노인분들이 무료하시기도하고 챙겨주지못하는 독거노인분들도 계시다보니 탑골공원 근처에서 점심식사를 제공하고 대화도 하면서 장기도 두도록 모이는곳이 된거죠. 이전에 왕실 터 주변에 서민들이 모여살던 곳이니 자연스레 사람들이 모이는거죠. 따로 모시고싶어도 원치않는 노인분들도 계셔서 그냥 자유롭게 두는게 어르신들 맘에도 편할겁니다. 서울시에서 그들을 방치하는게 아니라 그 분들의 선택을 존중하고 있다고 생각해요. 그저 건강하게 사시다 편안히 눈 감으시길 바랄뿐.
피맛골은 조선시대에는 관리들의 말을 피해 다니던 길이었지만 10여년 전까지만 해도 서민들이 즐겨찾던 술집들이 많아 서민들의 시름을 풀어주고 입맛을 돋구워졌던 곳이었죠. 그런데 땅주인들의 개발욕심도 있었겠지만 무엇보다도 영세한 가게들이 대부분 모여있다보니 화재가 자주 발생해 서울 시민들로부터 피맛골에 대한 정비요구가 많았기에 결국 땅주인들의 욕심과 맞아떨어져 사라지지 않았나 싶습니다. 10여년전 무심히 피맛골을 지나다 개발공고 입간판이 세워져 있는 걸 보고는 저도 많이 씁쓸했답니다. 아직도 그 부근에는 좁은 골목길이 많은데 화재에 대한 대비를 철저히 해서 역사와 옛추억이 서려있는 골목길이 더이상 사라지는 일이 없었으면 하는 바람입니다.
@@박룸바-f6q 저 역시 땅주인들의 욕심을 전혀 비난할 생각이 없습니다. 다만 바람이 있다면 정부와 지자체 차원에서 반대급부적 차원의 적절한 지원과 철저한 화재방지책을 수립해서 관광지역으로 보존한다면 좋지 않을까 하는 생각입니다. 관광자원이 부족한 한국으로서 관광자원이 가져오는 이익 또한 결코 무시할 수 없는 수익원이기 때문이지요.
그냥.. 한국사회는 깊이있는 성장이 아니고 극소수 당사자들의 돈잔치가 우선인 나라라.. 정작 돈주고도 못사는 가치들이 이미 거의 남아있지가 않은 실정이죠 앞으로 더 그렇게 될거고.. 그런 가치들이야말로 진짜 나라 재산이고 먹거리인데.. 그래서 미래가 없는 나라란 소리를 듣는거고 시민들의 삶이 갈수록 힘들어지죠..
정말 어르신들 배려해주셔서 감사해요. 전쟁을 겪으시고 초토화된 나라를 이렇게 멋지게 세워내신 분들입니다. 먹을것이 없어 값싼것들로 먹을것을 만들기도 하셨고 ... 어쩜 가깝게 다가가기 어려운 모습에서 그 인생이 얼마나 험난했는지 말하고 있단 생각을 합니다. 고맙고 현재 우리가 대우하고 존경해야할 분들입니다. 구석구석 이해하시려는 모습에 감동합니다.
As a native Korean I admire your work. Since the moment I watched a shorts of yours, I've watched all of your Dong series and am now planning to do a version of my own as I am a hobbyist photographer. Thank you so much for inspiring me and many others. I am sure a lot of Seoul residents never even thought of visiting the back alleys as our minds are geared towards endless evolution and development of the city meanwhile destroying our own historic legacies. I wish we find a way to preserve the old yet incorporate the new. Thanks again!
종로의 피맛골이 90년대에서 2000년대까지는 술집이나 주점들이 많이 있었고 특히 단성사하고 피카다리 극장이 있어서 영화보고 나온 사람들이 밥을 먹거나 직장인들이 술한잔하러 가는사람들이 많이가던 장소였죠 그리고 한가지 보충설명을 하자면 영상에서 나온 탑골공원이나 종묘등에서 계시는 노인분들은 빈곤층이 많고 독고노인들이 있어서 어디 갈때가 없으니 저런데로 나가서 술먹고 장기두고 친구도 사귀면서 시간을 보내는 경우도 많구요 공짜로 밥을 얻어 먹을려는 분들도 있다는거죠... 정부에서 이런분들에대해서 신경을 써주어야 하는데 안한다는게 현실이라는것을 알려드리는 바입니다...
대부분은 옛날 모습을 간직한 서울의 동네들은 그게 역사적으로 중요해서 경제적 가치를 남기지 않는 이상 거의 재개발로 사라질 운명을 가지고 있어요. 젠트리피케션 문제도 심각하죠.. 제가 사는 동네 주변도 1-2년 사이에 재개발로 아파트나 오피스텔이 싹 들어섰거든요. 그래서 이렇게 한 동씩 자세히 영상을 남기시는 게 더 의미있게 느껴지네요! 건축 관련하신 분들과 협업하셔도 재미있을 것 같아요~~!

