Hello Eli, I am living in far away Africa and learning about other places in the world is always a great joys in life. And you do it particularly well for teaching about Russia.
Many Africans come to the city of Kirov in Russia to get medical education. The cost of training is small. After training as doctors, they go to Africa and earn $5,000 a month in Africa.
@@АйратСултанов-ф7н In Canada our "Universal free medical system" is in a real MESS. Wish people would come help us after their training period. 👃✌️🥰🇨🇦
Much the same situation applies in Africa people do not seem to grasp just how diverse both the people and climate are across Africa amd of course the different Cultures and many would be amazed that in particular in many Western African Nations different religions such as Islam and Christians, The Asanti or Dogon to name just a few often respect and join in with one anothers festivities and generally live peacefully with one another. That is not to say there are no bad eggs they occur in every ethnicity and culture but generally the majority are good people helpful and caring but like Russia there are stereotypes that get put out there mainly from those who have never experienced reality in such diverse areas across the world. We have a wonderful planet and many amazing people and such widespread and differing beauty across this planet and sadly it can be ruined by Politics and greed and in many cases they are one and the same, Have a wonderful life and peace be upon you.
@someother - where in Africa.? I have lived in East Africa. Mainly Nairobi. About the best place i have ever been. A kabisa kabisa (completely completely).
Eli, probably one of your best videos. I'm Australian, with Anglo-Irish, Welsh, Jewish, Romani and Aboriginal ancestry. My daughters are mostly Russian/Siberian Tatar. My youngest granddaughter has a BFF who is Nigerian/Tatar. Almost no-one in Russia cares! Westerners don't understand the tolerance of Russians, to those who are Россияне. Men in town accept me as a Мояк, and have no problems with me wearing the appropriate телняшка. In over 25 years, I have found Russia to be an amazingly tolerant society.
I worked in tourisn for decades, and have dealt with many nationalities. Sadly the stereotypes exist for a reason. Russian's may be tolerant.....yet I think many of them may not realise how difficult they are too tolerate! I experienced more abuse from Russian's whilst doing my job than any other culture of people. Usually becuase they are so drunk.
@@rufanuf1 Australian have a terrible reputation abroad, especially in Bali. The ugly American is real. Whinging Poms is a valid reputation in Spain. There are always people who give their nationality a bad name, usually in drunken behaviour, or a failure to respect local customs and religion.
When I travelled around South-East Asia back in my college years, I met a sociology professor from Germany, we spent several hrs talking before he asked me where I was from and oh he was surprised to learn I was Russian:) the reason your experience was so bad is that Russin tourists are divided into two groups - those who drink and get very loud and those who are quietly enjoying their vacation you almost never even notice them. Of course the first group is causing issues so you form your label „Rissians“ based on them. And that is very unfair for the rest of us.
I wish America was more tolerant.Being of African ancestry,I live in a state that is very intolerant.Sundown towns where African and other people of color are in danger after dark.
Cheers for this Eli, keep on educating others, we appreciate the time and effort you put into this. Your extra freckles just add more beauty to you I think
This is the first video of yours that I've watched. Thank you for all the ethnic and language information! Another Russian Vlogger from the east says that when a stranger smiles at her, she wonders what they want from her. She also says it is called a "working smile" or "duty smile." I admire the Russian people greatly, and hope for peace soon. Harvey in Texas - Poka Poka!
Eli, I am a 70-year-old American woman married to a Russian man. I have visited his home town (Valiki Luki) in Russia twice. and St. Petersburg twice. What is fascinating about Russia to me is the vast difference between the metropolitan areas and the smaller towns and villages. There are also big differences between the regions too. I have been aware of that, but your video made it even clearer to me. I also really enjoyed your description of :coconut" and "peach" cultures and personalities. It is such a wonderful way of describing these basic differences without any judgment! The world is such a huge place and exploring different cultures can be very disorienting! I had huge culture shock the first time I visited Russia. It can be scary if you're not used to it. These are really hard times! right now Thank you for your warmth and your openness! You have kept your perspective despite all of this -- you must be a very strong person! You should know that it is deeply appreciated by this old broad!
I'm a 62 yr old woman in Interior Alaska, and I'd LOVE to meet a Russian man. Is there a way to? I'd gladly sell my house and 5 acres if I were to meet a decent, kind Russian man if need be.
Culture shock? Yes, the turmoil of the 1960's in "the Western World", and all the disrespect towards elders and the encouragement of racial division, was promoted there. They "missed out" on that societal "progress". My beautiful country has been turned upside down by land speculators, money laundering, and greedy politics. This WAS paradise.... 👃✌️🇨🇦
She is not a brilliant ambassador because she supports this fascist and militarist country. She demonstrates her ignorance, yes, like almost all RuZZians do. No metioning of the killings in Ukraine. For her its just ok.
I was surprised to learn that you have two different words for russians. That we have in Swedish in Finland too. In English they call all of us Finns. There ate Finnish speaking Finns and Swedish speaking Finns (about 5,5%). In Sweedish we use ”finnar” for the large Finnish speaking group, and ”finländare” for everybody (aöso including the small population om Sami in the north”. We call ourself ”finlandssvenskar” (Finlandswedes).
Below you will learn much about Russssieeee including another name for Russians! Speak about Russian weather, Russian culture, Russian food, Russian clothing, Russian .....bullsh*t. As long as Russia invades its neighbors, acts like the world's bully, is bombing Babushkas, little girls, families, homes, cities, hospitals, market places - this overshadows anything you can say about Russssieeee. Russsieee's little man in the Kremlin has killed almost a half a million Ukrainians. Russsieeeee's Stalin MURDERED 3-5 million Ukrainians exporting his famine strategy to commit genocide against peaceful Ukrainian citizens. Russsieee is the CREATOR of NATO 75 years ago and is the sole reason NATA exists! Russian citizens are ZOMBIES - walking dead. 'He-who-sh*ts-his-pants (Pootin) has castrated Russian men who are now 'damsels in distress' - cowering from conscription, cowering from Pootin, cowering in their Ukrainian trenches, cowering in countries bullied by Russsieee for a hundred years. Russsssieeee is overall a TERRIBLE place. Ukraine is the HOME of Rusland, is more civilized, prosperous, educated, democratic, and their 'nonexistent' navy has destroyed Russsieee's Baltic Sea navy, their 'nonexistet' army is storming into Russsieee liberating Russian zombies from their monster Pootin. Ukrainian history, culture, arts, food, everything is FAR superior to anything Russsieeee can produce. I could go on but I am going to bed now.
For Americans: To understand the ethnic situation in Russia, I think it might bear comparison to the USA if you imagined that Native Americans were a much larger part of our population, and that their languages and cultures had not been decimated. Imagine Arizona having a population that was 50% Navajo, and that you could hear Navajo being spoken every day on the streets of every town in Arizona. Then imagine every other state having some other one particular tribe as the most significant minority in that state, with the same linguistic and cultural situation.
Actually, funny thing about Russia that ethnic Russians completely dominate as 80% of population, but meanwhile 200 other smaller nations exists. Biggest are Tatars with 4% of population, third are Ukrainians with only 1.5 %.
I'm Canadian Metis. Both the USA and Canadian governments tried very hard to erase the indigenous groups. While stealing, pillaging and raping the land. Sounds like Russians incorporated all the different groups into one Federation. Giving each ethic region semi autonomous control over there area. This Russian approach is exactly what Russia proposed to Ukraine with the two LPR and DPR. Both regions would remain Ukrainian but be semi autonomous. But the USA government doesn't understand working together. The USA government only understands total control and wiping out of people groups. I actually find the USA government to be the most evil and corrupt government in the entire world second only to China.
@@MuffHam before Arizona was Az., the The Spanish Conquerors, pretty much massacred the Indians, as well as they did the Apache, in West Texas. Look it up, but I know it's easier to blame whitie

