Hello Angela: This is a tribute to Jacques Cousteau the famous oceanographer, his crew and his research vessel Calypso. John Denver went out on an exploratory cruise with them, and later created this song to commemorate the experience. Cousteau was also the inventor of the SCUBA tank and he is credited with broadening our understanding of ocean life.
Jacques Cousteau and his ship and crew spent a lifetime tirelessly researching and advocating for our planet's oceans and ocean life. This has got to be one of the most deserved and finest-written tribute songs in history. Beautiful!!!
I used to watch 'The Undersea World of Jaques Cousteau' every week as a teenager and was always fascinated. F.Y.i, David Crosby, an avid sailor and Graham Nash wrote a beautiful song called 'Critical Mass: To the Last Whale' which, along with footage obtained from the Cousteau Society they would sing at their performances. It's definitely worth checking out.
Yes I watched it as well - - It only came on a few times a year and in the rural community I lived everyone huddled around the single TV in the house to what the adventures aboard the Calypso. For many of us the love of natural science grow because of that program.
John Denver. A very majestic, singer, songwriter, story teller. So many great songs in his catalog. You should listen to his duet with, Olivia Newton John. "Fly Away'.
Love this song!! RV Calypso is a former British Royal Navy minesweeper converted into a research vessel for the oceanographic researcher Jacques Cousteau, equipped with a mobile laboratory for underwater field research.
The Calypso was the ocean going research vessel Captained by Jacques Cousteau. There was a number of documentaries produced between the 60's and 80's that recorded the work of him, his sons, and the crew. The cool thing I remember is he had one of the first deep dive submarines in the world. Very interesting shows. I think they might have been produced by The National Geographic Society, but I'm not certain about that.
The Undersea World of Jacques Cousteau was a popular show in the 1970s. Cousteau's vessel was called the Calypso.Cousteau and John Denver were friends and Denver went on some of the expeditions. When this song was popular, I dreamt of a career as a marine biologist... I loved the Cousteau shows and this song had a special meaning for me. It's still one of my favorite John Denver songs.
This song resemble a sea shanty to commemorate Jacques Cousteau's ship. They added so much to our knowledge of the creatures of the sea. If they build a Hall Of Fame of ocean researchers, Jacques Cousteau would definitely be one of the first inducted into it.
This one of my top favorite John Denver songs. When I listen to this, I imagine standing on the bow of the Calypso as it crashes through the ocean waves. Such a beautiful song. Thank you for the reaction!
This Song is SO energizing! John wrote it about his experiences on an Oceanographic Cruise with a World Renowned Oceanographer (Jacques Cousteau) aboard Cousteau's ship, the Calypso. If you need a wonderful John Denver "Cool Down" Song, He did a duet with Olivia Newton John called "Fly away"... so mellow.
I'm 56. Many of us my age grew up watching the great voyager and adventurer Jacque Cousteaus. It was a magical show. John Denver dedicated this song to the great ship, forever sailing the seas, Calypso 💖
It is written like a sailor’s sea shanty like a sing-along and you can imagine a whole bar full of people doing those yodel-ay-ooo’s together. Great tribute to Jacques Cousteau’s ship the calypso
As many have stated, this song was a tribute to the Calypso, the ship owned by Jacques Cousteau and used as the centerpiece of the show "The Undersea World of Jacques Cousteau" which aired back in the late 60's and early 70's. John Denver of course was big into nature which led him to become involved with and friends with Jacques. John Denver spent some time on the Calypso which then inspired him to write this song, about the ship and it's purpose. John Denver's intention was to inspire the feelings of a "Sea Shanty" type song, which I think he did very well. I can see people raising their beer steins and swinging them to the music much like the pirates of old.
