A man named Jacques Cousteau had a boat called the Calypso. He had a television show also. He was famous for diving, filming and oceanographic research. John Denver was invited to spend time on the Calypso and he wrote this song about the experience. I remember watching that episode of the show. I am a die hard John Denver fan for 50 years now. And I loved watching Jacques Cousteau on the Calypso discovering the mysteries of the ocean
He was one of the inventors of the SCUBA system for diving, freeing divers from an air hose from the surface. He was also a noted marine biologist, ocean conservationist, teacher, and oceanographer. This song is in tribute to Cousteau and his ship, the Calypso.
I loved watching those shows, I was lucky enough to have seen John Denver live here in England twice, wonderful experience, love his music. Loved Home Frees version of Take Me Home Country Roads, a great tribute to John ❤
We watched Cousteau every time he was on and lived through his adventures on the Calypso. Excellent program. Thanks for this reaction.
I watched The Show too and I'm also a Fan of John Denver. I Still Have all his Albums. ♥
I remember that show also. I remember John singing an acoustic version of this on his last day aboard the Calypso. Also, there was at the time a Jacques Cousteau interactive museum on the Queen Mary in Long Beach CA, that was a field trip for 5th or 6th graders.
Really wish you had reacted to the official video. It would have given you much more context. The Calypso was the boat of Jacques Cousteau and he had a TV show that most of us watched in our youth. Helped teach us about conservation. John Denver went on this boat with Cousteau many times!!
Calypso wasn't just a ship, it was an oceanic research vessel.
Jacques Cousteau was/is The Grandfather of underwater photography.
And the inventor of the "Aqualung", otherwise known as SCUBA Gear.
And research, flora and fauna!!
I grew up at time when we had weekly she’s by Cousteau, and Marlon Perkins of the St. Louis’s ZOO, mutual of Omaha wild kingdom.
It's difficult for younger generations to understand in this age of instant information. Back in the 60's/70's very few people would have even seen the ocean in person unless you lived near the coasts. We also knew very little of the sea all while we were traveling to the moon. We had 3 channels on TV. But, there was a man (Jacques Cousteau) and his ship Calypso that had these National Geographic specials a few times a year that would explore the undersea world from every corner of the world. We loved it and the crew of the Calypso!
Very well said!
Exactly. I can remember the whole family gathering around the TV set every time one of the specials came on.
Everybody watched his specials, and *everybody* knew who Jacque Cousteau was. It's weird that people don't know who he was, anymore, given how big he and his specials were iin the 60's and 70's. The song moves me every time I hear it.
One of the videos of this song actually shows you a video of the actual ship , Calypso , environmentalist Jacques Cousteau , and beautiful clips of dolphins , whales ..etc .Denver , an environmentalist in his own right , spent time on Calypso with Cousteau .
Yes, I was disappointed that they didn't see this video. Jacques Cousteau was an important part of all our childhoods. We watched him every week!!
John Denver gave all the royalties from the song to The Cousteau Society. He truly gave back to nature.
I like that John wrote this song in the style of a sea shanty that mariners would sing over a pint of ale in the galley. It almost makes it feel like you're on the ship. As a child in the 60s and 70s, I used to look forward to watching "The Undersea World Of Jacques Cousteau" every week. It gave us a glimpse of all the life that lives beneath the surface.
The tears start as soon as the song. John, Jacques, The Calypso, mean a lot to a lot of us.
The day I don’t cry hearing this is the day my heart stopped for good. RIP JOHN, JACQUES, THE CALYPSO!
I cry, every singe time.
John was a national treasure we lost far too soon He has a multitude of hits.
Please more John.
The boat of Jacques Cousteau environmental ship and perseverance. The video is so much better to see maybe you can show it one day. You'll love it
"The Undersea World Of Jacques Cousteau" was as majestic as the song John composed.
I really, *really* miss that show.
Thank you for reacting to this song!! I loved John Denver and Jacques Cousteau as a child. This brings back some memories!! Please react to John's song, "Annie's Song" - I believe you all will love it!! Thanks - keep up the good work!!
