I can't begin to explain how much I hate touch controls on everything. Why do manufacturers think that's a good idea? Why not just replace the steering wheel with a touch screen while you're at it.
They think it's a good idea because it saves them a fortune when they build a screen that software puts buttons on compared to a custom manufactured HVAC module.
The price is ridiculous, but one of the things that makes this car appealing to me is how understated it is. It's very subtle, but if you know about cars, you know how refined these are.
I agree, this is for the GLE buyer that doesn’t want to be the center of attention or at least doesn’t want others to envy them. However, I always quite liked the Tuareg bcs even tho understated, it always had it’s own identity. This looks like Atlas and Tiguan had a baby, and most of identity is in my opinion lost.
My parents have a first gen VW Touareg and it still runs like new. It's great for long drives, has amazing acceleration for overtaking and is suprisingly very capable off road, especially given that my parents live in Kenya and have taken that car to some of the most remote places, fording through rivers and not once has it ever stalled or broken down. The only drawback is fuel consumption, but all in all, the Touareg is one of the best SUVs you can get out there if you want style, practicality and capability without the overinflated price tag of a Range Rover.
Great review. I bought this R version 2 years ago and it’s been a great car. Especially on long trips with the family and our dog. Plenty of room for everyone and luggage and this thing is really comfortable even if you spent over 10 hours behind the wheel. Best family car I have ever owned. Worth the price.
condensation: when reported as a fault, on a Skoda Octavia (2021), it was explained (in the service), that this isn't a bug, but a feature. in order to match the external atmospheric pressure, VAG headlights have "breather holes" (similarly to airline double/triple sheet windows). as long as the condensation is on the surface, like a misty layer, it's ok. the heat of the headlights should evaporate them and it'd not cause any damage. but if the water/condensation amount turns into a "puddle" in the headlights (or any lights for that matter), it needs to be addressed and it's probably the result of a crack (and not just the breather hole). this was a Skoda Service explaining this issue.
same for me at the VW dealership. When the droplets started to finally form, the car was still under the warranty, they said that they found micro fractures or a number of them and these started to cause the issue. I have had my front lights fogging up from the moment i drove off the dealership after i took the delivery of my car in late 2018... they said i am to blame for the cracks/fractures even though the headlamps were not damaged, did not have any signs of any accidents, not to mention i have never had a front collision what so ever. great service
This can be the cause for some 'condensation' issues. If it corrects itself after a few minutes or is not an issue at higher temps, your golden, if it persists, it's clearly a fault.

Have just traded my 5 year old Touareg onto a new Q5 Sportback . I miss the air suspension my Q5 lacks, but what I don't miss is the everything-on-touchscreen controls. The Q5 has buttons and switches for aircon and several other key functions that are far easier to use the touchscreen ones. People complain about VW's haptic buttons on the steering wheel. After driving our VW ID. for a year, I've come to appreciate the haptic buttons. Their main advantage is swiping. You don’t need to look down or fidget when you swipe. Simplicity. It took me by surprise when I realized how swiping works on the steering wheel. It’s very intuitive. When you need to adjust ACC cruising speed or sound volume or skip songs, you just swipe your thumbs across the middle of those panels , effortless - no need to look down or find the right buttons. Stunning, yes. If you're 12 years old and love christmas lights more than anything. They should have made the whole thing twinkle too, that way you would never mistake it for anything other than a decorated pinetree.
I’ve just sold my 2019 Touareg R via Carwow (great experience) and have loved it for the last 3 years: massive boot space for family & doggy stuff, and just so easy to drive. Soooo comfortable and spacious too. I take delivery of the 2024 black edition next week and looking forward to those modest upgrades/improvements 👍 VW
I had one as a rental while touring around Europe this summer and was floored at how nice it was compared to the (dumbed down) Atlas that we get in North America.
I have a 2023 R and what a car, you are correct it doesn't feel like the usual SUV, it feels like a big car which is one of the think that attracted me to it along with the understated appearance. to be fair, the wipers are like that in probably every volkswagen, my golfs were like that, my dad's passat was like that, my uncle's troc is like that. to put them in maintenence mode, you can just turn on the ignition, the turn it off and press the wipers lever down. they will go down without fiddling with the infontainment system
Matt, car manufacturers in the EU are pricing themselves out, that is never a 65 to 70 thousand pound car. The industry is heading for a massive crash both in EV and ICE variants
All new cars are more expensive now, than they were a few years ago. It starts from the bottom - where a base spec, under powered Ford Focus costs £27k, a Skoda Kodiak is £55k, BMW M3 from £83k plus options. This is priced in lined with everything else around it.
I think if manufacturers insist on touchscreen-only for basic car functions, they should include lane keeping assist and adaptive cruise control as standard. This isn't specific to any car or manufacturer, it's just common sense imo.
@@bikeman123this ist the typical answer of people never using the indicator. Lane Assist only is disturbing if you do not use the indicator at all...in all other cases it is just a save Feature and normal driving more comfortable.

