It is 2023, and it has been a while since hearing this song. I started to happily sing along, but it is very difficult to sing when the tears are flowing and the throat chokes up because your heart is so full of the wonder and beauty of the images on the screen and the beauty of the words of the song. This video needs to be put into the hall of fame. I was always mesmerized by the Jacques Cousteau TV specials, and always loved hearing and singing along with John Denver. This video brings together two people who were brilliant at what they did, and loved and cared about nature and life.
John Denver was a true lover of nature. He went to the Whitehouse at least twice asking to campaign to preserve more than 100 million acres of wild public land in Alaska. And asking to be careful with oil pipelines
I'll be 65 years old in November and don't have many years left to live but people my age grew up when beautiful people who had hearts of Gold was around in this country it sucks the way this country is today
You've lived far more than 99.99% of people have. You made the most of it, for both the world and yourself. I've never really worshipped heros, but people like you I truly admire.
Legit teared up with this one. I can vaguely recall watching Jacques Cousteau as a child (I was 4 when it first aired), and "Calypso" is such a beautiful song. RIP Jacques & John; you are both truly missed, even all these years later.
Crying right along with you. Goosebumps arising from hearing a song are proof enough there is a part of us inside connected to something bigger than us, though I see no one religion as being right but rather the Goosebumps connection as all the extra sprit I need
Aw you guys all have me crying now too. I grew up watching the Jacques Cousteau, and John Denver's song is just a joyous celebration of his adventures!
Every time I hear this song it brings tears, John Denver loved life so much and and saw the beauty and could express it in song, ever since I was young I loved hearing him and still do. He was such a gifted singer and glad he shared his songs with us.
Our world is so much emptier for the two of them being gone. We need a new John Denver, a new Jacques Cousteau, a new Carl Sagan to enlighten and inspire the youth of the world.
A fitting tribute to a true scientist, researcher and teacher who devoted his life to the study and conservation of the ocean and its denizens. The world today needs more like him. RIP Jacques Cousteau; the contributions you made to this planet will always be remembered.
Jacques Cousteau was and is my hero. John Denver was and always will be a part of my heart. This is the most beautiful song. I would get in my Jeep put the top down and hit the highway blasting this song and singing my heart out. RIP You two beautiful Amazing Spirits. I miss you so very much. 💕💕🦋🦋😪
Love jacque. Used to watch the tv programs as a child with my dad who liked to travel and loved nature( part Cherokee, and proud of it!) Revere and take care of our planet, and it will provide for u!
I could have written the same thing though you’re probably a bit younger. John passed on my daughters birthday (10/12)….day after mine. Enjoy your day. 🌤
I remember the year that Calypso was released John was on his annual tour. He came to the Scope in Norfolk, VA. He has a back screen projector showing this video as he sung for us. 11,000 people became completely silent and watched and listened. When it was over the place literally erupted into a standing ovation and lots of praises being sent to John and Jacque. Now almost 50 years later I sit and watch and listen and the same feelings came flooding back. RIP John and Jacque for your spirit and caring.
I so agree with you , Cousteau brought so much of the things we only heard or dreamt about home to us . As for men / women today, the world is full of greedy people who think immaterial things are important . When that final moment arrives , all the money , cars , big houses and top medical treatment wont save you ....time then to reflect .
So true! I think everyone's goal should be live on this beautiful and unique planet WITHOUT leaving a trace after they move on so others can enjoy it in all its pristine splendor!
Not to be a contrarian, but John Denver would be outed in todays cancel-culture world for being an imposter since John often flew his Lear jet from gig to gig.
Sadly the family has splintered badly over ownership and rights to the J C foundation. Fabian the grandson, he just does his own conservation work,he doesnt seem get into the family politics, he does lectures , and organises clean ups and has the cool unflappable jacques grit and determination. He also built underwater research station
Book report to be written as a 13 year old! I chose Jacques and the Calypso. What a beautiful report I was able to get info all around! That was back in 1963! Got an A anyhow! RIP marvelous men😊😢❤ 3:39 3:39
this was the music video that inspired me to become an underwater filmmaker. I remember tears welling up in my eyes when I saw it premiered at a film festival in Miami. This was made before there was such a thing as music videos.