Next up should be "Annie's Song", which is also beautifully orchestrated, beautifully sung, and features one of the best love song lyrics of all time. If you like this kind of orchestrated folk sound, you should also listen to the late great Gordon Lightfoot's "If You Could Read My Mind".
John Denver has an endless catalog. One song to really know him is "This Old Guitar "
His falsetto soars on this one. Powerful voice, powerful advocate for the environment.
I was raised with this! Jacques Cousteau, Wild America, Cosmos, Nova ...etc! John Denver was not only an amazing musician but an amazing NATURIST! Sir David Attenborough is as amazing as him in educating people in how important our interaction with nature is, and making us aware of how we can help as well as prevent harm!
Calypso was the name of Jacque Cousteau's ship. John Denver sailed with Jacque Cousteau several times on research missions.
A truly beautiful song about one of the greatest scientists of the last century, Jacques Cousteau. The father of Oceanography. A French national treasure. Scientist, conservationist, explorer, and so much more.
Wish we still had him here
Others have already explained the name of "Calypso", but one interesting item is that when John joined Cousteau on the Calypso and SCUBA dove with him. But since John had such bad eyesight Jacques designed a mask with his eyeglasses prescription so he could see while diving. This song transports you to the sea and can imagine the dolphins swimming right next to you.
This has always been my favorite John Denver song, and that's saying a lot. Because John has such a huge catalog of amazing songs. I grew up John's music in my house, and remember fondly watching the Jaques Cousteau TV show as a kid. Seeing all the different sea animals each week was so cool to me. May the both RIP. 🥺🛥🐬🐳🦭🦈
Just to add ...a song on Denver s Wildlife Concert , found online , " For You " probably the most romantic song you will EVER hear ......has Denver playing piano .....a talent I did not know he had . Worth a look .!!!
Love this song,too!❤️
Before the likes of Discovery channel and Smithsonian channel taking us below the waves, all we had was French oceanographer Jacque Cousteau and his ship Calypso to show us what we never dared dream we'd see in the ocean.
Yes! Never missed it as a kid.
Sadly this video is not the one featuring footage of 'The Calypso' the ship Jacques Cousteau sailed the World in exploring the ocean's and bringing to our homes every week on TV. As a scuba diver I owe that to Jacques Cousteau as he invented SCUBA, everyone was pretty much a hard hat diver before. He had a cool Manta Ray like sub as well. He loved the oceans.
The beat is patterned off a sea shanty and works so well with this song. His voice is also soaring in this song. The cymbals rising sound like waves splashing on the bow of a ship.
This is my favourite John Denver song, and I love pretty much everything he’s done.
The official video to this explains so much what this song is about..
His son Phillipe carries on with his fathers legacy of exploration and learning of the earth and how to respect it and showing us what an awesome world of beauty and wonderment we live in the planet the human race calls home.
Tribute to the great Jacques Cousteau and his magnificent ship.
John Denver has been one of my favorite singer/songwriters since I first heard "Take Me Home Country Roads". I play his albums when I need inspiration or am driving in beautiful natural areas. He has so many hits and fantastic songs that people will mention but there is one called "Rhymes and Reasons" that resonates so much with what's going on in the world today and then gives hope. I hadn't heard it in a long time, then heard it on the radio and just burst into tears. It's really beautiful and so meaningful. John know how to touch a piece of one's soul. Great job!
Wish you would’ve reacted to the video version instead of just the audio. You’ll see tree hugger John Denver alongside sea explorer Jacques Cousteau. The type of song is called Nautical or Sea Shanty. Jacques Cousteau was a well respected oceanographer. The Calypso was his famous research ship. Together with the crew they took us in their ocean adventures in their very popular tv series
You miss a-lot if you do not see the original video. Cousteau was a pioneer in marine biology and oceanography and his television specials were a huge part of my life growing up. Of course his ship CALYPSO was legendary.Cousteau and his team converted it to a research vessel from a surplus navy mine sweeper. Cousteau was one of the original inventors/developers of today's SCUBA diving equipment that made under sea exploration possible for millions.
