- Do you know where I am from? In this video, I share my feeling and experiences being an Asian Russian in China.
I am living in China and many people think that I am Chinese but actually I am from Russia. Also, many people ask me in the comments about where I am from and so I thought I would make this video to explain more about Sakha, the different republics and regions and ethnicities of Russia, and some experiences I've had. In the future, if someone asks me about where I am from then i can just show them this video.
About Me:
I grew up in the coldest place on Earth - Yakutia. It's a republic in far northeastern Russia, in northeastern Siberia. The Sakha (Yakut), a people who formed from the mixture of local tribes with Turkic groups that migrated from the south in the 6th-10th centuries AD, joined the Russian state in the first half of the 17th century.

I guess you're out of touch about the war with Ukraine that is going on by the Russia. And I'm not surprise that you have no or very little info since you're in china where they also block the info. FYI, RUclips has demonetized all Russian accounts. IG, FB have also been blocked.

Lol it's hilarious that people don't believe you 🤣, but I can also imagine how tiring and time consuming it is to explain it each time 😅. Maybe it save can you some breath to carry around a map of Eurasia (with Yakutia labeled) in your pocket so you can just point to it and explain that your ancestors were there before Tsarist Russia crossed the Ural mountains in the late 1500's? If they still don't believe you, maybe just remind them that China also has 56 ethnicities, hopefully that would resonate with them.
Its sad that your are tagged as Russian and I can definitely see why your account has been demonetized. Hopefully, the outcome will sunder Russia sub regions into many sovereign countries.
I'm from Kazakhstan and I have a funny story from my friend. Here in Kazakhstan we have a lot of Koreans as a result of deportation in Soviet Union. Mostly they speak Russian and have Russian names with Korean surname. So, two Kazakhstani Koreans were in a holiday trip in the USA. They were speaking Russian between each other, and one local approached them to ask what language were they speaking. They answered it was Russian. He then asked: so, you are Russians? They answered they were from Kazakhstan. And he said: so, you are Kazakhs? They answered: no, we are Koreans. And it blew that guy's mind. Two Koreans from Kazakhstan were speaking Russian in the USA :)

I'm curious about Soviet Russia "deport[ing]" Koreans to Kazakhstan. Was this after WWII when there were ethnic Koreans in Soviet territory from all of the chaos?
Did it have to do with North Koreans (DPRK) who found themselves stuck in the USSR and they were in some sort of diplomatic dispute?
@@keldonmcfarland2969 Back in 19th century when Russia was still ruled by a tsar, there were a lot of Koreans living in the Russian Far East due to natural migration. Stalin transported them all over the country during the 1930s purge, including to the western parts. For example the mayor of Mykolaiv in Ukraine is actually a half Korean named Vitaly Kim, fighting in the war right now.

I am a college professor in Canada. I once had an Asian-looking student with a Russian first name and a Korean last name. Being a history buff, I immediately knew she must be the descendant of Koryo-saram (Soviet-Koreans). And I was right. The really interesting thing is, when she realized that there was a Lithuanian student in the very same class, she started conversing with him in Russian. Their classmates around them were really baffled by what's going on.

I like to troll people when they talk about Asians and ask them if they mean the blonde haired blue eyed ones.
They always get confused.
I can get that, as Moscow is still part of the European Continent so it can all get mushed :P
Well, speaking of Canada, particularly the more diverse places like GTA and GVA, you'd find a lot of people like that. I mean, for example, my kids have a Russian last name, look Eurasian, and speak English, French, Russian and Vietnamese :)

honestly im shocked that people in Moskow or in China dont know that Siberian people look like you. Im from Poland and i know that not only Slavic people live in Russia, but also a lot of different nation who lived here before. Thank you for channel, everything is so interesting ❤❤
At the moment, it is easier to meet a Chinese tourist in Moscow than a representative of small ethnic groups from the east of the country.And this is not because there is something wrong with small nations. There are just a lot of Chinese themselves.
we are simply divided for the most part, they live on their own lands, we on ours, while we are all part of one federation, this is a normal topic, they have their own culture, customs, we have ours and no one bothers anyone, we’re just still in the USSR they chose the path of friendship of peoples, not Western tolerance
Also Russian people who live in Moscow or another big city think that all Asians are Chinese and they always say nihao. And they think Yakut people live in yurt and still use deers as a transport. Ignorance is insane

As a Mexican who started learning Russian a couple of months ago I felt a little ignorant for not knowing there were Asians native to Russia. But now that I know that even some Russians ignore this, I feel a lot better about myself. Спасибо!
Not quite true. In Moscow, for example, a lot of immigrants from central Asia. And if I met her, I would think she is Kyrgyzian, but definetely not Korean or Japanese or someone else. Ex-USSR’s asians completely different from the rest asian nations.