I grew up watching Jacques Cousteau on TV, and listening to John Denver on the radio. This song brings tears to my eyes, the beauty that both men shared with us of the planet we live on. Thank you to both, may you rest in peace, knowing you left the world a better place than you entered.
My father deeply loved and respected the ocean that we were blessed to live by. He was an avid scuba diver and was like a kid glued to the tv set when the Jacques Cousteau show would come on (circa, late 1960s), whereas he ordinarily would have no use for 'the box.' We watched alongside him because the show was pleasant, informative and Mr. Cousteau had an inspiring method of imparting his own love of the ocean and all that is within it. Good memories!
The songs reminds me of my child hood and simpler time and how much of a hurry I was in to grow up..now iam old and I look back and the songs of John denver ...I wish I could have just slowed down and enjoyed my youth 😢
Beautiful, Breathtaking, yes you are so missed. I miss you. They don’t play your music on the radio but I don’t understand because your music is timeless.
grew up watching Jacques Cousteau specials, that was a staple in our house and John Denver had a great voice. Wish we had nature programs like this today.
I just looked at Wikipedia. The “Mutual of Omaha’s Wild Kingdom” that i grew up watching in the 1970’s-1980’s is still being broadcast, Sundays, on RFDTV.
I just listened to this thinking that everyone who knew I loved this song is gone now. And yes, I'm brushing back the tears. He took us on so many wonderful adventures, and taught me so many things that I still hold in my heart.
The words "free as a wind-swell, joyful and loving in letting it be", is well suited to the acrobatic dolphin jumping and twisting in mid air at 2:03. Proof that wild animals also feel joy and elation. What a song! What a singer/songwriter! There will never be another John Denver.
this song is so special to me....I sat with my oldest brother, my hero for life , we always had a close bond with our love for music...as I sat one night in his many hospital stays he ask me to play this song over and over for him . I must have played it for at least a solid hour! he died a few months later how I miss him ....when I play songs like this , he is right beside me once more ...miss you Bo !!! till we see each other again the music will play on ...and on....and on...best brother a girl could have!!!
this another masterpiece from John, a lovely haunting melody and for me the pinnacle of excellence was reached with the glorious sight of a hump back whale broaching !! gone but never ever forgotten ! thank you John 😊
+Rachael Stanton I grew up listen to John. When everyone else was listening to hard rock, I was listening to John! Now when I hear his songs it takes me back in time. Time is so precious for each one of us.....every second is a gift............

My daughter is a schoolteacher and just told me her 3rd grade class is watching his documentaries and loving them! So I went on a search for where to watch them and good news, they are on RUclips! 37 films! What a gift to the world his work is!
Such an exquisitely beautiful song. And I love Jacques Cousteau. I remember him from long ago. What a great proponent of wildlife of the sea!! Truly a great man he is, to be sure.
John believed in natural beauty in everything and he sang from his heart! This is what made him so memorable and I am one that will remember him and all he did for this world. He gave so much and we will always remember him for his beautiful music and for the wonderful person he was and always will be. God be with you John and may you rest in peace.
Darth, The Calypso was no ordinary research ship and Jacques Cousteau was no ordinary researcher. John and Jacques were fast friends. Jacque even had special goggles made for John Denver as his eyesight was so poor. Great friendship.
That TV series featuring Cousteau was fantastic. John was a mountain guy, comfortable at high altitude. Jacques was the seafarer, comfortable in the depths below sea level. Both showed great appreciation for our world. I sure miss these guys!
Ive always tried to keep the Environment clean when im out in it...Johns love for life with the outdoors exemplifies his music. I had just finished up fishing on the day he died...My wife came up to me at home that day and gave me a hug and said "Im Sorry" From that point on I always took a day off from work and walked the streams where I live thinking of John..Life is truly precious so I learned after his death... RIP John Denver.