@@Natashanjka Yes, but my advice is restrict foreigners scooping up land. They will cripple your young generations of having homes...... I've seen it happen here... SO tragic..... 😭😭😭🇨🇦
@@Natashanjka land speculation. People from other parts of the world drive up the price of land. It is only as a means of securing their money, sometimes it's drug money, in countries with weak/stupid/naive governments. Tragic.... BUT great for greedy people... 🤣🤣🤣😱🇨🇦
@@galeparker1067 I think what you're trying to say is that Canadian banking laws are too lax and that questionable folks from different parts of the developing world have been buying real-estate in major Canadian cities. This makes it impossible for young Canadians to buy homes in their own country.
Are you serious? Eli travels, learns about other cultures, but shows no compassion for the victims of her terrorist RuZZia, not even a syllable of criticism. At the beginning of the video she even makes fun of our disgust for Putin's RuZZia.
Hi Eli, I'm going to show this clip to my english-learning students, here in italy. You speak slowly enough, and what you say is very interesting. I'm getting to love Russia. Grazie. Ciao.
As a first-time viewer, I enjoyed this episode thoroughly, every minute, every word. Looking forward to future episodes and I will certainly dwell through the archives and catchup. Thank you, Eli!
This was so interesting, thank you Eli. The part about how diverse the climate is across Russia reminded me of what I hear about Australia's climate/environment. I live in Tasmania which is very different from what I imagine most people think of when they think of Australia.
Hi Eli, I have followed you on RUclips for a long time and it is absolutely fantastic what you tell about your beautiful country, people and cultures Good luck God Bless
I loved the analogy about peaches and coconuts! I had never heard that :) I am from Australia but have spent time in Russia. I definitely noticed in St Petersburg people weren't so smiley on the street, however the people I met and stayed with were the kindest people ever! Australians are definitely more peach like ;). My russian friends said I stood out like a tourist because I was always smiling 😅😄
The same happens to me in Spain. I am Californian, therefore I smile at and pay compliments to strangers and therefore, in this land, I am weird! 😂 (I've learned to tone down the California a bit but sometimes I've just got to smile!)
I got to know a lot about Russia since i started watching your videos. Russia seems to be the as diverse as India . I am planning on visiting eastern Russia soon. Your video about Vladivostok and Kamchatka was really inviting. ❤ From India
You should hurry before it becomes China. It is used to be Chinese territory before Russian occupation at the end of 19 century. All Chinese living on that territory were killed by Russians.

