As a veteran of dozens, if not hundreds, of 800 meter competitions, this is a case of shit happens. Mu was doing what you do on the back stretch of the first lap of the race - vie for position. It’s a fast race, and you have tunnel vision at that point. It’s all about getting inside position going into turn two.

She has changed for worse is racing strategic. Before she started training with KERSEY , she was always at the front of the race ,commanding the race from the start to the finish line ,with confidence and power . Now she runs on the pack and with a lack of confidence on herself. Change your coach MU ASAP

  • @strang35

She hasn’t run this year due to injury. I agree that Kersee is not the right coach for her, but I also think she is facing some burnout issues. She has to find the love for the sport and it looks like she is battling.

Who were the two women marquee track and field athletes of the USA after the Tokyo Olympics?
    Athing Mu and
    Sydney McLaughlin
Besides being the two top stars of the track world with Olympic Golds, what else do they have in common?
They both quit the coaches that took them to the top and joined Bobby Kersey.
    What has happened since then.
1.) they have run progressively slower over the years he’s coached them.
2.) they each only run one or two races per year. (What kind of world class athelete in any sport only bothers to compete one event per year?
3.) They haven’t won any major championship in two years. They should have been racking up wins in Diamond League meets, the top four meets in the U.S., getting Diamond League championships and World Championships every year.
It’s a crying shame. Two of the most exciting runners in the world, in their absolute primes, and they hardly ever get to compete in their sport.
The number of races run just since the Olympics by Femke Bol (Sydney’s main rival) and Keely Hodgekinson (Athing’s main rival) make Athing and Sydney look like they’re not even part of the sport.

    • @jaredmatthews8585

I can understand what you’re trying to say about Kersee and his athletes not running in meets as much as they maybe need to or as much as we would like to see. But I wouldn’t group Sydney in with all of these statements you’re making. She has won a major championship in the last 2 years (the world championships 2022). The only reason she didn’t run in worlds last year is because she got hurt . And she definitely has NOT been running progressively slower times over the last 2years whatsoever. she was running incredibly fast in the open 400 (48.74 almost the American record) in 2023 when she was focusing on that event , one that’s not even her specialty. I believe she still has the world lead in the open 400 for this year, until yesterday she had the 2nd fastest 200m in the world this year , again not her specialty, and literally just now broke her own WORLD RECORD..AGAIN in the 400m hurdles. Sydney is absolutely not running progressively slower times under Kersee like you’ve suggested.
Obviously as spectators we would love to see the athletes we love , to go up against their rivals ad many times they can. But it seems that Bob Kersee and Sydney have found a way that works for them to be very successful. No we don’t see her run “as much” but every time she steps on the track, she is lazer focused and prepared to do what we know her to do. And who knows , if the goal is longevity, maybe not running a whole bunch of meets right now is purposeful. They are both still very young and could have a lot of years ahead of them in the sport. And with syd especially, she has the potential to compete in other events i.e. the open 400 and challenge and hopefully break records there too. She’s only 24, I’m okay with her competing conservatively if it means we get another decade or so of this kind of stuff.

She wasn't tripped up - she tripped herself up by blindly moving to her left like a novice...... she should get a warning because she cost a couple a girls the chance to go to the Olympics (Sage for example and Gracie - the girl who threw herself over the line to qualify for the final). She should receive some sort of penalty... but whatever is done, probably nothing, she possibly possibly ruined the careers of some girls in that race.... I follow you on tiktok, and I stated in the comments that this is devasting, but she's young. She can try again several times over. A lot of mid-distance runners run well into their thirties... But to add on to what you said, I agree with you. This was the best thing for her. Even she said she was given too much responsibility too early. Now she can spend the next year, trying to figure out if this is what she wants and if there is a world's (hopefully), she can regain her world title back. Then she has a few more years to decide again if this is really what she still wants to do. And if it is, she can continue competing at worlds each year and go to the Olympic trials in 2028 and try again... lastly, maybe this is her karma, unfortunately. Nia Akins was tripped by her point blank in the Tokyo trials. It wasn't intentional, but Athing made contact with her as she was moving in and hit arms, and then Nia tripped over Athing's legs. It was not intentional for both falls, but I think Nia lost her moment and was the best contender for Athing. Now, between the world's last year and the trials this year, Nia gets a shot at greatness. ❤

