  • A C-17 Globemaster III of 99 Squadron based at RAF Brize Norton scared the life out of me. Things seemed normal until it started to do what C-17s do, manoeuvre with pure agility and looking like a wing wave but started crabbing. In fact this wasn't a landing in the end, but a "touch & go" but whatever the reasons, it was a moment in my life for the first time to make the choice to put the camera down and run!
The C-17 Globemaster III (Globemaster C-17) is a longrange, heavy-lift strategic transport aircraft that can operate close to a potential area of operations for combat, peacekeeping or humanitarian missions worldwide.
C-17 is capable of rapid, strategic delivery of troops and all types of cargo to main operating bases anywhere in the world. The Globemaster’s load-bearing rear ramp and digitally controlled loading systems, combined with the skills of its crews and ground handlers, enable large, complex items of equipment, including Chinook helicopters, military vehicles and other heavy items of specialist kit to be loaded.
It can transport 100,000lb (45,360kg) of freight more than 4,500nm (8,334km) while flying at altitudes above 35,000ft. The aircraft’s design enables high-angle, steep approaches at relatively slow speeds, allowing it to operate into small, austere airfields and onto runways as short as 3,500ft long and just 90ft wide.
    SPECS
BOEING C-17A GLOBEMASTER III (GLOBEMASTER C-17):
Powerplant four 40,400lb st (179.90kN) Pratt & Whitney F117-PW-100 turbofans
    Length overall: 174ft (53.04m)
    Height overall: 55ft 1in (16.79m)
    Wingspan: 169ft 9in (51.74m)
    Wing area: 3,800sqft (353.03m2)
    Maximum take-off weight: 585,000lb (265,350kg)
    Cruising speed at 28,000ft: 450kt (833km/h)
    Range with 100,000lb (45,360kg) payload: more than 4,500nm (8,334km)
    Service ceiling: 45,000ft
    Maximum payload (2.5g load factor): 169,000lb (76,655kg)

Never known Nikos be stunned into silence lol. it was so funny. I am certain it was a wing wave and deliberately pointed towards you for a few seconds, because if conditions were a little dodgy, they would have landed and not risk another cross wind.

We have C-17 Globemasters right up the street from us in West Virginia, they touch and go all the time and fly right over my house. We go to the cafe at the airport and watch them at least once a week. Fantastic machines. Got to see a C-130 Hercules parked right next to a C-17, it looked like a little Cessna in comparison. Would love to see a C5-Galaxy, C-17 Globemaster, and a C-130 Hercules all lined up together to see the size differences.

I used to live in a foothill valley at 4500' and I watched the C-17's ridge running down the valley at about 6000' the elevation of the ridge tops. They were low and not all that slow. I'm guessing it was a regular route for training low altitude approaches across mountain ranges because they did it often. Possibly based at the Travis Air Mobility Command Base near Fairfield, CA. Cal Fire also used that little valley to practice water drops on a large cul-de-sac parking area.

Good call Nikos to remain in situ and brave too, I would have done the same cos I'm mad as!. The shot of the championship contender right there. The moodyness of the sky with lights ablaze add to the shot, p.s through the tree shot is worth it alone. That C17 😆 can move! Personally I think it may have been a new pilot who had got the approach a little wrong, as it was over corrected then corrected again. There again he could of had some other people along for the ride and it could of just been a " I'll give them a ride to remember moment" lol 😅😂 Either way made for great viewing. A fabulously well filmed event, a touch and go that was off.. Pilot did well. Of course they did, it's the RAF silly...

    Simple.....the pilot sneezed!
Pretty sure that wasn't a wing wave! I think that would be very unlikely and potentially dangerous on a final to land at that altitude. The crew would be relatively busy at that point and certainly focussed on completeing a landing, not worrying about you. More likely an odd gust of turbulant air, or a late reposition to try and recapture the correct profile. (although that looked a bit too aggressive to have deliberately manoeuvred in that way at that speed and height). My money is on turbulence. It looked like a training flight anyway, with the touch and go. Nice spot though!!

Defo not a planned touch and go as spoilers were activated, most likely a training flight that landed too far down the runway to safely bring to a stop hence the T & G.

It was either a wing wave or the pilot suddenly realised they were lining up the taxi way and not the runway!

A C-17 coming back from a long trip lined up and landed at a general aviation field on Davis Island. The nose wheel was inches from the grass when he got it stopped. They had to remove everything they could and call in their ace pilot to fly it out.

Pretty impressive piloting skills from the C-17A Globemaster III as it is fighting with crosswind perhaps 🫡😮😎

Offset Landing if you do not have down alingment Radar and less sight. Much easier with the slow speed of a Hercules😊

nothing out of the ordinary there, you were nowhere near it and in zero danger from anything.
it was a touch and go training flight, if it wasn’t an unintentional adjustment it was a crosswind hitting it requiring adjustments yet still being a solid landing and takeoff

For Nikos, it was. Of all the approaches and landings he’s seen, this for him stood there as you could here, silenced him for a change lol 😂