종로 피맛골과 탑골 공원을 어르신들이 많이 찾는 이유는 그곳이 서울의 과거의 모습을 가장 많이 간직한 곳이기 때문입니다. 그곳에서 지나간 세월을 느끼며 여가를 보내고 계신 겁니다. 저도 가끔 서울의 옛 모습이 그리워 질때면 서울의 사대문안으로 들어가 산책을 하면서 아직 재개발되기 전의 서울의 정취를 느껴봅니다. The reason why many senior citizens visit Pimatgol and Tapgol Park in Jongno is that it has the most of Seoul's past. They are spending their leisure time there feeling the passing years. Sometimes when I miss the old look of Seoul, I go into the four major gates of Seoul and take a walk and feel the atmosphere of Seoul before it was redeveloped.
Love the concept of this series! Really cool to see you doing that and the way you presented it! Didn’t know the history aspect of the Jongno areas. Keep it up, stoked for the rest of the series!
Oh this is incredible. I can' believe you mapped out all the neighborhoods with plans to go through all of them. I just love the alleyways you visited. That's the Korea I remember as a kid when people knew which shops to go through all from word of mouth. I can't wait until you get to Sindang-dong. I have memories of visiting my grandparents there in the 70s. They lived next door to President Park and shared a wall separating the two hanok style homes. I believe the President's house is still there. My grandmother would bath me by heating the water on a stove in the bath area. So surreal. Their hanok was beautiful with a big courtyard. They employed a young high school girl for the summer I'd visit to chop the wood and heat the house through a furnace underneath the house. I would wake up to the sound of wood chopping and the smell of burning wood. I slept on the floor and there was always a bowl next to me for me to pee in case I couldn't make it to the bathroom (I was probably more scared to look for the bathroom than anything else lol). In those days, for me, I was genuinely scared of the dokgaebee. I think it was a time when a lot of story books and fairy tales included ancient mysticism and old folklore. I don't think kids get that these days. Their hanok also had a separate two story structure where my grandfather would paint in oil and maintain his library of books. It felt like a movie, and maybe because I was so small then. That house had a lot of history for the family as its where my mother and my grandparents lived post-war. Rumor has it that General Park came by to offer my grandfather a bag of rice if he'd offer his support of the coup-de-tat, but was faced with scorn instead. Also, the roads were all dirt back then. I remember the poop truck for the sewage. Oh it smelled bad. I remember there was an exhaust flap on the truck that opened and closed to release some of the fumes. Gag. And also remember walking through the dirt roads to a bustling farmers market with my grandmother. A lot of the shops had a lot of metal and glass with a lot of the sticker writing that we just saw in the alley. For a kid from the states it was magical, a different world. It seems that Koreans don't hold onto the past in Seoul as much. It's only people like you and me that like the old stuff. And then in my teens I had heard my grandparents moved to a "new modern apartment" in Oaksudong. It had plumbing and a washing machine. I was sad. lol. Can't wait for Sindang-dong!!