As a child every week me and my dad would lay on the couch at the end of the day and watch Jacques Cousteau. I grew up in a BIG commercial fishing family and so we have a great respect for the ocean and the work Jacques Cousteau did to bring that love to millions who never would have seen anything it had to offer. His boat the MV Calypso was a marvel at the time and in tribute to his respect for Cousteau my dad named our biggest and best Crabber FV Calypso. This song was near and dear to us both. I am glad you enjoyed it.
Great choice! Memories of the family gathered around the TV on a Sunday evening when I was a kid, waiting to see where the Calypso and Jacques and the crew would be this week in the latest episode of 'The Undersea World of Jacques Cousteau'...in the days when there were only three TV channels to choose from!!
I'm 65 now and I remember the Jacques Cousteau specials they were incredible back then then when I was in college I used to work at the universal Amphitheater concerts and I would see all the concerts and John Denver came and sang this song of course I heard it before then because it was a big hit for him but to see him do it live and all of the it's like he was on his ship or something I forget the everything that was going on in the concert but it was awesome I'll never forget
Surprise! John Denver writes and sings a sea chanty with some yodeling thrown in. He was such an amazing and incredibly talented singer/songwriter. He voice is wonderful.
I loved watching Jacques Cousteau's explorations. I still remember when The Calypso was introduced into the expeditions and this was specifically written in honor of that vessel.
I have said this about you before bit your love of music .......... all types and genres ........... is my favorite thing about your channel. I loved this song years ago but have not heard it in, well, what seems like forever. It kind of gives a sea chanty vibe and is indeed catchy ( I too will be humming this for the next who knows how long. Please continue to get better and take care of yourself -
This song is an homage to Jacques Coousteau, who was a French oceanographic. He helped invent Scuba gear. John Denver and he were friends and he wrote it to honor him and his team.
John was talking about conservative.. Saving our Oceans.... The Calypso was Jaques Coustos ship Heard that John simply sat on the bow and wrote this song SO POINENT....SO BEAUTIFUL
Just to add, John Denver gave away all the Royalties from this song to the Cousteau Society. Jacques' son has said they were BIG number cheques. Typical of JD.
There’s another great tune dedicated to to the sea mariners and ocean explores, it’s by billy Joel called Downeaster Alexa. Actually it’s about fishermen. The ship was called the Downeaster Alexa . Love the reaction BTW.
Angela, well finally a John Denver song you actually like. This is a tribute to Jacques Cousteau and his crew aboard the Calypso, a sea research vessel that explored the mysteries of our oceans. John and Jacques became life long friends and, as John was a noted environmentalist (long before that became a thing) he wrote this song. Another Top 10 hit for my favorite musical artist of all time. RIP JD, you are truly missed.
Wow. I didn't think you would like this song. Fly Away (with Olivia Newton John), Sunshine are just a couple JD songs that would good to take a listen to IMO.
I play and sing at least a dozen of John's songs and this is one of them!! John got me started playing guitar 45+ years ago. One of my favorites is "This Old Guitar" i know how he felt being a guitarist myself
When I was young, I watched Mr. Jacques Cousteau's many documentaries of his voyages of exploration which were presented by 'National Geographic'..... I dreamed of going on those trips... To me, this song that John penned honoring the man, his ship Calypso and her crew, is as wild and free as the oceans they sailed. That almost yodeling Mr. Denver does in this song is as beautiful as the sea. God's Peace to all here ✌
yeah remembr v hook line frm 70s whn i was a kid, 20 yrsa go i listend to v lyrics 4 v first timen was blown away by v content n psche of john, ahead of his time na true human, n his thoguhts of vis planet reflect mine, fantastic stuff n his vlice- wow such a fine singer n songwriter.