I watched Jacques Ives Cousteau & Calypso's expeditions & adventures without fail Mr Cousteau showed us so much. Thank You John Denver for this beautiful song for both👍🏽
I vividly remember Jacques Cousteau and his son Phillipe. He opened the entire world to the wonders of compressed air diving for the masses. I saw him at Loyala University in New Orleans when I was 17. Unforgettable! RIP to both.❤❤
Philippe Cousteau Jr. has his own show that I watch every Friday called Exploration Awesome Planet. Philippe has continued the work of his father and grandfather by educating the public about oceanic environmental and conservation issues.
@@rbaker214 He owned a WW II PBY Catalina amphibious aircraft, got careless, before doing a water landing, and killed himself and others. I know this because I am type rated in the PBY. He failed to ensure that the nose wheel doors were closed prior to doing a water landing. It was inexcusable. He was a fine young man. RIP.
I know this wonderful and special people like the Cousteaus and beautiful singers like John Denver are in heaven feeling how much they are still loved ..thank You Jacques for opening our eyes to the beauty of our world’s oceans.. and John Denver thank You for Your songs and beautiful talents.
My HEROES. Went to Texas A&M to become a Meteorological Oceanographer. Life got in the way. Still, Open Water Diver. I can name 250 species of Shark. I loved this man, and cried when his son got killed in a gyrocopter accident. Thank You, Jaques! And, Thank You, Mr. Denver for allowing everyone see their dedication through your music.
There are men like them but our government keeps them quiet and doesn't make it known or televised daily crap you'll get his from.cnn when they're traipsing around the desert chasing soldiers and ask them why they served and why they're dying you know stupid questions because everyone likes to go to a lot of race to see accidents
Wow, glad to know I'm not alone getting emotional watching and listening to this timeless masterpiece. Jacques Cousteau and John Denver were my heroes ❤️
I have been 'Whale Watching' in Massachusetts twice and both times I was in tears as I watched the beautiful Whales and Dolphins having fun as they leapt in and out of the water. I am also in tears every time I watch the beautiful video and listen to John Denver sing Calypso. Along with many many other people, I miss Jacques😢and John 😥very much.
One of the most fascinating evenings I've ever spent was listening to Michael Costeau talk about the future of our oceans. The song has the rhythm of the sea. I can feel a deck beneath my feet when I listen to it.
THANK YOU soooo much for producing this wonderful film. I"m a STEM Teacher and, while I'm not allowed to have "screen time" films in class, I have communicated a recommendation to the parents that they locate this on their own computers. IT'S MARCH, 2020 - Coronavirus has most of us sheltering in place; this is a GREAT time to show children this uplifting video. HEALTH & JOY TO ALL!!
So well done, a beautiful tribute to a wonderful human being who did so very much to shine a light our wonderful oceans and the gifts therein and, such a beautiful and compassionate song by John Denver - thank you.
Jacques Cousteau - environmentalist, oceanographer, inventor of the aqua lung - was joyful in spirit, along with his crew, as the song lyrics say. They explored with awe and respect for all living beings. May Jacques Cousteau's legacy live forever and John Denver's lyrics too!
Before I discovered David Attenborough, I used to watch Jacques Cousteau's specials..... oh! how I loved them all... and this song by John Denver condensed all the emotions I used to feel when I watch those specials... beautiful song.
quotes from Mr Cousteau: "Water and air, the 2 essential fluids on which all life depends, have become garbage cans" 'when one man... has the opportunity to lead such an extraordinary life, he has not right to keep it to himself" Thank Jaques, thank you for the calypso and your son who continues your work
these things are very true and i don't want to be that man I want to be in the truth of all things. For God is Love an understanding Keep me in the palm of your hand lord i pray for your help in this matter. In the name of Jesus i pray. A men
This was one of mom's favorite songs by John Denver. I had the opportunity of a lifetime, by getting to see him live in concert . When she passed away in 2003, we played John's music in the background. I also had a chance to sing "Perhaps Love," her other favorite song. I miss her very much.
