  • We were quoted over $27,000 for a custom installed louvered pergola. We decided instead to buy a DIY Louvered Pergola Kit that we found online that was a fraction of the cost. Was it worth it? Was it easy to install? Does it leak?

    How is the louvered cover for water proofing? We are thinking to get one for our deck which is very similar to yours in that it's long and faces the sun all day. But here in Vancouver we also need it for protection against the rain because I'm thinking to put a simple outdoor kitchen under it - mini fridge / grill/ etc. I am researching that this thing has a built in gutter system but not sure how well it works due to the gaps on the leaves of the cover. Thank you!

      Great question! I should post a follow up question addressing water specifically. I'll tell you this: the actual pergola does NOT leak from the top. We've had heavy rains and the hurricane Ian sprinkle through, but no water comes from the actual top of the pergola.
      That being said, things do get wet under the pergola when rain comes in from the side. So if it's heavy rain or windy, your stuff will get wet. But that's like that for any covered area.
      Thanks for commenting! I'll try to post a video soon to show you actual rainy situations. Subscribe if you get a chance :)

      We are just considering this product. They make a 6' wide leaves or 8' wide (more expensive). I just saw one demo'd. Really made for useable space outdoors, you can feather in as much sun blockage as you want and then for rain -- it's long rails of aluminum. It's not going to leak from there. Note, even from their demo. It does collect dirt over time and so you'll have to spray it out from time to time.

    I’m in the UK and came across this as I’m looking for efficient ways to clean it. I have a 6m version in white and it gets very green with algae in the damp winter we’ve just had. I find jet washing too messy so had a go today with an extendable caravan brush. Took a good few hours given the number of louvres.
    When I bought mine and built it I had to dash out and buy three decorative paving slabs to put under the legs nearest the lawn as I have a patio that has a 2 inch fall from the back to the front. You must make sure it’s on level ground. Mine is bolted into concrete.
    We’ve had very strong winds this winter and I’ve been impressed with how sturdy the whole structure is although it’s a bit nerve racking when you see it flex a bit. Apart from the pain of cleaning it it’s been a good investment and I agree so much cheaper than other quotes we had. Great fun with non diy family members helping me to build it.

      Greetings Chris!!! Thank you for sharing your experience. We've been to the UK several times and have loved it.
      We haven't had to wash ours due to the algae, but I can see by the deck boards do get algae where the water runs out. Since it's on the ground, we can easily pressure wash it. I wonder if you're getting algae more due to the climate...
      Well done on the paving slabs! Send us some pics of your design!
      Thanks for watching and hopefully subscribing!

    Cool pergola! Does it matter what direction the louvers are with regards to the sun? Do you recommend having a certain end of the pergola towards the east during sun rising, or west during sun setting? Not sure if the tilting works better for a certain orientation. Look forward to your reply. Thanks!

    • @HouseofHuie
      @HouseofHuie  Год назад +1

      Hi Paul! We don't notice a difference. The pergola louvers open a full 90 degrees so if they're fully open, it doesn't make a difference. We did choose the position so that the arm to Control the louvers was closest to our house... so that was our main factor for how to position it.

    you answered my question about the rain. I'm looking to replace my traditional overhand patio roof with something like this and was wondering about rain protection. I'd butt it up against my house a bit more to avoid the gap. Question: what size did you install? It looks like multiple kits put together, but I guess the extra poles are to support the extra long length.
    EDIT: nevermind, I see the sizing options in the description. Thank you!

    • @HouseofHuie
      @HouseofHuie  2 месяца назад

      Thanks for writing! We love hearing from you. It's a 20 x 10 and as you saw in the product link, it's all one unit.
      For the rain, the closer you put to the house, the less rain will fall in between the gaps. Based on where you want the louver arm, you may not be able to butt it up flush with your house. The louver arm juts a couple inches from the frame, so just be mindful. Of course if you have the louver arm placed opposite the side closest to the house, than you can butt the pergola flush against the house. Let me know if that makes sense!