VW are no longer offering the 90 litre fuel tank (used to be an option or part of the off road pack), they're only offering the standard 75 litre, which with an economy of around 32 mpg (as shown in video), you only get around 530 miles between fuel stops. My Fabia with a 45 litre tank can manage over 530 miles between fuel stops.
@@Bogdan00 UK market they're not offering the 90 litre tank as an option or part of the off road pack, they're still offering the off road pack in UK market (basically some extra plastic under the engine and gearbox) but the 90 litre tank is NOT part of it, confirmed by an email From Volkswagen customer Services UK.
24hrs of ownership report: 282 hp V6 diesel. Very impressed, quick, quiet and comfortable - 200 mile run including typical motorway run avg 38.5 mpg. Lights are excellent and its big inside. 20 grand less than a Q7, go figure.
@@Enko063 Interesting, just checked and not to my surprise the Q7 has a smaller boot capacity of 740ltr vs Toureg at 810. ‘Luxury’ difference is subjective. Agree that Audis brand is stronger because of very effective marketing. That is my point, you pay £15k more for a badge. I like Audi, but was shocked at just how far the manufacturers are pushing the price of their premium brands - too far in my opinion. But we are all different.
Completely agree that the Q7 is not in any meaningful way more luxurious than the Touareg, and that anyway will be greatly affected by how you spec the car, such that a fully loaded Touareg will feel more luxurious than a Q7 with no optional extras. And a point to note on that is that there are optional extras that are available on the Touareg but not on the Q7, such as Nightvision and the All-Wheel steering that only comes as standard on the top Q7 Vorsprung model - you can’t get it as an option on the other Q7 models. Audi it seems playing the same marketing game as BMW with respect to the Integral Active Steering on the X5 - the 2024 LCI (facelift) - that in the UK at least only coming as standard on the M60i - not available as an option on the M Sport or xDrive models despite that the IAS option still appears on the UK configurator but is not selectable, which is just messing people about in my view - where has their respect for customers gone?! Hence I am now buying a Touareg Black Edition TDI 286 hp (fully loaded) not an X5, and with discount including hefty VW manufacturers deposit contribution (with BMW only modest dealer discount available) the Touareg comes out at about £20,000 less than an equivalently specced X5 3.0d! As for Audi Q7, that is a good car and I did consider the Vorsprung model but would not ever need 7 seats - rather have the additional space under the boot floor for a spare wheel, which I need to have when towing, but which Audi can’t supply for the Q7 (there’s no room for it) whereas it a factory fitted option for the Touareg.
@@maaasaa Audi has 875l/2050l capacity, 740l si hybrid. 😂 Q7 is long around 5.10m also wider than Toureg, much more leg room and 3 row seats. Also, interior is much more refined and quality is higher. Have you seen in this video this part?
I moved to SUVs when it became apparent many years ago that British roads weren't going to get any better. I've had to upsize a few times, as the potholes are so bad, but my current 3-ton behemoth just glides over the worst road surfaces in Europe like they're not there. Brilliant! Don't have to think about them any more. Of course, when my 3-ton SUV "glides" over those potholes and broken surfaces, it leaves them just a little bit worse. But I don't care - I'm alright, Jack. This is Britain! Someone else can deal with it for me.
It's like that in the US as well. Automakers back in the 20th century made sedans, and hatchbacks with a lot of ground clearance. Now they are all trying to be as low and impractical as possible. It's baffling how Automakers think we all live in areas with pristine flat roads. Even if your roads are good, if you life in a area with hills or mountains you can hit something on roads connecting to each there at different angles. You can be careful but after driving a car for years or thousands of miles mistakes will happen. Not all crossovers are much better but the ones that are make it a no brianer. Plus the plastic cladding being hit doesn't look as bad as the painted metal. I would like a lifted up station wagon. But will probably go for a crossover or suv for my next car.
Fron the Philippines here. I'm a volkswagen enthusiast. I drive a restored 1971 superbeetle as a daily driver in Tacloban City, Leyte. At the height of the covid pandemic May 2021, I bought a 2004 3.2 gasoline engine Vr6 VW Touareg. I was a low mileage import from California. The car had issues which my mechanic solved by replacing with genuine parts. In my own honest opinion, first generation Touareg was the best in terms of looks, luxury, and off road capability. The first generation Touareg was muscular looking and the body styling was conservative and the lines had that flowing classic look. I hope that the first generation touareg will become a classic. The one I have is a solid car and I feel safe inside considering that it is almost 20 years old.. The new generation has lost it's distinctive VW look. Unless you look at the logo you will not know that it's a VW. I hope that VW will go back to the concept of the original touareg. Just sharing my thoughts.
My 2004 VW Touareg is ideal for the conditions in the Philippines espscially during the typhoon season months. This is the time of the year in which floods, typhoons, moonsoon rains, and landslides happen.
Never really cared for the Touareg and Always aspired to drive a BMW X5 someday. However, I currently drive a 2.0 TDi Tiguan and I'm convinced my next car will be a 3.0 TDI V6 Touareg. Love it!!
Firstly sending my thoughts and prayers to you Brian.. secondly thankyou for sharing your story it's so important to get the message out there.. wishing you good and improving health....
The Touareg rides on VW Group's MLB Evo chassis which is also shared with the Cayenne, Q7, Q8, Urus and Bentayga. Imagine buying an Urus or Bentayga thinking you have a premium unique SUV meanwhile it's just a fancier Touareg 🤣🤣🤣
The Touareg isn't cheap either... and I do not think that the chassis is bad. In the other cars you pay for sure the brand, but also the engines and the higher quality of the materials used for the interiors. I think saying that they are just a fancier Touareg is not 100% exact, but I anyway agree that in that case one would expect more exclusivity. It is also true that those brands just followed the trend of the new markets, selling to the devil their true historic heritage.
Matt, every VAG group car has way quicker way to put wipers into service mode, turn engine off and tap down wiper stalk and the wipers goes to service mode, no faff at all with
Quality seems questionable, headlights already have water vapour/ condensation inside, seems poorly sealed, that's not something you want to see in a brand new car.
What did they do to my former suitor? I owned one of the first imported to the US in 2004. Had a Touareg get together of members of the Touareg forum. Had 10-15 parked on my front lawn. V8. Loved it. Put almost 200k miles before parting ways. Guys on forum imported stop start button, paddle shifters, it was awesome.
Condensation inside the headlight of a brand new car….good to see their qaulity hasn’t changed. Loved my tdv8 touregs over the years but my 2019 tdv6 was hideous (electrical and sensor faults from 50,000 onwards). EXACTLY the same issues with by bitdi r line Passat wagon. I flicked all these and the partners gti for exactly the same reasons. By contrast I still have my ed30 I’ve had from new, and 2 sisters still have the 2.8 b5.5 wagon and 3.2 b6 wagons I sold years and years ago and they’re still fine with normal maintenance. VW has lost its way well and truley I’m afraid.
As an owner of a VW Passat and Audi Q5 since 2014. I'm done with the cars built by VW group. While I liked both cars, I've spent around $20K on repairs of both cars in the past 10 years. Main issues being: Water pumps of both cars replaced because they both had plastic parts which wore after 4-6 years. VW passat's gearbox mechatronic unit, Audi Q5's sunroof sunshade cover ( which has pretty much the same technology as the one in the reviewed Tiguan and costs 1K-2K to replace and they break easily). VW passat's Lower control arms ( both sides) and much more. Their parts are pricy and repairs are expensive. My VW has 120K Kms and Audi has 150 K kms on their odometers and have always been looked after and driven carefully. Their problems started after 60K kms and kept coming. Interestingly, I don't see much of technology change and VW group keeps using the same technologies with trivial modifications after a decade. Including that terrible sunroof cover which I mentioned earlier. It's time for me to get rid of both cars.
The pure gasoline version of the Touareg 3.0t V6 features auxiliary radiators on both sides of the front grille, providing a larger cooling area. However, on this hybrid model, it seems that they have been downgraded, despite the engine outputting the same power.

