This was not about drugs. Its a story of a young man who is swept up in the awesomeness of nature n the wonder of how God and nature fits in this too fast paced world. The song isn't about drugs, but John was a well known huge fan of Marijuana and the line Friends around the campfire and everybody's high is definitely about pot, but most of it is just about nature.
@@TristanandIsolt Actually, its about the 76 Winter Olympics that were originally planned for Vail, CO. Him and other groups successfully got the Olympics moved to Innsbruck, Austria.
@@stevensnyder1133 That was part of the inspiration, but nothing in the song refers to that. I'm just talking about one line from the song and I can certainly see John and friends getting around a campfire and smoking pot.
@@stevensnyder1133 The song is inspired by that, but not directly about that. That line could be about any form of building in the mountains. Rocky Mountain High is about one man's journey into spiritual discovery. It's not about a group of people trying to move the Olympics. I'm curious if you know specifics on the line "He lost a friend, but kept a memory." Is that about a friend of his dying while mountain climbing. Did he cause that man's death when "he went crazy once and tried to touch the sun." I found this on Reddit. " I've always heard that line was a reference to a friend of his that was visiting from Minnesota and was killed in an accident while riding Johns motorcycle.
Beautiful song! John Denver was a gifted singer songwriter & actor. He had so many great hits in the 70's-80's. Some of his signature songs were "Take Me Home, Country Roads", "Grandma's Feather Bed", "Fly Away", "Leaving On A Jet Plane", "Poems, Prayers & Promises", "Annie's Song", "Calypso", "Sunshine On My Shoulders" etc. John appeared in several films & television specials during the 70's-80's, including the 1977 hit "Oh, God!", in which he starred alongside George Burns.
He died in 1997 not '77, and it was a day I'll never forget -- I cried for hours. He was a masterful and incredibly influential singer/songwriter who had a huge hand in building the environmental movement and he was the reason I learned to play a 12-string guitar. He had a strong influence on me both personally and musically. He was so unique and his songs will forever live on. He was also a pretty decent actor and did a fantastic humorous turn in the film "Oh, God!" (a really fun movie worth watching). Thank you for responding to his music; I wish more reactors would.
"He was born in the summer of his twenty-seventh year; coming home, to a place he'd never been before." That's why John made the big bucks, that's some good stuff.
John Denver was always an environmentalist. Back in the day, there was a show on every week about a marine biologist/researcher named Jacques Cousteau that opened our eyes to the wonders of the seas. I think it was called "The Undersea World of Jacques Cousteau". Cousteau's research vessel was called "Calypso" and John Denver wrote a song about it, not surprisingly called, "Calypso". It would be a great reaction song. It's kind of a seafaring ditty if you will.
I would only correct that I believe The Undersea World of Jacques Cousteau actually not a weekly show but rather specials that came on every few months as I recall. I think that is another reason why we looked forward to them so much it was a special. That and the National Geographic specials were must watch tv in our house.
John was a natural born singer/songwriter/poet. Amazing lyrics! He always wrote about real things and real emotions. This song is about his experience when he moved to Colorado and how it affected him. He was also a dedicated conservationist and ecologist. He sailed with Jacques Cousteau on the Calypso and wrote some songs about it. RIP John-taken from us much too soon. PS-Fire raining from the sky is a meteor shower.

'Country Roads' is a song that sticks with you for life, every time as an adult you set off to visit your family or childhood friends.I'm 57 and I still think of it now driving to see my elderly parents
His live performance was the greatest musicianship I ever witnessed. 'Annie's Song', 'Poems, Prayers, and Promises', 'Rhymes and Reasons', and 'Sunshine On My Shoulders' are a few of my favorites of the 200+ songs he wrote. Peace.
Totally agree 💯 I saw him live a couple times in the 70s and was completely enthralled with the stunning acoustic guitar showcase he and Mike Taylor put on display. This is one example: John Denver - Poems, Prayers and Promises (from The Wildlife Concert). But 'Sunshine On My Shoulders' or 'Annie's Song' from this concert are great as well.
Johnny did a Wildlife Concert that you can find on youtube that is pretty awesome. It was performed a few years before his death. I too was fortunate to see him live a couple of times and actually got to meet him.@@barsandbarbells2022
Hi, and another great reaction. John Denver wrote songs about the environmental and personal issues affecting his life and surroundings. Much of his back catalogue takes you out of youself when listening, giving great emotion and escapism. Sunshine on my Shoulders is another such song, and will stay forever in my soul. Amazing artist, hone too soon. RIP John, you are greatly missed!
This was actually my very first favorite song. Even as a child it seemed to have a special significance to me and as I grew older it meant more and more to me, and even today it still speaks to me. It can be interpreted differently but for me it's the "high" of just being with nature itself. John was a naturalist and loved the pureness of untouched mountains and the country. Even if you do not react to his other songs, I highly suggest that you do look into them.
John Denver was one of the artists that inspired me to pick up the guitar 50 years ago this year. The first song I learned was "Take Me Home Country Roads". My older brother's guitar was always in the living room and we had music books including a John Denver book so I learned the song using the chord diagrams. Now, 50 years later, I still play some JD including with a duet partner I've had for 33 years. We play, "Goodbye Again", "This Old Guitar" and John's version of a cover he did called, "Today". It's a deep rabbit hole but well worth pursuing.
One of the nicest person ever to walk this planet. Amazing talent. Died doing something he loved to do. I guess that's really the best way to check out. As we say in Texas; y'all be safe.
This song and the John was a legend amongst legends. You need to react to many more of his great tunes like Country Roads, Calypso, Looking For Space, Annie’s Song. and many dozens more!
Growing up in the 60& 70's my dad was never really into music, he just called them hippies, i.e., The Beatles, etc., but he loved John Denver. My mom loved him too. Such a sad, tragic ending.

