It is 2023, and it has been a while since hearing this song. I started to happily sing along, but it is very difficult to sing when the tears are flowing and the throat chokes up because your heart is so full of the wonder and beauty of the images on the screen and the beauty of the words of the song. This video needs to be put into the hall of fame. I was always mesmerized by the Jacques Cousteau TV specials, and always loved hearing and singing along with John Denver. This video brings together two people who were brilliant at what they did, and loved and cared about nature and life.
John Denver was a true lover of nature. He went to the Whitehouse at least twice asking to campaign to preserve more than 100 million acres of wild public land in Alaska. And asking to be careful with oil pipelines
Legit teared up with this one. I can vaguely recall watching Jacques Cousteau as a child (I was 4 when it first aired), and "Calypso" is such a beautiful song. RIP Jacques & John; you are both truly missed, even all these years later.
Crying right along with you. Goosebumps arising from hearing a song are proof enough there is a part of us inside connected to something bigger than us, though I see no one religion as being right but rather the Goosebumps connection as all the extra sprit I need
Aw you guys all have me crying now too. I grew up watching the Jacques Cousteau, and John Denver's song is just a joyous celebration of his adventures!
I could have written the same thing though you’re probably a bit younger. John passed on my daughters birthday (10/12)….day after mine. Enjoy your day. 🌤

We watched alongside him because the show was pleasant, informative and Mr. Cousteau had an inspiring method of imparting his own love of the ocean and all that is within it. Good memories!

The words "free as a wind-swell, joyful and loving in letting it be", is well suited to the acrobatic dolphin jumping and twisting in mid air at 2:03. Proof that wild animals also feel joy and elation. What a song! What a singer/songwriter! There will never be another John Denver.

Jacques Cousteau was the first to show us the undersea world. He invented the "aqua lung" and the equipment that could take us as individuals under the sea. (Previously, there were submersibles, but not personal breathing aparatus like what he invented). In the 60's he had documentary shows showing where he went and the world he explored. John Denver went on a cruise with him and this was his tribute to Jacques Cousteau and his ship, the Calypso. FOr those of us who grew up with his documentaries, we share this passion so incredibly expressed in this song.
I remember the year that Calypso was released John was on his annual tour. He came to the Scope in Norfolk, VA. He has a back screen projector showing this video as he sung for us. 11,000 people became completely silent and watched and listened. When it was over the place literally erupted into a standing ovation and lots of praises being sent to John and Jacque. Now almost 50 years later I sit and watch and listen and the same feelings came flooding back. RIP John and Jacque for your spirit and caring.
@@mikedangiolillo1123~I'm fascinated by your timeline, Mike. I don't know what you mean by the Calypso being released, and then 50 years going by. How old were you when all of this occurred? I'm 71, and remember when John Denver came onto the scene in the early 1970's. So many memories, and so many amazing and talented artists that we lost far too soon. Jim Croce, Harry Chapin, Janis Joplin, Jim Morrison, Leonard Skynard.... yes, I could go on and on, but I won't. Thank you for your time, anyway.
Aye aye....Calypso can cause a wee bit of emoting. HEALTHY emoting. Seeing John sing it live without symphony raise the hair on your neck and your eyes tear up
This world owes SO much to Jacques Cousteau. He and his crew were the last of the true explorers. We learned so much about the seas and oceans from him, without him we wouldn't know half of what we do now. I wish they had kept playing his specials on TV through the years so the new generations could have gotten to know him and seen what spectacular things he and his crew accomplished
John Denver was the epitome of writing and singing that actually had a warmth and meaning to them. Several years ago, my friends and I had the privilege to see him in concert in Seattle as well as Portland. His music was and still is special. While he is gone and we miss him, his music is lasting and will succeed in outlasting some of the so-called music that we listen to today. He brings many happy memories. Gone but NEVER forgotten
this another masterpiece from John, a lovely haunting melody and for me the pinnacle of excellence was reached with the glorious sight of a hump back whale broaching !! gone but never ever forgotten ! thank you John 😊
+Rachael Stanton I grew up listen to John. When everyone else was listening to hard rock, I was listening to John! Now when I hear his songs it takes me back in time. Time is so precious for each one of us.....every second is a gift............
this song is so special to me....I sat with my oldest brother, my hero for life , we always had a close bond with our love for music...as I sat one night in his many hospital stays he ask me to play this song over and over for him . I must have played it for at least a solid hour! he died a few months later how I miss him ....when I play songs like this , he is right beside me once more ...miss you Bo !!! till we see each other again the music will play on ...and on....and on...best brother a girl could have!!!
