“Calypso” is titled after the name of Jacques Cousteau’s ship. He was dedicated to conservation of the ocean and you close your eyes during the song and feel like you are there.
I remember teenage me at Macy's when they 1st opened to run through like a maniac to their ticketmaster and still only getting crappy seats. Later in life I worked in a field where I could get free tickets to pretty much any show or sporting event I wanted. The only person I still stood in line for was John Denver, because I wanted to be closer down front. I'll never forget when I finally got my 1st front row seat and the idiot ticket master guy said " do you want front row or do you want me to put you farther back." I had literally waited my entire for that ticket!! He tried to tell me the sound was a bit better few rows ack. I pointed out that I had a great sound system and every album and CD he ever made at home, and get me that blasted front of ticket now!
My New York brother was recruited during a summer tournament in New Mexico by a Colorado college on a baseball scholarship when he was 18. He's 59 now and is still there. Beautiful country out there!
The song is about himself. The first time he saw the mountains in Colorado, he was 27. And he loved it. Henry John Deutschendorf Jr. became John Denver. My mom listened to him and actually had my whole BROWNIE TROOP sing “Sweet Surrender” at a Girl Scout Meet. Lol, love the memories.RIP JOHN DENVER RIP MOM ❤️

"Take Me Home Country Road" is great and "I'm Leaving on a Jet Plane" if you find a video with John and Cass Elliot singing it together you will love it.
This song always makes me cry. It is our theme song as for a while I was living in Vancouver and my now hubby was in Ottawa. Took us about 2 years to be in the same city.
Whenever I hear of the song Leaving On A Jet Plane, the movie Armageddon always comes to mind, but even way before that I bought a record album at the mall/ It featured this song on it by John Lindsey, who I guess was one of the singers that popularized the song at the time in the early 70s.
You can never go wrong with a John Denver product. He along with Glen Campbell, Bobby Goldsboro, BJ Thomas, put you in a mood that takes you from the troubles and bad moods you may be in...... A class act!!!
The way I described John's music...his playing and his vocal ability...is PRISTINE. There is absolutely nothing more needed, other than his voice and his guitar.
I remember when this song came out. It was a big hit and I bought the single. Played the snot out of it. "Calypso" would be a great song to react to next, or "Sunshine on My Shoulders." Either of them will make John Denver fans happy. He was also an actor. He starred alongside George Burns in the movie "Oh, God!" which went on to be the highest grossing comedy of all time, up to that point in time. RIP
You are right!! John Denver didn’t have a bad song. His voice was so distinct. You knew immediately that is was him when a new song came out. He truly was amazing. But, he died doing what he loved most, flying his plane. What a great loss for music. It’s so wonderful that the younger generation can appreciate his greatness. He was truly one of a kind. The soundtracks of my life. Unfortunately, when I hear his unbelievable voice and songs, it makes me wonder why I settled in life, and not waited for what was best for me. Hello there, crikey 2yrs ago your John Denver reaction. I enjoy very much his music and in answer to your question Rocky Mountain High is from his own personal experience of moving to Aspen and feeling at home. I was 5 when this great song happened in our house and I played it over n over on our turntable.....still listening to it today. WE MISS YOU JOHN DENVER💙
One of the two signature songs from John's career (along with Take Me Home Country Road). Another of the great 70s singer/songwriters (and actor) who left us much too soon. This is one of the great chill-out songs of all time. This was about his own visit and then move to Aspen, Colorado, and how much he fell in love with his adopted state. He would end up living there for the rest of his life.
I love this song the lyrics are so powerful and hit in the center of the heart. He's talking about a lifestyle most people will never experience. Love the line he'd be a poorer man if he never saw an eagle fly. Makes me want to walk in the woods.
I love John Denver and his songs. They're great to sing along to, and I can keep up with most of them. The two songs when he leaves me in the dust are Calypso a song about Jacques Cousteau, and the absolute lung buster, The Eagle and The Hawk.
Hello from Denver, Colorado -- the Mile High City! You should absolutely come to Colorado! John Denver fell in love with the Colorado mountains and he lived in Aspen. The peace and the beauty of the land was a huge balm to his troubled soul. This song still makes me cry - love and miss him
I was fortunate to see him live several times...his voice was just as pure and clear live as on any recording. What a treat! No autotune, just absolutely amazing!
I recommend "Rhymes and Reasons", "Goodbye Again", "Cowboy's Delight", "For Baby (For Bobby)", "Love Is Everywhere", "Calypso" and my personal favorite "The Eagle and the Hawk". Glad you like John so much, he was an amazing songwriter that I'm glad I got to hear while growing up in the 1970s. The world lost a great person and soul when he passed away.
The perfect song about a person suddenly finding himself and finding what matters.
I remember when John Denver just exploded onto the airwaves. He dominated the radio for years, every song an almost instant hit.
he had the midas touch for sure :)

I love the words of this song. It tells a beautiful story. My favourite John Denver song. 🎶👏
His voice is so clear and pure and he sings with such ease, I love listening to him. God Bless.
Love John Denver. Brings back so many childhood memories. Calypso is my favorite John Denver song.
Lisa Drinkwater I love Calypso!
I love this song
the lyrics are so powerful and hit in the center of the heart.
Beautiful, classy reaction to the beautiful, classy John Denver. Thank you. 💕
Absolutely love John Denver!
Hello from Denver, Colorado -- the Mile High City! You should absolutely come to Colorado! John Denver fell in love with the Colorado mountains and he lived in Aspen. The peace and the beauty of the land was a huge balm to his troubled soul. This song still makes me cry - love and miss him
Back Home Again is the one that still makes my eyes mist over after all these years. It's just so warm and pretty.
I was fortunate to see him live several times...his voice was just as pure and clear live as on any recording. What a treat! No autotune, just absolutely amazing!
One of the greatest voices WE all have had the pleasure to hear.
Great example of crystal clear vocals. Beautiful song.
High on life! Also, you might give his “Calypso “ a listen.
My favorite John Denver song. 🌹 This song has so much power. If you ever journey to the Rocky Mountains you understand it even more.
John Dutchendorf ... 😂
One of the purest voices ever! Beautiful! & talented musicians accompanying🎶