@@Montagnard_DePeshxo After reading history, you should know that in Siberia, there lived ancient ethnic groups such as the Turks, the Xiongnu, the Mongols, and not just the Yugoslavs.

I always thought it was common knowledge that a lot of Eastern Russia had a large "Asian" population. I'm surprised that people are surprised by this. Love to hear your perspectives, but yeah that's honestly surprising that more people don't know this
Same with India. The people living in upper regions look like "typical" Asians
I think it's one thing to know this. It's another thing to put two and two together when this person is standing in front of you.
I think every country brands itself in a particular way, so that when a certain minority group doesn't quite match the expectation, people can get a bit confused about what to do next.
It's not good, but it's human nature to be a little bit lazy, especially if you have a long day and a lot of people to meet and greet, generalisation isn't great, but it is fast and gets things done. And if you're meeting them for a 30 seconds greeting before a 1 hour business meeting, most people don't feel like standing there for 6 minutes trying to figure out how your background fits into the world map.
I've got similar issues being a Chinese who grew up a bit in Germany and settled in New Zealand. When people ask me where do I come from, they want to hear: "China", because that's what they expect. They don't want to hear "Germany" because that doesn't make sense to them.
Basically, people tend to like to put others into boxes they can understand. And when the other person doesn't fit easily, things can get a bit more complex and awkward, but also more interesting? But to what extent another person wants to engage in that part of you is an open question and varies from individual to individual.

I find the large number of ethnic and linguistic groups in Russia truly fascinating. Also, I believe that the Saha are indigenous to Saha or Yakutia region.
I'm Sakha living in Italy and I faced a lot of funny reactions when I told Italians I'm from Russia similar to yours. But after few years it stops to be funny and just makes you feel sad about people's ignorance. The worst situation that happened to me was on the passport control at the airport when the officer told I couldn't be Russian and my passport was fake

Oh dear, I 'm really sorry to hear that sad story.. The officers at border contoll in some countries should improve their knowledge about ethnic groups, diversity in different nations on the earth. As a Mongolian some ppl really surprise me with ridiculious questions during travel.

I’m an American. I find Russia and your culture fascinating. I really admire how you all work together to survive and how everything is fresh and healthy. It’s neat to see how diverse Russia is. Thank you sharing about yourself and for these videos Yakutia (hopefully I spelled that correctly). You are a beautiful person with a diverse and unique background.
It actually echoes with American history. There is no American ethnicity (except Natives maybe) but US citizens have very different roots, which are blurred under the citizenship aspect - and also merge over time (lots of Black+Latino, Irish+Italian, etc.)

This is so cool that I stumbled across your video. I can empathize with your stories a lot, because I'm also from Russia. An Adyghe which are the indigineous people in North Western Caucasus around the Black Sea coast region. Having slightly dark skin with brown eyes (which is by the way not exactly a typical look of my people as well, but still) I have met with a lot of similar funny and confusing situations both in Russia and abroad. But especially with other Russians abroad 😅 Some people just get stumbled when they notice that I speak perfect Russian. And to overcomplicate things even more I spent a lot of time in South America and I also speak very good Spanish and Portuguese. And, you know, as I said I do look very much like some regular Latino guy and sometimes people approached me with "Hablas español" line which I can actually play along. When the conversation gets to "Where are you from?" parts it is where things get really complicated.
I am half Buryat, half Korean, but Russian is my first language and Tashkent is my hometown. I now live in USA and first few years were difficult, because nobody believed me. My favorite was the questions from Western Ukrainians, on how do i speak Russian. My answer was always: "Probably better than you!"

When I was a student in China, I used to play dota quite a lot in a game club near campus. There was a guy who always sat near me and we played dota together for a few times. He looks like Chinese and talks like native Chinese with a little northwestern accent so I thought he might be a student from northwestern part of China. As we were getting close, I noticed he likes visiting Russian websites. “Are you learning Russian?” “No, I’m from Russia”.

