- Sallim-dong has earned a spot in my top ten favorite neighborhoods in Seoul. It's small but packed with steelworkers, Japanese colonial-era houses, great views, and Seoul's first commercial and apartment complex. The exact image of Korea's 70s has remained almost unchanged for 50 years. The people who work there are masters of their craft, and it’s difficult to find any craftsman that worked less than a decade on his craft. Unfortunately, I have heard that the entire neighborhood will disappear, and many neighborhoods like this are no longer there, so a visit while you still can is a must. I’m happy I did with urban explorer @whereisdan
산림동은 제가 서울에서 좋아하는 동네 탑 10안에 드는 동네에요. 작지만 빽빽히 차 있는 철 장인들과 일제 건물들, 멋진 뷰, 그리고 서울의 첫번째 주상복합 건물까지... 50년동안 한국의 70년대 이미지를 고스란히 간직하고 있는 장소입니다. 또 여기서 일하시는 분들은 그들의 기술을 통달한 장인들이십니다. 여기서 10년 이하로 일하신 분을 찾기 힘들 정도니까요. 안타깝게도 이 동네 전체가 사라진다고 하니, 그 전에 한번 방문해 보는 것도 좋을 것 같습니다! 이번에는 도시 탐험가 @whereisdan 과 함께했습니다!

서울 시민들이 무심하게 지나칠 수 있는 지역에 대한 색다른 시각과 통찰, 애정하는 마음 모두 멋지네요. 구독 눌렀습니다.
옛날에는 세운상가 옆 선반 골목에 설계 도면을 가져가면 탱크, 총, 잠수함을 만들어 나올 수 있다고 했죠. :) 멋진 장인들이십니다.
산림동이라는 동 자체를 못들어봤는데 역시 재개발 중이네요 과거, 현재, 미래가 동시에 보이는 동네라니ㄷㄷ

내가 볼땐 그냥 다 똑같아보이는데 이곳 저곳 다 다니시는거 보면 도시를 얼마나 색다르게 보고있는지 알거같다
근데 건물 다 밀고 빌딩만 올리는것보단 그 지역의 특색에 맞게 보존하거나 재개발 하는게 좋은데....
우리나라 건설사들은 그런거 몰라요.

My neighborhood is sadly being redeveloped. Making way for new apartments and commercial area. I love the old parts of Seoul, but I understand some areas need to be redeveloped. It's just sad to see people forced out.

The black building at 7:20 is a new 'apartment-style factory', backed by Seoul City as part of a redevelopment initiative. Initially, the plan was to just renovate that building and maintain the surrounding area to preserve the city's charm. But now, there's talk about designating the entire area for redevelopment. It's disappointing. Personally, I think preservation should be a priority. At 7:35, there's a historic building from the Japanese era. (This old building has been introduced several times on Korean online sites.) Despite its historical significance, some online comments describe it as an 'Dirty and in need of demolition'. It's essential to remember that during WWII and the Korean War, areas like this were deliberately spared from bombings. (During the Korean War, northern urban areas based on Euljiro roads, including Jongno, were excluded from bombing because they had many urban landscapes with high historical value.) However, recently they are trying to get rid of it completely and build a stupid glass building.
Most of the buildings to be preserved were palaces with hundreds of years of history. Is there any reason to preserve a building that is only a few decades old? Korea is a country that is 5,000 years old. Only a few decades are not even listed in history. Moreover, most Koreans would object to the assertion that Japanese-style buildings built during the Japanese colonial period in the early and mid-1900s have historical value.
Looking at the Seoul Metropolitan Government's policy, it seems that most factories, including building-type factories, will disappear in the old city center, and a tradition that emphasizes the more essential historicity of Seoul will be restored. Partly because Korea's industrial structure is changing, many factories have already moved to the outskirts of Seoul. Many things in Seoul that foreigners meet are considered temporary by Koreans. Preserving that temporary thing is like telling Korea not to engage in economic development.
It feels like some people have a fetish for the modern slum and an almost fanatical evil image for the new. People who live in more modern and new buildings also create their own human life stories. Currently, it is not the mysterious urban humanities that make Koreans different from Westerners. It lies in the depth of Korean thoughts and the dynamism in reality.
i dont know much about this topic but i wish they could redevelop it but still preserve the buildings and keep its charm...
As a Korean, I hope so. But there are so many people wishing to renovate such areas for economical profit. And to make such artisan spirit into the idetity of that area so that many people want this area to be preserved will take too much time. It would look beautiful to foreigners, but to many Koreans, it is just old-fashioned things that needs to be altered. It is hard to claim that we should preserve old areas among much more powerful Koreans who want to renovate here and earn much money.

서울은 대한민국의 과거와 현재, 미래가 공존하는 매력 있는 도시죠. 특히 광화문과 그 앞에 즐비한 빌딩들이 대표적이죠.
그 안에 '산림동'은 조선시대를 뜻하는 과거가 아닌 우리의 산업화의 과거를 간직한 곳 같군요.
