Lyrics:
But the Colorado Rocky Mountain high
I’ve seen it rainin’ fire in the sky
The shadow from the starlight is softer than a lullabye
Rocky Mountain high (in Colorado)
Rocky Mountain high (in Colorado)

I knew John back in the Seventies as I was a consultant brought in to help with a project he was doing. One night a small group of us sat around a campfire in the Rockies as he sang this song. Beyond magical! I will never forget that evening or John. He was a national treasure.
That would be the greatest thing to see right in front of you. Your lucky! He was one of a kind very talented person. R.I.P.
Wow! Just imagining sitting around the campfire listening to this song gives me goosebumps. Can't even imagine with John live - magical indeed. John is national treasure and so missed. My first crush :-)
That is SO Fuxking Awesome, pyou are Blessed😉
What a story lucky you to for sharing
Here in Colorado, John Denver will always represent this rugged, wild state. ❤️
No smoke, no mirrors, no laser lights, just John, singing his heart out. Magic.
And no dancers😁👍
When you have that much talent, nothing else needed.
First time I saw him live was 1984, not long after his divorce. That tour he was sort of going back to his roots. Just him, completely alone. Him, 3 guitars and a piano, and absolutely nothing else.
10,000 people sat mesmerized for 2-1/2 hours! He had an incredible gift of being able to connect, not just with the audience, but with every individual member of the audience. Every person there felt like the whole thing was for them.
Very few entertainers have that gift.
@@scrappydude1 True, it was a gift. Saw him live twice; first time in Nashville, and then in Salt Lake City. Both times he was so down to earth and completely at home performing his music as if we were at his place. Think most of audience felt that way because no one wanted the show to end.
amen, my brother
Are you kidding me? That was the PERFECT live performance. True lightning in a bottle stuff. I hope John knows how much he's missed, even in September 2023. Oh and big shout out to the conga / bongo percussionist.... he was killing it.
I said the word “perfection” out loud while watching this!!
Then read your comment.
Thought the bongos were a nice added touch too!
They don’t make em like this anymore. 😢❤
My mom got me into John. I lost her her 3 years ago and cry every time i listen to him

Totally agree.
Dec 2023 missing him
Anyone in 2024? I miss John
YES I do. I had the honor of being his massage therapist for a week. I was 6 months pregnant at time. I used Calypso and Fly like an Eagle for the first underwater home birth in our town of South Lake Tahoe. John invited me to the his show, got me a chair and and asked me when it was over how I like the show. A memory I will never forget. Earth Day is tomorrow, and he sang for Mother Earth. God bless you John, may your music and love shine down on us all.
Yep. For all his songs but especially this one. I’m always wandering around the mountains in Colorado and usually can’t help but belt out a few verses of Rocky Mountain High when I get to a summit. I’m off key but luckily it’s only mountain goats, marmots, and ptarmigans that are listening, and they don’t seem to mind.
I miss John all the time but his music lives on.
Yep, us Canadian's
He will always be in my heart. He was more than a talented artist. He was a good man who tried to help. What more could you ask for? God rest his soul
Who's here in 2021 watching this amazing man sing from his heart and soul?

Elvis could sing, Springsteen could write, and then there was John-blessed with the talent to do both so well
Amen to that !
Springsteen could write, sing, dance, and play every instrument. John is amazing too.
John Denver was way better than Elvis and Springsteen combined.
Freddie Mercury has entered the chat.

You be a poorer man if you never seen an eagle fly. Man, that's poetry!
Thats true, I would never move to a big city.
I once saw a condor soaring overhead over Tafí del Valle, Tucumán, Argentina.
Thankful for life because of being able to saw two eagles fly last year in our school and months ago when we have trip to mountain with the starry night as well💚🌌
The world is LESS without John Denver in it.
I reckon there aren't many artists in this day and age that could stand in front of a crowd and sound that good.

His light aircraft was shot down by the CIA, as he was a comunis supporter, he had far too many flying experience to crash into the ocean. Why do you think his body was NEVER found, CIA made sure of that.
And now 2023
Was a ski bum out in Aspen, in 1975/76, working in Snowmass as a desk clerk. Our night auditor looked exactly like JD, and with my granny-glasses, cowboy hat and guitar, he was the spitting image. We'd set him up in the mid-courtyard area around one of the fire pits, and everyone would stop and ask for autographs. One afternoon, during one of our little stunts, the "real thing" showed-up, laughed at us, borrowed my guitar and gave a little impromptu concert for about 150 people, in near-freezing weather. Neat guy.
I was there the winter of 75 also working as a grill cook at High Alpine restaurant and Crossroads Drug in town. I met him on the slopes once
great story man
that sir, is a cool story. :)
Very cool!
Nice !
"He was born in the summer of his 27th year." Brilliant songwriter.
I can't imagine how you could think I would be sarcastic, and that's sad about his friend, but I'm fairly certain John is talking about himself being reborn when he moved to the mountains at age 27 ("coming home to a place he'd never been before"), based on interviews I've seen that he did and just the whole context of that song. As I said very clearly, brilliant songwriter.
Davis Denver Why would anyone make a song about someone who died saying they were “born?”
John was speaking of himself here ..he was in such awe when at the campout that night that he felt he had been reborn.
"Lost a friend but kept his memory" is referring to his friend's passing.
@@matthewlong3716 He was on lsd when he wrote the song, I think it was a spiritual rebirth type thing, just my take tho
My husband and I began our marriage in the Colorado mountains west of Boulder. Years later after we moved from the state, John Denver's music could always take us back to those early happy years. Next week I have planned a very special Celebration of Life for my husband of 60 years who just passed. Rocky Mountain High will be sung at his Celebration. Has there ever been a more beautiful love song than Annie's Song?
We need him so much today.
This was not just a "concert", this was an epic milestone and watershed event in art, music and magic. John Denver was an incredibly rare gift to Humankind.
Well said.
Couldn't have said it better.
Perfectly said! Amen
And did you notice the other well known musicians in the audience? I thought I saw David Crosby and James Taylor in there enjoying the performance
When you actually see those mountains up close, you understand the love John had for Colorado ! Absolutely breathatking.
Hello cindy, how're you doing today!!!
We have made the trip from Ohio 6 times in 5 years. Going back sept 2024 to see the mountains and hear the elk bugle. It truly is an amazing place!
It was 1979, I went to live with my aunt and uncle in Cedaredge Colorado. I was from a broken home and drugged fuel life in San Bernardino Ca. I was 16 and found home in a place I had never been before. Finished my last 2 years of high school there. Went into the Navy in 1984 and never made it back to the place I always referred as the only home I ever knew.
What day is this, the 29th of July? 2024, I look around and all I can think is, how can I ever leave this exquisitely beautiful state? This song hits so hard today! All I want to do is go stand outside, and ofcourse, it's a day full of indoor tasks. JUST outside the door of every Coloradoan today is exactly what he's talking about here. Love you too John Denver!
Rest in Peace John Denver (1943-1997)
If I hadn’t heard this song before, I’d almost mistake this for the studio recording. One of the few times I’ve ever said that. He deserves true legend status.
Eagles are another one
This means he played this from not only his heart but also his soul. My parents (85 year old dad and my 82 year old mom is gone) but they loved JD and I have enjoyed an appreciation as a 50 year old as a result. His music was fantastic and we lost a legend too young.
Who's here in 2023? Love this man and his music. I appreciate him now more than ever. His music is a peaceful solace in our darkening world. Thanks God for John Denver. 💕🙏