It's natural for "Chinese" to be in Russia. Their neighbors. when the border was drawn, there were some Russians left over in the Chinese side.
@@slewone4905 Yes. There are also many Chinese-looking Russians in US. I love Russian food such as Kompot, Kvass, and Lagman, so I do groceries at Netcost, a Russian chain store. I noticed some Chinese-looking people speaking Russian. Sometimes, the cashier even speaks Russian to me. Probably, they think I'm Russian too.
We need more content creators like you who keep educating us about cultures of places least exposed in the media.
Many of us are not aware that the eastern part of Russia is practically North Asia; a term we don't hear much compared to other parts of Asia.

I may surprise you even more. Even though the Sakha live in Siberia, we have many related peoples outside of Russia, for example the Turks.

One of my closest friends has an interesting background: speaks Russian as her home language, country of birth is Georgia, mother from Azerbaijan and Orthodox, step father Muslim and from Georgia, father from Russia, and her grandfather was Chinese. She just says she's Russian. 😊
Русский это не национальность, это как бы духовная община, мы в России для вас все русские, но в России живет примерно 120 национальностей, есть азиаты, есть славяне, есть тюрки, говорят на разных языках, разная религия, даже разный алфавит.

I'm a Japanese born in Brazil, and when I lived in China and people there asked where I'm from, everytime I said "Brazil" they were like "huh?"😂 Then I explained that I'm FROM Brazil but ethnicaly I'm Japanese. When I was in college in Japan I had 2 friends from Kazakhstan who looked Asian but speak Russian when we were with our Russian friend. And I love this diversity!♥️
i also love this diversity and beauty!!!! i find it disheartening that some people have bad experience from it... i guess we all experience problems fitting in who we are... who we supposed to be etc growing up or still experiencing it but like you i love the diversity and the wow and the beauty just the special something different...
Russian is a beautiful language, but is difficult to study, but only at the beginning of studying .

За границей бываю часто, постоянно думают, что я вру что из России, спрашивают где твои голубые глаза и почему не блондинка😂 Когда мне не лень и есть желание, то образовываю несведущих людей о том насколько наша страна большая, и что буквально бОльшая часть находится на континенте Азия. Ну и про Сибирь там расскажу пару слов. Иностранцы удивляются. А когда лень вести долгие разговоры, то проще ответить что-то типа я из Кореи или Монголии - встречных вопросов нет, все сразу верят.

It baffles me how many adults don't understand how borders work. Borders are man made. A language/tribe/culture etc doesn't begin/ end where the border begins/ends. Sometimes borders were drawn up the way there were, because of colonization other times, because of wars and various other reasons. Especially a country as big as Russia that spans over so many timezones and land, it's obvious that not everyone will look the same. Borders are man made, just keep that in mind. What bothers me more are the Russians who won't believe her. Don't they learn about their own country and it's people?!

It is question of practice. Those people in Moscow do know about existence of Saha people or others Russian Asian looking peoples, but still, they meet many Chinease or Vietnamese people in everyday life. So that is the first idea coming.
In my provincial city of Volgograd, for example, this issue doesn't stand, as there are many Russian Koreans and other nationalities living there.
Mmhm, sadly many people don't bother to learn about people beyond the bubble of their family or friends. Hopefully more people internalise this over time!

The feeling of being "a foreigner in your own country" really hits home for me. I'm a half Chinese half Iranian who lives in China and often I'll get asked if I'm a Chinese ethnic minority (mostly Uyghur or Mongol) when they hear me speaking native-sounding Chinese. If it weren't for the fact that mixed-races are common knowledge, I'd also have a hard time explaining myself.

If you remind people of how HUGE Russia is, and that part of it is in ASIA, it shouldn't be that hard to understand. Lovely culture, I hope to learn from it more soon!

I mean this is a common confusion. She is not Russian by etnicity. She is Russian by nationality, and not really that either because she herself say she is yakutian: So basically she's not Russian. She just speaks Russian. 🙂
@@GratDuForloradeArgumentet she's not just Yakutian anymore since "modern ways" have been introduced and she has been taught Russian language and culture, also education... that is de facto one of the things that make you a citizen of a country or an empire whether you like or not. So yes, she is a Russian ciziten, and many things she feels or thinks are cause she is Russian in that sense, otherwise they would have been left alone with their Yakutian traditions alone and it wouldn't have been compulsory for her to learn Russian. Unless I am wrong and she just learnt Russian cause she wanted but I don't really think that's the case...