My husband is hesitant to buy it because the area we would need to put it is directly next to our master bedroom, which is on the second floor. I was told that two brothers came in from Europe. One settled in the New York area. The other settled in the Arkansas region. Yet you never know we may be of Oriental descent. I know I have some Cherokee according to my mother one of my great great grandmothers.
      Yes, I design my own home it's right on the Appalachian Trail we're at 4000 feet and being built out of ICF the roof which right now we had a concrete pour scheduled for this week. It got postponed and hopefully not until spring because it got too cold not a large home just about 2000 ft.² total of three roof pitches, all 2 to 12 two lower roofs were supposed to be poured this week with a third one. The upper one poured in early spring they may all be poured then don't know.
      Are you still pleased with your shade structure looking at it though I don't know that it'll work for us. I need something that can stand closer to 140 mile an hour winds I had to design to that I think I would settle for something that could withstand closer to 100. We clocked 60 mile an hour on our wind gage so far. If you haven't picked up all this is voice dictation I have a severe case of dyslexia, and I use voice dictation to write everything so please forgive any big issues

      Hi Bill! That is a great question and one of the reasons we chose this pergola. Per the specs (check out the Amazon link to be sure), the inside height is 7 foot 9 and 3/32 inches. Outside height is 8 foot 2... Some other pergolas were a little shorter. We wanted it to be as high as possible so it felt bigger.
      I think there are other pergolas that might be taller, but this worked for our budget.

    Hey guys, awesome louvre! I've got a quick question please - how did you guys secure the louvre to the deck? I'd assume not all of the mounts would be over a joist, correct?

    • @HouseofHuie
      @HouseofHuie  8 месяцев назад

      So we would recommend adding some blocking (i.e. 2x4) under the deck where you plan to mount. Ours came with concrete screws, but you'll need to get some nuts and bolts that work for deck application. The pergola legs have a cover that hide the bolts so you won't see them.

The differences are obvious! The weight discrepancy 300 lb vs 1800 lb. You may save Thousands of dollars, with this Costco/Wayfair kit. But the thickness in material with these cheaper kits are not built very durable. The snow load and wind load on these kits are minimal. They recommend removing the louvers at min wind speeds and just 10lbs per square foot of snow load. Other larger name brand pergolas are thicker and wider posts and the louvers are made of much thicker material to that you can actually walk on with load ratings of 242lbs per square meter. They are cheaper but if you get high winds and snow it’s best to spend the money on something more durable

    Hey! Great DIY! However for those that can afford it, let me explain why there is no reason to believe that $21,000 is too much for a pergola from a company like StruXure, and if you can afford it, there is no reason you shouldn’t have it.
    StruXure Pergolas are 100% American made from aircraft grade, 1/4” thick aluminum that is powder coated in a 5 step marine grade process made to withstand salt on ocean shores, and corrosion. They are built to automate the protection of your patio investments. With an integrated rain sensor the pergola closes on its own at the first drops of rain. The wind sensor opens the pergola automatically in wind speeds above 65mph to prevent uplift. Forgot to close it? No worries, StruXure’s pergolas are ready to integrate with your smart phone from across the world, or across the yard.
    Furthermore a StruXure pergola is engineered exactly to fit your need, meaning not only is is built to withstand hurricane force winds, heavy snow loads, and will be designed for you based on your counties seismic requirements, but it also is permitted. That means if something ever were to go wrong that caused damage to your house from your patio covering, it would be covered by your home owners insurance. You wont get that with a DIY job and I can tell you, putting this DIY model on your deck ABSOLUTELY needs to be permitted in their county.
    But hey, you don’t even have to count on you home owners insurance because if something went wrong on a StruXure that caused damages to your home, StruXure with their lifetime installation warranty would be responsible. That is because StruXure handles every last detail of this system, from design and concept, measuring, engineering, manufacturing and install, with our own W2’d America employed, insured master installers.
    This is a great DIY. However, the value that a luxury pergola brand like StruXure is incomparable. Not only do you add the same square footage this DIY model does, but that square footage is actually backed with an average 50-80% return on investment when you sell your house. I guarantee that this cheaper rolled aluminum DIY project will not be standing well in 15 years, while StruXures are built to last a lifetime.

      Hi Jim! Great question. We had about two snowstorms this year where we averaged about 5 to 8 inches each time. The pergola vendor recommends opening up the louvers before it snows so that the snow doesn't pile up on the pergola... we FORGOT to do that. The snow piled up on it so we couldn't open up the louvers. We had to wait until it mostly melted. That being said, the pergola is still working fine and completely operational! So I would always follow manufacturer recommendations to open up louvers before snow, but we didn't and it did fine.