Many people still have friends or close family in Ukraine and keep in touch, it's just that people don't hear about them quite as often as about those families that fell apart.
Watching RUclips videos in Russian , especially during the current situation is an ideal way to immerse yourself in the language. I visited Ufa a few years ago to visit my non ethnic Russian friends. I wish I stayed longer.
I think a lot of American stereotypes of Russia come from our government wanting Russia portrayed as a political monolith, and the "Cold War" era movies reflected that. Winter settings, dour people in bulky clothes, vodka, all used to make you feel bad for them, good about yourself. Tartar women are gorgeous, Eli , you are a great presenter. Please continue to explore the cultures.
I agree with your assessment; We were brainwashed to believe that Russians were divided into two camps. The people that were miserable under Communism & the cruel elite that lived in luxury through corruption. I think there was a lot of projection going on there though! lol It's terrible that our media is doing the same thing now with trying to portray all Russians as bad people while trying to portray everyone else as good people. I'd always prefer an ugly truth to a beautiful lie & in that same vein I'd prefer to hear all sides of the story rather than have it curated for me.
No we are not inspired by our government in the United States we know Russia through videos like this and other media forms also we could travel to Russia few years back and learn for ourselves but mostly thanks to videos like this we know Russia and we know Russia has very good loving beautiful people we don't look at Russia through what our government tells us because we know our government is a lie and I apologize as an American that we are involved in the Ukraine Russian war and we shouldn't be we are not for that war and we want peace in your country
True story. Hence, why Arnold Schwarzenegger has been seen as a rare exemption, and more or less as a cult hero in Russia, due to his appearance in *Red Heat* (1988), in which a Russian was depicted as a good guy for once. That aside, the demonization of Russia does stem from the US Government in part cause they are an easy scapegoat to justify the annual $700 Billion Defense Budget and else to further the cause of a small fringe minority in power.
0:48 you are absolutely right and the way you've presented this it is so funny 😂 "We are governed, our minds are molded, our tastes formed, our ideas suggested, largely by men we have never heard of.” ― Edward Bernays
“The conscious and intelligent manipulation of the organized habits and opinions of the masses is an important element in democratic society. Those who manipulate this unseen mechanism of society constitute an invisible government which is the true ruling power of our country. ...We are governed, our minds are molded, our tastes formed, our ideas suggested, largely by men we have never heard of. This is a logical result of the way in which our democratic society is organized. Vast numbers of human beings must cooperate in this manner if they are to live together as a smoothly functioning society. ...In almost every act of our daily lives, whether in the sphere of politics or business, in our social conduct or our ethical thinking, we are dominated by the relatively small number of persons...who understand the mental processes and social patterns of the masses. It is they who pull the wires which control the public mind.” ― Edward Bernays, Propaganda