@@GratDuForloradeArgumentet if she was just Yakutian she would not speak Russian. She herself says her thinking is so different to "Asian" Chinese people, that she feels the educational difference. Unless I misunderstood what she said about having certain beliefs and thoughts that make her Russian.

I have a similar experience with you but actually in a completely opposite way :) I am from mainland China and I have traveled to the Ulan-Ude republic in the Russian federation. Everyone on the street would assume that I am local Buryat and spoke Russian to me lol. It was during new years eve so they had a festival thing going on at the city's main square. I was stopped by a news reporter who had a whole filming crew behind him. He thought that I am local and asked me questions in Russian which I did not understand at all.
It was really a lovely trip to Russia and I ended up learning my first Russian phrase:

I'm half buryat, half russian. When I studied in Irkutsk in 2005 many chinese people still worked there on street markets( right before it was banned), so they always stopped me and trying to talk with me in chinese :D And as I didn't get a thing they just let me go. Later when I was studied in Japan japanese teachers thought that we (with my mate-girl which is mixed too, she is half bashkir, half buryat) are joking at them that we are from Siberia, Russia. And that is annoying sometimes when people saying like - aaaaa, mongols. And we are like - oh, no....
@@brunetka_361 Buryat people are mongols by descendants. Though many people do not realise that Russia is a muilti society just as the U. S and therefore might be shocked to see Asian Russians lol
@@qimengzhang2836 It's like saying that ukrainians and russians are the same. So mongols and buryats are different nations. This is not right to say that they are same. Buryats always lived around Baikal. You can watch it on the map of Mongol Empire in 1207 year.

Same thing in India. People usually think Indians are what you will only see on TV and bollywood but there's so many tribes in India. I'm from North East India and from the state of Meghalaya. I belong to the Khasi tribe. Most people around the world don't know that. We are really different in culture and traditions from the mainland India. The language we speak is so different. And we are majority Christian. Great video.. ❤️❤️

You're not Christian because it's not your religion it's ours. You have your own. Many people claim to be Christian bc it's a white religion. It's literally within European culture where christiany took place like the 1700s. Just recently you guys call yourselves christian.

Fun story: I’m Kazakh. Once I went to Vietnam, some Russian girls were talking behind me and probably assumed that I was Vietnamese because I wore that traditional hat. Then, when I started speaking Russian they were so shocked lol

Unfortunately people do not have enough knowledge about geography or history to know how diverse certain countries are, ethnically speaking, like Brazil, Russia, United States, among others. Especially airport immigration officials should learn more about this.

Being Asian Russian (Bashkir) who has lived in China myself I related to this on so many different levels! And omg how many times I got that "I bet you're Chinese/mixed/wasian", "is your dad white Russian and your mom is Chinese?"( why it always was my mom who had to be the Asian one, why not vice versa?), "so your parents have immigrated to Russia from an Asian country?", "you don't look Russian to me at all🧐" and so on. And even after I explained the whole thing about my ethnic background people tend to reply with "you probably had Chinese ancestors" ...

They assumed your mother is Chinese, not your father because for Chinese, children always took their father's surname, so just by your Russian family name they deduced that your mother, not your father is Chinese.

I am from Tatarstan and moved to Belarus last year. I am not Tatar, with pretty much European appearance. When some people find out where I came from, they get surprised and say they thought I was from Russia. But what's more fun is that I have to explain at post offices that Tatarstan is in Russia almost every single time I send something to my family.

Thats 'really funny. We Slovaks, a small heart of Europe, we truly understand what you mean, coz we had many wars and armies ongoing through our territory, so we got really good mix in our genes. I live in the Volga region (Russia), we have many nationalities here. Russians, Tatars, Chuvashs, Mordovians and many others. Therefore, we are used to the fact that if a person does not look like you, this does not mean that he is a foreigner. 😃 In general, the diversity of nationalities and mentalities in one country (not to mention religions) makes us more flexible. And such behavior, like the people you talked about, only shows their limitations and bad manners. I’m glad that Russia is so different. There would be more authors like you who talk about her little-known facts.

For those who don't know - North East Indians look fully East Asian but are full Indian citizens.
They're also the few majority Christian Baptist states within the Indian Union
Some Indian are mistaken for European, and some Russians are mistaken for Indian. The Dagestani minority in Russia are mistaken for Indian. In fact some ethnic groups in Russia can also be found in India, such as Tajiks, Pashtuns, and Turkic people.
I got 6% Russian and Dagestani dna while my friend Igor had 8% Indian dna .