£67K?😮............I don't think so
I also reviewed the Touareg and must say the interior is only thing that trumps Audi Q7 and Porsche Cayenne
I had one as a rental while touring around Europe this summer and was floored at how nice it was compared to the (dumbed down) Atlas that we get in North America.
Don't understand it anyway why you have to deal with the Atlas in the US.
@@MudvayneS10 It's due to the widely spread "bigger is better" mentality.

13:51 Mat resisted the urge to throw the load cover into a bush 😂
I think if manufacturers insist on touchscreen-only for basic car functions, they should include lane keeping assist and adaptive cruise control as standard. This isn't specific to any car or manufacturer, it's just common sense imo.

My 15 plate Golf TDI does around 500 on a full tank if sensible... not bad

24hrs of ownership report: 282 hp V6 diesel. Very impressed, quick, quiet and comfortable - 200 mile run including typical motorway run avg 38.5 mpg. Lights are excellent and its big inside. 20 grand less than a Q7, go figure.
Q7 is larger vehicle also luxurious.

At least they get V8/W12
All Bentleys have Audi A3 steering wheel.😂😅😢😢
Sharing a platform does not mean it's the same car. They are vastly different in reality.
Oh no, what a bummer this allows for cheaper spare parts 😢

Condensation inside the headlight of a brand new car….good to see their qaulity hasn’t changed. Loved my tdv8 touregs over the years but my 2019 tdv6 was hideous (electrical and sensor faults from 50,000 onwards). EXACTLY the same issues with by bitdi r line Passat wagon. By contrast I still have my ed30 I’ve had from new, and 2 sisters still have the 2.8 b5.5 wagon and 3.2 b6 wagons I sold years and years ago and they’re still fine with normal maintenance. VW has lost its way well and truley I’m afraid.

That's why I bought a Q5 Sportback when I sold my MY2019 Touareg... also don't need the towing capacity or room any more 😊
As an owner of a VW Passat and Audi Q5 since 2014.
The only negative is that don’t come at 7 seats
Sometimes I think Matt creates problems where there is none, really basic and stupid things that in normal life you wouldn’t notice