I watched Jacques Ives Cousteau & Calypso's expeditions & adventures without fail Mr Cousteau showed us so much. Thank You John Denver for this beautiful song for both👍🏽
I just listened to this thinking that everyone who knew I loved this song is gone now. And yes, I'm brushing back the tears. He took us on so many wonderful adventures, and taught me so many things that I still hold in my heart.
A good friend who has passed away a few years ago was a marine engineer and served aboard Calypso for a few cruises. The pics and stories he had made our group of friends fairly jealous. Sean - hope to meet you in Fiddler's Green!
One of the most fascinating evenings I've ever spent was listening to Michael Costeau talk about the future of our oceans. The song has the rhythm of the sea. I can feel a deck beneath my feet when I listen to it.
Before I discovered David Attenborough, I used to watch Jacques Cousteau's specials..... oh! how I loved them all... and this song by John Denver condensed all the emotions I used to feel when I watch those specials... beautiful song.
Beautiful, Breathtaking, yes you are so missed. I miss you. They don’t play your music on the radio but I don’t understand because your music is timeless.
Such an exquisitely beautiful song. And I love Jacques Cousteau. I remember him from long ago. What a great proponent of wildlife of the sea!! Truly a great man he is, to be sure.
Ive always tried to keep the Environment clean when im out in it...Johns love for life with the outdoors exemplifies his music. I had just finished up fishing on the day he died...My wife came up to me at home that day and gave me a hug and said "Im Sorry" From that point on I always took a day off from work and walked the streams where I live thinking of John..Life is truly precious so I learned after his death... RIP John Denver.
I know this wonderful and special people like the Cousteaus and beautiful singers like John Denver are in heaven feeling how much they are still loved ..thank You Jacques for opening our eyes to the beauty of our world’s oceans.. and John Denver thank You for Your songs and beautiful talents.
Jacques Cousteau - environmentalist, oceanographer, inventor of the aqua lung - was joyful in spirit, along with his crew, as the song lyrics say. They explored with awe and respect for all living beings. May Jacques Cousteau's legacy live forever and John Denver's lyrics too!
never had the chance to meet Jacque, but really enjoyed taking jean out on our dive clean up in maui .. he was a great inspiration . he follows in his fathers foot steps...... .
Jacques Cousteau and John Denver were a match made in heaven. John Denver a true environmentalist decided to make this song for one of the greatest discoverers and environmentalists Jacques Cousteau. The proceeds from this song went directly to help out to defray the expenses of the calypso and its crew which wasn't very expensive undertaking. Watching the Jacques Cousteau specials was a very big part of my and my family's life . We were taken on an adventure around the world discovering new places and I think that this show impacted the world. Let us remember that this planet we live on is only 25,000 miles in circumference . The Earth is like a grain of sand within the universe and so far it is the only life known in the universe. So we have to have respect for all of life on this very fragile planet. Rip Mr Jacques Cousteau and John Denver for bringing such a beautiful song to our attention and also showing us The infinite magic and beauty of our planet. Take good care of it for It is the only one we have.
quotes from Mr Cousteau: "Water and air, the 2 essential fluids on which all life depends, have become garbage cans" 'when one man... has the opportunity to lead such an extraordinary life, he has not right to keep it to himself" Thank Jaques, thank you for the calypso and your son who continues your work
these things are very true and i don't want to be that man I want to be in the truth of all things. For God is Love an understanding Keep me in the palm of your hand lord i pray for your help in this matter. In the name of Jesus i pray. A men
THANK YOU soooo much for producing this wonderful film. IT'S MARCH, 2020 - Coronavirus has most of us sheltering in place; this is a GREAT time to show children this uplifting video. HEALTH & JOY TO ALL!!
I just would like to say I met John Denver in Colorado when working at a ski resort and got to know him ,he was a very good friend because for his life , his music and his legacy as not just a musical singer but what he gave to so , so many and that was his time and friendship and his music says it all , may you rest in peace my friend and until we meet again for you are so ,so sadly missed........