@@iGoBart My uncle told me that story describing himself as a kid peering out the second story window when he heard the sounds of squeaky wooden wheels on a pull cart dragged on the gravel up to the gate. And watching his father and at the time General Park. Most recently at a funeral in 2019 for my stepfather, I met a friend of my mother who was formerly her tutor when my mother was young. That friend told me that my mother's younger sister (my aunt) and General Park's daughter Park Geun-hye were of the same age and would hold hands to go to school together. I believe it was 2011 when my grandfather passed away and at his funeral people close to him mentioned that Park Geun-hye offered my grandfather the role of Minister of Finance which he declined. Those are the only stories that I know of first hand relating specifically to General Park and my grandfather. But now that I think about this specific question, what I know is that General Park became president and would rule for a long 18 years or so (from my understanding). I believe my grandfather would have had frequent or weekly interactions with Park to advise him on the economy. It's only recently with my limited Korean reading/writing that I've been researching a bit about my grandfather. My grandfather was a "taedu" in economics in Korea. And was from that era where he advised President Rhee, Park, and others as there were very few educated economists at the time. I will copy and paste the title of a youtube video I recently found in the next comment. (RUclips's spam filters doesn't like me mixing English and Korean). I could never rely on my mother for complete facts, but she did say my grandfather appeared often before movies started at the cinema to discuss the state of the economy. And the youtube video seems like what she was talking about. Similar to how post WWII they had done the same in the states (though I'm not sure it was before movies). Now, that I think more about this and seeing the whites of my grandfathers hair in the video through the video is black and white, it should be around late 60s which would have been when Park was president. Sorry that's a long way of saying they probably met many times from what I know. I was my grandfather's oldest grandchild. Some of my uncles would say I was his favorite. But he never talked about his contributions to Korean society as grandiose as they seem when heard second hand. There was a time in Korea when the Seonbis/scholars were probably the most respected and, now knowing this, I think he and his generation of educators were probably the last of the line. I saw with my own eyes as a kid, year by year, how society was changing more towards reverence of people with material wealth. My grandfather hated politics, corruption, and cronyism. So, as I think about it what I was witnessing at the time was his internal conflict of his helping to build a society that would ultimately shift the balance of power/respect in Korean society from the Seonbi to the capital aristocrats. If you want to know more, just let me know and I'd be more than happy to share what little I know with you! I'm trying to learn as much as possible as well. I'm trying to get on some old documentaries on KBS and MBC about my grandfather but it's quite a challenge. I also just learned that President Park's house in Sindang-dong is still there for public viewing. Google shows all the new construction around it today. I hope to visit the area on my next visit. My grandparents house being nextdoor to them is something I just learned within the last 3 years so now I have a marker for where to visit to re-imagine my memories as a child in the 70s. I was born in Korea but moved to a different country when I was young. Back in Korea, both of my parents had demanding careers so my sister and I were raised by our grandmother who still lives in one of these very old neighborhoods. I go back to Seoul every so often to visit her but everytime I go back I can hardly recognize the streets that I used to play in. When the magic of RUclips algorithm brought me here I instantly recognized some of the places that I used to visit with my grandmother. It glades me to see that some of the places in my cherished childhood memories are still there and you are out there documenting these neighborhoods that are going away. Thank you. I will look forward to your Seongbuk and Hyehwa episodes.
Pimatgol has disappeared. It went away when the buildings to the east of Kyobo were erected. The Pimatgol that ran from Kyobo going east was really really cool - with lots of holes in the wall eateries... and theyre gone...
I lived there in the mid-1990's and visited the music shops near Tapgol Park a lot. Back then it was told to me that the feeding of the older folk started as a charity toward Korean War veterans. That area was also the best place to buy musical instruments. You could find ANYTHING there. I miss it alot.