Fabulous content Eli. Thanks to you and the internet for enlightening we of the anglosphere and Australia in particular. After a long lifetime of being told by the "man behind the curtain" that all things Russian were sinister, threatening, brutish, uncultured and unworthy, learning later the reality that the opposite is true, was an ever growing joy of admiration, appreciation and solidarity, mixed with some sadness at the energy and opportunity so long wasted.
Thank you for posting this Eli! I have always wanted to go visit Russia and see the countryside. I have been able to see several countries in my life and hopefully one day I will be able to see Russia. My friends dad and sister got to visit there for a few weeks back in the early 90's. I always loved listening to their stories and seeing the pictures. I think that might have been the spark for my sense of adventure and exploring new places. I have been blessed with meeting so many kind people and family in many countries over the years. Can't wait until the war is over and I can make an adventure over there. Thank you for sharing, please keep it up!!!

Greetings from Scotland! I think that if you travel extensively, you begin to realise that people tend to stereotype almost all countries. I completely understand what you are saying about Russia and Russians. Your huge country has an enormous diversity of different cultures and when people speak to me about "Russians" I try very hard to explain that to them just how big and how diverse it is there. Excellent video. I had no idea how diverse the different cultures blended and interacted with each other in Russia. It might be a little like Queens, NY where there are 186 different languages spoken here and these cultures are thriving. So, wondering if it’s like Queens (NYC) spread out over 11 time zones! Wow. Mind-blowing!
I do not know what Queens is, but I think the main difference is that all the peoples of Russia live in the territories where they have lived for hundreds of years. Sometimes they fought with each other, sometimes they were allies, but they always stayed where they lived. And another feature of Russia is that we have a fairly large percentage of mixed marriages between people of different nations, so very often we differ culturally, but not physically. And finally, the cultures of the peoples of Russia are not closed within national communities - food, clothing, architecture, songs, traditions are used without any prejudice and barriers, which contributes to the mutual cultural enrichment of our people.
I was in Russia in the 90's. I miss everything I experienced there. The food was great the people were civilized and intelligent. I seemed to fit right in although dogs would bark at me. When I returned to America, that is when I had the culture shock.