My mother was born in Harbin of Russian parents. I understand your problems and your story. Though I was born in the US I identify with my mothers heritage and story more than my own. A multi-cultural identity brought by marriage I consider the greatest gift and legacy a son can carry.
Honestly, I’m not surprised by her story as indigenous history is not being taught or absorbed properly in schools. All it takes is one anthropology course to understand the entire flow of human evolution, culture, and migration.

I'm Asian Indian from Northeast India, we are also called Chinese in Mainland India.
Yea, because in most english speaking countries, the word asian is refered to the phenotype of people who has east asian ancestry, which is the case for the east russians and the north east indians, but also for the native tribes in americas such as the inuits, that's why they look asian, it's because they were east asian who migrated to North America.
But what people should do is they shouldn't mix ethnicity, nationality and culture/religion together. Those are part of our identity but they are still different things. Just like the north east indians who complain about many instances of racism by the majority indian due to be phenotypically asian, but you can still be phenotypically asian while being nationally canadian or indian and culturally something else, just like the women in the video who's phenotypically asian but in terms of culture, she's russian. And it's the fault of the people for assuming that she's necessarily culturally east asian.
Some indian also argue that they are asian because of the north east indians(while not being phenotypically north east or asian at all), but the north east indians are a minority within India, and the minority doesn't represent the majority demographic. It's as absurd as saying that the US is an asian country because they have 7% asian population.
In most part of the world and in almost every conversations, people use the word asian phenotypically, in most english speaking countries it's the east and south east asian phenotype, while in the UK, british people refer asian as desi people (south asian ancestry), just further proves asian isn't necessarily a geographical term.
Phenotype is much more objective than geography since each countries have their own borders of continents and geography. Phenotype reflects of our dominant/majority genetic ancestry, it takes into account nuances such as the east russians, the north east indians and the native tribes who look phenotypically like east/south east asians. And it takes into account for nuances such as why a white person with only like 2% black african DNA wouldn't usually be socially accepted to have the N word pass, because most of who they are isn't black and their phenotype represents that.
Just for calrification, if the word asian was solely used geographically, the typical white russians would be asian objectively since most of russia 77% is in asia, jews would be asian, arabs would be asian, south asians would be asian, then east and south east would be asian too. At this point, it loses it's meaning due to being such a broad general term that encompass so many demographics, it can simply be replaced with the word "human". And remember, geography isn't objective at all since each countries have different map/borders. And if there's an issue with the word asian not necessarily being used geographically, then there should also be an issue with the word american not being necessarily used geographically, yet everyone is fine with that and knows where canada and mexico is despite calling only US citizens as american.
This is actually what I immediately thought about! I'm from South India and lots of NE Indians are coming to the cities here in the last 10-20 years for university and jobs, and so many ignorant locals used to call them Chinese and be racist. I hear more people are educated on this now, but we can do better and our schools should really be teaching more about the Northeast! (The history textbooks barely even teach about the South too). And when I studied abroad, the Northeast Indian students there were in a particularly odd place because foreigners are even more ignorant about what Indian culture means.

Though I am Caucasian, not Asian, but as I am also not blond with blue eyes nobody believes me when I say I'm from Russia. In Italy, Spain and other southern European countries they always assume that I'm local. Sometimes they think that I'm pretending that I don't speak their language. :)
Once a Sicilian told me that I look like a local who spent several weeks at a hospital (meaning that I have no tan). 😁

I believe it. I was in Moscow and there is a melting pot not know in the west where russians aren't at all all blonde and slavic. It is a "former" empire that cross europe and asia, and you can see lot of russians with dark hair. Russia is know as a slavic country, with slavic people, but the slavic fenotype generated up in the north arund novgorod like the germanic one was in scandia and coastal germany. But there were a lot of ugro finnic tribes so the original slavic people must had some finnic features. For example, Putin to me is more like a mix of finninh and slavic. he is not tall, while slavic men are tall generally, he ha a large forehead like finnish people. And of course is blonde. his face is slavic: triangular with thinlips. Slavic people conquered south and east so they met tatars, some people of ancient iranic descent in the volga region, caucasian people, then all the asian minorities in the east. And there are a lot of mixed people so it is possibile to see a long, thin girl with prominent cheekbones, blue mongoliand eyes and blondish eyes. usually eroasin had asian face and european body. It is not known this melting pot because few russians lives elsewhere and russia is not a popular destination.
Some people is very ignorant and prejudiced but I have no idea why they would think all Russians are blonds with blue eyes when not even Scandinavians are (maybe the Dutch?)
On the other hand it baffles me even more that not even Mediterraneans seem aware of the Mediterranean diversity: it's not all about skin and hair color, in fact pigmentation is a very secondary trait in West Eurasia, and Mediterraneans are more diverse and structured than Northern Europeans: it's apparent in the genetics but it's also apparent in the looks: there may be some overalp but each Mediterranean peninsula is quite different and I'm pretty sure I would have a very high score, well above 80% or maybe even 90% accuracy, if asked to blindly classify Iberians, Italians and Balcanics even from just mere photos, they are not at all like each other.

