  • A new study suggests there may be a connection between hair dye/hair relaxer use and breast cancer. But what is this risk, and should you stop using hair dyes and relaxers?

Some black women age 40yrs. old and older have gone back to wearing and caring for their natural texture of hair 💇🏾‍♀️. I am one of them. No more perms/relaxers will be touching this scalp and hair of mine! Also, I love it that black women have alot of RUclips channels they can choose to subscribe to that shows black sisters showing us how to care and style our natural texture. Our black is beautiful 💗

Hi Dr. Jen Caudle. Since this segment came out, do you know of any non toxic/natural hair relaxers? Or any effective hair color treatments for gray hairs? Also, do you know if there is a link to the chemicals used in wigs and weaves? I worry that just wearing it can also expose me to chemicals. Really appreciate this video.

But my hair is dense and long, (past my ribcage), and frankly, tires me out! Plus, I would love to be able to show off it's length without so much effort. I never thought I would, but I miss my relaxed hair. Thanks for replying.

Could lifestyle play a role in this too? About 80% of us are overweight/obese, we live in inner cities where we are exposed to pollutions, we’re a healthcare vulnerable group due to lack of access coupled with medical racism. there seems to be no real answers and it always comes back to poor lifestyle decisions.

@@jamaicaunfilterd Yes. However I don't see this much push back on any other health issue on the black community. Tell a black woman to stop using relaxer and everyone is for it, even when they pose a minimal health risk. Tell a black woman to lose weight and people on social media try to get you fired from your job even when weight has direct, indisputable link to health. If we're going to be healthy lets be healthy where it counts.

It’s not about never relaxing your hair. you have to base your scalp properly. So the chemicals don’t absorb. Also switch to thio relaxers instead of the usual hydroxide
Try to stretch your relaxer to ever 3 months/12 weeks. Instead of the usual 8 weeks. Just like the woman that colored her hair every 6 weeks got ill.

@@DrJenCaudle you should try the Dyson air dry. I have it and I love it! Wet to dry with no damage. I have had it for 2 months so far and it’s the best hair tool I have ever had hands down. It’s a bit pricy at $500 but it’s worth every penny. Before I had my twins I had the most beautiful straight frizz free hair. From fertility drugs, after the kids, it started growing in dry, frizzy and unevenly wavy. I stopped relaxing, I only needed it once a year because the top of my hair is straight, ears down starts the wave. Once I heard about the connection to cancer two months ago I decided to buy the Dyson air dry.