If she wants to be a great 800m runner, which she already is, but it could end tomorrow, she needs a coach who coaches 800m runners and she needs to run a bunch of 800m races so that 1) she can work on her self-preservations skills, and 2) she can stop stressing out about losing. Bobby Kersee is a manipulative BSer of a coach. Maybe he's a great coach for Sydney, but he certainly shouldn't be coaching Mu who needs to work on her pack racing skills and needs to stop stressing out about her performances.

This commentator knows what he is talking about. She had poor coaching. Maybe he is good with some athletes but not her. What worked in 2021 is what is right for her. Strategy wise, if she couldnt get to the lead and the pole on the first straightaway, get to the pole in the back of the pack and accelerate coming out of the turn. That had to be drilled into her, especially since she is the fastest sprinter in the field. A 60 followed by a 56 would have won. Even if she tied up , she would have gotten top 3. I suspect she is not in top shape and wanted the lead to slow the pace by her reputation . She panicked when it didn't go that way.
In her present shape, she stood no chance in Paris anyway. If she gets in shape and her motivation back, she can have 4 more great years. 2024 is not her year but Ill enjoy watching her the next few years. If she wants to put in the miles, she might even be the best 1500 runner we have had since Mary Decker. If not, Nike paid her well for her last gold medal, invest it and have a great life.

Bro. I have been saying this all day. I blame Bobby Kersee for this whole fiasco. All his athletes are mediocre at trials. They are not race sharp. Hardly raced all season. I never bought the story of them not going to intl meets. I hope this strategy doesn’t jinx Sidney and Keni Harrison too.

@pewithcoachlong7100 Athing clipping herself is a symptom of a bigger underlying issue which is that she was not race sharp, not at her peak fitness and not feeling confident enough to race ahead and avoid the pack as she used to do. His athletes barely raced all year and it showed. Jenna, Morolake, Keni Harrison, it might be working for Sydney but it is not necessarily good for all events and all athletes. He is the one putting all his athletes in one "non racing" bucket

    • @JimTeech
      @JimTeech 4 месяца назад

I don't want to use your name ( bimbo) because you obviously know what you are talking about. You don't just show up for the trials and hope everyone is scared of you. I think there is more to this story and Kersee knew she wasn't ready to run faster than 1:58 or worse and he wanted her to get the lead and control the pace by her reputation. They had no plan B . She had to fall back if they weren't going to respect her. Some runners can tuck themselves into the middle of a pack and thrive. She can't. She needs room to float. Go to the back, grab the pole and sprint the last 300 in lane 2.

    • @abimbolasulaiman9302
      @abimbolasulaiman9302 4 месяца назад

@JimTeech Athing has been on a slow slide downwards since she joined formula Kersee. All her great achievements were with her former coach. I think the first curse of the Kersee team is arrogance. It might be working for Sidney but it won't necessarily work for everyone. Athing was racing loads when she was high-achieving. This semi-celeb lifestyle in LA modeling and hobnobing with Oprah while not racing in 9 months is clearly not working. I am a fan of hers but not disappointed. She was in no shape to race Keely Hodgkinson and Mary Moraa. Add Nia Akins to that list now.

  • @noinnurt

Just run the 400 meters for a season or two - or stay there, where the lanes protect long-legged runners..
    Or find a middle-distance mentor.
She needs to run from the back and swing wide and crush everyone.
International runners and teams will always clip her from behind, so running from the front might not always be a safe way to go.