Eli, you are a wonderful ambassador of Russia. I have seen many of your vlogs and learned something new each time. What your vlogs add to my knowledge is a personal perspective, one that takes you into the Russian household, of which of course there are many different types. My impressions of your homeland were first informed by reading Russian literature - from Gogol to Dostoevsky to Pushkin and countless others, but also contemporary authors like Brodsky and Ulitskaya. And of course music and art. My favorite painters are Kandinsky and Malevich. Besides the arts, Russia has excelled at a wide range of things, from engineering to sports. However critical I am of the Russian government, I don't view Russia from a narrow lens. Russia is much more than what transpires within the walls of the Kremlin. Russia is a vast and beautiful country. Its diversity in climate and cultures is remarkable. I hope to visit at some point.
Thank you for keeping an open mind about our country and our people! Many USSR and Russian songwriters and poets expressed the sentiment of 'I love my motherland deeply, yet I hate its government's guts' multiple times through the ages, and this sentiment definitely speaks to most modern Russians more than anyone can imagine. When things improve, you'll always be welcome here!
@@aimee9478 Indeed, it's so important to keep an open mind. As an American, I am aware - and can understand - people's mixed feelings about my country. Yet, the best way for visitors to appreciate what America has to offer is to be open-minded. When I lived in Western Europe (Netherlands) in the 1980s, I traveled to Eastern Europe and cherished my experiences in what were then somewhat isolated countries. What intrigued me most was observing and trying to immerse myself - I stayed with host families - in local cultures. There were some language barriers. Though I speak English, French, and Dutch, and some German, I don't speak other languages. Nevertheless, the Slavic languages - which includes Russian - have always appealed to me, the sound and intonation, in particular.
@@joshuacohen9689 You've had some amazing experiences, Joshua! I speak English and German, currently learning French, and I'm very curious about Spanish. I've also seen many foreigners with various mother tongues getting proficient in Russian - it's a totally valid and achievable goal. Just don't pay much attention to people who will try to spook you with Russian being "oh so complicated" - it's true that it's not the easiest language, but it's definitely not the hardest one either, and it's absolutely possible with the right mindset. :)
Loved the video Eli & all the work you put into making all these videos which I deeply appreciate so much & your beautiful nature. I always learn something new from your perspective & I wish our "documentary networks" were as detailed, interesting & cool as your content is. Last time I saw such great documentary content (apart from B&B, Kurt Caz, Steveo1kinevo, Stefan Drury & Air crash investigation) was Dick Smith's round the world solo helicopter feat. It's personal, it's sometimes raw, it's inspiring, super educational, love how you give so much space for the others in your videos to freely express themselves & so glad you're sharing these videos & content with the rest of us, plus Russia is really beautiful & truly diverse. I've seen Bald & Bankrupt's videos, I know many friends from totally different cultures who had visited Russia, I've had & still have work colleagues & friends who have shared with me about Russia but you, Eli are an amazing content creator who always surprises us so please keep it up!. Many of us who also grew up as kids during the cold war understand the difference between great content like yours & propaganda which is sad as it mainly comes from our own media & politicians, just like it did when I was a kid that I rarely watch TV documentaries & travel blogs anymore. Thank you Eli, that was good education. I grew up in Iran , anytime I looked for a radio station , while turning the knob , I always passed through some Russian stations. I like the language and music. Also folk dances in all regions. Russia is a Civilization not just a country, Like Iran , China, and India. Good morning Eli. I send you, all my special thanks for your great video. This has allowed a number of people who subscribe to your channel or others who discovered this video, to perhaps, change their point of view. Or, their vision of Russia. I like very much this marvelous country which is Russia, with its immense distant lands. Bringing together different cultures by its diverse population Filled with wealth. 🙏👍👍👍🙂
So well said. I’ve never made it to Russia but have spent a lot of time in Eastern Europe and I love people from Slavic cultures. My family is of Slavic origin so maybe there’s a deep recognition. Ultimately, people are people. Along the way, there are so many cultural varieties to explore and enjoy. So many ways to connect across our differences and to recognize deeper similarities.
I am smiling and chuckling/laughing as I watch this video. I was born and raised in America, but had the privilege to travel from early age because of my grandparents; this is what prompted me to learn about other cultures, including Russia. I read and write Russian better than I speak it (maybe I should practice, Да? ). By the way, do not worry about the freckles. I had auburn/red hair in my youth/until the age of 17, at which time my hair began to darken. Wish that I had my auburn hair and freckles again! Am 53 now and wondering where the time went.
This is an awesome video, Eli. You explain things about Russia so well. I think the biggest surprise about Russia for me is the diversity of cultural groups and your ability to get along with one another. Another surprise for me was that not all Russians like vodka, like you Eli. If you do not like vodka, what's your favourite food and drink, Eli?
I really loved the description of people as being either like "coconuts" or "peaches", Eli! Definitely mostly peaches here in the UK, but it's mixed, I wouldn't say that everyone is As for me, I'm more like an egg. I look very severe most of the time but the shell cracks with the most minimal effort from my conversation partner...
Very interesting! I suppose one doesnt see the deeper picture always. I stayed in russia for a while and thoroughly adored it. People are very smart, polite, the culture is terrific and they were very patient with my learning the language. I actually find it very similiar to small town UK and really rather miss my time over there. Never have been that into America or asia though..the cultures very different and further west, rather strange and uncomfortable. Very rewarding experience and interesting video
Eli would be interesting if you took us to the far north-east of Siberia (the part closest to Alaska), Sakhalin and the Chinese border. I think these places are particularly mysterious for westerners.
these places are mysteriuos for russians too :D it's too expensive and long to travel there for an average russian, and these lands have very little infrastructure
What a lovely informative and entertaining way you have of presenting windows into your diverse country and its people. You manage to bring us face to face and earth to earth with a part of our planet that is less well travelled by westerners. Apart from this, it is of vital importance, that our western mind and media are exposed to the very warm and human reality of the world of Russian lands and people . We have so much in common, we can all gain so much from interacting constructively with one another, and yet we find ourselves being deviously divided by ruthless powers that could not care less about the values of rich cultures nor about the invaluable heritage of centuries of history. Please continue with your beautifull mission Eli , your smile is a therapy to a wounded world.