John believed in natural beauty in everything and he sang from his heart! This is what made him so memorable and I am one that will remember him and all he did for this world. He gave so much and we will always remember him for his beautiful music and for the wonderful person he was and always will be. God be with you John and may you rest in peace.
Oh, the whale and the dolphins, the sheer joy they show, freedom of the ocean if there is an afterlife that is mine . Music beautiful.Calmed me down. Following a routine dental visit today, now need to be fast tracked as i may have signs of cancer in my upper jaw. Not very well explained to me by the dentist( in one sentence), presumably he must think that I do not need to worry about this, I have just gone into meltdown, will play this again and the world will slow down.
I have been 'Whale Watching' in Massachusetts twice and both times I was in tears as I watched the beautiful Whales and Dolphins having fun as they leapt in and out of the water. I am also in tears every time I watch the beautiful video and listen to John Denver sing Calypso. Along with many many other people, I miss Jacques😢and John 😥very much.
Darth, The Calypso was no ordinary research ship and Jacques Cousteau was no ordinary researcher. John and Jacques were fast friends. Jacque even had special goggles made for John Denver as his eyesight was so poor. Great friendship.
That TV series featuring Cousteau was fantastic. John was a mountain guy, comfortable at high altitude. Jacques was the seafarer, comfortable in the depths below sea level. Both showed great appreciation for our world. I sure miss these guys!
+Darth Belal The Calypso was wildly popular. Jaques Cousteau had his own TV program called "Undersea with Jaques Cousteau" He was the first person to make land dwellers aware of what went on in the ocean. So no, it was not really a far stretch back then, Now yes.
+Darth Belal I had a model of the Calypso that I built when I was 13 in 1975. Really impressive family he had, Mr. Cousteau did. His tragically died in the helicopter that is on the ship, I believe he went down in an ice field in the Arctic. Hy Ho Calypso! I drink a beer to Jacques cousteau.
So well done, a beautiful tribute to a wonderful human being who did so very much to shine a light our wonderful oceans and the gifts therein and, such a beautiful and compassionate song by John Denver - thank you.
The World of Jacques Cousteau, watched it to many times to count as a kid. I loved the show and John Denver goes and makes a hit song about his ship. When John died I lived near monterey bay at that time.
i miss Jaques and his family sooo much...I learned soo much as a teenager from him and his family...and now nothing ..we have dropped this research..and it is unacceptable...what happened...? America used to care...smh...😢😢😢
I used to hear this song so often on my way to class in my first year of medical school at the University of Cincinnati in 1975. Reminds of that year quite a bit.
ShadowsGathered That makes us about the same age. I bought the album and sang along in my living room. Man, I used to really let it rip. I loved singing with John. Farewell, Andromeda.
This was one of mom's favorite songs by John Denver. I had the opportunity of a lifetime, by getting to see him live in concert . When she passed away in 2003, we played John's music in the background. I also had a chance to sing "Perhaps Love," her other favorite song. I miss her very much.
There are men like them but our government keeps them quiet and doesn't make it known or televised daily crap you'll get his from.cnn when they're traipsing around the desert chasing soldiers and ask them why they served and why they're dying you know stupid questions because everyone likes to go to a lot of race to see accidents
RIP Jacques Cousteau and John Denver. I have long loved this song and the epic voyages of the "Calypso" and the folks who manned this once in a lifetime vessel.

Thank you for sharing your beautiful memories with us. How fortunate you were to see such an awesome inspiring concert and video.
so touching.....
Seeing John sing it live without symphony raise the hair on your neck and your eyes tear up
We must never allow growing knowledge and understanding to rob us of the joy, awe, fear, appreciation and wonder of raw, unbridled nature.
Cousteu was the greatest Enviromentalist that ever lived and there will never be anyone as great as he was.
I second that one! =)
Rachael, you are so Right
I had the pleasure of introducing John Deven to my niece who loves I told about his songs helped to save the oceans❤😊
this song is so special to me....I sat with my oldest brother, my hero for life , we always had a close bond with our love for music...as I sat one night in his many hospital stays he ask me to play this song over and over for him . I must have played it for at least a solid hour! he died a few months later how I miss him ....when I play songs like this , he is right beside me once more ...miss you Bo !!! till we see each other again the music will play on ...and on....and on...best brother a girl could have!!!