This video is so relatable to some of my friends. I'm from India and we too have a region where people look "Asian". They are from the North East of India. These people have their own culture and history but many people even within India will call them Chinese or maybe Southeast Asian. It is sad how basic geographical and ethnic information about one's country is not given properly at basic school level.

Я из Владивостока, легко определяю, идет китайская туристическая группа, японская или корейская. На интуитивном уровне, плюс языки разные и я на слух знаю, как звучит японский, а как китайский. И, естественно, я их никогда не перепутаю по внешности с филиппинцами, к примеру. Для москвича же все будут, плюс-минус, на одно лицо. Также моя мама из Читы и я вычислю бурята и смогу его отличить от казаха, т.к все детство я проводила в читинской области и даже знаю несколько бурятских слов, им меня научил мой русский дед. Он обожал говорить по-бурятски 😊 И у него был друг, бурят Миша. Даже по говору где-нибудь в поезде могу догадаться, что человек из Улан-Уде или Читы. А вот ближе к Москве людям уже сложнее уловить нюансы, поэтому там любого азиата могут принять за иностранца.

I was studying Mandarin in China and I had many colleagues from Russia which were looking Asian, like Buryats, Tatars, Koreans (from Russia). For me that's not surprising at all... Even some relatives of my wife look Asian because they are Bashkir and Buryats. Whenever you have different backgrounds, that's a treasure. I think it's totally fine if you say "I am Sakha" even to foreigners. If they don't know, you can tell them, promote Sakha culture abroad. Nobody should dictate your identity. Ofc you are a Russian citizen, but regional minorities shouldn't forget their culture. I'm always saying to friends that my wife is "Volga Tatar from Russia". When I was living in China I was always saying I am "a Croatia born Italian because there is an Italian minority in western Croatia 我是一位来自克罗地亚的意大利人 我们在克罗地亚有许多少数民族 ".

This is an interesting topic which I kind of relate. I'm an Asian who lived in Russia for quite some time when I was in High School. I speak Russian quite well to the point that some Russians think that I lack "Accent" and speak like a real Russian. A lot of time people mistook me for being a Kalmyk or from some central Asian countries while I come from Southeast Asia which is far away. I completely relate with being spoken in the back while understanding the whole thing that are being said. However, one thing that kind of bugged me was being checked a lot more by "менты" and metro security just for being an Asian. Other than that, I think Russia is a wonderful place and have met a lot of wonderful people there.
Totally understood. It is like when people talk about Chinese, they always think of Han people. But we have 56 ethnic groups including Russian and Korean.
I try to explain that to people in the states and they have trouble grasping this idea. The problem has a lot to do with the institutions. If you ever go to a museum that showcases ethnic cultures or ancient cultures, they present it like everything is in the past in Europe and East Asia. They rarely talk about the "indigenous" cultures of Europe or Asia in the same way let alone celebrate them. Indigenous to the museums mean Native Americans emphasizing they're relics of the past that somehow still exist rather than just calling them an ethnic group in the country who still carry on traditions and cultures.