Someone recently asked what people think about bucha.... I'll show you my reaction if you're interested. I am writing this message to those who constantly mention bucha. I'm Hungarian, but I'll answer the question. buchaaaaa😂😅 Are you seriously asking this? The dead have no blood circulation, a dead person's clothes are not clean because they have been lying on the ground for a long time... I guess you don't like to think. Do you think u$raine always tells the truth? These u$rainians are constantly threatening Hungary (before the war and now) I am sure that not all NORMAL Ukrainians are so evil, but unfortunately the u$rainian government teaches Ukrainian people to hate Hungarians. I ask everyone to think and stop hating Russia and Hungary. It is clear that this war is not ideal for ordinary people, but unfortunately the arms manufacturing companies are happy if this bloody struggle drags on for as long as possible. I absolutely understand that this is very painful right now, but don't forget that politics has always been nasty and unscrupulous.

Thank you for explaining the different ethnicities. I've been very curious about Tartaria and if it really existed. On old maps it was called Great Tartaria before it was changed to USSR, then Russia.
Tataria and Tataria are completely different concepts. Tartaria is the ancient name of the Russian lands. And Tataria is the name of one region within Russia. You should not confuse these two concepts.
Thank you Eli. I never listen to the news and TV about Russia. I always knew that Russia has a rich history and culture background. You have explained it very clearly. Eli, what did you study at University?

I know that the Finnish anthem was originally written in Swedish and that up till the 40's it was USUALLY sang in Swedish and not in Finnish :P

That aside, the demonization of Russia does stem from the US Government in part cause they are an easy scapegoat to justify the annual $700 Billion Defense Budget and else to further the cause of a small fringe minority in power.
0:48 you are absolutely right and the way you've presented this it is so funny 😂

Great quote!
It is they who pull the wires which control the public mind.”

I think I fail, but at least I try! 😊 People have the same stereotypical view about Scotland. No, we don't all wear kilts, no we don't all have red hair and we don't all love Whisky (it is NOT spelled WhiskEy here!) and we don't all eat Haggis! etc. etc..... 😂😂
I have to say that you have beautiful red hair, just like a Celtic girl, incidentally. My youngest Granddaughter looks a lot like you and her name is Eilidh (Gaelic, and pronounced as Aily). Finally, I agree, Russians are like Coconuts! Once you get past the hard exterior they are just like the rest of the world! Thank you for your time once again Eli!

@@MIRRA9999 did you mean tataristan?
You don't understand that she implies that the place for tartars is in Tartaria not in free Crimea.
