This song was a tribute to Jaques Cousteau and his ocean research vessel called Calypso. Grew up watching the show and changed my life regarding respect for the ocean and nature.. i believe that would be the reason for particularly this song in a school. Please, please, please check out the finale of this concert, song called Amazon. It's amazing!
"Calypso" and "Annie's Song" are my two favorites by John Denver. He was a big environmentalist and in "Calypso," he is paying homage to the great French oceanographer Jacques Cousteau and his crew aboard the research ship "Calypso." A beautiful song and message!
What a beautiful song, but I didn't expect the yodeling🤩. I didn't know this song, but I looked up his repertoire and found that I actually know more John Denver songs than I thought ☺️. Nice choice Jill, and thank you HAP for another great and insightful reaction 🥰🙋🏻♀️.
John Denver...such a great, great talent. He had the purest voice. I was fortunate enough to have seen him in concert and he was just fabulous. One the the best showmen and singer, gone from this world too soon.
John Denver is definitely a music legend. This song has such a relaxed and mellow vibe, yet still has its upbeat moments. He definitely had lots of talent and a huge following!!!
He's yodeling... I might have heard this as a baby in the background. Honestly, I don't know it. Pretty song . Thank you, Jill. Thanks, Hap, for your reaction ✌️ ☮️ 🥷
John was a hugh part of my teen Yeats and beyond. I loved his music and his sense of humor. His music will always be with me and I will mourn his passing forever.
There is an intro to that song, but it's cut out of the clip because in the video of the Wildlife Concert performance, it's voiced over by an interview segment.
The term you're looking for is "sea shanty" rather than "folk music". John did quite a bit of folk music, but this one has a unique (and intentional) nautical feel.
My favorite song of his. Such a gorgeous song and he had a voice that still gives me goosebumps. He was amazing. Be sure to watch some of his 70s performances when he was at his peak in popularity - he was so good.
I’ve always loved this song, but I haven’t heard it at all for over a decade, at least. So I was surprised into tears, listening, and watching John Denver once again. Pure nostalgia for him, for his early death, for his contribution to music and wildlife preservation. But also for Jacques Cousteau and his ship Calypso. I watched many of the TV specials they were on during the 60s and 70s. It’s too bad no one took his place when he retired/died. Glad you enjoyed it. John really never did put out a bad song.
John Denver, such a huge talent. So many great songs. From Country Roads, to Rocky Mountain HIgh, and The Eagle and the Hawk, by way of Granma's Feather Bed. I loved him so much, still do.
I'm a huge John Denver fan, and this is my favorite of his. He wrote hit after hit after hit. ASIDE: Please react to Home Free Man of Constant Sorrow. They are an all a cappella band (only voices), and you will get so many new subscribers if you react to them because "Home Fries" (Home Free Fans) always subscribe and put their money where their mouth is.
"The Wildlife Concert" is so important to me. I listened to it every day of high school! A few of my favorites from that concert is "Shanghai Breezes," "Two Different Directions," "Falling Out of Love," and my absolute favorite song is "Poems, Prayers, and Promises" if you want a song that will hit you in the feels!
You should watch the "official video" of this song. It really captures the total sound, sights of the Calypso ship, Jacques Cousteau and his crew and the majestic dolphins of the ocean. It's magical and John Denver does the ocean experience proud.
One of my favorite songs of John Denver's repetoire. I was able to see him in concert in 1972, just after Country Roads hit the airwaves. Just an interesting point, i prefer, Annie's Other Song better than Annie"s Song.... give it a listen.
John Denver left too soon. Have you heard his song with Placido Domingo? Perhaps Love. It's such a wonderful song. And Calypso may be short but it's a great tribute to Jacques Cousteau and his ship. Thank you. I always get emotional when I listen to John Denver's songs.
He was a champion of nature and what men was doing to destroy it. He spoke to Congress. He spoke to foreign governments about what we were doing to our planet. He used his music to open peoples hearts and minds.

You have to do Rocky Mountain High
❤❤ Please would you react to 'Words' by the Bee Gees ❤❤ love John Denver ❤️❤️
Music in the last 50 years has completely gone to hell such filthy lyrics. Music used to be so nice and decent and clean now it's filth