John Denver was an environmentalist and simply the best folk singer of his time.
My first concert was John Denver, 1975, around when this song was played a lot on the radio. I remember sitting through the concert just hoping, wishing, willing him to play Calypso. He did near the end, I was a happy 12 y.o. boy. Got to see him again maybe a year before he passed.
A song of his that seems to be overlooked by reactors is Matthew. Great song.
John was a straightforward, gracious, and sincere person, as you could see from his on stage demeanor. He appeared on TV a lot, like on "The Muppet Show," and again played a very earnest lead character in the movie "Oh, God!" I doubt he was flawless, but he had such a squeaky clean public image it was almost a parody. As for Cousteau, he was very famous for his nonprofit work. He co-invented the SCUBA / Aqua-Lung. His shows were regularly watched on PBS, from '66 to '82. I think a shared opinion between Cousteau and Denver was that "The glory of nature provides evidence that God exists." The Bill Murray comedy "The Life Aquatic with Steve Zissou" is very loosely based on Jacques Cousteau.
Some of the best Oceanography ever seen were displayed by Cousteau & his team
I used to watch Jaques Cousteau as a kid. John became good friends with him because of their shared love of nature and environmental protection. Great song! Please listen to John Denver's song "Annie's Song." It's one of the most beautiful love songs ever. Also, one of his most famous songs.
Yeah, Annie's Song is one of my favorites. Also, Grandmas Featherbed and Uncle Matthew. Ive loved everyone of John's songs. All different in their own way. And well worth listening to.
In Greek mythology, Calypso was a nymph who lived on the island of Ogygia, where, according to Homer's Odyssey, she detained Odysseus for seven years.
I saw John about 15 times in concert this song always got a standing ovation
When i was in jr high school in the early 70's, watching the Jacques Cousteau tv specials were a must watch and make a book report on for an extra A on your science class grade at the end of the semester.
Another home run! Glad you appreciate Denver's songs. Hope 2024 brings you much more success
🙏 - You too!
Cousteau's adventures were brought to us by National Geographic tv specials throughout the 70s. Cutting edge underwater photography of that time.
I saw Denver live in 1975. It was absolutely the best concert I had ever been to. I've been to many rock concerts since. It's still the best concert I have been to. Denver did not need autotune. They used very little effects on his voice.
I was a member of the Cousteau Society. Jacques Ives Cousteau was Ana amazing man. He actually was the inventor of the aqualung. Its unfortunately they couldn't save the Calypso, it was far too damaged to save.
It was the name of French Oceanographer Jacques Cousteau’s work vessel
"Calypso" was the B-side song for the "I'm Sorry" 45 record.."I'm Sorry" went #1 on the US Billboard Weekly Pop Chart in Sept. '75, ...and then...
Ppl started digging "Calypso" on the flip side of the 45, which kept the record at #2 on the pop chart for another 3 weeks in October.
"I'm Sorry/Calypso" ended as the #4 song(s) on the US Billboard Year-End Top-100 Chart for 1975
You should search for John Denver's duet with Cass Elliot ("Mama Cass" from The Mamas & the Papas) singing "Leaving on a Jet Plane" on the Midnight Special TV show. It's amazing. Watch it for yourself. Both have legendary voices.
Jacques-Yves Cousteau and engineer Emile Gagnan developed the first successful scuba diving system. The device, known as the "Aqua-Lung," allowed divers to breathe underwater using a self-contained underwater breathing apparatus (SCUBA)
I hope your next song of his, is Thank God I'm A Country Boy. No other song, in his catalog, sounds like it. I can almost guarantee you'll be clapping your hands, tapping your foot, or moving in some way, during the song. I don't normally like when a live version of a song is reacted to. But, this is an exception. If you do it, please do a live version.
The bell you hear is the ships bell on the Calypso. Just for fun, you should also check out Thank God, Im a Country Boy and Grandmas Feather Bed.