So inspiring and uplifting. I remember watching every episode of Jaques Cousteau amd calypso when I was a boy. It was great and for some reason have just watched again calypso being rebuilt and some episodes. Curiously I went on to dive and became a recreational instructor. I worked in the Caribbean as a dive guide. I also went on to become a singer songwriter and played country roads in my sets. John Denver was a huge inspiration. I wish I could be part of this somehow 😢. This song is incredible, it all sad he died as he did. I’m not a very successful singer songwriter but I did work at it and got commissioned to write a small piece for radio station and could hardly believe I did live dream if only for a very short time. The British government actually are blocking me from both activities and my struggles go on. Peace to both these amazing people and calypso 🙂🙏👋🔥🔥
ShadowsGathered That makes us about the same age. I bought the album and sang along in my living room. Man, I used to really let it rip. I loved singing with John. Farewell, Andromeda.
High Calypso! I sing to your spirit, the places you’ve been to, the stories you tell. High Calypso! I sing to your spirit, the men who have served you so long and so well.
While in the Navy and sailing in the Pacific Ocean, a whale surfaced about 100 feet from my ship. It swam next to us for about 10 minutes and the entire crew got a good look at it. I don't know what kind of whale it was but it was very big and had barnacles on it. It was looking at us and just swimming along. Then it sounded and disappeared beneath the waves. All of us were absolutely awestruck by this magnificent creature. To this day it remains the most incredible thing I have ever seen. Sailing on the surface it is easy to forget what life lies below.
Its quite amazing what lies down there, isn't it? That's why its so important to keep it from disappearing so our children and theirs will know the thrill of seeing a creature as huge and wonderful as that swim by them some day
I would give anything for that experience. You're so lucky to have seen that. It just makes me sick to know what is happening to the Marine Life & the Wildlife. Over population continues to destroy it.
It is sad that such a proud vessel is now laid up in a building with no hull, just an empty frame, rusting away. I think that someone should get their crap together and restore her to her former glory.
A good friend who has passed away a few years ago was a marine engineer and served aboard Calypso for a few cruises. The pics and stories he had made our group of friends fairly jealous. Sean - hope to meet you in Fiddler's Green!
I happily sing along with this song when ever I hear it. The visuals in this are amazing and stunning. I can remember watching the Under Sea World of Jacques Cousteau on TV the world he showed me still stays with me. He showed us the beauty of Nature and told us we need to protect it. I watch this and tears come to my eyes at the sheer beauty of the natural world around us. Sadness come to because we are destroying it and once it's gone so are we.
I love this song. I remember Cousteau as a child. Which is one reason I became a scuba diver. Under the water is another beautiful, quiet world. When my Amazon Parrot gets in a bad mood I play this for him and he gets happy
I met Jean Michelle back in the 80's when the Calypso came to Galveston and got to tour the ship. She was a converted Mine Sweeper that was going to be cut up as scrap metal before the navy was convinced to sell her to Jacques Cousteau. Wonderful ship and a Great Tribute to her and her crew. John Denver was a member of the Cousteau Society as well as a great singer/songwriter
I used to hear this song so often on my way to class in my first year of medical school at the University of Cincinnati in 1975. Reminds of that year quite a bit.
Couldn’t have said it better. If you saw this and it didn’t move you then you have no soul. Tried singing but got choked up.

I like your honest appraisal. Sounds like you are an inhabitant of an oceanside. What did Joan Didion say about the sea, if anything?
My dad had this album loved listening to this with him around the stereo thank you Mr Denver god bless you my dad I see enjoying this in heaven 👍

Couldn't agree more. This planet and our oceans are being destroyed. Just makes me sick. Thanks for posting this.

He was an inventor as he co developed the Aqualung/Scuba equipment that to this day is vital for underwater work of all sorts.
How I love this song written and sung by John Denver. However, Jacques Cousteau was not all that angelic as portrayed
Love jacque. Used to watch the tv programs as a child with my dad who liked to travel and loved nature( part Cherokee, and proud of it!) Revere and take care of our planet, and it will provide for u!

Cousteau and Denver were both extraordinary environmentalists. How I wish more men would follow their leads, and celebrate, not desecrate, our planet.

You are so right
Beautiful tribute to Jacques Cousteau, and John Denver's artistic talent is so awesome, his voice is amazing. Gives me chills.