Hi again, this is such a beautiful song. Helping us understand the ocean and its beautiful creatures. I lived in florida most of my life, I love the ocean and all the worst and the best it give .
BRAVO BRAVO BRAVO ANGELA!!!!!! It is about the boat the Calypso!! Stephen Lutz got it right on! Angela, listen to the voice of John Denver. Talk about one of the greatest vocalists I have ever heard. Listen to how long he holds a note. Pitch perfect. Try not to over think a song until you hear it all. John Denver was a guy who loved all animals and nature. Unfortunately, he died in a plane crash BUT, this is HIS legacy. What he left behind for all of us to listen to. God bless you John.

I wonder just how many scientists of many fields studying nature were inspired by two of my favorite childhood shows : mutual of omahas wild kingdom and the undersea world of jacques cousteau? Rest in peace marlin, jim, and jacqeus....thank you for showing me the world of nature and animals
@dayonereacts ...did you post this because it is the 25th anniversary of Jacques's death (June 125, 1997) .... I loved watching his specials. Sadly, John Denver died a few months after as well .... RIP Jacques and John.
Jacques Cousteau studying the oceans with the crew of the Calypso name of their ship. . They use to show Documentaries of the deep oceans with all the fish, creatures there.
There's a great episode of Mike and Molly when all the male characters end up on the roof to clean the gutters ...some how a six pack of beer made it up there..and they start singing the aye yay Dee Doo Doo of this song. 🤣🤣🤣..at the end of episode the grandma comes up ladder to check progress...and just when they think their in trouble..she belts out the chorus and all join in..🤣
I am glad you found John Denver,,, would like to suggest a change of pace. Play The Bridgemen 2006 part 4. Its called Drum and Bugle Corps, played by people younger than 22. This is a reunion, so old timers. If you like this, check out other corps. Just a note, after 1980 or so, they started to change the rules, became more broadway and eventually no longer needed to use bugles but could replace with trumpets. Marching drill became dance, lost my zest then, so I watch the older ones. Hope you try and think you will enjoy!. Thanks for your time. one last thing John Denver is a poet who makes music, beautiful stuff, and fun stuff and serious stuff, ir Annie's Song.
2 SENSATIONAL songs by John Denver I would recommend are Prisoners (up-tempo) and ln the Grand Way (ballad). Both are more obscure songs of his, but just incredible music!

This is what you watched back then as there was no Discovery Channel
I used to watch him all the time as a kid.
Cousteau sparked many young persons interest in science and exploration .
Love your beautiful bright smile 😊
John also turned all rights to the song to the Cousteau Society.
Jacques Cousteau and his ship and crew spent a lifetime tirelessly researching and advocating for our planet's oceans and ocean life. This has got to be one of the most deserved and finest-written tribute songs in history. Beautiful!!!
I'm glad that Jacques isn't around to see where our oceans and environment are headed now. It would probably crush that wonderful spirit of his.

Totally agree!

When you hear Denver's sing you can almost see Dolphins swimming aside the the Calypso!
I saw him in concert when he did this beautiful song
I forgot to mention, Calypso was the name of Cousteau's boat.
Imagine John sitting on the deck bow writing singing the song as dolphins splash by the ship as it sails along.

Nice voice Angela. I was surprised you liked it to. One of the big songs back in the best days.
That was from the mid70$. He was VERY popular. You should do “Annie’s Song “next. He wrote that for his wife.
Australian singer Jason Owen has done an update of this
calypso is the boat, cousteau is the captain he had a tv show that made videos of the ocean and sea life
The Cousteau Society is still active, promoting ocean understanding and preservation.

I'm with you. The verses are rather mundane, but then the chorus comes in and hits you like a sucker punch.
Purely a thing of beauty
I didn't know you could dance like a pirate...good video
Beautiful song!
Great yodelling in the verse. You should check out some of the great british sea shanty tunes, they became all the rage during lockdown. Luv your smile and the moves as always Angela.

Way before the utter garbage called "reality shows", before "Gold Rush", "The Search for Oak Island", "Expedition Unknown" and the rest of the crap that's on TeeVee right now, there were weekly TV shows that actually showed something interesting, fascinating and showed people that really cared about Stewardship of the Earth...