I'm from the US Southeast, 43 years old now, and have always been interested in learning more about the diversity in that region of the world. Mainly due to the fact of just what you pointed out. So it's good to find real people sharing their own cultures and experiences online, especially for those who are unable to travel & experience in person. I my self, was born in a village in Norway, in the forrest, and we also grew and harvested a lot. One time while I was working at a Japanese restaurant (I'm Rusyn/Russian, but I grew up with Japanese, but I'm from CNY, but this was in WA), a group of like 5 Chinese kids came in and one kid I immediately noticed was not Chinese, they looked like they were from our part of the world (I was probably the only one in the restaurant to notice tho). (also, I can speak some chinese on that note, but not great. I need to improve both my Mandarin and Russian honestly! )
Anyways, when I went to the table and was crouched down to get orders we ended up immediately speaking in Russian and all the Chinese kids were dumb-founded by our entire conversation xD It was so great xD

@@YSFmemories I think CNY is Central New York State. A Russian living in CNY with Japanese, working in a Japanese restaurant in WA and speaks Russian with a Chinese dinner. Hahaha, love it from an Australian who is born in VN of CHN parents.😀
what the rest of the world doesn't know about Russia is staggering. Honestly, you have a beautiful and fascinating country. It is so proud of it's people and so culturally diverse.
As a born Canadian, I have been taught almost nothing about Russia, and I'm so thrilled I found your channel for me to learn more and share with my children.

Hello. There are a lot of ethnic groups living on the territory of Russia. Read about the Yakuts, Buryats, Tatars, Chuvash, Mordvins, Komi Permians and so on. There are a lot of us) I'm a half-breed myself and I'm proud of it. And it is very strange that this fact is hidden from such a "diverse" Western world, because our cultures learned to coexist together a long time ago. Not without wars, of course, in the past, but who hasn't had them? Now Russia is full of Orthodox churches, Islamic mosques, Buddhist temples, nomadic peoples, and someone still considers himself an atheist. I think that's why foreigners are not told about Russia in detail. Why talk about a place where a person can be himself, live on his own land and live a free life.

Hey Kiun! I had a similar situation when I travel to China long ago. I'm mexican and nothing to do with China; just mexican relatives. Nevertheless they believed I was chinese. Even worse I can't say a word in chinese, and it was hard for me to understand english with chinese accent. After a month (I was there because a project with a mexican company I was with at that time), I was trying to go back to Mexico; the funny thing was that the people in immigration tought that my passport was fake. After I tried to explain my self (they hardly spoke english) they realised that I didn't understand chinese at all and decide to let me go. Hard situation, because my visa was for a month! I still don't know what should happened if I had not been able to leave China that same day🤔 Thanks for the video it's great:

That's not a surprise. I am Asian American. I used to work in a restaurant and a Mexican or Guatemalan girl came in. She looks very indigenous. She started speaking Spanish to me instantly assuming I may be Latino. I had many Latinos that just came to the US speaking Spanish to me. Lol when I was in Alaska, the Alaskan natives thought I was Native Alaskan too lol
The more I hear about it, the more I learn that Russia is an absolutely fascinating culturally diverse country, probably more so than any other country in the world. And except for culture and traditions, Russian are so much like other peoples from around the world, unlike the stereotype some in the west like to portray them as
I'm from Kyrgyzstan (ex-soviet country), have been living abroad for 6 years (Middle East and now Europe) and oftentimes hear "you are the first person I meet from your country" LOL. It's a big responsibility and I carry it with pride, people get curious and some wanna go visit my country as long as they are openminded. I also learnt a lot about different Asian nationalities since I moved outside of my country, it's really fascinating how we are similar and different at the same time in various aspects. My favourite are Japanese and Vietnamese people.

My mom is from Kalmykia, a republic in the Western side of russia in europe, but we descend from mongolia and look asian. I am American but treasure my mom's native culture and am currently learning russian, about my kalmykian heritage, and about buddhism, which they practice. Thank you so much for sharing your story!! Whenever I tell people I am russian, they are confused too.
@MyHeritage Mongolia Persian and Tajik are not the same. Persian is related to Iran while Tajik is related to Tajikistan and surrounding areas. Another group called Tajiks in Xinjiang is related to Iran as well.

It's been only 70 years since india got independence and the connectivity with northeast started only in last 20 years . Before that many people in North and South didn't even knew that we had people with mongoloid features too 😂

My wife is from India and is from a NE Tribe called Mizo, and the people look Mongolian or SE Asian. They have a similar experience in India when living or traveling to other parts of India like Mumbai or Delhi as most people think they are from another country. I think this is what makes the world beautiful, is having so many different cultures and traditions to learn from. Without so much diversity in the world, we wouldn't have so many different types of art and music etc.
I feel so seen. I’m Central Asian. I look pretty East Asian /Chinese, but I was born and raised in Moscow, so I identify as Russian. And then on top of that, I moved to US and hang around a lot of Chinese people. It blows people’s minds when I try to explain who I am and where I’m from and why I look the way I do. Russians, Americans, Asians…. they always get super confused.