Any kid who grew up in the 70's knows the Calypso, her captain and her crew.
I just learned of his inspiration for this song, less than a week ago. I've been a huge fan of his music, since the early 70s.
Oh you should have watched it with the video! Totally different experience!!!
it's funny. I have loved this song for decades now, and right now, as I listened, I realized, especially in the yodeling part, it's a sea shanty! Well, sort of, but it definitely had that vibe I had never realized before. Thank you for sharing your reaction! May we take care of the earth and all her creatures!
It’s all about the boat the Calypso and the Underwater Photographer Jaques Cousteau, a pioneer in his field!💖
This isn’t a story or a Disney film. This is really life. Denver and Cousteau became friends and he spent time with him on his exploration vessel Calypso.
Should have done a little more research before or done the video. Rest In Peace John Denver and Jacques Cousteau
65th John Denver was my Teen years in the 70's ..... he was a special person.... gone to soon...great song....makes you SEE the Boat / the water / the full visual...
Dang! A month late on this. Watched many shows with this vessel! The Undersea World Of Jaques Cousteau. Other great Denver songs; Sunshine On My Shoulder, Annie's Song and Leaving On A Jet plane! Peace 🕊️☮️♾️😎
calypso was also refered to in the pirates of the carribean movies as an ocean goddess.
Yesyesyesyesyes!!!! I love this song!! Do you all remember Jacques Cousteau?? I think he was on every week. But we loved to watch him. John was good friends with him and always has been advocate for environmental issues.
I find it feels like an old sea shanty....
Jacques Cousteau created the Aqualung Scuba self contained underwater breathing apparatus
Nice reaction as usual so thank you both! I understand you were both recently up here in the Great White North and I am sorry if I cut in front of you at Tim Horton's or took your seats at the curling rink, or forgot to give you a call, eh? Before you are done with your journey through the music of the great John Denver be sure you react to "Annie's Song" one fine day!!
He was on the Muppet Show many times ❤
Jacques Cousteau was the first to show us the undersea world. He invented the "aqua lung" and the equipment that could take us as individuals under the sea. (Previously, there were submersibles, but not personal breathing aparatus like what he invented). In the 60's he had documentary shows showing where he went and the world he explored. John Denver went on a cruise with him and this was his tribute to Jacques Cousteau and his ship, the Calypso. FOr those of us who grew up with his documentaries, we share this passion so incredibly expressed in this song.
Check out the version here on YT of John doing Calypso with the Tanglewood Choir & Boston Pops. The video quality isnt great BUT seeing him doing it live with the backing of a whole orchestra is awesome & totally worth it, despite the slight lack of crispness of the video.
When that song came out I think in the 1980s everyone knew exactly where the title came from, it was so obvious not one would even think to ask that question. Today, for example it someone wrote a song about 9/11 or maybe the "spy balloon" everyone would know, but a generation later many people do not know.
If you take a cruise out of Galveston, you will more likely than not visit Belize. I believe that this song was composed by John Denver there when on the Calypso, the research vessel led by Jacques Cousteau. If we could all be naturalists like both of them.
could you do the CARPENTERS - SUPERSTAR or CLOSE TO YOU please please please i beg
In the late 1960 and early 1970s there would be an occasional Jacques Cousteau documentary during family time on TV. These docs were often narrated by Rod Serling. They may still be posted on RUclips and are worth watching especially if you love shows about the ocean. Jacques Cousteau and his team made many contributions to ocean science.
If you want an even different side to John listen to Thank God I’m a Country Boy.
I've been a JD fan since 1973-4. I received my first album for high school graduation. This is my second favorite song. My first is "The Eagle and the Hawk". You should watch the official video of this song. He would have celebrated his 80th birthday this past Sunday, Dec. 31.
The official video shows John Denver aboard the Calypso with Cousteau.
Calypso was a surplus WW2 minesweeper, modified for the Monoco Oceanographic Institute. Sadly after Jacques passed away, the ship was abandoned at the dock. the wooden hull rotted and it sank at the pier.