One man's song , a gift to we lover's of Life and , our blessed Earth, thank you so much John.
I miss you so much Uncle Bob! You treated me like a son that I never experienced! Man, I miss you!
2 men who made this world a better place...Jacques and John......RIP...
I watched Jacques Ives Cousteau & Calypso's expeditions & adventures without fail
Mr Cousteau showed us so much. Thank You John Denver for this beautiful song for both👍🏽
If this doesn’t bring tears to your eyes you must be made of stone.
Every time I listen to this beautiful moving song, it tears at my heart
I just listened to this thinking that everyone who knew I loved this song is gone now. And yes, I'm brushing back the tears. He took us on so many wonderful adventures, and taught me so many things that I still hold in my heart.
Y
Tears to my red eyes, yes, bit Hope to my heart 💓💓💓
They will never die as long as we keep their memories alive
🥺 🙂happy sad when I hear this 😢
I second that and agree with you 100%!
I wish someone would write a nice song as a tribute to John for leaving us with years of great music and memories 😊
May we never forget Jacques Cousteau and all his men, and family for what they taught us and showed us!!!
What talent,,John Denver deserved a lot more than they gave him,,,He was amazing,,,,I love his voice an songs,,,
ya
That is so true
Huh? Who is _"they"_ and what were _"they"_ supposed to *give him?*
Edit: But oh yes, he truly was an amazing performer.
A good friend who has passed away a few years ago was a marine engineer and served aboard Calypso for a few cruises. The pics and stories he had made our group of friends fairly jealous. Sean - hope to meet you in Fiddler's Green!
One of the best Entertainers we ever had/R.I.P. John.
One of the most fascinating evenings I've ever spent was listening to Michael Costeau talk about the future of our oceans. The song has the rhythm of the sea. I can feel a deck beneath my feet when I listen to it.
Beautiful song and Beautiful video. Thanks for putting them both together! Chills🐋🦦🌊😎
such a artist:)what a voice and personslity.great.one of most talented artist.the music will live forever.
Before I discovered David Attenborough, I used to watch Jacques Cousteau's specials..... oh! how I loved them all... and this song by John Denver condensed all the emotions I used to feel when I watch those specials... beautiful song.
Vanlalhlua Chhakchhuak I feel exactly as you do...John put so much passion and emotion into that incredible voice...
Beautiful, Breathtaking, yes you are so missed. I miss you. They don’t play your music on the radio but I don’t understand because your music is timeless.
I miss John Denver too
Such an exquisitely beautiful song. And I love Jacques Cousteau. I remember him from long ago. What a great proponent of wildlife of the sea!! Truly a great man he is, to be sure.
Ive always tried to keep the Environment clean when im out in it...Johns love for life with the outdoors exemplifies his music.
I had just finished up fishing on the day he died...My wife came up to me at home that day and gave me a hug and said "Im Sorry"
From that point on I always took a day off from work and walked the streams where I live thinking of John..Life is truly precious so I learned after his death...
RIP
John Denver.
I am female and was raised with the “gender roles” of the 1970’s.
But i *very badly* wanted to BE Jacques Cousteau!
never had the chance to meet Jacque, but really enjoyed taking jean out on our dive clean up in maui .. he was a great inspiration . he follows in his fathers foot steps......
Rip Mr Jacques Cousteau and John Denver for bringing such a beautiful song to our attention and also showing us
The infinite magic and beauty of our planet. Take good care of it for
It is the only one we have.
quotes from Mr Cousteau: "Water and air, the 2 essential fluids on which all life depends, have become garbage cans" 'when one man... has the opportunity to lead such an extraordinary life, he has not right to keep it to himself" Thank Jaques, thank you for the calypso and your son who continues your work
Don't forget bullshit.
these things are very true and i don't want to be that man I want to be in the truth of all things. For God is Love an understanding Keep me in the palm of your hand lord i pray for your help in this matter. In the name of Jesus i pray. A men
Dear God, now that John is there with you, please let him know that we here on earth still miss him and his music dearly!!!
One of my favorite shows, songs and singers from my childhood. They world has changed so much ❤
THANK YOU soooo much for producing this wonderful film. I"m a STEM Teacher and, while I'm not allowed to have "screen time" films in class, I have communicated a recommendation to the parents that they locate this on their own computers.