저는 한 때 안전 관련 조사관으로 활동했었기에 오래된 건축물들에 대해선 여러 상반된 감상이 듭니다. 그것들이 가지고 있는 역사적인 사실과, 오래된 문화에 대한 동경, 이 시대를 살아가는 모든 세대들이 그 시절을 향유 할 수 있음에 감사한 마음이 들지만, 현대의 기준에 있어선 안전하지 못하기 때문입니다. 정말 복잡한 문제지요.
I used to live over there, and I love those little back alleys, and fear they'll be gone by the next time I visit! There's also a nostalgia street north of tapgol, I read that they made the area senior friendly and that was one of the features--an area that looked "nostalgic". There's a lot more of these pimatgol type streets and shops between jongno & euljiro around sewoon sannga, but a lot of it is being destroyed by the government. If you go on the roof of Sewoon Sannga you can see the whole layout. I went on a tour of the old fabrication shops there, some of which date back to the 50s. I was told young people dont want to learn the trades so the elderly shop owners are giving up spaces, and the government wants to clean it up, make new buildings. The tour guide said the government really didn't want to allow his tour because it shows a "run down" side. But there's all kinds of restaurants and bars back there. I was always told the old men go to Tapgol because thats where the elderly bacchus women are. I can't speak to that, but there definitely was a leery vibe over there if I'd walk through at certain times. There's some areas that are still pretty busy like squid & beer street, but then there are a lot of love hotels and men's spas too. It felt like a Seoul that wasn't around much anymore!

탑골공원이 노인분들이 젊은이었을 때 핫플레이스 중 하나였다고 하더라고요
다른 곳은 재개발되어서 거의 없어졌지만
탑골공원만은 그대로 남아 그 나이대 어르신들이 계속 찾는다고 하시네요
나중에 홍대같은 곳이 종로의 모습이 될수도 있겠네요..

앞으로 10년,20년,30년이 지나면 이 영상이 매우 귀한 영상이 될것 같습니다.
미래에는 많은 변화가 생기고, 영상속 할아버지,할머니들 그리고 오래된 가게들도 많이 사라지겠죠.

종로는 점점 산업화가 되서 사라진가게랑 풍경이 너무 그리워요. 저는 20대가 불과 10년 전이지만 재개발로 종로모습은 많이 변했어요. 종로뿐만아니라 제 학창시절 추억이 있던 동네들도요. 그래서 많이 씁쓸해요

20년 전에 피맛골에서 고갈비(고등어구이)에 막걸리 파는 곳이 있었는데 정말 맛집이였어요.

아 구령마을 가까워요!
대부분은 옛날 모습을 간직한 서울의 동네들은 그게 역사적으로 중요해서 경제적 가치를 남기지 않는 이상 거의 재개발로 사라질 운명을 가지고 있어요. 젠트리피케션 문제도 심각하죠.. 제가 사는 동네 주변도 1-2년 사이에 재개발로 아파트나 오피스텔이 싹 들어섰거든요. 그래서 이렇게 한 동씩 자세히 영상을 남기시는 게 더 의미있게 느껴지네요! 건축 관련하신 분들과 협업하셔도 재미있을 것 같아요~~!

종로 피맛골과 탑골 공원을 어르신들이 많이 찾는 이유는 그곳이 서울의 과거의 모습을 가장 많이 간직한 곳이기 때문입니다. 그곳에서 지나간 세월을 느끼며 여가를 보내고 계신 겁니다. 저도 가끔 서울의 옛 모습이 그리워 질때면 서울의 사대문안으로 들어가 산책을 하면서 아직 재개발되기 전의 서울의 정취를 느껴봅니다.
The reason why many senior citizens visit Pimatgol and Tapgol Park in Jongno is that it has the most of Seoul's past. They are spending their leisure time there feeling the passing years. Sometimes when I miss the old look of Seoul, I go into the four major gates of Seoul and take a walk and feel the atmosphere of Seoul before it was redeveloped.
Love the concept of this series! Really cool to see you doing that and the way you presented it! Didn’t know the history aspect of the Jongno areas. Keep it up, stoked for the rest of the series!

