  • What's the best type of hair relaxer to use on my hair? This is a question I often get asked. However, because we all have our own unique hair type and texture, it's not a straight forward answer and requires a person to decide based on a number of different factors to suit their needs.
    So I thought I'd put together this video, providing you with the differences between the two, so you can decide which is the best one for you.

    I was scared to relax my hair because I used to see people with relaxed hair experience breakage.. But then I relaxed my hair with no lye relaxer and my hair didn't have any breakage at all!!!!😏😏I was shocked considering that people had hair breakage and damaged hair. So guys try the no lye relaxer it's super duper "GRT"🤩🤩🤩🤩💕💕💕💕💕

    The ORS LYE relaxer has two strengths just like the NO-LYE one does that comes in a box. It comes in Normal strength for Fine-Medium hair and Extra strength for Coarse-resistant hair types

    I found this video very useful! I have to No-Lye relaxers. Because, everytime I've used a Lye relaxer I would always get burning, tingling, and irrations onto my scalp as well, and I think the No-Lye relaxer leaves my hair with a top notch great straighteness as the Lye relaxer does!!! And, I've also noticed that after washing out the relaxer moving onto applying the neutralizing shampoo that comes in the ORS relaxer kit. My hair has never felt dry after relaxing!!!!

    Both is hard on hair to be honest. Both are strong chemical. I personally have course type 4 hair but I use no lye it doesn’t break my hair off. It doesn’t burn my scalp. Just neutralize hair after deep condition often and moisturize every day and stay away from heat and braids for 3 to 4 weeks after relaxing. That’s what I do

    3 tips: 1) Seltzer water from the grocery store removes mineral deposits just as well as demineralizing or clarifying hair products.
    2) Also, Coca-Cola (not Pepsi) contains electrolytes that will stop the pain caused by relaxer but it will not stop the chemical burn so you still have to be very quick at getting to the sink and rinsing out the relaxer. 3) Caucasians might find it easier to use a regular curly hair perm but instead of using rods first mix the perm solution with flour to thicken it to the same consistency as a thioglycolate perm and comb it straight, keep the hair as straight as possible until the time is up, follow the instructions and closed for neutralizing and rinsing.

    Hey
    I just want to say your videos are amazing. I always thought I couldn't have thick long hair and realized I have been doing everything wrong. There has been for a while a lot of talk about products with mineral oil or petroleum. What's your views? As I am trying to figure out what moisturizer to use on my hair daily. What two products would you recommend?

    • @HealthyAfroHair
      @HealthyAfroHair  9 лет назад

      Thanks so much 😊 Yes, moisturisers containing mineral oil are known to coat the hair and not actually moisturise it, however, there are many people who love using it. So it's down to the individual. I don't use it. Have a look at my other 'Hair Product Update videos' as I show the moisturisers I use on my hair.

    It’s hard to say what’ll work better for your hair- maybe do a test on shed hair or strand test. My scalp isn’t sensitive but i have had shedding from lye (Silk elements) and breakage that I didn’t quite experience with no lye- and they can both create dryness.

    • @jashaehall154
      @jashaehall154 2 года назад

      I use silk element.. never using again!! I used the whole brown jar just to see if I was tripping BUT clearly I can see I’m not.

      It depends on a number of things really; i.e whether you have a sensitive scalp, the results you want to achieve (bone straight or with some texture) the thickness of your hair etc. This video sums it up really, so maybe watch it again to see what you think. I also have another video which may help you decide; Relaxed Hair vs Texlaxed Hair

    Pretty hairstyle!!! Thank you for making this video!!! I always ask ladies this question!!! Since starting my hhj and reading on hairboard forum about lye relaxers are better than no-lye, I switched over to lye (Mizani) and loved it for several years. However, recently Mizani has made any changes to its formula causing my scalp to burn. I plan to use a sensitive scalp lye relaxer by another company on my next relaxer touch up. If I still have burning then I will try a no lye and purchase a good chelating shampoo!!!

      +sweetfm2008 Hi FM, This is Carine from way back on Hairlista you know...the one who did all the buns and protective styles. I know it has been a while. How are you? I haven't been on Hairlista in YEARS since it's changed so much. I stumbled on your comment here. Guess what ...Ensley (dot) com brought back the original Mizani Butter Blends relaxer formula you used to used (And I'm NOT talking about that HG formula). As I recall you used the one for fine/ color treated hair. Girl, I just bought the tub and used it and I'm so happy that I can use Mizani again. I had to switch to ORS LYE because Mizani changed their formula but it left my hair dry and flaky, Mizani never did that so as of yesterday Jan. 9, 2016, I'm using Mizani again. So just go on the Ensley beauty supply website and type in "Mizani Butter Blend Rhelaxer Original Formula Fine/ Color Treated Relaxer."

I just got sick of all the silly questions when ALL of the answers were already answered on the site and it became newbie central. Don't get me wrong, I loved helping and answering questions but not the repetitive ones. All of the original 'listas are either natural or just not on the site anymore. Do you feel it's changed much?