Such an uplifting song.... Feeling down and this just makes all your troubles float away 😊
+Katie Stevens The Calyso and jaques were among the most famous duo on the planet. They even had their own TV show.
That TV series featuring Cousteau was fantastic. John was a mountain guy, comfortable at high altitude. Jacques was the seafarer, comfortable in the depths below sea level. Both showed great appreciation for our world. I sure miss these guys!
We should remember this song for John Denver!
It takes some serious talent to sing about a research ship and make people like it.......
I agree...
+Darth Belal The Calypso was wildly popular. Jaques Cousteau had his own TV program called "Undersea with Jaques Cousteau" He was the first person to make land dwellers aware of what went on in the ocean. So no, it was not really a far stretch back then, Now yes.
+Darth Belal lol
+Darth Belal John was on a roll.
Absolutely loved watching the Jacques Cousteau tv program back in the 70's in New Zealand.
I've always loved this song. I remember watching all those Jacques Cousteau specials on TV when I was in HS.
One of the most beautiful voices ever
So well done, a beautiful tribute to a wonderful human being who did so very much to shine a light our wonderful oceans and the gifts therein and, such a beautiful and compassionate song by John Denver - thank you.
0:20 John, your gone now, your missed, you have really out done yourself. “Beautiful “❤
Memories voice off an angel. Left this world to soon
So einzigartig.....ruhet in Frieden. Solche Menschen wie euch wird es niemals mehr geben.....
Excellent, SUPERIOR video.
Thank you Jacques, and thank you John.
God Bless them and may they both R.I.P. Both of them were such awesome men.
How touching. And how the crew of Calypso touched society at large. I can't stop crying.
loved the jacques cousteau programmes on tv, and this song also.!
The World of Jacques Cousteau, watched it to many times to count as a kid. I loved the show and John Denver goes and makes a hit song about his ship. When John died I lived near monterey bay at that time.
God gave us the world John gave music a life
i miss Jaques and his family sooo much...I learned soo much as a teenager from him and his family...and now nothing ..we have dropped this research..and it is unacceptable...what happened...? America used to care...smh...😢😢😢
God's creation is absolutely amazing, praise Him for His immense glory and beauty in Jesus' name...!!!
Memory off watching this wonderful explorer on TV with mother father
Jacques ,was the Man I loved his programme's as a child , happy happy days , even today I call the woollen cap he wore ,a Jacques's hat , great song
I also remember him as a child. And yes, those were such happy days. I hate what this world has turned into. I love the memories.
I used to hear this song so often on my way to class in my first year of medical school at the University of Cincinnati in 1975. Reminds of that year quite a bit.
Oh, how I loved John Denver... I was 19 when this song was released.
ShadowsGathered That makes us about the same age. I bought the album and sang along in my living room. Man, I used to really let it rip. I loved singing with John. Farewell, Andromeda.
young lady, i love in order dogs, whales, all animals, folks who care and whoops my sons who r nice and you
+Katherine Booth wish my photo showed up, im pretty.
+Katherine Booth Hi Katherine. I also love "in the same order". John Denver was such an awesome person who died too young.
+Annabell Brown HUH? Calling herself pretty is NOT porn. Not even close. Geez!
This was one of mom's favorite songs by John Denver. I had the opportunity of a lifetime, by getting to see him live in concert . When she passed away in 2003, we played John's music in the background. I also had a chance to sing "Perhaps Love," her other favorite song. I miss her very much.
Both men are sorely needed in these troubled times. Thank you Jacques and John.
There are men like them but our government keeps them quiet and doesn't make it known or televised daily crap you'll get his from.cnn when they're traipsing around the desert chasing soldiers and ask them why they served and why they're dying you know stupid questions because everyone likes to go to a lot of race to see accidents
I can count on one hand the songs that make my eyes water. This is one of them
Beautiful. Just Beautiful! I still cry over John Denver.
DAS..war noch MEINE Welt,meine Gesellschaft,meine Musik,meine Weltanschauung…und dafür bin ich dankbar!
Loved this song then and now in 2023!
RIP Jacques Cousteau and John Denver. I have long loved this song and the epic voyages of the "Calypso" and the folks who manned this once in a lifetime vessel.
When I was a little boy I was watching the documentries of Cousteau Always. I wanted to join them to see how beautifullm our planet is.