Sadly the family has splintered badly over ownership and rights to the J C foundation. Fabian the grandson, he just does his own conservation work,he doesnt seem get into the family politics, he does lectures , and organises clean ups and has the cool unflappable jacques grit and determination. He also built underwater research station
And the not-to-be heir of his father, M. Phillipe Cousteau, dying tragically young with a robbed fate, maybe by those ancient sea sirens of mythology.
Es emoción cada palabra interpretada!!!!!

I sure wish they'd show the old Jacques Cousteau specials on TV again. That was one of my favorite shows as a kid; right up there with Grizzly Adams
Wasn't that the dude who got eaten by a bear?
Haha. No, different dude.
OldCarWiringGuy
OK.
Soo Line You're thinking of Timothy Treadwell. I very much recommend watching the documentary Grizzly Man - it's really moving.
Did you realize that you can get most of those old specials on RUclips?
When I was a kid, I lived for the Jacques Cousteau specials.
I miss watching them with my dad. My dad taught my sisters and I to appreciate, love and to care for nature. I cannot imagine the day we lose it all
His grandson and wife are continuing his work. Great legacy he left firhis family and our world.

I had just finished up fishing on the day he died...My wife came up to me at home that day and gave me a hug and said "Im Sorry"
From that point on I always took a day off from work and walked the streams where I live thinking of John..Life is truly precious so I learned after his death...
RIP
John Denver.
Still listening to your beautiful song, in 2024 John.
But ….. it’s difficult to sing along, with a lump in my throat.
Bless you JD .
❤️🙏❤️
I watched Jacques Ives Cousteau & Calypso's expeditions & adventures without fail
Mr Cousteau showed us so much.

He owned a WW II PBY Catalina amphibious aircraft, got careless, before doing a water landing, and killed himself and others.
I know this because I am type rated in the PBY.
He failed to ensure that the nose wheel doors were closed prior to doing a water landing.
It was inexcusable.
He was a fine young man.
RIP.
May we never forget Jacques Cousteau and all his men, and family for what they taught us and showed us!!!
Both men are sorely needed in these troubled times. Thank you Jacques and John.
Jacques Cousteau and John Denver were my heroes ❤️
such a artist:)what a voice and personslity.great.one of most talented artist.the music will live forever.
Excellent, SUPERIOR video.
Thank you Jacques, and thank you John.
God Bless them and may they both R.I.P. Both of them were such awesome men.
We must never allow growing knowledge and understanding to rob us of the joy, awe, fear, appreciation and wonder of raw, unbridled nature.
I cry every time I hear this what a beautiful tribute to the LAST man of the sea,
Such an uplifting song.... Feeling down and this just makes all your troubles float away 😊
Memories voice off an angel. Left this world to soon
R.I.P. John - Thanks for showing us the beauty in the world. We miss you. 🐬🐋🐠🐟🐳❤
Beautiful. Just Beautiful! I still cry over John Denver.
We miss you, John
Sunshine in a voice
I wish someone would write a nice song as a tribute to John for leaving us with years of great music and memories 😊
I've always loved this song. I remember watching all those Jacques Cousteau specials on TV when I was in HS.
I am female and was raised with the “gender roles” of the 1970’s.
But i *very badly* wanted to BE Jacques Cousteau!
john and jacque= legends. R.I.P.
Before I discovered David Attenborough, I used to watch Jacques Cousteau's specials..... oh! how I loved them all... and this song by John Denver condensed all the emotions I used to feel when I watch those specials... beautiful song.
Vanlalhlua Chhakchhuak I feel exactly as you do...John put so much passion and emotion into that incredible voice...
I love the ship's bell during this. Takes me back to the first time I heard it during high school in '75.
quotes from Mr Cousteau: "Water and air, the 2 essential fluids on which all life depends, have become garbage cans" 'when one man... has the opportunity to lead such an extraordinary life, he has not right to keep it to himself" Thank Jaques, thank you for the calypso and your son who continues your work
Don't forget bullshit.
these things are very true and i don't want to be that man I want to be in the truth of all things. For God is Love an understanding Keep me in the palm of your hand lord i pray for your help in this matter. In the name of Jesus i pray. A men
When I was a little boy I was watching the documentries of Cousteau Always. I wanted to join them to see how beautifullm our planet is.