    Quick question: I have a no lye relaxer from ORS, but the area I need to use it on is not that big. Which means I don't need that much relaxer, but I hate wasting stuff. I know you can't store and reuse the relaxer once you've mixed the components. But what if you portion the ingredients in half, like, only mix half of it and store the rest? Or is it not safe to use once the components have been opened, regardless of wether they're mixed or not?

    • @HealthyAfroHair
      @HealthyAfroHair  7 лет назад

      +Denise Onyeoma That could certainly be the case, so I think it's better to use what you need and dispose of the rest. I know it's a waste, but it's better to play it safe.

      +E Israel Andrade E Ok, well just so you know, a relaxer will make your hair permanently straight, so it will not revert back to your natural hair. To do that, you would need to cut the relaxed ends off and grow it out. Also, if you're not too sure of the process, then it might be best to get someone who can do it for you. Best of luck!

    • @bluebird1694
      @bluebird1694 4 года назад

      Yep. It's buffered with petroleum and mineral oil but the purpose is still the same- break down the proteins in hair to make it softer and easier to manage. If you leave hair in a jar of relaxer it'll dissolve completely, it just takes several hours instead of minutues like Drano.

    Wonderfully informative video. Single dad here taking care of my 12 year old daughter's hair. First time relaxing her hair. Where do I get the chelating shampoo? Is there a mild strength relaxer? All i see is regular and strong. Please advise.

    • @HealthyAfroHair
      @HealthyAfroHair  9 лет назад +11

      Thank you 😊 Awww...it's great to see a Dad, helping his daughter with her hair! You can purchase the chelating shampoo from most black hair shops. You might want to use the normal strength 'No Lye' relaxer on your daughters hair, since it's more gentle on the scalp. There's a number of relaxers which they claim to be mild for children; I.e kiddie kit relaxers, but they're still the same as any other one on the market. As it's the very first time relaxing her hair, you'll need to do it from root to tip. But just ensure you follow the instructions on the relaxer kit and follow up with the right aftercare. You can watch my video 'How I relax my hair' if you need any further tips, along with many other videos I have on looking after relaxed hair.

Now I want to do it by myself but I'm really scare, confused and overwhelmed lol . What do you recommend to me and what do you mean by it's harsh or gentle on hair? Thank you!!

    • @HealthyAfroHair
      @HealthyAfroHair  9 лет назад

      Hey, maybe try a 'No Lye' relaxer instead, but make sure you base your scalp with with either an oil or petroleum based product, to protect and prevent burning, as this will slow down the process. By harsh I mean, 'harmful or damaging' and by gentle, meaning it doesn't cause much harm. If you're going to self relax, just ensure you've done your research and throughly read the instructions on the relaxer kit. Best of luck :)

      Healthy Afro Hair Quick question: I have a no lye relaxer from ORS, but the area I need to use it on is not that big.

    I know this video is old but you're never supposed to use both types of relaxers they aren't compatible with eachother and will make previously relaxed hair break off. That's probably why the lye relaxer started burning etc. Once you pick one you have to stick to that type of relaxer

    i have extremely coarse hair however i just recently bought a no-lye relaxer FOR coarse hair and did a strand test, i felt nothing. no tingling. no burning sensation and i’m worried i won’t get the results i’m looking for.

    • @HealthyAfroHair
      @HealthyAfroHair  5 лет назад +2

      It’s actually a good thing that you didn’t experience the tingling or burning, because that’s actually not a good sign. But if you didn’t achieve the results you wanted, then maybe consider trying the ‘Lye’ Relaxer in the (Stronger Strength) and get a professional who is experienced to do it for you.

    I wonder if no lye relaxers still gives cancer or fibroids. Bc lye is very dangerous and is used in drain cleaner while no lye relaxer has ingredients similar to chemical hair removers which hasn't been proven as cancerous at this time. the studies linking cancer and fibroids/infertility to relaxers have been lye related. I wish there was more research.

      Calcium hydroxide & Guanidine carbonate are the active ingredients. It turns into guanidine hydroxide, which isn't stable and remains active for about 12 hours. If the scalp is based the absorption rate is lessened and since it's less likely to burn it's most likely the safer option.

      It’s best to weigh up the pros & cons and base it on your hair. I used a No lye, because I had a sensitive scalp and that worked better for me. The Lye was too strong for my scalp and caused irritation.

    • @HealthyAfroHair
      @HealthyAfroHair  8 лет назад +1

      +Dolle Angelic Ok, the best types of products to use (prior to straightening the hair) is either a 'heat protectant spray' or a 'hair serum'. Both will not only protect the hair from heat damage, but can also tame the hair, making it frizz free. So the best thing to do is Google search these products (as they're are soooo many) and select the ones you feel are the best! Good luck with your assignment! 😊

    I have taken exactly the same route as you as I had the same problem. I love the ORS no lye relaxer. However, I incorporate Designer Touch's After chemical Treatment in my Olive oil no lye relaxer regime. It works a treat to regain my hairs natural moisture gloss and movement which is great. Because my hair was too dry after relaxing before I met this. However, have you got any brand suggestions for chelating shampoos? Because I'm running low on the Designer Touch product and I currently live abroad where this product is inaccessible.

      No lye works on coarse hair as well they just have to use the super formula. Lye will not straighten as much as no lye does and 9/10 will burn.