@@slucas60 according to several things I have read John wrote Annie's Song in 1973; it was released in 1974. Annie asked for a divorce in 1982. These dates are verified by both John & Annie in his autobiography & in an interview with Annie I watched on TV.
I had all of his albums in the 70's. He passed in 1997 crashing an experimental plane into the ocean. This is a very deep but very wonderful rabbit hole to go down!

He had such an amazing voice. One of a kind. ❤
In addition to being a great artist he was also just a great guy who is to fondly remembered by his family and all who knew him. He is greatly missed.
This song is the state song of Colorado. Another of his hits, "Country Roads" is the state song of West Virginia.
This song makes me think of my mom. She loved this song and would play this a lot.
Take Me home, Country Roads. Now, the state song of my home West Virginia. I love it.
John died in a plane crash back in 1997. "Thank God I'm A Country Boy", "Take Me Home Country Roads", "Calypso", and "Anne's Song".
Same here! As a young child I visited an aunt in Denver and fell in love with the mountains. This became 'my song.' 😊
One of my all-time favorite songs from the 70's. (greatest era in music, in my opinion). RIP Mr. Denver. Gone way too soon.
Didn’t die in 77
1997 in an experimental airplane. His dad was a military flyer
He had many hits!!! Very talented person!!!! You need to do more of his songs!!
Love all Denver music especially This Old Guitar, Calypso,Annie’s Song,The Eagle and The Hawk,Uncle Matthew,Rhyme and Reason. Back Home Again
One of the nicest person ever to walk this planet. Amazing talent. Died doing something he loved to do. I guess that's really the best way to check out.
As we say in Texas; y'all be safe.
Pure, poetic, crystal clear…RIP John. You are missed.
Beautiful song... reminds me of being a kid in dads car. Legend john denver.
Brings back great childhood memories. John Denver was played literally everywhere I went back in the 70's growing up in rural Ohio.
You guys should do “Annie’s Song” next, which was a hit and written for his wife. “Or Country Roads”, or “Leaving On A Jet Plane” 🙂 They are all so good it’s hard to choose lol. John truly had one of the purest, most beautiful voices ever.
Born and raised in Denver Colorado. Always loved John. At 57 years old now living in Las Vegas I still love to hear his voice. R.I.P to him as I know his soul is in a better place,
What a voice...! Try to sing this John Denver song as a solo and you'll realize how great his voice was. Terrific vocalist....!
John is renowned in the music world. My favorite song of his is Annie's Song. It is a very beautiful love song written for his wife in just 10 minutes while sitting on a ski lift. He was a prolific songwriter & singer.
Yes he wrote Annie's Song when he found out Annie was divorcing him.
@@slucas60 according to several things I have read John wrote Annie's Song in 1973; it was released in 1974. Annie asked for a divorce in 1982. These dates are verified by both John & Annie in his autobiography & in an interview with Annie I watched on TV.
@@l.l4456 Thanks, What I had heard was before the internet and never checked it out later.
Your reaction is spot on….peaceful. His songs were always very calming to me. ❤😊
As someone who lives in Colorado, everyone needs to lay their eyes upon it once.
I had all of his albums in the 70's. He passed in 1997 crashing an experimental plane into the ocean. This is a very deep but very wonderful rabbit hole to go down!
Such a story teller. He paints pictures with his compositions. Beautiful.
John was one of the highest selling recording artists of the 1970s. He's a legend. So many great songs. This sing, Country Roads, Annie's Song, Calipso and Sorry were among his greatest hits.
I love John Denver, one of my mum's favourites so grew up listening to him, you WILL know 'Take Me Home Country Roads'...such a clear and beautiful voice, try and catch him live, sounds just the same
We need John Denver more now than ever ..
John Denver was an American treasure, I grew up listening and loving his music
He was a BIG thing in the early 70's across all types of music. We had 3 of his songs played at our wedding in 1975! Tremendous fans.
You will never regret listening to John Denver. I have a wonderful 3-disc album of his greatest hits. Country Roads is my favorite, but I love them all!
I like how you said that John's music makes you feel at peace. I have long felt that his songs, and this one especially, make me feel CONNECTED - to everything. Great reaction, thank you so much for sharing.