Probably 90% of you have never cleared a salary of $100,000 but you want to criticize and attack this young woman. She is 22 years of age. She became an Olympic champion at 18. This translates into she has the discipline and commitment to the sport. As an athlete, she probably has continually pushed herself to certain limits that creates injuries. All of you were the ones calling about the demise of ShaCarri Richardson. The young woman was only 19. She proved all the doubters and haters wrong. But the great part of this story. oh well, it just wasn't meant to be.......I also think runners, especially ones that are involved in races where there are no stay in your lane requirements, should train on how to recover from a fall and try to roll back to your feet as fast as possible and then of course slowly but surely work your way back to the pack........the problem with the 800 though, is that the race is simply not long enough for you to recover even with a decent fall recovery as time and track is simply not on your side; whereas, the 1500 possibly allows some ability at getting back into the thick of things depending upon when a fall would happen.........

whew.... now Erin this is off a little lolol... you know you talking out the side of your neck. There is nothing Bobby Could do when people make up a decision. She didn't want to run so she didn't run. He would talk and say he is trying to get her ready to break a WR and you gotta get strong but she went on the Pivot podcast talking about she wanna model lol... Also Athing had emotional things that were going on you forget BRANDON asked to come in that camp with her and when they started having troubles in their relationship she stopped running. We always used to say last year that Brandon was pulling her down. So please don't blame the coach, you gotta blame the athlete on this one ( i was like why did sis try to merge over in the bunch like that ) I mean if USATF would do the things that USATF do ( you know ) they could have pull some strings had one of the 3 that got in didn't have the olympic standard but nope. So NBC don't have to pull those commercials maybe they will allow her on the 4x400. I would take her for sure. You don't like him, but I believe ALL ATHLETES should be in therapy EVERY week just like Noah and it should be PAID FOR BY THESE SHOE COMPANIES ( thats a whole other issue about how yall don't get paid enough ). This sport doesn't allow you to have bad emotional days because it accepts your performance and your money. I felt so bad for her, for Raeyvn, and the other young lady who was pushed off the track and had to get back in the groove. The 3 ladies that did get in prayers for them because everybody in these social media streets don't see them even getting out the heats let alone the semis. So I hope they prove everybody wrong.

He had suggested that Athing should only run the 800 and 1500m so that Sydney Mclaughlin could compete in both the 400mh and the flat 400m. It seemed as though Athing was only allowed into Kersee's training group to be Sydney's pacesetter ?!!

    3 things.
Leave that camp. It ain’t working. Last year you got beat bc you weren’t in shape. If u were in shape, ud be world champion.
2-You need to run more. You can’t show up and be in shape. You are getting injured bc you are out of shape. She must not be traning seriously.
3- Racing strategy. You can’t run the way you are. I like Athing but she was going to get smoked at the Olympics. Kelly ran a 155.
Athing stop trying to be cute and just run. You will make more money being a champ then being cute. Sydney does the same but she’s focused. She went to the trials and told the world IM THE BEST. Femke you have to come through me.

I literally just typed this in another comment! That segment where they had her sitting on that throne, while recapping her bronze-place finish at last year's World's, had an extremely arrogant air about it. She said, "That won't happen again!" In the moment that I saw it a couple of nights ago, I knew that the pride would cause a fall. I hope she will take this as a life lesson to always have some humility and to keep her priorities in order. She truly is a wonderfully talented athlete. Noah was also humbled back at the World's in '22 when he stated that there was no way the men's 4x1 would lose that race...until they did in the final. The Jamaican women who ran the 4x1 were also humbled in that Championship. The looks on their faces after the USA squad won were that of incredible shock and disbelief. Even though I am a huge Noah Lyles fan, he's treading a fine line right now. He can keep his verbosity, competitiveness, personality, and determination, but I hope he will also remember that too much pride will lead to defeat. The future is unknown, unforseen, and the smallest event could change one's trajectory. Stay humble and thankful. ❤ I was absolutely devastated for Christian Coleman, though. That one hurt my heart. 😢

@fredball8240 Thanks! I want nothing more than to see our entire Team USA represent and come back with tons of wins, but each individual athlete must remember that humility will elevate, pride will decimate. It is tried and true. I also recall a US Open a few years ago where the segment on Serena Williams was similar to that of what they just did with Athing. They called her the "Queen of NY" or something like that, and she was basically guaranteeing her win while donning a crown. She, too, was humbled in the final and lost. Confidence with humility and gratefulness is one thing. Egregious pride is another. I hope all of our athletes remember this important truth when they go to represent our Stars and Stripes. ❤️🇺🇲💙
