- An armoured knight on a lumbering steed; toiling serfs, tied to the lands of their lord, cloistered monks and nuns, lost in prayer. And don’t forget the scenery: high-walled castles, great gothic churches, and farms, farms, and more farms. We all know the kind of things we’d find during the Medieval Age. But what actually WAS the Medieval Age?
The answer to this has as much to do with early Renaissance woke culture as it does historic periodisation. So, today on Medieval Madness, the definitive channel for all things worrying, weird and wonderful about the Medieval Age, let's get down and dirty with some definitions and find out what the Medieval Age really was.

A time-travelling German shepherd sounds like it should be a character in a children’s book
Miverik is my husband he is very short like a dwarf and has a very large head so big that he gets tired very easily and has to rest so to please him in his discomfort i dance for him naked and covered in honey and butter which he then licks off, he begs me to fart so i fart he tells me to wee i wee he demands that i eat a roasted hedgehog I eat a roasted hedgehog, anyways to the point my husband is dead my name is phillipa and I have chosen you to be my next husband!! would you like for me to dance for you?
Id love to see a video about medieval times period of different countries .
Medieval is a European period. Various parts of the world developed at different speeds. For example, the iron age began in Rome back when, but the Scandinavians and those on the British Isles were still in the bronze age at that particular time.
The fact that not only you but 36 people liked your comment thinking that the Medieval age would apply in different places scares me. It a European Age. Other areas had their own ages at this time. 🙄
@@wreckastow6575 That's exactly what I replied.
I think she meant what were other countries doing during the Medieval (476a.d.-1492a.d.) Era. Which is a perfectly valid question.

I just came here looking for some Renassaince woke culture!
A note on the German Shepard. I recently worked with the production designer of gladiator Arthur Max he told me that they were meant to get wolves but they could only get German Shepard’s for filming.
@The Snow Nigro apparently chilled wolves were hard to come by in Surrey at the time of filming. they tried to put makeup on the dogs.
This is a good overview. Two things I point out to people who think of the medieval age as a dark and ugly period of ignorance is as follows: the fact that their definition of medieval is wildly broad and uninformed, how can you judge a thousand years of history spanning such a large geographic area? It wasn't a static or dull blank spot in history by any stretch. Secondly those who claim it was a particularly brutal period of history are either lying or willfully ignoring the rest of human history. Look at the brutality of the Roman Empire, the inhumanity of Chinas many dynasties, the terrible wars fought in the "Age of Enlightenment", the entirety of the 20th century. Even our "modern peaceful age" is only so on the surface. Anyone keeping up with geopolitics could easily see how violent we still are as a species.
Amen to that!
There are a lot of misconceptions. Defining it is not too hard, I dare say. It was quite scientific and clean. Also, it was less brutal and the people had more rights than in the following ages.
“The more I get to know people, the more I love ❤️ my dog.” - Mark Twain
Look at American cities in 2024!
German Shepherds as a breed were created in the late 1800s. But this breed was created by formalizing an existing type of herding dog prevelent in Germany. The breeds founder just took his favorite examples of these dogs and bred them and created a breed standard. The landrace herding dogs this breed was created from would of looked similar to modern shepherds and existed for a long time before the breed was formalized.
Cap bruh
I wish I could remember who said it (and I am paraphrasing); “Every age is modern to those that live it”. How our ancestors see this era will, of course, be different to how we see ourselves that are living it. They will have the benefit of greater context to see what happened around us.
Interesting concepts. Thank you.
I think it was mr common sense
The English word "modern" is simply a synonym for "current" or "present". So yes; people at *any* time would view themselves as "modern" (in whatever language and the vagaries thereof they speak). A thousand years from now, historians might label this the "Google Age"... but that doesn't make one whit of difference to us here and now.
I mean….of course? Lmao not really a deep thought.
Oh, that would be me. Back in the summer of 76. I was on a bus headed for Bembridge from Ryde, on the upper deck, showing off to girls who had no interest in me, sadly. How did it get from there to you?
But that’s not what he said. He said that renaissance men thought humanity had regressed due to religion
What about Russel Crow’s time traveling wheat crop? Wheat that short was never to be found in that age. It was all 6-7ft. tall……lol

Farms, farms, and more farms- followed by the shot of the goat. Can we please applaud the narrator of this channel!!! Every upload is so good and the humor is soooo awesome!
I do object to the geometric farming idea, though, things were much more haphazard.
Agreed 👍 💯 … and on another topic, “Nightmare Tales” keeps me up at night, we are surrounded by so much inexplicable phenomena. Hope scientists will shed some light into these so I can go back to sleep lol.

Did they just not know about any civilizations before Greece in that age? I find it hard to believe that they thought Ancient Greece was the beginning of history lol

I would say the first key to turn for the “end of the dark ages” was the printing press being invented in 1436 by our boy Johannes

Although the Victorians also shaped our current view of the medieval period. Long long period that it is.