I'm reminded of the time in an American coffee shop I had to explain to some Chinese students (I was born in America) a girl from Kazakhstan was not Chinese, and of course, Chinese and Americans both had never heard of it.

When I was in HK and Korea people didn’t believe I was Brazilian so it was easy to say I was Japanese. I also have a mix of Brazilian and Japanese mentality and also find myself kinda unique…. Japan is not a colony of Brazil. The problem with this girl's videos is that she's annoyed that she's not being read as Russian. She demonstrates not in the first video colonial mind. This is internal racism. Do Brazilians identify themselves with Portugal or the white population of Portugal? Is it massive? The Republic of Sakha, like almost the entire Caucasus, the Urals, North Asia and East Asia, is a colony of Moscow. The non-white people of Russia live in poverty, they receive a meager sum from the wealth that is in the bowels of their lands (oil, gas, diamonds of Yakutia, etc.). And the girl does not perceive Russia and the Russian people as colonizers, exploiters. What kind of consciousness does one need to have in order to be proud of not knowing the language of one's ancestors or to be proud of being married to a white man? Answer: colonial consciousness, internal racism. And this is all very sad.

Yo soy saja, soy de Yakutia pero vivo en España y hablo castellano.. en 2014 fui de viaje a Brasil a visitar mis amigos que vivían en Londrina.. y allí en Londrina la gente local pensaba que yo era también de Brasil😊, pensaban que era japonesa brasileña .. pero cuando empezaba a hablar, se sorprendían mucho porque no hablaba portugués.. les hablaba en inglés o español con la esperanza de que me entendiesen. Entonces me preguntaban si era extrajera, yo decía que sí… China? Japón? Corea?.. No, soy asiática de Rusia pero que vivo en España y hablo castellano (también hablo italiano porque mi marido es Italiano), la gente se quedaba en confusión 😄

Hoy tenemos la mayor población de japoneses y descendientes japoneses fuera de Japón. Londrina es una de las ciudades que acceptaran miles de inmigrantes japoneses para trabajar en la agricultura. Más recentemente, en los anos 80, hubo una inmigración de chinos y coreanos. Por lo tanto todavia hay muchos brasilenos con rasgos orientales y normalmente se asombran quando se encontran con asiaticos que no hablan portugués o que no son japoneses, chinos o coreanos.

Secondly, if the Yakuts themselves do not consider themselves a colony, why did you decide that you know better and can decide for these people whether they are a colony or not? When I was working in Switzerland, my colleague's teenage son was so eager to meet me after hearing that I was from Africa. When we met, he was shocked to the point of being speechless, because he never expected me to be white-skinned.
Also remember being in Ocean Park HK a few years ago during a school trip's R&R day where a mainland tourist nearby suddenly took a photo of my Indian schoolmate as they said it was their 1st time seeing dark-skinned people & thus intrigued to see her

Пошли в местный торговый центр. Там встретили несколько парнишек азиатской внешности. Мне было понятно, что это НАШИ азиаты, скорее всего с севера Тюменской области. Они очень отличались от всех окружающих, однако это было приятным и запоминающимся моментом, потому что напомнило, что страна у нас многообразная. А люди очень красивые.

В какой то мере многонациональность наша сила во многом, как допустим, тувинцы на радиопередачах передавали на своём языке разведданные без шифров, так как их и так никто не поймёт. Однако плохо, что большинство всё же не знает о нацменьшинствах, помню бабушка рассказывала, как она поехала учиться в Барнаул, а это было во время Советско-китайского кризиса, и местные дети дразнили её китаянкой, ведь им сказали китай плохой, но блин, ты живёшь в АЛТАЙском крае, тебя не волнует что здесь жили наши предки? что мы существуем и мы отдельный народ? конечно моя бабушка возмутилась этими дразнями и проявила акт насильственного воспитания (такой уж мы гордый народ). Хорошо сейчас никого пинать не надо, чтобы доказать о своём присутствии, за что спасибо правительству РФ.
@@Mr-belochka у нас в школе постоянно появлялись ребята и девочки то с Кавказа, то из Башкирии. Даже наши учителя были разных национальностей. Поэтому, видимо, имею прививку против различных стереотипов. Но могу представить, что есть регионы, где реально довольно мононациональный состав. Поэтому появляется реакция не всегда здоровая.
