 65 years old and really enjoy your reactions...been meaning to send you Derek & The Dominos for some time for your reaction because it is probably one of my favorite albums of ALL TIME. I come from the day when you used to have to plunk down $15 to $20 bucks for an album (which was a lot of money back then) and often times there was only one good song on it. :( But on this Derek & The Dominos album, EVERY SONG IS EFFING GREAT!!!! Don't know what was wrong with the American people back then that only 1 song was a hit (are you sure that is correct, because Bell Bottom Blues was very popular too.) But Layla & Bell Bottom Blues are not my favorites, although I love them too. Check out 'Why Does Love Got to Be So Sad' and 'Thorn Tree in My Garden.' Oh hell...JUST LISTEN TO THE WHOLE ALBUM, EVERY SONG IS EFFING GREAT!!! I actually have the entire album saved in my RUclips list, because I said I was going to send them to you...so if you want me to, I will send you all the links and you don't have to do the leg work. Let me know...and keep on keeping us entertained and reliving our own wonderful memories of this music. Much love.

When and where did you pay $15 to $20 bucks for an album? I began purchasing new vinyl record albums in 1978 at Tower Records for about $5.99. Single 45s were less than $1.
@@PK-hw5go 1965 to 1972, in Pueblo, CO. There was no Tower Records in Pueblo. But I do remember the price of albums significantly dropping after '72. But in my neck of the woods tthey were still between $10-$15.
@@DebsTubes4u Gee... sounds expensive. I bought them in So Cal. 45s were less than a dollar. Maybe changes in technology resulted in lower the prices. I bought a 19" Sony tv or $600 in 1983. That was considered expensive, but Sony was one of the best. I like today's tv prices much better !!

A Clapton song that is similarly impressive is "Let it Rain" from Clapton's first solo album released 1970 (the same year as "Layla").

Duane was a session player in Muscle Shoals Alabama. Clapton heard Wicked Wilson Pickett's cover of the Beatles' Hey Jude, featuring Duane's guitar playing. That collaboration was the Beginning of Southern Rock. You can hear that on RUclips, too.
After that, Duane moved across town to Sheffield to work with the Famous Swampers at Muscle Shoals Sound. Duane was living in a little log cabin on the banks of the Tennessee River in Sheffield where he fished, wrote songs and music and put together a band that would become The Allman Brothers Band. The log cabins are gone but not the aura of the place.
Clapton called Duane in Sheffield and told him that they just had to do something together! The result? You're listening to it.

I was a young lad back in the sixties working gigs on weekends and had the awesome pleasure of watching Eric Clapton from no more than three feet away playing in the band John Mayall & the Bluesbreakers,don’t remember the date, but probably around 1965/66.

Actually, yeah, he did win "Layla" (Patti Boyd) over from his best friend, George Harrison (yes, that George Harrison - who also worked in studio with Clapton on the Dominos project). Not a good story, but boy did it generate a song for the rock pantheon.
George was already messing with Ringo's wife Maureen (first wife), and wasn't exactly fighting to keep Pattie. As Pattie tells it, anyway.

It's time to do the Allman Brothers and their live version of "Whipping Post". Jim Gordon, the drummer here, wrote the beautiful piano part in this song. What a sad history that guy had. The truth is every song Clapton wrote on this album was a plea to Patti to accept his love and marry him. She is often quoted as saying when she finally heard the album she was flattered, shocked and perhaps a bit upset. I never saw this band, although at the time I sure had my chances. But I did see Eric with Stevie Winwood when they played in NYC with their band Blindfaith. It was their only NYC appearance.
Sad story about Gordon? The dude was all messed on drugs and then killed his own mother with a hammer! I believe he's still locked up.

Technically, this was the only hit by Derek & the Dominos, but "Bell Bottom Blues", which I recommend, is something of an FM radio classic.

This song and GFRs I'm Your Captain were the first songs that I remember when I first discovered "FM" radio as a kid. Opened my world to SO much music!
Anybody who plays the piano loves this song. It is a must in the playlist. I drove my piano teacher crazy when I found the sheet music for this song back in the day.

Duane Allman and Bobby Whitlock were as great as Eric was on this ..Without Bobby's piano style and the slide guitar by Duane ,this song would not have been the same..
Duane wrote the riff and plays most of the lead throughout the first half of the song, too.

Layla was released back in 1972 by Derek and the Dominos as a single in support of its parent album Layla and Other Assorted Love Songs.
Singing lead vocals is Eric Clapton and the guitar he used when Derek and the Dominos recorded Layla was a desert sunburst Fender Stratocaster named Brownie and when Fender released the Eric Clapton Brownie Stratocaster, it was dubbed The Layla Guitar.
Playing slide guitar is Duane Allman of The Allman Brothers Band and the piano part at the end was played by Jim Gordon.
Because it was a big hit, Eric Clapton included the song in his solo concerts and the song became popular again thanks to his acoustic version from the album Eric Clapton Unplugged which was released in 1992.
The 1972 version hit #1 on the Puerto Rican Singles Chart, #7 on the UK Singles Chart, #10 on the US Billboard Hot 100, #14 on the US Cash Box Singles Chart and #12 on the US Record World Singles Chart.
Hey Blood !! This song helped get me through Army basic training in 1972 !! It's my main "driving" song to this day !! Lead singer was Eric Clapton.
This song was his tribute to George Harrison's wife, Patti Boyd...a woman that Clapton loved and eventually married.
Not the right song for a day with a sore body. Nope! they had other hits but they did split up after a short while. Eric is singing. His guitar, his song, his voice. One of my favorite rock songs of all time. Let It Rain is also a great song from this band and Bell Bottom Blues. Layla was a girl named Patty who was George Harrison's (Beatles) wife or girlfriend. Eric was so enamored with her and later she split from George and got together with Eric and they remained together for a long time. George is playing guitar on this song as well though I don't know if he is credited. Eric also played the guitar on Harrison's "While My Guitar Gently Weeps." Eric and George were lifetime friends in spite of the whole Patty thing.

The studio version of "Let It Rain" is Clapton solo, not Derek & the Dominos.
Actually both the men treated her pretty badly ,neither stayed with her both too engrossed in their own concerns .Mind you ,both had amazing musical carrers

YAY! I'm glad you did this one. I knew you'd like it, especially for the guitar and for the switch-up at the end. This is one of those songs that you'd stay in your car to finish listening to - all the way to the end - even if you were late for an appointment. LOL
It feels to me like the first part is a desperate and despondent man in love screaming "can't you see me? I've been here for you every step of the way! Why do you keep going back to him?" Then that little pause is like her finally stopping herself from repeating the same mistake, looking around, seeing him there (still and again), and the realization of the beautiful truth starts to flow into her.....and her life and his life become THEIR life...off into the sunset.