Two very important historical occurrences to bring about the renaissance were the Mongol invasion of the middle east and Europe in the 13th Century and the Bubonic Plague of the 14th Century. The social upheaval of these occurrences pushed people such as Petrarch to rediscover the classical world.
Very cool, just discovered this channel. An easy subscription!

Not too Complicacted, man: So many great "Raymonds" marked the Middle Ages--'I like the raimonds actually of the early 11th and 12th centuries, who were counts in the region of Toulouse... And there abouts, involved in the Albigensian Crusade (on the right side of that,i I might add). But then you go on to use 'XL'. Qs the title number Excel. Well this is funny man, what can I say? Made me laugh! Stereo. I just like the combination. .
@@dondevice3342 Thanks. English is not my first language so i didn't understand at first.
The XL is an abbreviation of the two letters of my ancestral name, Xol Liana.
Ray XL your explanation is so much cooler than I even thought right on thanks man!
So whenever we talk about the Medieval Age or Renaissance, it's Europe (or Western Europe), I always wondered what was going on in Africa, Asia, and the Americas back then. Did these culture's have their own Medieval age or Renaissance?
Well, perhaps the process of colonialism erased lots of information about that. Let's not forget that many cultures had oral narratives
The concept of "Dark Age" is pretty fascinating to me. Middle Ages tend to be considered one, but it couldn't be further from reality, imho. Actually, for a "dark age" to be considered that in the first place, there should be a lack of written records, hence the "dark". It is not about the nastiness of the era, it's about the lack of knowledge thereof.
It's fascinating because the Antiquity (pure radiance, according to Petrarch et al.) has several instances of actual dark ages when all records went silent or disappeared altogether. Ancient Greece had one before their Classical times. The invasion of the Sea People is also another instance.
However, during the so-called "Dark Ages" with capital letters, there are few instances of this happening. Even in an era of lesser "splendour", Europeans were reading and writing and progressing. The Middle Ages were brewing new civilizations. It wasn't neither dark or decadent: it was a ladder to future greatness.
Its simply calked dark because it was a recession, the in between times of the fall of Rome and the German barbarians. It was violent and poverty, and dark and sad. So wexwill use Med-eival ages just For YOU!!!😅😮
@@secretamericayoutubechanne2961 Recession is an economic term. You mean regression, and the Middle Ages were clearly not regressive. Rome in its latter years had already experienced some regression in the arts, sciences and philosophy, and those were their own. The Middle Ages took a ruined civilization and preserved some of its foundational texts for posterity while building new cultures of their own from the ground-up. Of course there were times of famine and poverty. Rome also had them, and we still have them from time to time. The Middle Ages are fifteen centuries of History; calling them the Dark Ages while completely ignoring the splendour that Al-Andalus, the Eastern Roman Empire or every European Kingdom reached at different points in between those centuries is the most simplistic take anyone can have.
This is pretty fricken smart. I enjoyed. Please, keep going.
Very nice work. Thank you.
Just friendly fyi: that's not a german sheperd. Copy pasted this from imdb: "Maximus' pet wolf is played by Kyte, a female Tervuren Belgian Shepherd. The production couldn't use real wolves because England's strict anti-rabies laws prevented them from importing wolves."
When I was at school I thought the dark ages were lost to history I was excited as I grew to find that was not the case

I read Anya Seton's novel Katherine as a child in Los Angeles. It's a romanticization of the 14thCentury liason between John of Gaunt and his mistress, later his Duchess, Katherine Swynford, from whom many European monarchs are descended. For years I dated time as Before and After Katherine, the 1300s being unimaginably old. Then I moved to Istanbul. One obelisk in what's left of our Hippodrome casually states on its bronze plaque: Erected by Theodosius I in 390. I would look out from my apartment across the ruins of the 9thCentury Boukoleon Palace to the Marmara Sea, and marvel at how sophisticated the Byzantines were in the 5thCentury, a time when English history was shrouded for me in misty Arthurian legends. I love your channel, shedding light and humor on the Dark Ages. One thing about the English, they preserve their antiquities and respect the ones from elsewhere in their custody. There's very little left of the Byzantines here, but it is evocative of a time of splendor, learning, beauty.
The First Medieval video I've seen that points at Petrarch! Finally, well researched stuff.