However, it is now being restored to sail again.
She was actually hit by a barge in Singapore and sank there. She's been raised and towed to France, where the restoration is being attempted.
John Denver, so many different sounds, all with a little country vibe. Truly a steward of the world God has given us. One of the best storytellers of all time in music, every song has a story/message.
Was there a reason you couldn’t react to the video?
John Denvers music just sets the environment to calm, quiet, introspective and free. Thank you for the music John.
Yes, if you could listen again with the video, will give even more of the story he is singing.
This song combined John Denver's two passions. Music and wildlife conservation. It's a tribute to Jaques Cousteau and his research vessel Calypso. Cousteau was the most prominent ocean conservation voice of the era and Denver was a huge fan of his work and message.
Jacques Cousteau's Ship is Calypso! I wish more exploration of the sea was done .Great tribute to Cousteau' his crew and ship.Great song! Y'all should do "Annie's song" next.
The official video includes footage of the Calypso, Jacques Cousteau and the crew, along with beautiful footage of marine life. Jacques Cousteau was incredible, you should look up some of his documentaries, they are very educational and entertaining. He co-invented the first successful open-circuit self-contained underwater breathing apparatus, called the Aqua-Lung, which assisted him in producing some of the first underwater documentaries.
Man what wonderful voice, John Denver at his best. You might want to try another take on Calypso... try the one by Suzanne Vega, wildly different but with just as many layers.
The video would have been better.
This is my favorite John Denver song ... because it was about Jacques Cousteau and his ship. I loved "The Undersea World of Jacques Cousteau" ... he was a great explorer and conservationist.
Please check out Chris Melanson from Moncton New Brunswick Canada the song is Room's For Rent it is the best REAL country song i have heard in a long time it was released in Spetember 2022
They actually became really good friends, after Jacques invited John to sail with him. They had met a short time earlier.
Theres some beautiful cinematography in the video with underwater scenes as well as of Calypso and her crew.
You simply do not understand who Jacques Cousteau was. He invented the air tanks for divers in the 1920's. Do your research. Find the video like other reviews. John Denver was on this ship the Calypso. very shallow review. You are the ones that need to learn. Thank You.
Calypso matters. ❤
A friend got to see him in concert in the 70's in Los Angeles. He used a full orchestra as backup to his band. He was also a master guitarist, rated one of the best in the world at that time.
this was john's tribute to famed french oceanographer/explorer/conservationist jacques cousteau whose ship was named calypso. john went aboard on a voyage and was so moved by the experience he composed this fabulous song. jacques also developed the SCUBA (self-contained underwater breathing apparatus) gear for diving.
i always loved how this was developed as a sea shanty, so befitting as a sea-faring homage ❤
Another great song off this album is "Late Night Radio". It takes many of us back to when we were kids and had a transistor radio tucked under our pillows to hear the latest music of the late 60's and 70's. Love your take on all you do.
Just...........tears.
it's too bad you aren't watching the video version of this where he is actually ON the Calypso with Jacques Cousteau, with the dolphins swimming along with the ship...you'd understand better, NOTHING to do with "DISNEY" or "King" Iger!!
Guys are so cool❤❤
You mention hearing something you can't really pinpoint. One thing might be part of the percussion, which is done by the incomparable Hal Blaine. He does something in the yodel part of the chorus with the cymbals that make it sound like waves crashing. Listen carefully and you will hear it.
Please do react to Darryl Ong Sam Mangubat Gigi de Lana and Katrina Velarde My grown up Christmas list cover
BEAUTIFUL SONG BY A WONDERFUL MAN!!!! TEARS!!!! FOR A REAL FUN SONG ID SUGGEST THANK GOD IM A COUNTRY BOY!!!GOD HAS A WONDERFUL MAN TO SING FOR HIM!!!!
It's unfortunate that you didn't react to the video. It was full of amazing clips of John with Dr Cousteau on board the calypso. They were very close friends and there's a feature film documentary they did together that is definitely worth tracking down and watching.
Annie's Song!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