Oh this is incredible. I can' believe you mapped out all the neighborhoods with plans to go through all of them. I just love the alleyways you visited. That's the Korea I remember as a kid when people knew which shops to go through all from word of mouth. I can't wait until you get to Sindang-dong. I have memories of visiting my grandparents there in the 70s. They lived next door to President Park and shared a wall separating the two hanok style homes. I believe the President's house is still there. My grandmother would bath me by heating the water on a stove in the bath area. So surreal. Their hanok was beautiful with a big courtyard. They employed a young high school girl for the summer I'd visit to chop the wood and heat the house through a furnace underneath the house. I would wake up to the sound of wood chopping and the smell of burning wood. I slept on the floor and there was always a bowl next to me for me to pee in case I couldn't make it to the bathroom (I was probably more scared to look for the bathroom than anything else lol). In those days, for me, I was genuinely scared of the dokgaebee. I think it was a time when a lot of story books and fairy tales included ancient mysticism and old folklore. I don't think kids get that these days. Their hanok also had a separate two story structure where my grandfather would paint in oil and maintain his library of books. It felt like a movie, and maybe because I was so small then. That house had a lot of history for the family as its where my mother and my grandparents lived post-war. Rumor has it that General Park came by to offer my grandfather a bag of rice if he'd offer his support of the coup-de-tat, but was faced with scorn instead. Also, the roads were all dirt back then. I remember the poop truck for the sewage. Oh it smelled bad. I remember there was an exhaust flap on the truck that opened and closed to release some of the fumes. Gag. And also remember walking through the dirt roads to a bustling farmers market with my grandmother. A lot of the shops had a lot of metal and glass with a lot of the sticker writing that we just saw in the alley. For a kid from the states it was magical, a different world. It seems that Koreans don't hold onto the past in Seoul as much. It's only people like you and me that like the old stuff. And then in my teens I had heard my grandparents moved to a "new modern apartment" in Oaksudong. It had plumbing and a washing machine. I was sad. lol. Can't wait for Sindang-dong!!

@@iGoBart My uncle told me that story describing himself as a kid peering out the second story window when he heard the sounds of squeaky wooden wheels on a pull cart dragged on the gravel up to the gate. And watching his father and at the time General Park. Most recently at a funeral in 2019 for my stepfather, I met a friend of my mother who was formerly her tutor when my mother was young. That friend told me that my mother's younger sister (my aunt) and General Park's daughter Park Geun-hye were of the same age and would hold hands to go to school together. I believe it was 2011 when my grandfather passed away and at his funeral people close to him mentioned that Park Geun-hye offered my grandfather the role of Minister of Finance which he declined. Those are the only stories that I know of first hand relating specifically to General Park and my grandfather.
But now that I think about this specific question, what I know is that General Park became president and would rule for a long 18 years or so (from my understanding). I believe my grandfather would have had frequent or weekly interactions with Park to advise him on the economy. It's only recently with my limited Korean reading/writing that I've been researching a bit about my grandfather. My grandfather was a "taedu" in economics in Korea. And was from that era where he advised President Rhee, Park, and others as there were very few educated economists at the time.
I will copy and paste the title of a youtube video I recently found in the next comment. (RUclips's spam filters doesn't like me mixing English and Korean). I could never rely on my mother for complete facts, but she did say my grandfather appeared often before movies started at the cinema to discuss the state of the economy. And the youtube video seems like what she was talking about. Similar to how post WWII they had done the same in the states (though I'm not sure it was before movies). Now, that I think more about this and seeing the whites of my grandfathers hair in the video through the video is black and white, it should be around late 60s which would have been when Park was president.
Sorry that's a long way of saying they probably met many times from what I know. I was my grandfather's oldest grandchild. Some of my uncles would say I was his favorite. But he never talked about his contributions to Korean society as grandiose as they seem when heard second hand. There was a time in Korea when the Seonbis/scholars were probably the most respected and, now knowing this, I think he and his generation of educators were probably the last of the line. I saw with my own eyes as a kid, year by year, how society was changing more towards reverence of people with material wealth. My grandfather hated politics, corruption, and cronyism. So, as I think about it what I was witnessing at the time was his internal conflict of his helping to build a society that would ultimately shift the balance of power/respect in Korean society from the Seonbi to the capital aristocrats. If you want to know more, just let me know and I'd be more than happy to share what little I know with you! I'm trying to learn as much as possible as well. I'm trying to get on some old documentaries on KBS and MBC about my grandfather but it's quite a challenge.
I also just learned that President Park's house in Sindang-dong is still there for public viewing. Google shows all the new construction around it today. I hope to visit the area on my next visit. My grandparents house being nextdoor to them is something I just learned within the last 3 years so now I have a marker for where to visit to re-imagine my memories as a child in the 70s.