What beautiful footage! My favorite song by John, always makes my heart feel lifted
One of my favorite shows, songs and singers from my childhood. They world has changed so much ❤
rest in peace john and Jacque and know we are trying to clean up our mess
loved the jacques cousteau programmes on tv, and this song also.!
Beautiful Song and Video ! Both Gone but Never Forgoteen
I miss you so much Uncle Bob! You treated me like a son that I never experienced! Man, I miss you!
This was one of mom's favorite songs by John Denver. I had the opportunity of a lifetime, by getting to see him live in concert . When she passed away in 2003, we played John's music in the background. I also had a chance to sing "Perhaps Love," her other favorite song. I miss her very much.
How touching. And how the crew of Calypso touched society at large. I can't stop crying.
Absolutely loved watching the Jacques Cousteau tv program back in the 70's in New Zealand.
Oh, how I loved John Denver... I was 19 when this song was released.
ShadowsGathered That makes us about the same age. I bought the album and sang along in my living room. Man, I used to really let it rip. I loved singing with John. Farewell, Andromeda.
young lady, i love in order dogs, whales, all animals, folks who care and whoops my sons who r nice and you
+Katherine Booth wish my photo showed up, im pretty.
+Katherine Booth Hi Katherine. I also love "in the same order". John Denver was such an awesome person who died too young.
+Annabell Brown HUH? Calling herself pretty is NOT porn. Not even close. Geez!
0:20 John, your gone now, your missed, you have really out done yourself. “Beautiful “❤
This brings tears to my eyes no matter how many times I hear it. I really miss both of them. We need more men like them.
High Calypso! I sing to your spirit, the places you’ve been to, the stories you tell. High Calypso! I sing to your spirit, the men who have served you so long and so well.
And women too !!
That's why its so important to keep it from disappearing so our children and theirs will know the thrill of seeing a creature as huge and wonderful as that swim by them some day
Wow. Thank you for sharing such an amazing story with all of us. I enjoyed it 100%.
I would give anything for that experience. You're so lucky to have seen that. It just makes me sick to know what is happening to the Marine Life & the Wildlife. Over population continues to destroy it.
sassy
I agree
Thank you for sharing that beautiful story. The whale must have been a marvelous sight.
What a talent and beautifull man ! Every song has so much feeling and Passion . RIP Dear John 🌹
Dolphins the Angels of the Sea.
Jacques ,was the Man I loved his programme's as a child , happy happy days , even today I call the woollen cap he wore ,a Jacques's hat , great song
I also remember him as a child. And yes, those were such happy days. I hate what this world has turned into. I love the memories.
Beautiful used to watch this man was amazing
It is sad that such a proud vessel is now laid up in a building with no hull, just an empty frame, rusting away. I think that someone should get their crap together and restore her to her former glory.
When Phillip died his father literally lost the will to go on.
Memory off watching this wonderful explorer on TV with mother father
I miss him so much his voice his songs THE WORLD WAS A BETTER PLACE WITH HIM in it
LOVE & MISS
John Denver
Used to Watch ClyPose Program
-&- John's Verify Show
.
Love and miss John,? what about Jacques and his crew, after all the main folk here.
my memories are so great....we should all love and enjoy the love they brought us... we wouldn't be talking about it now.......
You took the words right out of my mouth Becky.
So sweet. Glad it makes your parrot happy.
Thank you Jacques Cousteau ♥ Thank you John Denver ♥ And, thank You, Mother Nature! ♥ Truly an inspiring video...thank you for posting!
Perfect song of the sea! Everytime I watch this, makes me cry. Love this beautiful song & the video.
God's given nature ❤️
I met Jean Michelle back in the 80's when the Calypso came to Galveston and got to tour the ship. She was a converted Mine Sweeper that was going to be cut up as scrap metal before the navy was convinced to sell her to Jacques Cousteau. Wonderful ship and a Great Tribute to her and her crew.
John Denver was a member of the Cousteau Society as well as a great singer/songwriter
I used to hear this song so often on my way to class in my first year of medical school at the University of Cincinnati in 1975. Reminds of that year quite a bit.