To me a Dark Age occurs in an area when the dominant power, church, dictator, president, discourages learning among the majority of the population. Therefore, different cultures have had their Dark Ages at different times. Some relatively recently.
The dog in the movie is a Tervuren Belgian Shepherd btw. But I believe they also were not around until the 1800s 😂
This channel quality is too much for only 70k. If continue like this you are going to blow up, keep it up. In these dark times we need more knowledge and less shit like tik tok.
Man you are a DIRECTOR OF CINEMA!!
Considering Hollywood's primary goal is to entertain at the cost of historical accuracy I suppose we're lucky that Russell Crowe didn't whip out an iPhone
Yo dude, this is a good video. Dang.
The breed the Romans would've used is extinct if I remember correctly. Not to mention the training needed for those scenes, very few breeds outside of Belgian Malinois's, German Shepherd Dogs, and Belgian Sheepdogs. Not common enough for the director to bother for (using a Cane Corso as a replacement. Neapolitans would be preferred but I don't see them doing bitework).
Do you have any podcast for your shows? And if so, what's the name? Love your channel!
You have yourself a subscriber sir!
Just found this channel and am glad I did! Thank you for clarification of several points I had wondered about. I look forward to viewing the rest of the videos!
I'm looking forward to more from this channel. This was a very good first entry to explain the blanket term 'medieval age', it's surprising how many people think that it only includes knights and castles. I'm especially interested in the Viking and Norman ages.
I’m so excited about this new channel, an exciting way to learn about the Medieval time’s….
I love anything ‘dark’ or Middle Ages… Angles and Saxons settling in England, the Franks taking over leading to Charlemagne tying things up, the Visigoths in Spain conquered by the Muslims, the birth of the Rus in Kiev, Viking raids, and of course the beauty of Byzantium
the birth of the Rus in Ladoga then expanding to Kiev and flourishing there
It's interesting how the further back we go the broader the brush we paint history with. As we get closer to the modern age, and more records are available, the finer the brush tip. It's human nature to see everything as now (the present) & then (the past). I'm sure there are many who would say that there has been great change in the past 40 years but nothing much changed in the 60 years before that and even less change in the 250 years before that... ad infinitum...
Petrarch would be disappointed.
Well done. Thx.
Very interesting. Thanks
Our era would be known in the next 1000 years as the stupidity age.
The true misunderstanding of the middle ages or "dark ages" is not what is represented here, but rather the fact that history shifts it's focus from the developed Mediterranean to the northern areas which were arising out of tribal cultures. No one even bothers to make note of this shift of focus, which is at the crux of it all. Basically, yes there was a splitting up of the Roman Empire at it's core in the area we now refer to as Italy. However, the city states that evolved in this area upon the breaking up of the empire did not dissolve into ignorance as people seem to think. They in fact continued to evolve as separate city state institutions that pushed forward civilization. However, few people bother to look at those city states in much detail when talking about the middle ages re: falling into some "dark age." They instead look at the regressed state in the extended area of the empire which were never as evolved except for outposts. These areas were for the most part still rooted to a large part in the tribal culture they originated from, just moving into early kingdoms. They were always behind culturally and that is the context upon which people are comparing to ancient Rome. There is no comparison and to do so is ignorant or stupid. The whole concept of "dark ages" is rooted in this very ignorance and/or stupidity.
There is an added area of misunderstanding here. In a sense, while the eastern Roman Empire did fall, it is the west that truly succeed in a way as it's lineage still exists to this day. Where the eastern Roman Empire was taken over and displaced, in the west it was fractured but the city states were a direct link to the original empire, the people and culture were the same, just fractured. So, in essence, the "empire" in the west was no longer an empire, but the people and culture continued. Yes, the culture did change due to this fracturing, including the rise of the church as the dominant unifying force in the area, but the people themselves were a continuation of those who lived there. Not only that, but this continued as the area reconnected into the state of Italy from the city states that remained, so this thread was never truly broken. In this way, the people of Italy truly are the descendants of the Roman Empire and in that way, it never really disappeared so much as lost it's empire status and changed over time.
Another misunderstanding this presentation mentions is that the western empire collapsed "never to get back up." What in fact happened is that many of the scholars concentrated in the eastern Roman Empire after the west fractured, but when the crusades finally displaced them from the Eastern Roman Empire, where did they go? To the west of course, especially Florence. It was this flood of scholars from the collapse of the Eastern Roman Empire to the west and to Florence which was the imputes for the Renaissance, so one could hardly say "never to get back up" when in fact not only did it get back up but was the spark of innovation for the western world. in fact, it took another 100 years for the Renaissance to take hold in the north, an extreme amount of time really, which shows how fertile the remnants of the Roman Empire really still were in the area that was the heart of the empire. Besides the arts, so many other foundations of modern civilization came from the area at this time, like all of modern banking and finance, re: the Medici family, much of the basis of modern political thought, re: Machiavelli, most of the advanced philosophical thought was from ecclesiastical sources, re: people we now refer to as saints in the Catholic Church who were for the most part from this area, etc, etc...
In essence, while the north was evolving from early kingdoms into feudal states and eventually the monarchies and empires they became, the remnants of the Roman Empire in the area south of the Dolomites, or Alps... they continued to evolve intellectually and socially while maintaining their size for the most part, not growing like the north and thus falling under the radar of many historians.
I thought only cats could time travel! Thanks for straightening me out.