믿어지지 않겠지만 저 노인분들이 젊었을때 저기가 강남이고 홍대였습니다. 멀티플렉스 이전에 모든 영화관이 몰려 있었고, 불과 20~30년전만 해도 많은 연인들의 데이트 장소였습니다.
이렇게 생각하니 뭔가 슬프네요ㅠㅠ

I was born in Korea but moved to a different country when I was young. Back in Korea, both of my parents had demanding careers so my sister and I were raised by our grandmother who still lives in one of these very old neighborhoods. I go back to Seoul every so often to visit her but everytime I go back I can hardly recognize the streets that I used to play in.
When the magic of RUclips algorithm brought me here I instantly recognized some of the places that I used to visit with my grandmother. It glades me to see that some of the places in my cherished childhood memories are still there and you are out there documenting these neighborhoods that are going away.

사실 순댓국에 들어있는 머릿고기와 내장은 외국인에게 살짝 거부감이 있을수 있죠
하지만 내국인들도 호불호가 갈릴수 있는데 대부분 순대보다 내장이 더 많으면 좋아하는 사람이 많습니다
내장에는 근육보다 비타민이 더 많다고 합니다.

경기도는 "도" 이다 보니 서울시보다 훨씬 면적도 넓고 시도 장난아니게 많아서 힘들 수도 있을거 같네요 ㅋㅎㅋㅎㅋㅎ 성남시도 3개의 구 (중원구 수정구 분당구) 가 있는데 각 구마다 특색이 달라서 가볼 곳은 많을거 같아요!

Pimatgol has disappeared. It went away when the buildings to the east of Kyobo were erected.
The Pimatgol that ran from Kyobo going east was really really cool - with lots of holes in the wall eateries... and theyre gone...
I lived there in the mid-1990's and visited the music shops near Tapgol Park a lot. Back then it was told to me that the feeding of the older folk started as a charity toward Korean War veterans. That area was also the best place to buy musical instruments. You could find ANYTHING there. I miss it alot.

저는 한 때 안전 관련 조사관으로 활동했었기에 오래된 건축물들에 대해선 여러 상반된 감상이 듭니다. 그것들이 가지고 있는 역사적인 사실과, 오래된 문화에 대한 동경, 이 시대를 살아가는 모든 세대들이 그 시절을 향유 할 수 있음에 감사한 마음이 들지만, 현대의 기준에 있어선 안전하지 못하기 때문입니다. 정말 복잡한 문제지요.
I used to live over there, and I love those little back alleys, and fear they'll be gone by the next time I visit! There's also a nostalgia street north of tapgol, I read that they made the area senior friendly and that was one of the features--an area that looked "nostalgic". There's a lot more of these pimatgol type streets and shops between jongno & euljiro around sewoon sannga, but a lot of it is being destroyed by the government. If you go on the roof of Sewoon Sannga you can see the whole layout. I went on a tour of the old fabrication shops there, some of which date back to the 50s. I was told young people dont want to learn the trades so the elderly shop owners are giving up spaces, and the government wants to clean it up, make new buildings. The tour guide said the government really didn't want to allow his tour because it shows a "run down" side. But there's all kinds of restaurants and bars back there. I was always told the old men go to Tapgol because thats where the elderly bacchus women are. I can't speak to that, but there definitely was a leery vibe over there if I'd walk through at certain times. There's some areas that are still pretty busy like squid & beer street, but then there are a lot of love hotels and men's spas too. It felt like a Seoul that wasn't around much anymore!