I grew up with John Denver and never appreciated his music, he is one of the best artists of the 70's.

Tim here. This is a beautiful song, musically and lyrically. When the question "what's your favorite song lyric 1 of 2 from this song is always it. "Talk to God and listen to his casual reply" or "Know he'd be a poorer man if he never saw an eagle fly". He really painted a picture for me. Miss you John.
John Denver is a lost American treasure.
Of course I grew up with John Denver, listening to his music as a teenager and still today at the age of 63. When my girls were young and we moved to my present home today, I was up on a ladder stenciling my living room walls. Quite industrious I was at the age of 40, straddling the very top of the ladder, walking the stencil across the top of the wall with John Denver blasting from my "boom box." A complaining daughter commented that I should listen to her music; she was tired of hearing John Denver. Momentarily, I stopped the music and explained to her that some day when she hears John Denver music she will think of me and all the important memories of her life growing up. She was 13 years old then. Soon when she'd turned 15, she reminded me of this comment; she'd listened and discovered how motivating and uplifting and paralyzingly captivating his message and music are. His connection with the goodness of life was and still is instantaneous.
i wish the kids today could know the magic we experienced back in those days, it was amazing. thank you John Denver, we miss you so much
Hey Natalie... I'm 62 born in 1958. I enjoyed your story. In my teen years growing up in the 70s, music was the best. John Fogarty with CCR, Dire Straights, Bee Gees, Bob Seger with The Silver Bullet Band, are just a few of my favorites. John Denver though...WOW... nobody pulled at my heartstrings or gave me "feel-good" uplifting moments like he did. To this day I still go to him when I want music 🎶 corresponding to my mood. I don't think anyone could put music together better than John to fit a person's mood. Definitely a kindred spirit. I hope life is treating you good. Live long and prosper! (Spock) 🎶✌️

If you ever want to entertain yourself, watch the hearings about putting parental advisory labels on records in the senate. Al Gore is probably pretty embarrassed about all that now. Frank Zappa testified-and he actually se med nervous! He was great, though. Dee Schneider also testified. And then last, John Denver. You could tell, they thought he as gong to be their ace witness to label records, censor them. After letting the snare know his time as limited because he had a meeting with NASA (seriously-he wanted to travel in space), John Denver set them all straight on this censorship. He was not going to be their tool, and he sure as hell let them know.
The hearings are in RUclips. Frank Zappa and John Denver, fighting the good fight together. It’s priceless.

John Denver: One of those people who probably didn't have a single fault to his personality. Earth would be blessed to have more people like him.
John was a raging alcoholic with multiple DUIs and was even banned from flying because he flew his plane drunk. I love john but nobody has a faultless personality,
@@peanutbuttereggdirt1 I think he was not allowed to fly at the time of his death because he failed to stay sober after his second DUI, not because he had been caught flying a plane under the influence. However, I'm afraid he drove drunk more often than those two times -- DUI offenders are repeaters, and you don't get caught each and every time. And it's definitely not okay, and nor is throttling your wife and destroying her furniture with a chainsaw. But it is perfectly okay to enjoy this music.
I've been a fan of John Denver since 20 years ago and still love his voice.

I remember working for Sheryl Crow in around 94 and we were trying to work out this song for a show that night. John walked in and showed us it, smiled and apologized for inviting himself back stage. No one in Denver argued with him. I learned a lot about the simplicity of a guitar and vocals that day and he learned about the love this then 23 year old session guitarist had. One of the greatest singer song writers of all time . man this song takes me back to a better time.
When he left us....what a terrible loss. It seemed that he gained respect from all in his latter years and his music will transcend into the many years ahead.
People say that our music today is way better than that of the past. That is a complete lie. I'm a teenager today and nothing can top the beautiful simplicity of this man's music and that of the artists of the past. So simple, yet so talented, so effortless and ten times better than the synthesized junk I hear today on the radio.
